Abstract:The performance of pollutant removals, activated sludge characteristics, and microbial communities of two biofilm membrane bioreactors coupled with pre-anoxic tanks (BF-AO-MBRs) (one using fiber bundle bio-carriers (FB-MBR) and the other using suspended bio-carriers (MB-MBR)) were compared at the salinity between zero and 60 g/L. At all salinities, three bioreactors showed good COD average removal efficiencies (> 94.1%), and FB-MBR showed the best TN removal efficiency (90.4% at 30 g/L salinity). Moreover, FB-MBR had the faster process start-up time and better salt shock resistance. At high salinities (30-60 g/L), more extracellular polymeric substances were produced by the BF-AO-MBRs to avoid the penetration of salt and protect the bacterial community. Because of the different attachment patterns of biofilms, the microbial community structure in the FB-MBR exposed to 30 g/L salinity had higher nitrite-oxidizing/ammonia-oxidizing bacteria ratio (6.44) with more abundance of denitrifiers, which contribute to higher TN removal efficiency and lower nitrite accumulation.
Enhancement of Mariculture Wastewater Treatment Using Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors Filled with Modified Biocarriers: Characterisation, Process Performance and Microbial Community Evaluation

Abstract:This research investigated two proposed modified biofilm carriers' performances in treating recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) wastewater under different salinities (12%o, 26%o, and 35%o) for about 92 days. Three moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs; R1, R2, and R3) were filled with unmodified novel sponge biocarriers (SB) served as a control, modified novel SB with ferrous oxalate (C2FeO4@SB), and modified novel SB with combined ferrous oxalate and activated carbon (C2FeO4-AC@SB), respectively. Under the highest saline condition, a significantly higher ammonia removal efficiency of 98.86 +/- 0.7% (p > 0.05) was obtained in R3, whereas R2 and R1 yielded 95.18 +/- 2.8% and 91.66 +/- 1.5%, respectively. Microbial analysis showed that Vibrio, Ruegeria, Formosa, Thalassospira, and Denitromonas were predominant genera, strictly halophilic heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria involved in nitrogen removal. In conclusion, the synergistic effects of novel sponge, C2FeO4 and AC accelerated biofilm formations and stability, subsequently enhanced the removal of ammonia from the mariculture RAS wastewater by the C2FeO4-AC@SB carriers in R3.
Study on membrane fouling of submerged membrane bioreactor in treating bathing wastewater.

Abstract:A pilot-scale submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) was used to treat the bathing wastewater for more than 90 d. Several factors affecting membrane fouling were studied, including the variation in transmembrane pressure (TMP), changes in extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), and distribution of membrane resistance (R). The relationships between R and EPS concentration were found to be R =0.00008(EPSS)2.915 in the mixed liquor (EPSS) and R =0.2853(EPSm) − 0.824 on the membrane surface (EPSm). The constant resistance of the clean membrane (Rm), the resistance due to concentration polarization (Rp), the cake layer resistance (Rc), and the resistance due to pore blocking (Ri), were 0.006%, 20.15%, 54.13%, and 25.72% of R, respectively. The results indicated that Rc had the greatest contribution to the total membrane resistance. The obtained membrane resistance model was R(t) =4.609 × 108(1 + 0.01t)0.5. Molecular-based methods (polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gel gradient electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH)) were used to study the bacteria attached on the membrane. The 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis suggested that certain phylogenetic group of bacteria, for example, Pseudomonas sp. and Nitrobacter sp., might have contributed to the formation of membrane on biofilms.
An A/O submerged membrane bioreactor and its membrane fouling research in treating bathing wastewater

Abstract:A membrane bioreactor (MBR) process was used to, treat the bathing wastewater from Tongji University and the effluent was reclaimed to supply the water body of University. The influent LAS, Turbidity, BOD5, COD, SS, T-N and T-P averaged at 7, 110, 50, 108, 160, 36 and 0.6 mg/L respectively. The final treated effluent LAS, Turbidity, BOD5, COD, SS, T-N and T-P for the same period averaged 0.2, 0.4, 2, 15, 0, 6 and 0.02 mg/L respectively. The operating results of the process demonstrate that the MBR process is both effective and efficient in meeting the water discharge and reuse quality requirements (GB/T 18921-2002). Membrane fouling was analyzed by trans-membrane pressure (TMP), and floc size of sludge. Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) was used to analyze the microbial community structure on the surface of membrane in order to study the biofouling of membrane of MBR. The results indicated that the biofilm formation induced the membrane fouling and that some specific phylogenetic group of bacteria, the Pseudomonas sp., Ochrobactrum anthropi. sp. and Enterobacter sp., probably played a major role in the development of the biofilms, which led to the severe irreversible membrane biofouling.

A Study of a Composite Biofilm Reactor for the Treatment of Mariculture Wastewater: Performance and Microbial Communities

Abstract:Mariculture wastewater is one of the main sources of saline wastewater. This study used a waterfall aeration biofilm reactor combined with a sequencing batch reactor (WABR-SBR) to treat simulated mariculture sewage. Despite the high inhibition by salinity, the reactor maintained a high removal efficiency for organic matter and ammonium nitrogen. The ammonia nitrogen removal rate was greater than 99%, while that for nitrite, which is extremely toxic to farmed animals, was greater than 80%. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy showed that salinity affected the surface structure and composition of biofilms, which became compact and secreted more solute to resist the impact of salinity. High throughput 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that the main phyla in the biofilms were Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes. Metagenomic annotation of genes further indicated nitrogen metabolism pathways under high salinity. The conclusions of this study can provide a theoretical foundation for the biological treatment of high-salt wastewater and provide a technical reference for further application of the WABR-SBR composite system.

Abstract:The practical applications of water treatment techniques based on hydrophobic aeration membrane are limited due to membrane pores blocking. Various studies have revealed that both biofilm and microbial secretion can exacerbate membrane fouling. Recently, we constructed a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) system for treating micro-polluted surface water in order to identify the primary cause for oxygen transfer rate (OTR) decline. It was found that microbial secretion had a more prominent negative effect than that caused by biofilm, as manifested by the fact the effect of microbial secretion (66.49%) was greater than the resistance of biofilm (38.83%). Fouling decreased the total pore volume of all membrane. The peak location of adsorption capacity was more likely to occur at smaller pore sizes with longer running time. Notably, continuous fluorescence distribution between the separating layer and pores like finger in MABR system exhibited an increasing trend with the operation time, indicating a gradual increase of microbial viability. Core protein structure was revealed by different bond peaks (0–90 d). Specifically, for different organic components of EPS, the hydrophilic HIS was the main content, while the mass transfer resistance caused by the gel increased, which reduced the contact angle and increased the bubble point pressure. Therefore, effects of EPS content and composition should be considered during the application of water treatment techniques based on MABR.

Abstract:The operational performance of a submerged hollow fibre Membrane Bio-Reactor (MBR) for treatment of municipal wastewater on pilot scale was investigated. The experimental results indicated that the removal efficiency for SS, COD, NH4-N, turbidity, bacterium, iron (Fe2+) and Manganese (Mn2+) was 100%, 94.5%, 98.3%, 99.7%, lg6, 99%, 92.3%, respectively. The water quality of the effluent was quite good. The reclaimed water could be reused either directly or indirectly for municipal or industrial purposes. The MBR had a strong ability to resist loading shock and DO was a crucial factor to membrane fouling.

Abstract:Due to the increasing amount of urban sewage and improved standards in sewage discharge, simple traditional biological sewage treatment fails to meet the needs of municipal sewage treatment. Therefore, to treat wastewater more efficiently, the process of combining biofilm technology with traditional biological wastewater treatment appeared. This paper analyzes the advantages and problems of the combined processes of membrane separation technology and traditional biological sewage treatment technology from and perspective of complementary processes, and puts forward relevant measures to alleviate membrane fouling. The study found that Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology occupies a small area, and has a better sewage effluent quality and strong stability, also the sludge output is low. Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR) technology can increase the effectiveness of removing organic matter and enable resource reuse, which satisfies the demand for low energy consumption. Membrane Aeration Bioreactor (MABR) technology involves bubble-free aeration that greatly improves the quality of sewage effluent, and the production of sludge in MABR technology decreases. Anaerobic ammonium nitrogen membrane bioreactor technology can enhance the efficiency of Anammox bacteria, and the energy consumption and economic cost of this technology are low. Although these membrane combination processes can effectively treat sewage, they can easily be limited by factors such as temperature, microbial communities, and membrane fouling. This paper provides guiding opinions for decision makers in the field of urban sewage treatment so that they can apply appropriate sewage treatment technology to local municipal sewage treatment, promoting the sustainable development of sewage treatment.
Municipal solid waste leachate treatment by three-stage membrane aeration biofilm reactor system

Abstract:A combined process of coagulation pretreatment and three-stage membrane aeration biofilm reactor (MABR) system was successfully applied for the first time to treat actual municipal solid waste leachate (MSWL), which was characterized by high concentrations of toxic hard-to-degrade organics and salinity. The results showed that 9.8%-21.3% of organics could be removed from actual MSWL by coagulation with polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC). Three-stage MABR contributed 95.6% of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal, with the influent COD concentration ranging from 6000 to 7000 mg/L. At the same time, the removal efficiencies of total nitrogen (TN) and ammonia (NH4+-N) could reach to 84.3% and 79.9% without the addition of external carbon source, respectively. The nitrifying/denitrifying bacteria were enriched in the biofilm including Thiobacillus, Azoarcus and Methyloversatilis, which supported the MABR with high nitrogen removal efficiency and significantly toxic tolerance. Principal component analysis (PCA) and the Pearson correlation coefficients (r) illustrated that aeration pressure is a crucial operational parameter, exhibiting a strong correlation between the MABR performance and microbial communities. This work demonstrates that MABR is an effective and low-energy option for simultaneous removal of carbon and nitrogen in the treatment of MSWL.
A critical review on saline wastewater treatment by membrane bioreactor (MBR) from a microbial perspective

Abstract:This work has reviewed from a microbial perspective and listed the typical studies on MBR techniques for saline wastewater treatments. When the salinity of influent is lower than 10 g/L NaCl, conventional MBR can be easily applied with adjusted operating conditions. For better biodegradation and anti-fouling ability at higher salinities (10-100 g/L), modified and hybrid MBR systems may need to be wisely designed according to the change in the microbial community and contents of EPS/SMP. To treat hypersaline wastewaters with salinities of up to 100 g/L NaCl, inoculation of halophilic bacteria has been applied in MBR works. Microbial community structures in some typical works have been discussed from a microbial perspective to benefit the identification and isolation of halophilic bacteria for future works. The following aspects are also suggested in future MBR research for saline wastewater treatment: (1) The structure design of MBR and the manufacture of advanced membranes; (2) The maintenance of the microbial biodiversity for anti-membrane fouling; (3) The metabolic mechanism for halophilic (or salt-tolerant) microorganisms against salinity shocks; (4) The revolution stage and process of microorganisms during saline wastewater treatment in MBR; (5) The effects of characteristics (cell structure, shape and metabolic pathways) of microorganisms on the salt tolerance; (6) Applying halophilic microorganisms for salinities over 150 g/L NaCl.

Biodegradation of phenolic compounds in high saline wastewater by biofilms adhering on aerated membranes

Abstract:High saline phenolic wastewater is a typical toxic and refractory industrial wastewater. A single membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) was used to treat wastewater containing phenol, p-nitrophenol and hydroquinone under increasing phenolic loading and salinity conditions. More than 95 % of phenolic compounds were removed, and a removal efficiency of 8.9 g/m2 d for total phenolic (TP) contents was achieved under conditions with 32 g/L of salt and 763 mg/L of influent TP contents. The microbial diversity, structure and function of a biofilm exposed to different conditions were investigated by high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomics. Salinity and specific TP loading substantially affected the bacterial community. Gammaproteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Betaproteobacteria contributed more to initial phenolic compound degradation than other classes, with Pseudomonas and Rhodococcus as the main contributing genera. The key phenolic-degrading genes of different metabolic pathways were explored, and their relative abundance was strengthened with increasing phenolic loading and salinity. The diverse cooperation and competition patterns of these microorganisms further promoted the high removal efficiency of multiple phenolic contaminants in the biofilms. These results demonstrate the feasibility of MABR for degrading multiple phenolic compounds in high saline wastewater.

Abstract:The membrane for wastewater decontamination is an interesting alternative to conventional layered adsorbent filtration systems. Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) remove the residual biomass on the surface of the membranes irrespective of the settling properties of the sediment. Therefore, a high waste concentration as well as a low nutrient/microorganism ratio is required. In addition, the development process of a characteristic Layer Adsorption Filtration System (LAFS) community is favoured by the special properties of MBRs. This study will study the operating and treatment performance of MBR and infiltration processes and compare them with each other. The calculation was made using GPS-X software. The quality of the effluent received by the MBR system was better or equivalent to that obtained by adsorbent layer filtration (ALF). The main significant difference was the removal of total suspended solids (TSS), which reached up to 96% and also, organic matter in the MBR.

Abstract:In this study, the ceramic flat membrane bioreactor (MBR) was combined with the anaerobic/aerobic/anaerobic (AOA) process, providing a theoretical basis for the combined application of the two processes, as well as for the treatment of typical urban domestic wastewater (low C/N wastewater). The results showed that the AOA-MBR achieved 94.31%, 98.82%, 88.40% and 98.61% removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) from the target effluent, respectively, while the control AOA achieved 93.27%, 96.48%, 79.79% and 89.52% removal of COD, ammonia nitrogen, TN and TP, respectively. The coupled AOA-MBR process was significantly more efficient in utilising the internal carbon source in the endogenous denitrification stage than the AOA, without nitrification. Two process parameters, dissolved oxygen in the aerobic zone and sludge reflux ratio, were optimised for both reactors from the perspectives of optimising denitrification, phosphorus removal performance and decreasing operating costs, and optimum operating conditions were determined. The membrane fouling resistance was mainly caused by the filter cake layer, and the changes in the content and composition of the main membrane contaminants soluble microbial product (SMP) and extracellular polymers substance (EPS) during the process operation were identified. The addition of polymeric aluminium chloride had a certain adsorption effect on the SMP, which increased the average particle size of the activated sludge from 122.1 μm to 161.1 μm. Thus, the cake layer was loosened, which could slow down the rate of membrane fouling and prolonged the membrane fouling cycle to 19-20 days.
Effects of Online Chemical Cleaning on Removing Biofouling and Resilient Microbes in a Pilot Membrane Bioreactor

Abstract:Membrane biofouling in membrane bioreactor (MBR), resulted from microbes and their associated extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), is a primary challenge for wide application of MBR. However, the dynamic change of microbes attached on membrane remains little understood. In the study, a pilot MBR was constructed to estimate the effects of online chemical cleaning on membrane biofouling and meanwhile to study the microbial compositions and dynamic change before and after online chemical cleaning. Results showed that the trans-membrane pressure (TMP) increased with running time and online chemical cleaning temporarily eased TMP. Using the scanning electron microscopy, it was clearly observed that the microbes adhered into the EPS and formed biofilm before online chemical cleaning, and the biofilm was disrupted and most microbes on the membrane surface were removed after online chemical cleaning. EPS assay results showed that online chemical cleaning removed most protein and humic substances, but only a little part of polysaccharide. Microbial phylogenetic cluster displayed that some microbes attached on the membrane were clustered together and obviously separated from those in the mixed liquor sludge, indicating the special property of the microbes on the membrane. The microbial community dynamic analysis demonstrated that the dominant group on the membrane was changed from Burkholderiaceae to Flavobacteriaceae and Saprospiraceae after online chemical cleaning. Furthermore, some microbes such as Acinetobacter, Xanthomonas, Cloacibacterium and Flavobacterium were found to repeatedly cause the membrane fouling. The results might be helpful for developing biological-based cleaning method and antifouling strategies in the future.
Investigation and evaluation of membrane fouling in a microbial fuel cell-membrane bioreactor systems (MFC-MBR)

Abstract:Two membrane bioreactors with and without adding an electric circuit (named as MFC-MBR and C-MBR, respectively) were established to investigate the effects of micro-electric field on membrane fouling. With the aeration rate of 1.5 L/min, the synergistic effect of aeration and micro-electric field was the best in reducing membrane fouling and COD in treatment of a simulated phenol wastewater. Compared with C-MBR, the running time of MFC-MBR was extended for 16 days. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray detector (SEM-EDX) demonstrated that less foulants were attached to the membrane and the attachment was loosend in MFC-MBR. The decreased absolute value of zeta potential indicated repulsion among the negatively-charged sludge particles was reduced and flocculation of the sludge was improved, which alleviated the membrane fouling. The soluble microbial products (SMP) and loosely-bound extracellular polymeric substances (LB-EPS) were also decreased in MFC-MBR. It was found that migration and neutralization of the negatively-charged particles, and degradation of microorganisms contributed to the alleviation of membrane fouling. Moreover, the decreases of carbohydrates in LB-EPS led to higher protein/carbohydrates (PN/PS) ratio, which was a key parameter for alleviating membrane fouling. Meanwhile, the increase of tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (TB-EPS) could also slow down membrane fouling. Because TB-EPS can be used as a binder to strengthen the flocculation of sludge particles.

From around 19,000 sequences, 175 bacterial genera were retrieved, mainly belonging to Betaproteobacteria , Gammaproteobacteria , Alphaproteobacteria , Bacteroidetes , and Actinobacteria . A large number of unclassified bacterial sequences were also detected in the biofilm, suggesting a wide variety of uncharacterized species in MABR. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that influent chemical oxygen demand (COD), NH 4 -N, and NaHCO 3 concentrations could exert distinct influences on the composition of the bacterial community. The influent COD and NaHCO 3 concentrations stimulated proliferation of denitrification-related species such as Dokdonella , Azospira , Hydrogenophaga , Rhodocyclaceae , and Thauera , while inhibiting the growth of Acidovorax and Sinobacteraceae . Some denitrifying Thermomonas spp. tended to survive in NH 4 -N-rich environments, while Flavobacterium preferred to inhabit NH 4 -N-poor or COD-rich environments. Conversely, the influent NH 4 -N and NaHCO 3 , to some extent, appeared to be the growth-promoting factors for nitrifying bacteria. Furthermore, the presence of potential aerobic denitrifiers such as Comamonas , Enterobacter , and Aeromonas indicated that MABR could have the capability of simultaneous aerobic and anoxic denitrification particularly during treatment of low-ammonia nitrogen sewage.
Biodegradation performance and biofouling control of a halophilic biocarriers-MBR in saline pharmaceutical (ampicillin-containing) wastewater treatment

Abstract:This work develops a halophilic biocarriers-MBR for saline pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. The system has effectively treated the ampicillin-containing saline wastewater for 32 days, when the ampicillin concentration is lower than 20 mg/L. The system can tolerate the saline organic wastewater with a reasonable biodegradability (removals of COD over 75%) when the ampicillin concentration is 50 mg/L. The system has a bad performance in biodegradation (COD removals around 60-70%) and fouled within 16 days at a high ampicillin concentration of 100 mg/L. At high transmembrane pressures over 30 KPa, some ampicillin molecules may permeate through the membrane causing decreases in the ampicillin removal. The concentrations of protein and carbohydrate in EPS and SMP have increased over time and with increasing the ampicillin concentration. The method of biofouling control in MBR for the ampicillin situations has been proposed based on monitoring the concentrations of EPS and SMP. The drying-assisted monitoring of membrane biofoulants has showed a better efficiency than the monitoring of transmembrane pressure for membrane anti-biofouling in the treatment of pharmaceutical saline wastewaters where a spectroscopic detection can be hardly applied. This work may benefit relative research works for the control of biodegradation performance and membrane biofouling to better treat saline pharmaceutical wastewaters.
Treatment of Bathing Wastewater with Submerged Membrane Bioreactor

Abstract:A pilot-scale submerged membrane bioreactor with capacity of 10 m3/d was continuously operated for 216 days to treat bathing wastewater without any chemical cleaning.The effluent obtained was stable and excellent with COD＜40 mg/L,NH3-N＜0.5 mg/L,LAS＜0.2 mg/L,no color,no odor and free of SS,and could meet the quality standard for reused wastewater issued by the Ministry of Construction.Most pollutants were biologically removed by activated sludge while the stability of the effluent was ensured by the membrane separation.The membrane biological process was resistant to shock loading.Volumetric and sludge loading were 0.50～1.85 kgCOD/(m3*d) and 0.33～2.02 kgCOD/(kgVSS*d),respectively.The main contributors to the membrane fouling in this study were sludge adhesion on the some part of the outer membrane surface,gel layer formation with depth of 0～5 μm and growth of microorganisms inside the membrane.
