Abstract:Abstract In recent years, morphological controlled synthesis becomes a hot and important topic in order to maximize the active site and achieve high utilization of catalytic materials. In the meantime, the well-defined catalytic particle also keeps the structural simplicity, which is a perfect system for theoretical studies, for example, density functional theory (DFT). Besides exploring the mechanistic information about elementary steps, researchers start to use DFT as a tool to achieve fast screening of materials for potential catalyst with high efficiency and selectivity. However, it leads to a simple question: how reliable are the current used methods for the catalyst screening process? In this chapter, we follow the widely utilized rate volcano plot procedure and summarize the reliability of each stage during building up the screening plot: we start with the discussion on the error bar of the most widely used generalized gradient approximation level DFT calculations, estimated by recent developed Bayesian error estimation ensemble method. Then, we move to the area of kinetic modeling and mainly focus on the estimation of the surface entropy for adsorbed species and their influence on the calculated preexponential factor. In the next, we move to the errors caused by different types of scaling relations and their influence on the generated volcano plot. In the end, the limitations of the slab model are discussed.
