Tourism Disciplinary Creativity and Knowledge System Construction Based on the Bibliometrics Analysis of Keywords in Tourism Tribune

Abstract:In academic research, researching keywords and collocations in academic papers to deduce discipline hotspots, frontier issues and knowledge systems has become a common research practice in recent years. It has been used in various disciplines of research, especially in the fields of information science, communication science and library science, and has resulted in some fruitful achievements. There are a few studies on the subject of keywords about tourism related information, but research disciplinary creativity and knowledge systems evolution and construction is still scant. This article investigates keywords in the journal Tourism Tribune from 2000 to 2014, and employs the bibliometric visualization software Citespace for statistical analysis. It creatively combines evaluation of disciplinary creativity with knowledge systems together for content analysis. The potential creativity of the discipline, and the creative vigor and sustainability of creativity, defined as variation“V”and reverse“V”, in addition to the potential creativity and creative vigor increased slightly in 2000-2004, the sustainability of creativity in 2000-2004, and all kinds of innovation in 2005-2009 and 2010-2014 were relatively stable. To understand the V type variation of discipline creativity potential, it is important to refer to the represented research field between the main keywords because the potential creativity is measured by the crossover rate between the main keywords. The internal mechanism of the crossover rate refers to the interchange of disciplines inside and outside different research fields (understood as the innovative potential of the individual research field of the discipline, referring mainly to tourism resources planning and development), which was high in 2000-2004, whereas the innovative potential of these last two elements of the single research field is low. The evolution of the discipline’s knowledge system is shown by the evolution of the discipline’s content and methods. The content of the system is tourism resources planning and development, tourism impact and quality, and the evolution of tourism destination experience research, the essence is the evolution of quantity-quality-spirit level. The methods are qualitative methods-quantitative methods-combining with the quality and quantity. To build the framework of tourism discipline knowledge system, which is composed of three parts:research content, method and purpose. The research content refers mainly to the tourism industry and its components, tourists, the tourism market, tourism destinations, and research into tourism types. The research methods are the quantification methods of representative factor analysis and structural equation models, as well as comparative studies that reflect the quality of the method. This study is performed within two branches of inquiry, theoretical research and applied research. The journal Tourism Tribune is thoroughly discussed as the research object. The study is constructed based on the theory of analytic generalization. This emphasizes typicality and reflects the homogeneity of the range of high-level academic tourism journals. Finally, the purpose of the study is to foster innovation within the discipline to view the evolution of the discipline’s knowledge system by analyzing research hotspots and frontier issues within the discipline, rather than identifying problems based on study of the literature on discipline innovation. Ultimately, to grasp the rules of discipline development, it is necessary for the analysis to combined discipline innovation and knowledge system evolution.
