Abstract:Switchable materials, due to their potential applications in the fields of sensors, photonic devices, digital processing, etc., have been developed drastically. However, they still face great challenges in effectively inducing multiple molecular switching. Herein organic-inorganic hybrid compounds, an emerging class of hydrosoluble optoelectronic-active materials, welcome a new member with smart unique optical/electrical (fluorescence/dielectric) dual switches (switching ON/OFF), that is, [C5H13NBr][Cd3Br7] (1) in the form of both a bulk crystal and an ultraflexible monodirectional thin film, which simultaneously exhibits fast dielectric/fluorescent dual switching triggered by an optical/thermal/electric signal with a high signal-to-noise ratio of 35 (the highest one in the known optical/dielectric dual molecular switches). Additionally, the exceptional stability/fatigue resistance as well as the fantastic extensibility/compactness of thin films (more than 10000 times folding over 90°), makes 1 an ideal candidate for single-molecule intelligent wearable devices and seamlessly integrated optoelectronic multiswitchable devices. This opens up a new route toward advanced light/electric high-performance switches/memories based on organic-inorganic hybrid compounds.

Abstract:Optical‐electrical duple bistable switches are those that enable simultaneous conversion of both optical and electrical signals in one device to realize seamless integration. Herein, imidazolium‐FCrO3 can be prepared into a large‐size single crystal and ultraflexible thin film with ultrahigh unidirectionality of (0 0 4) and is characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), powder X‐ray diffraction, etc. Both the thin film and crystal display synchronously eximious optoelectronic duple characteristics (dielectric and nonlinear optical second harmonic generation (SHG) bistable switching ON/OFF), with a record‐high SHG contrast of ≈250 (2.0 times that of KDP, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, exceeding all the known molecular materials/crystalline switches, revealing its potential to obtain high‐efficiency signal‐to‐noise ratio), sensitive dielectric bistability, and remarkable switching antifatigue. These attributes make imidazolium‐FCrO3 a potential candidate in photoelectric seamless integration devices and flexible multifunctional devices.
Challenge in Optoelectronic Duplex Switches: a Red Emission Large-Size Single Crystal and a Unidirectional Flexible Thin Film of a Hybrid Multifunctional Material

Abstract:Photoelectric dual-function features in bulk crystals or flexible thin films make them excellent candidates for important and thriving applications in storage, sensing and other information fields. Based on superior advantages such as easy and environmentally friendly processing, mechanical flexibility, and ability to fabricate films and bulk single crystals; we designed a type of molecular material with a photoelectric multi-function switch, [N(NH2CH2CH2)3]2Mn2Cl12 (compound 1), which exhibits intriguing temperature-dependent dielectric and red emission switchable characteristics. This material perfectly explains the advantages of molecular materials, while 1 can also be used to fabricate a transparent unidirectional film with ultra-flexibility. Moreover, this material shows the highest record in signal contrast of ∼5 (exceeding all the known molecular materials/crystalline switches, revealing its potential to obtain high-efficiency signal-to-noise ratio), sensitive dielectric bi-stability, and excellent switching anti fatigue. These features give it a high application value in integrated circuits, optoelectronic seamless integration devices and flexible multifunctional devices.

Abstract:Multifunctional materials enable the integration of multiple physical signals in a single device for seamless integration, offering new opportunities in areas such as modern smart devices. For the needs of flexible devices, molecular functional materials are highly preferred due to their structural tunability, environmental friendliness and easy film formation. However, designing such multifunctional materials suitable for thin film devices has always been a huge challenge, especially semiconducting switchable dielectrics. Considering the unique structural properties and mechanical flexibility of plastic crystals, we have successfully designed an excellent multifunctional material, (N,N-dimethylpiperidinium)(3)Bi2Cl9, which shows outstanding dielectric switching and semiconducting behavior comparable to ZnO. The plastic phase transition below room temperature and multiaxial characteristics caused by structural variation give its thin film preferred structural flexibility, good uniformity and stability. These attributes make it a potential candidate in flexible multifunctional devices, realizing the high-performance integration of semiconducting and switchable properties.

Abstract:A dual-frequency liquid crystal based optical switch with orthogonally photo-patterned alignments is designed and fabricated. The cell gap is theoretically optimized for high switching performance. The measured extinction ratio of first diffraction order is over 20 dB with a low electric field of 3 V/mu m. The switch On-Off time are measured to be 350 mu s and 600 mu s, respectively, both of which have reached submillisecond scale. Moreover, the switch is polarization independent, which has been predicted theoretically and further proved experimentally. Abstract:Abstract The multifaceted switches are part of our everyday life from the macroscopic to the molecular world. A molecular switch operating in the solution and in the crystalline state is very different. In this review, we summarize the state‐of‐the‐art of smart molecular crystal switches based on molecular martensites. These crystal switches respond to external stimuli and reversibly change between states, retaining their macroscopic integrity. The operation of the switches predominantly relies on temperature alterations or mechanical stress, with emerging methods based on photothermal effects, photoisomerization, and host‐guest chemistry. The capability of changing the molecular orientation and interaction in smart molecular crystal switches offers opportunities in several applications, including actuators, reversibly shaping structural materials, optoelectronic and magnetic materials, as well as switchable porous materials. Smart molecular crystal switches have vast potential in modern scientific and technological progress. The ongoing research shapes a rich landscape for innovation and future scientific exploration across diverse disciplines.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic Hybrid (OIH) materials for multifunctional switchable applications have attracted enormous attention in recent years due to their excellent optoelectronic properties and good structural tunability. However, it still remains challenging to fabricate one simple OIH compound with multi-functionals properties, such as dielectric switching, thermochromic properties, semiconductor characteristics and ferroelasticity. Under this context, we successfully synthesized [2-(2-fluorophenyl)ethan-1- ammonium](2)SnBr6 (compound 1), which has a higher phase transition temperature of 427.7 K. Additionally, it exhibits a semiconducting property with an indirect band gap of 2.36 eV. Combining ferroelastic, narrow band gap, thermochromic, and dielectric properties, compound 1 can be considered as a rarely reported multi-functional ferroelastic material, which is expected to give inspiration for broadening the applications in the smart devices field.

Abstract:With the flourishing development of star molecule (CH 3 NH 3 )PbI 3 , organic-inorganic perovskites with multifunction and flexibility have become a worldwide focus. However, the controllable photoelectric switchable material (especially electric, optical, thermal multifunctional switches) still face great challenges, and most of them are ceramic and toxic lead-based series. Herein a lead-free perovskite-like crystal and flexible thin film, ImMC (ImMC = (HIm) 6 ∙[MnCl 4 ∙MnCl 6 ]) (1), with many advantages over inorganic ceramics and lead-based perovskites, performs ideal optical and dielectric duple switching properties simultaneously. The order-disordered HIm (Im = imidazole) cations of α-type occupy two lattice sites corresponding to “Switch-ON/0” and “Switch-OFF/1” states, respectively. Interestingly, the optical and dielectric “ON/OFF or 0/1” switches can be integrated into one single-molecule single/duple channel module with high signal-noise ratio, in which the “ON/OFF” response can be precisely controlled by temperature or/and light wavelength signal to realize automatically multiple switching. In brief, the lead-free multifunctional switch opens up a brand new route and shows the mark of its real genius as a highly desirable material for its advanced applications in highly integrated circuit and ultrahigh-encrypted storage in flexible photoelectric devices.

Abstract:In this study, a novel light switch was developed by integrating polymer dispersion liquid crystals (PDLC) and polymer-stabilised cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLC), leveraging the infrared shielding properties of these two liquid crystal films. The optimal formulation for each layer of the liquid crystal structure was investigated. Subsequently, the effects of light intensity, high temperature, and humidity on the performance of the light switch were examined. This new light switch can be selectively driven layer by layer at room temperature, achieving three states: the off state, PDLC layer-driven state, and full-driven (on state). This functionality serves the purpose of electrogenerated temperature control. Samples under optimal conditions exhibited a 31% enhancement in infrared shielding compared to a single-layer PDLC film. Moreover, the IR shielding rate could be adjusted according to the voltage applied, realising an intelligent temperature-control effect. The results of this study suggest that such bilayer liquid crystal structures hold significant potential for application in electro-optical devices and smart curtain systems.

Abstract:The dense and ordered molecular arrangements endow dynamic molecular crystals with fast response, rapid energy conversion, low energy dissipation, and strong coupling between heat/light and mechanical energy. Most of the known dynamic crystals can only respond to a single stimulus, and materials that can respond to multiple stimuli are rare. Here, we report an organic crystalline material that can be bent plastically and is also thermosalient, as its crystals can move when they undergo a reversible phase transition. The crystals transmit light regardless of their shape or crystalline phase. The combination of light transduction and reversible thermomechanical deformation provides an opportunity to switch the waveguiding capability of the material in a narrow temperature range, which holds a tremendous potential for applications in heat-averse electronic components, such as central processing units. Unlike existing electronics, the material we report here is completely organic and therefore much lighter, potentially reducing the overall weight of electronic circuits.

Abstract:A dual-frequency liquid crystal polarization grating is fabricated by photoalignment and demonstrated as an optical switch. A high diffraction efficiency up to 95% is obtained for a single first order with circular incident polarization. Via merely alternating the frequency of applied electric field, the switch On and Off time reach 350 mu s and 550 mu s, respectively. Abstract:Molecular optical-electrical duple switches (switch "ON" and "OFF" bistable states) represent a class of highly desirable intelligent materials because of their sensitive switchable physical and/or chemical responses, simple and environmentally friendly processing, light weights, and mechanical flexibility. In the current work, the phase transition of 1 (general formula R2MX5, [C5N2H16](2)[SbBr5]) can be triggered by the order disorder transition of the organic cations at 278.3 K. The temperature-induced phase transition causes novel bistable optical-electrical duple characteristics, which indicates that 1 might be an excellent candidate for a potential switchable optical-electrical (fluorescence/dielectric) material. In the dielectric measurements, remarkable bistable dielectric responses were detected, accompanied by striking anisotropy along various crystallographic axes. For the intriguing fluorescence emission spectra, the intensity and position changed significantly with the occurrence of the structural phase transition. We believe that these findings might further promote the application of halogenoantimonates(III) and halogenobismuthates (III) in the field of optoelectronic multifunctional devices.

Abstract:Multifunctional switchable materials are attracting tremendous interest because of their great application potential in signal processing, information encryption, and smart devices. Here, we reported an organic-inorganic hybrid thermochromic ferroelastic crystal, [TMIm][CuCl 4 ]（TMIm = 1,1,3,3-tetramethylimidazolidinium）, which undergoes two reversible phase transitions at 333 K and 419 K, respectively. Intriguingly, these three phases experience a remarkable ferroelastic-paraelastic-ferroelastic（2/m-mmm-2/m） transition, which remains relatively unexplored in ferroelastics. Moreover, the ferroelastic domains can be simultaneously switched under temperature and stress stimuli. Meanwhile,[TMIm][CuCl 4 ] exhibits thermochromic phenomenon, endowing it with extra spectral encryption possibilities during information processing. Combined with dielectric switching behavior, [TMIm][Cu Cl 4 ] are promising for practical applications in memory devices, next-generation sensors, and encryption technology.

Abstract:Flexible electrochromic (EC) devices are highly desirable in smart applications. Although flexible devices with up to three states have been demonstrated in previous work, the goal of EC device with characteristics of the multistate property, flexible compatibility, fast switching speed is still hard to achieve. In this work, we successfully developed a five-state flexible dynamic window (FFDW) based on Bi and Cu bimetal reversibly deposited system. This device possesses transparent state, grey state, black state, cupreous mirror state and silvery mirror state via a precise voltage control strategy. More excitingly, the phenomenon of two mirror states obtained in one device is firstly reported. This FFDW, which can be bended for more than 50 times, exhibits fast switching speed of 2.34 s for complete stripping and 11.12 s for tinting, with a more than 63% transmittance modulation range at black state and an over 60% reflectance modulation range at mirror state. Finally, we unveiled the mechanism accounting for the voltage-dependent rich optical states in details. Our findings are helpful for developing high-performance dynamic windows for application in smart homes, vehicles and wearable devices.

Abstract:We demonstrate a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) smart window that functions as a reversible thermo-optic switch between a transparent state at a low temperature and a low-transmission state at a higher temperature. This smart window is based on the addition of a thermoresponsive handedness-reversible chiral dopant in a mixture of a typical chiral dopant, a dichroic dye and nematic liquid crystal, yielding a thermosensitized CLC. In such a homeotropically anchored dye-doped CLC, the thickness-to-pitch ratio increases as the temperature rises, causing the device to switch from the homeotropic texture to the fingerprint texture. The absorption characteristic of the dichroic dye enables the homeotropic and fingerprint configurations in the dye-doped CLC to create two distinct transmission levels—the transparent and opaque optically stable states, respectively. Such a switching mechanism entails no additional electric power and, thus, is energy-saving. Moreover, the switching temperature at which the texture transition takes place can be actively increased by increasing voltage for the smart window. This allows the CLC device to be perfectly adaptable to the need of a user and, in turn, applicable to a wider variety of environments.

Abstract:AbstractSimplified and energy-efficient electronic devices that respond to multiple external stimuli (e.g., voltage, light, and mechanical stress) are needed for nascent technologies ranging from soft robotics and neuromorphic computing to Internet-of-Things1-3. Yet most research to-date focused on one switching modality with one stimulus4-6. Here we align materials design with device technology by introducing mechanical control over photoswitching leading to a new type of dual-gated molecular switch. While molecular switches are inherently energy-efficient7, theoretically ultrafast molecular photoswitches showed disappointing performance to-date, with small on/off ratio of electric current, poor reproducibility, and slow or stochastic switching8,9. It has been particularly challenging to develop efficient photoswitches in molecular tunnel junctions due to quenching and spontaneous back-switching10. On the other hand, molecular mechanical switches have been seldom reported11, despite wide implementation of mechanically-controlled switches12-14. Here, we use mechanical bending of the supporting electrode to direct molecular self-assembly of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active molecules15,16, which allows us modulate the current under both light and mechanical force. This results in rapid, strong, reliable and sustained molecular switching. The high-performance photoswitch is 10-100 times faster than other approaches with on/off ratio of (3.8±0.1)×103during 1600 bright/dark cycles under mechanical force, providing an alternative design route for flexible electronics and optomechatronics.

Abstract:Highly-efficient molecular photoswitching occurs ex-situ but not to-date inside electronic devices due to quenching of excited states by background interactions. Here we achieve fully reversible in-situ mechano-optoelectronic switching in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of tetraphenylethylene molecules by bending their supporting electrodes to maximize aggregation-induced emission (AIE). We obtain stable, reversible switching across >1600 on/off cycles with large on/off ratio of (3.8 ± 0.1) × 10 3 and 140 ± 10 ms switching time which is 10-100× faster than other approaches. Multimodal characterization shows mechanically-controlled emission with UV-light enhancing the Coulomb interaction between the electrons and holes resulting in giant enhancement of molecular conductance. The best mechano-optoelectronic switching occurs in the most concave architecture that reduces ambient single-molecule conformational entropy creating artificially-tightened supramolecular assemblies. The performance can be further improved to achieve ultra-high switching ratio on the order of 10 5 using tetraphenylethylene derivatives with more AIE-active sites. Our results promise new applications from optimized interplay between mechanical force and optics in soft electronics.
