Abstract:Even though ZnO is commonly used as the ETL in the perovskite solar cell (PSC), the reactivity of perovskite deposited thereupon limits its performance. Herein, an ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid‐complexed ZnO (E‐ZnO) is successfully developed as a significantly improved electron selective layer (ESLs) in perovskite device. It is found that E‐ZnO exhibits higher electron mobility and better matched energy level with perovskite compared to ZnO. In addition, in order to eliminate the proton transfer reaction at the ZnO/perovskite interface, a high quality perovskite film fabrication process that requires neither annealing nor antisolvent is developed. By taking advantages of both E‐ZnO and the new process, the highest efficiency of 20.39% is obtained for PSCs based on E‐ZnO. Moreover, the efficiency of unencapsulated PSCs with E‐ZnO retains 95% of its initial value exposed in an ambient atmosphere after 3604 h. This work provides a feasible path toward high performance of PSCs, and it is believed that the present work will facilitate transition of perovskite photovoltaics in flexible and tandem devices since the annealing‐ and antisolvent‐free technology.

Abstract:The interfacial photocatalysis of metal oxide electron transport layers (ETLs), especially TiO 2 , in organometal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has detrimental effects on device stability. Herein, a UV absorber, 4,4′-oxybisbenzoic acid (OBBA), was first utilized as a modification layer between TiO 2 and perovskite against UV photocatalytic degradation. Owing to the strong UV filtration capability and coordination effect of OBBA molecules, the harmful UV light was filtered and the oxygen vacancies on the TiO 2 surface were eliminated, which significantly suppressed the interfacial photocatalysis reaction, and the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of perovskite under UV irradiation was proposed for the first time. Moreover, the uncoordinated Pb 2+ defects at the buried interface were passivated and the energy band alignment was optimized. Consequently, the modified device presented a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 22.14% and excellent stability under extreme UV irradiation (365 nm, 600 mW cm −2 ; 275 nm, 10 mW cm −2 ).

Abstract:Planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) made entirely via solution processing at low temperatures (<150°C) offer promise for simple manufacturing, compatibility with flexible substrates, and perovskite-based tandem devices. However, these PSCs require an electron-selective layer that performs well with similar processing. We report a contact-passivation strategy using chlorine-capped TiO2 colloidal nanocrystal film that mitigates interfacial recombination and improves interface binding in low-temperature planar solar cells. We fabricated solar cells with certified efficiencies of 20.1 and 19.5% for active areas of 0.049 and 1.1 square centimeters, respectively, achieved via low-temperature solution processing. Solar cells with efficiency greater than 20% retained 90% (97% after dark recovery) of their initial performance after 500 hours of continuous room-temperature operation at their maximum power point under 1-sun illumination (where 1 sun is defined as the standard illumination at AM1.5, or 1 kilowatt/square meter).
Impeded Degradation of Perovskite Solar Cells Via the Dual Interfacial Modification of Siloxane

Abstract:It is challenging to improve the long-term stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) without sacrificing efficiency. The perovskite absorbers degrade from the film surface/interfaces, which follows entangled mechanisms that have not been fully revealed yet. Herein, we decouple and elaborate two distinctive pathways regarding film degradation based on FACsPbI(3) perovskites. Moreover, a dual interfacial modification strategy has been developed for improving the material's intrinsic stability, thus leading to the film degrading in a more retardant pathway. The corresponding PSCs achieve a stable power output efficiency of 23.75%. More importantly, the unencapsulated PSCs devices retain over 93% of their initial PCE after the maximum power point (MPP) tracking under the continuous 1-sun illumination and show significantly improved stability after aged under the thermal treatment or stored in ambient atmosphere for over 1500 hours without obvious PCE decay. This work shows the importance of modulating the degradation pathway on stability improvement, and at the same time, proposes a strategy for designing perovskite-based optoelectronics with excellent performance and stability.
Enhanced Lifetime and Photostability with Low-Temperature Mesoporous ZnTiO3 /Compact SnO2 Electrodes in Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 25 % mainly have SnO2 or TiO2 as electron-transporting layers (ETLs). Now, zinc titanate (ZnTiO3 , ZTO) is proposed as mesoporous ETLs owing to its weak photo-effect, excellent carrier extraction, and transfer properties. Uniform mesoporous films were obtained by spinning coating the ZTO ink and annealed below 150 °C. Photovoltaic devices based on Cs0.05 FA0.81 MA0.14 PbI2.55 Br0.45 perovskite sandwiched between SnO2 -mesorporous ZTO electrode and Spiro-OMeTAD layer achieved the PCE of 20.5 %. The PSCs retained more than 95 % of their original efficiency after 100 days lifetime test without being encapsulated. Additionally, the PSCs retained over 95 % of the initial performance when subjected at the maximum power point voltage for 120 h under AM 1.5 G illumination (100 mW cm-2 ), demonstrating superior working stability. The application of ZTO provides a better choice for ETLs of PSCs.

Abstract:Although planar‐structured perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have power conversion efficiencies exceeding 24%, the poor photostability, especially with ultraviolet irradiance (UV) severely limits commercial application. The most commonly‐used TiO2 electron selective layer has a strong photocatalytic effect on perovskite/TiO2 interface when TiO2 is excited by UV light. Here a UV‐inert ZnTiO3 is reported as the electron selective layer in planar PSCs. ZnTiO3 is a perovskite‐structured semiconductor with excellent chemical stability and poor photocatalysis. Solar cells are fabricated with a structure of indium doped tin oxide (ITO)/ZnTiO3/Cs0.05FA0.81MA0.14PbI2.55Br0.45/Sprio‐MeOTAD/Au. The champion device exhibits a stabilized power conversion efficiency of 19.8% with improved photostability. The device holds 90% of its initial efficiency after 100 h of UV soaking (365 nm, 8 mW cm−2), compared with 55% for TiO2‐based devices. This work provides a new class of electron selective materials with excellent UV stability in perovskite solar cell applications.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have rapidly developed and achieved power conversion efficiencies of over 20% with diverse technical routes. Particularly, planar‐structured PSCs can be fabricated with low‐temperature (≤150 °C) solution‐based processes, which is energy efficient and compatible with flexible substrates. Here, the efficiency and stability of planar PSCs are enhanced by improving the interface contact between the SnO2 electron‐transport layer (ETL) and the perovskite layer. A biological polymer (heparin potassium, HP) is introduced to regulate the arrangement of SnO2 nanocrystals, and induce vertically aligned crystal growth of perovskites on top. Correspondingly, SnO2–HP‐based devices can demonstrate an average efficiency of 23.03% on rigid substrates with enhanced open‐circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.162 V and high reproducibility. Attributed to the strengthened interface binding, the devices obtain high operational stability, retaining 97% of their initial performance (power conversion efficiency, PCE > 22%) after 1000 h operation at their maximum power point under 1 sun illumination. Besides, the HP‐modified SnO2 ETL exhibits promising potential for application in flexible and large‐area devices.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted extensive attention due to their convenient fabrication and excellent photoelectric characteristics. The highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 25% has been realized. However, ZnO as electron transport layer based PSCs exhibit inferior PCE and stability because of the mismatched energy-band and undesirable interfacial recombination. Here, we introduce a thin layer of SnO2 nanocrystals to construct an interfacial engineering with gradient energy band and interfacial passivation via a facile wet chemical process at a low temperature. The best PCE obtained in this study reaches 18.36%, and the stability is substantially improved and maintains a PCE of almost 100% over 500 h. The low-temperature fabrication process facilitates the future application of ZnO/SnO2-based PSCs in flexible and stretchable electronics.

Abstract:In recent years, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved significant advancements in power conversion efficiency (PCE), with zinc oxide (ZnO) commonly used as an electron transport layer (ETL) due to its favorable properties. However, ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) often lead to poor-quality films, affecting electronic transmission and perovskite film growth, thereby limiting device performance. To address these issues, this study proposes a straightforward, cost-effective, and widely applicable strategy. By incorporating polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) into ZnO NPs, we achieved a denser, smoother, and more uniform ETL. This modification also optimizes the interface contact between the perovskite active layer and the ZnO NPs ETL. As a result, the PCE, short-circuit current density (JSC), and fill factor (FF) of PSCs with PVA-modified ETL improved significantly compared to the control devices, increasing from 17.59% to 19.89% and from 15.03% to 16.56% for CsFAPbI3 and MAPbI3 perovskite structures, respectively. Furthermore, the mixed ETL of PVA and ZnO NPs notably enhances the environmental stability of PSCs. This approach, combining an insulating polymer with ZnO NPs, offers a simple and economical pathway towards the commercialization of high-performance PSCs

Abstract:ZnO is considered as a potential electron transport layer (ETL) in solar cells due to its high charge carrier mobility and low‐temperature processability. However, it is challenging to obtain highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs) using low‐temperature ZnO ETL due to the poor chemical compatibility between ZnO and perovskite films. Hence, proper surface passivation strategies of ZnO ETL are developed to enhance the ZnO/perovskite interface stability for highly efficient PSCs. In this study, low‐temperature TiOx post‐treatment is performed to passivate the ZnO surface, suppress the interface charge recombination, and stabilize the ZnO/perovskite interface. The fullerene treatment is further applied to enhance the electron transfer from perovskite to ZnO and reduce the hysteresis behavior. Finally, high‐performance PSCs with an efficiency of over 20% and improved stability are achieved.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) appear to be the ideal future candidate for photovoltaic applications owing to the rapid development in recent years. The electron transport layers (ETLs) prepared by low-temperature process are essential for widespread implementation and large-scale commercialization of PSCs. Here, we report an effective approach for producing planar PSCs with Al3+ doped SnO2 ETLs prepared by using a low-temperature solution-processed method. The Al dopant in SnO2 enhanced the charge transport behavior of planar PSCs and increased the current density of the devices, compared with the undoped SnO2 ETLs. Moreover, the enhanced electrical property also improved the fill factors (FF) and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the solar cells. This study has indicated that the low-temperature solution-processed Al-SnO2 is a promising ETL for commercialization of planar PSCs.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted great attention in the past few years due to their rapid increase in efficiency and low-cost fabrication. However, instability against thermal stress and humidity is a big issue hindering their commercialization and practical applications. Here, by combining thermally stable formamidinium-cesium-based perovskite and a moisture-resistant carbon electrode, successful fabrication of stable PSCs is reported, which maintain on average 77% of the initial value after being aged for 192 h under conditions of 85 °C and 85% relative humidity (the "double 85" aging condition) without encapsulation. However, the mismatch of energy levels at the interface between the perovskite and the carbon electrode limits charge collection and leads to poor device performance. To address this issue, a thin-layer of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is introduced to achieve improved interfacial energy level alignment, which is verified by ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy measurements. Indeed as a result, power conversion efficiency increases from 12.2% to 14.9% after suitable energy level modification by intentionally introducing a thin layer of PEO at the perovskite/carbon interface.

Abstract:By harvesting both the optical and the structural properties of bottom–up‐synthesized colloidal carbon quantum dots (CQDs), a cost‐effective means to circumvent the UV‐induced degradation in efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs) without scarification on their power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) is provided. The achievement of both efficiency and stability in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) remains a challenging and actively researched topic. In particular, among different environmental factors, ultraviolet (UV) photons play a pivotal role in contributing to device degradation. In this work, by harvesting simultaneously both the optical and the structural properties of bottom–up‐synthesized colloidal carbon quantum dots (CQDs), a cost‐effective means is provided to circumvent the UV‐induced degradation in PSCs without scarification on their power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). By exploring and optimizing the number of CQDs and the different locations/interfaces of the solar cells where CQDs are applied, a synergetic configuration is achieved where the photovoltaic performance drop due to optical loss is completely compensated by the increased perovskite crystallinity due to interfacial modification. As a result, on the optimized configurations where CQDs are applied both on the exterior front side as an optical layer and at the interface between the electron transport layer and the perovskite absorber, unencapsulated PSCs with PCEs >20% are fabricated which can maintain up to ≈94% of their initial PCE after 100 h of degradation in ambient air under continuous UV illumination (5 mW cm−2).

Abstract:Organometal halide perovskite solar cells have reached a high power conversion efficiency of up to 25.8% but suffered from poor long-term stability against environmental factors such as ultraviolet irradiation and humidity of the environment. Herein, two different multifunctional transparent coatings containing AZO and ZnO porous UV light absorbers were employed on the front of the PSCs. This strategy is designed to improve the long-term stability of PSCs against UV irradiation. Moreover, the provided coatings exhibit two additional roles, including self-cleaning and high wear resistance. In this regard, AZO coating showed higher wear resistance compared to the ZnO coating. The photocatalytic self-cleaning properties of these prepared coatings make them stable against environmental pollutants. Furthermore, appropriate mechanical properties such as high hardness and low coefficient of friction that leads to high resistance against wear are other features of these coatings. The devices with AZO/Glass/FTO/meso-TiO 2 /Perovskite/spiro/Au and ZnO/Glass/FTO/meso-TiO 2 /Perovskite/spiro/Au configurations maintained 40% and 30% of their initial performance for 100 h during 11 days (9 h per day) against the UV light with the high intensity of 50 mW cm -2 which is due to higher absorption of AZO compared with ZnO in the ultraviolet region. Since AZO has a higher light transmission in the visible region in comparison to ZnO, perovskite cells with AZO protective layers have higher efficiency than perovskite cells with ZnO layers. It is worth noting that the mentioned features make these coatings usable for cover glass in all types of solar cells.

Abstract:Organic–inorganic lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with TiO2-based architectures have emerged for highly efficient photovoltaic conversion in recent years, while their serious light soaking instability limits their practical applications. Here, we have successfully introduced fullerene [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid 2-((2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)(methyl)-amino)-ethyl ester (PCBDAN) as an interfacial modifier for the TiO2 electron transport layer (ETL) in planar PSCs, which can significantly improve the photovoltaic conversion efficiency and light soaking stability of the devices. The quality of the perovskite film and electron extraction efficiency between the perovskite and ETL are both improved by introducing the PCBDAN interfacial layer. An improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.78% can be obtained for the device with PCBDAN under AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW cm−2). And the light soaking stability of the planar device is greatly improved after modification. This work provides a feasible way by interfacial modification for the realization of highly efficient devices without light-soaking degradation.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have experienced rapid development in the past period of time, and a record efficiency of up to 25.7% has been yielded. At present, the PSCs with the planar structure are the most prevailing, which not only can significantly simplify the device fabrication process but also reduce the processing temperature. Particularly, the electron transport layer (ETL) plays a critical role in boosting the device performance of planar PSCs. ZnO is a promising candidate as the ETL owing to its high transparency, suitable energy band structure, and high electron mobility. Moreover, ZnO is easy to be processed at a low cost and low energy. This review mainly summarized the recent advances in the application and strategic optimization of ZnO ETL for planar PSCs. The basic properties of ZnO, including energy levels, mobility, processability, trap defects, as well as chemical stability, are clearly clarified. The most available deposition means for preparing ZnO ETLs were also described briefly. Finally, we presented the challenges and guidelines for utilizing ZnO as ETL on efficient planar PSCs.

Efficient and stable perovskite solar cells thanks to dual functions of oleyl amine-coated PbSO4(PbO)4 quantum dots: Defect passivation and moisture/oxygen blocking

Abstract:The defects in perovskite crystals and the penetration of moisture/oxygen into the perovskite layer are major problems for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to achieve long-term stability and high power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, there is still a lack of multifunctional passivation materials to solve these problems. Herein, for the first time, we report oleyl amine-coated PbSO4(PbO)4 quantum-dots (QDs), as a passivation material with dual functions to simultaneously passivate the surface defects and block the penetration of moisture/oxygen into the perovskite layer for stable and efficient PSCs. The PbSO4(PbO)4 QDs significantly reduce the defect density of the as-prepared CH3NH3PbI3 films by passivating under-coordinated Pb ions and I anions and effectively enhance charge extraction efficiency at the TiO2/CH3NH3PbI3 and CH3NH3PbI3/spiro-OMeTAD interfaces. Moreover, the hydrogen bond between H atoms of the OA and I atoms of the perovskite and the interface electric field at CH3NH3PbI3/OA interface also contribute to the improvement of efficiency and stability of PSCs. Finally, higher PCE (20.02%) is achieved by the PSCs with OA-coated PbSO4(PbO)4 QDs compared to that (16.86%) of the PSCs without OA-coated PbSO4(PbO)4, corresponding to a 18.7% enhancement. Moreover, the PSCs with OA-coated PbSO4(PbO)4 QDs maintain 90% of initial efficiency after operation for 280 h, indicating better stability than the PSCs without PbSO4(PbO)4 QDs.

Alkali Metal Fluoride-Modified Tin Oxide for n–i–p Planar Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The practical applications of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are limited by further improvement of their stability and performance. Additive engineering and interface engineering are promising medicine to cure this stubborn disease. Herein, an alkali metal fluoride as an additive is introduced into the tin oxide (SnO2) electron transport layer (ETL). The formation of coordination bonds of F– ions with the oxygen vacancy of Sn4+ ions decreases the trap-state density and improves the electron mobility; the hydrogen bond interaction between the F ion and amine group (FA+) of perovskite inhibits the diffusion of organic cations and promotes perovskite (PVK) stability. Meanwhile, the alkali metal ions (K+, Rb+, and Cs+) permeated into PVK fill the organic cation vacancies and ameliorate the crystal quality of PVK films. Consequently, a SnO2-based planar PSC exhibits a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.24%, while the PSC modified by CsF achieves a PCE of 22.51%, accompanied by effective enhancement of stability and negligible hysteresis.
