Abstract:High anode overpotential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) restricts the upscale applications of water electrolysis. We attempt to address such technical challenges through the design and preparation of a group of nanoporous (Fe–Ni–Co)-based metallic glasses (NP–FeNiCo-MGs) as electrocatalyts of OER. The nanoporous structure is yielded through electrochemical selective dissolution of active Fe solid solution phase in free-surface layer of (Fe–Ni–Co)-based amorphous-nanocrystalline alloys (FeNiCo-ANs). Electrochemical tests reveal that integral composite electrodes combining with a catalytic layer of NP-FeNiCo-MGs and a current collector of FeNiCo-ANs exhibit high catalytic activity towards water oxidation in 1 M KOH solutions, which only requires an overpotential of 274 mV to yield a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Studies of electrochemical states and electrode-electrolyte reaction process of the NP-FeNiCo-MGs during OER unveil plausible working mechanisms driving such promising catalytic activities. Based on the merits of a broad tunable range of compositions of active elements for OER, homogeneous distribution of metastable atoms, and high-surface-area nanoporous structure strongly combining with high-conductive substrate, the proposed nanoporous metallic-glass composite electrodes are of great significance for a variety of applications for clean energy.

Abstract:Low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are the key to electrolytic water splitting of water to produce high purity hydrogen as a green energy source. Construction of nanoarrays on conductive substrates is an effective way to obtain high OER performance, due to the high surface area, enhanced mass diffusion and low interface resistance between catalysts and collectors. To achieve these merits, effective control in the composition, phase structure and size of nanoarrays is highly desirable. Herein, nanosheet arrays of single-phase Co3O4, NiO and Co3O4/NiO nanocomposites were directly grown on carbon cloth by an electrodeposition method. The composition can be finely tuned via changing the Ni2+/Co2+ ratio in the electrodeposition solution. The thickness and plane size of the nanosheets can be also well controlled. The effects of size, composition and phase on the OER activity were investigated in detail. The optimized nanosheet arrays were further coated with a NiO layer to achieve an even enhanced OER activity.
Nano-Patterned Pt-Based Metallic Glass Electrocatalysts with In-Situ Copper Oxide Foam for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Hydrogen is a promising energy carrier for replacing fossil fuels, and hydrogen production via hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an environmentally friendly option if electrocatalysts with low overpotentials and long-term stability are used. In this work, the electrocatalytic performance of $\mathrm{Pt_{57.5}Cu_{14.7}Ni_{5.3}P_{22.5}}$ bulk metallic glass (BMG) with flat, micro-patterned, and nano-patterned surfaces for HER in 0.5 M H2SO4 is studied. The nano-patterned Pt-BMG demonstrates outstanding long-term stability and self-improving behavior with a final overpotential of 150 mV and a Tafel slope of 42 $\mathrm{mV dec^{-1}}$ after 1000 linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) cycles, which is respectively 42% and 37% lower than in the first LSV cycle. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) indicate the formation of a layer of CuO/Cu2O foam deposited on top of the nano-patterned surface during the stability test of 1000 LSV cycles. A three-step process is proposed to explain the formation of CuxO foam via dynamic hydrogen bubble templating (DHBT) electrodeposition from Cu dissolution of the Pt-BMG without using copper salt. This work provides a method to create CuxO foams that could be used for various applications. Moreover, nano-patterned BMGs with DHBT deposition offer a feasible strategy to synthesize metal or metal-oxide foams.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and durable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under both alkaline and acidic media is crucial for the future development of a hydrogen economy. However, state-of-the-art high-performance electrocatalysts recently developed are based on carbon carriers mediated by binding noble elements and their complicated processing methods are a major impediment to commercialization. Here, inspired by the high-entropy alloy concept with its inherent multinary nature and using a glassy alloy design with its chemical homogeneity and tunability, we present a scalable strategy to alloy five equiatomic elements, PdPtCuNiP, into a high-entropy metallic glass (HEMG) for HER in both alkaline and acidic conditions. Surface dealloying of the HEMG creates a nanosponge-like architecture with nanopores and embedded nanocrystals that provides abundant active sites to achieve outstanding HER activity. The obtained overpotentials at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 are 32 and 62 mV in 1.0 m KOH and 0.5 m H2SO4 solutions, respectively, outperforming most currently available electrocatalysts. Density functional theory reveals that a lattice distortion and the chemical complexity of the nanocrystals lead to a strong synergistic effect on the electronic structure that further stabilizes hydrogen proton adsorption/desorption. This HEMG strategy establishes a new paradigm for designing compositionally complex alloys for electrochemical reactions.

Abstract:Platinum-based catalysts are widely used in hydrogen evolution reactions; however, their applications are restricted because of the cost-efficiency trade-off. Here, we present a thermodynamics-based design strategy for synthesizing an Al73Mn7Ru20 (atomic %) metal catalyst via combinatorial magnetron co-sputtering. The new electrocatalyst is composed of ~2 nanometers of medium-entropy nanocrystals surrounded by ~2 nanometers of amorphous regions. The catalyst exhibits exceptional performance, similar to that of single-atom catalysts and better than that of nanocluster-based catalysts. We use aluminum rather than a noble metal as the principal element of the catalyst and ruthenium, which is cheaper than platinum, as the noble metal component. The design strategy provides an efficient route for the development of electrocatalysts for use in large-scale hydrogen production. Moreover, the superior hydrogen reaction evolution created by the synergistic effect of the nano-dual-phase structure is expected to guide the development of high-performance catalysts in other alloy systems.
Recent Advances in Metallic Glass Nanostructures: Synthesis Strategies and Electrocatalytic Applications

Abstract:Recent advances in metallic glass nanostructures (MGNs) are reported, covering a wide array of synthesis strategies, computational discovery, and design solutions that provide insight into distinct electrocatalytic applications. A brief introduction to the development and unique features of MGNs with an overview of top-down and bottom-up synthesis strategies is presented. Specifically, the morphology and structural analysis of several examples applying MGNs as electrodes are highlighted. Subsequently, a comprehensive discussion of commonly employed kinetic parameters and their connection with the unique material structures of MGNs on individual electrocatalytic reactions is made, including the hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, and alcohol (methanol or ethanol) oxidation reaction. Finally, a summary of the challenges and perspective on the future research and development relevant to MGNs as electrocatalysts is provided.
An Ultrafast and Stable High-Entropy Metallic Glass Electrode for Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:A new type of high-entropy alloy with a composition of Pt25Pd25Ni25P25 (at.%) and an amorphous structure, referred to as a high-entropy metallic glass (HEMG), was developed by a scalable metallurgical technique for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The achieved overpotential was as low as 19.8 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 while maintaining an ultrareliable performance for 60 h in 1.0 M KOH solution, exhibiting 5- and 10-times higher performance than those of traditional Pt60Ni15P25 and Pd40Ni40P20 metallic glasses, respectively, and also surpassing the benchmark performance of commercial Pt/C nanoparticles and pure Pt sheet. Experimental and theoretical results revealed that the enhanced HER activity was ascribed to a synergistic function of multiprincipal components that optimized the electronic structure to accelerate the rate-determining steps in HER. Moreover, the unique long-range disordered structure provided a high density of unsaturated atomic coordination that was able to improve the amount of electrochemically active sites. This bulk HEMG strategy paves the way for the development of flexible freestanding electrodes for water splitting applications.

Abstract:Hydrogen is considered to be an ideal safe and clean energy source, which can be produced by water splitting. The high overpotential of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the bottleneck issues for the practical application of water splitting, where high-efficiency electrocatalysts are thus usually required to accommodate and facilitate the reaction. In recent years, a rapid rise in the HER electrocatalysts has been witnessed, especially nanostructured materials. Noble metals are generally regarded as the most effective electrocatalysts for HER, while some other electrocatalysts based on non-noble transition metals, including alloys, chalcogenides, phosphides, carbides and nitrides, can even approach the HER efficiency of noble metal benchmarks. This paper mainly introduces the basic principles of the HER process, evaluates different categories of nanostructured electrocatalytic materials, providing guidance for the design and fabrication of nanostructured HER catalysts. Moreover, recent progress and future research directions regarding the performance of metallic nanostructured materials are also discussed.Graphic

Abstract:Metallic glasses (MGs), with high density of low coordination sites and high Gibbs free energy state, are novel promising and competitive candidates in the family of electrochemical catalysts. However, it remains a grand challenge to modify the properties of MGs by control of the disordered atomic structure. Recently, nanostructured metallic glasses (NGs), consisting of amorphous nanometer-sized grains connected by amorphous interfaces, have been reported to exhibit tunable properties compared to the MGs with identical chemical composition. Here, it is demonstrated that electrodeposited Ni-P NG is characterized by an extremely high energy state due to its heterogeneous structure, which significantly promotes the catalytic performance. Moreover, the Ni-P NG with a heterogeneous structure is a perfect precursor for the fabrication of unique honey-like nanoporous structure, which displays superior catalytic performance in the urea oxidation reaction (UOR). Specifically, modified Ni-P NG requires a potential of mere 1.36 V at 10 mA cm-2 , with a Tafel slope of 13 mV dec-1 , which is the best UOR performance in Ni-based alloys. The present work demonstrates that the nanostructurization of MGs provides a universal and effective pathway to upgrade the energy state of MGs for the design of high-performance catalysts in energy conversion.

Nanoscale Heterogeneities of Non-Noble Iron-Based Metallic Glasses toward Efficient Water Oxidation at Industrial-Level Current Densities

Abstract:Scaling up the production of cost-effective electrocatalysts for efficient water splitting at the industrial level is critically important to achieve carbon neutrality in our society. While noble-metal-based materials represent a high-performance benchmark with superb activities for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, their high cost, poor scalability, and scarcity are major impediments to achieve widespread commercialization. Herein, a flexible freestanding Fe-based metallic glass (MG) with an atomic composition of Fe50Ni30P13C7 was prepared by a large-scale metallurgical technique that can be employed directly as a bifunctional electrode for water splitting. The surface hydroxylation process created unique structural and chemical heterogeneities in the presence of amorphous FeOOH and Ni2P as well as nanocrystalline Ni2P that offered various active sites to optimize each rate-determining step for water oxidation. The achieved overpotentials for the oxygen evolution reaction were 327 and 382 mV at high current densities of 100 and 500 mA cm-2 in alkaline media, respectively, and a cell voltage of 1.59 V was obtained when using the MG as both the anode and the cathode for overall water splitting at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Theoretical calculations unveiled that amorphous FeOOH makes a significant contribution to water molecule adsorption and oxygen evolution processes, while the amorphous and nanocrystalline Ni2P stabilize the free energy of hydrogen protons (ΔGH*) in the hydrogen evolution process. This MG alloy design concept is expected to stimulate the discovery of many more high-performance catalytic materials that can be produced at an industrial scale with customized properties in the near future.

Abstract:An effective method based on hybridization strategy and de-alloying nanoporosity is reported for increasing the electrocatalytic activity of metallic glasses (MGs) in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Based on the alloying of noble Au, the electrochemical performance reaches the maximum at 3 at. % Au addition. An overpotential as low as 124 mV at 10 mA·cm–2 and a Tafel slope of 69 mV·dec–1 are achieved. Such a superior catalytic performance is attributed to the large specific surface area with abundant active sites and low charge-transfer resistance. It is interesting to note that the Au3 sample has large mixing entropy, which is derived from sluggish atomic diffusion, and forms thin nanoligaments during de-alloying and thus exhibits a large specific surface area. The present work could lead to an approach to further develop environmentally friendly amorphous electrocatalysts with high efficiency and excellent stability for HER in alkaline solution.

Abstract:Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a vital step for green-hydrogen production in commercial alkaline water electrolyzers. Although various electrocatalysts have been developed, the relationship between structure and promoted HER have not been clearly understood. Herein, we report nanocrystalline CoO x glass composed of amorphous shell with nano-crystalline domains on Ni foam (NF) (denoted as (10CeCrP)CoO x -NF-HER) for alkaline HER. We find that (10CeCrP)CoO x -NF-HER exhibits high catalytic activity (a overpotential of -0.354 V at 200 mA cm -2 without iR correction) and good stability at high current density. Our experiment results reveal that the synergistic effects between the nanocrystalline domains and amorphous layers improve the HER kinetics dramatically because: (1) the amorphous CoO x enhances the pseudocapacitive K + adsorption, leading to high surface water affinity, (2) the interwoven crystalline and amorphous CoO x composite structure induces the slight distortion of CoO x skeleton without collapsing in the HER process, leading to promoted water cleavage and long-term stability, and (3) the high water and hydrogen concentrations on surface provides abundant feedstocks for HER and promote the hydrogen transportation and conversion. Our findings may provide an insightful understanding for the enhanced catalytic performance of poor-crystalline electrocatalysts and the effect of reconstruction on HER, and open a new avenue for the design of high-performance HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The characteristics of electrolyte wetting and gas release are of vital importance for the electrocatalytic activity of a hydrogen evolution electrode (HEE). Herein, we reported a strategy to synergistically optimize the electrolyte wetting and gas release of a HEE to enhance its electrocatalytic activity. In our work, Pt nanosheets arrays were electrochemically deposited on a conductive substrate of Au microgrid to form a HEE. The micropores of Au grids induced discontinuous solid/liquid two‐phase contact lines in microscale, which facilitated the wetting of proton‐contained electrolyte. Simultaneously, the superaerophobicity of HEE promoted the release of hydrogen gas products. The joint improvement on electrolyte wetting and gas release enhanced the current density of hydrogen evolution reaction at a high overpotential by ~300% when compared with Pt nanosheets arrays on a flat Au substrate.

Abstract:Metallic glasses (MGs, also known as amorphous alloys) have shown excellent hydrogen evolution performances due to the unique long-distance disorder atomic structures. Here, we demonstrate that the hydrogen evolution performances of MG can be greatly improved by introducing nanoscale heterogeneous structures. A nanoscale homogeneous Fe75B25 MG (Homo-MG) is prepared by melt-spinning, and then it is processed by severe plastic deformation to form a nanoscale heterogenous Fe75B25 MG (Hetero-MG). The hetero-MG shows superior activity and stability of hydrogen evolution compared with those of the homo-MG. The overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 of the hetero-MG is only 116 mV in 1 M KOH, which is much smaller than that of the homo-MG of 402 mV. Moreover, the hetero-MG shows very high and stable catalytic performances even at industrial level current densities (e.g., 300 mA cm−2) which could not be obtained in the homo-MG. This study clearly shows that fabrication of nanoscale heterogeneous structures is an effective strategy to improve the catalytic performances of MGs, and it also has a very positive guiding significance for further promoting the application of MG in energy conversion and storage, sewage degradation, catalysis, and other fields.

Abstract:Surface high‐entropy NiFeCoCuTi alloy on hierarchical nanoporous Ni skeleton holds great promise as low‐cost efficient electrocatalysts with multisite electroactive center for ampere‐level current‐density hydrogen evolution. Associated with column‐nanostructured nanoporous Ni skeleton that facilitates electron transfer/mass transportation and enables highly accessible and abundant electroactive sites, self‐supported monolithic nanoporous high‐entropy NiFeCoCuTi alloy exhibits superior nonacidic hydrogen‐evolution reaction electrocatalysis with exceptional stability. Developing robust nonprecious metal‐based electrocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction is crucial for large‐scale hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting. Herein, surface high‐entropy NiFeCoCuTi alloy on column‐nanostructured nanoporous Ni skeleton is reported as multisite electrocatalyst for highly efficient hydrogen evolution in nonacidic environments by making use of surface heterogeneous atoms with distinct hydrogen and hydroxyl adsorption behaviors to accelerate water dissociation and mediate adsorption of hydrogen intermediates for combination into molecules. Associated with the column‐nanostructured nanoporous Ni skeleton that facilitates electron transfer/mass transportation and enables highly accessible and abundant electroactive sites, self‐supported monolithic nanoporous high‐entropy NiFeCoCuTi alloy electrode exhibits superior nonacidic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysis, with low onset overpotentials and Tafel slopes. It only takes overpotential of as low as ≈209 mV to deliver ultrahigh current density of 2 A cm−2, along with exceptional stability for more than 240 h, in 1 m KOH electrolyte. These outstanding properties make nanoporous NiFeCoCuTi high‐entropy alloy (HEA) electrode attractive candidate as cathode material in the water electrolysis for large‐scale hydrogen production and suggest HEAs as ideal platform to develop multisite electrocatalysts.
