Abstract:Classifications and representations are two main topics in the theory of quadratic forms. In this paper, we consider these topics of ternary quadratic forms. For a given squarefree integer $N$, first we give the classification of positive definite ternary quadratic forms of level $4N$ explicitly. Second, we give explicit formulas of the weighted sum of representations over each class in every genus of ternary quadratic forms of level $4N$, which are involved with modified Hurwitz class number. In the proof of the main results, we use the relations among ternary quadratic forms, quaternion algebras, and Jacobi forms. As a corollary, we get the formula for the class number of positive ternary quadratic forms of level $4N$. As applications, we derive an explicit base of Eisenstein series space of modular forms of weight $3/2$ and level $4N$, and give new proofs of some interesting identities involving representation number of ternary quadratic forms.

Abstract:Abstract We establish a series of relations between the numbers of solutions of some positive definite ternary quadratic forms and the class numbers of the corresponding imaginary quadratic fields. Abstract:Let m be a positive integer satisfying m equivalent to 1 (mod 4) and (m/7) = 1. Then there exist integers x, y, epsilon Z such that m = x(2) + 7y(2) + 49z(2). Recent work of J. Coates, Y. Li, Y. Tian and S. Zhai ([1]) shows that this conclusion is useful in the study of the arithmetic of elliptic curves. The above m can be represented also by either x2 + 14y2 + 28z2 + 14yz or 2x(2) + 4y(2) + 49z(2) + 2xy. Moreover, if m = 1 (mod 8) and (m/7) = 1, then m can be represented by x(2) + 14y(2) + 28z(2) + 14yz. The same is true for 2x(2) + 4y(2) + 49z(2) + 2xy, provided that m is not square. If we assume further that m = 1 (mod 4) with (m/7) = 1 is not square, then m can be represented by 8x(2) + 8y(2) + 9z(2) + 8yz + 8xz + 2xy and 2x(2) + 7y(2) + 25z(2) + 2xz. Note that the genus of x(2) + 7y(2) + 49z(2) consists of exactly the above appeared five ternary quadratic forms.

Abstract:A number field $k$ admits a binary integral quadratic form which represents all integers locally but not globally if and only if the class number of $k$ is bigger than one. In this case, there are only finitely many classes of such binary integral quadratic forms over $k$. A number field $k$ admits a ternary integral quadratic form which represents all integers locally but not globally if and only if the class number of $k$ is even. In this case, there are infinitely many classes of such ternary integral quadratic forms over $k$. An integral quadratic form over a number field $k$ with more than one variables represents all integers of $k$ over the ring of integers of a finite extension of $k$ if and only if this quadratic form represents $1$ over the ring of integers of a finite extension of $k$.

Abstract:Let $S \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ be finite. Is there a positive definite quadratic form that fails to represent only those elements in $S$? For $S = \emptyset$, this was solved (for classically integral forms) by the $15$-Theorem of Conway-Schneeberger in the early 1990s and (for all integral forms) by the $290$-Theorem of Bhargava-Hanke in the mid-2000s. In 1938 Halmos attempted to list all weighted sums of four squares that failed to represent $S=\{m\}$; of his $88$ candidates, he could provide complete justifications for all but one. In the same spirit, we ask, "for which $S = \{m, n\}$ does there exist a quadratic form excepting only the elements of $S$?" Extending the techniques of Bhargava and Hanke, we answer this question for quaternary forms. In the process, we prove what Halmos could not; namely, that $x^2+2y^2+7z^2+13w^2$ represents all positive integers except $5$. We develop new strategies to handle forms of higher dimensions, yielding an enumeration of and proofs for the $73$ possible pairs that a classically integral positive definite quadratic form may except.

Abstract:G.L. Watson \cite{watson1, watson2} introduced a set of transformations, called Watson transformations by most recent authors, in his study of the arithmetic of integral quadratic forms. These transformations change an integral quadratic form to another integral quadratic form with a smaller discriminants, but preserve many arithmetic properties at the same time. In this paper, we study the change of class numbers of positive definite ternary integral quadratic formula along a sequence of Watson transformations, thus providing a new and effective way to compute the class number of positive definite ternary integral quadratic forms. Explicit class number formulae for many genera of positive definite ternary integral quadratic forms are derived as illustrations of our method.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-degenerate integral ternary quadratic form and let $m_0\in\mathbb{Z}_{\neq 0}$. We study growth of rational points on the affine quadric $(F=m_0)$ and show that they are equidistributed in the adelic space off a finite place. This is closely related to Linnik's problem. Our approach is based on the $\delta$-variant of the Hardy--Littlewood circle method developed by Heath-Brown.

Abstract:We investigate generalized quadratic forms with values in the set of rational integers over quadratic fields. We characterize the real quadratic fields which admit a positive definite binary generalized form of this type representing every positive integer. We also show that there are only finitely many such fields where a ternary generalized form with these properties exists.

Abstract:In this article, the standard correspondence between the ideal class group of a quadratic number field and the equivalence classes of binary quadratic forms of given discriminant is generalized to any base number field of narrow class number one. The article contains an explicit description of the correspondence. In the case of totally negative discriminants, equivalent conditions are given for a binary quadratic form to be totally positive definite.

Abstract:We study an asymptotic formula for counting integral points over an equation defined by a non-degenerated indefinite integral ternary quadratic form $f$ representing a non-zero integer $a$ such that $-a\cdot det(f)$ is square over a number field. In particular, we prove that the finite part of this asymptotic formula is given by the product of local density times $1-p^{-1}$ over all finite primes $p$ over $\Bbb Z$.

Abstract:Let $f$ be a positive definite integral quadratic form in $d$ variables. In the present paper, we establish a direct link between the genus representation number of $f$ and the order of higher even $K$-groups of the ring of integers of real quadratic fields, provided $f$ is diagonal and $d \equiv 1 \mod 4$, by applying the Siegel mass formula. When $d=3$, we derive an explicit formula of $r_f(n)$ in terms of the class number of the corresponding imaginary quadratic field and the central algebraic values of $L$-functions of quadratic twists of elliptic curves, by exploring a theorem of Waldspurger. Moreover, by the $2$-divisibility results on the algebraic $L$-values of quadratic twist of elliptic curves, we obtain a lower bound for the $2$-adic valuation of $r_f(n)$ for some odd integer $n$. The numerical results show our lower bound is optimal for certain cases. We also apply our main result to the quadratic form $f=x_1^2+\cdots+x^2_d$ to determine the order of the higher $K$-groups numerically.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak o$ be the ring of integers of a totally real number field. If $f$ is a quadratic form over $\mathfrak o$ and $g$ is another quadratic form over $\mathfrak o$ which represents all proper subforms of $f$, does $g$ represent $f$? We show that if $g$ is indefinite, then $g$ indeed represents $f$. However, when $f$ is positive definite and indecomposable, then there exists a $g$ which represents all proper subforms of $f$ but not $f$ itself. Along the way we give a new characterization of positive definite decomposable quadratic forms over $\mathfrak o$ and a number-field generalization of the finiteness theorem of representations of quadratic forms by quadratic forms over $\mathbb Z$ which asserts that given any infinite set $\mathscr S$ of classes of positive definite integral quadratic forms over $\mathfrak o$ of a fixed rank, there exists a finite subset $\mathscr S_0$ of $\mathscr S$ with the property that a positive definite quadratic form over $\mathfrak o$ represents all classes in $\mathscr S$ if and only if it represents all classes in $\mathscr S_0$.

Abstract:Let f be a positive definite integral ternary quadratic form and $\theta (z;f)=\sum _{n=0}^{\infty }a(n;f)q^n$ its theta function. For any fixed square-free positive integer t with $a(t;f)\ne 0$, we define $\rho (n;t,f):=a(tn^2;f)/a(t;f)$. For the case when $f=x_1^2+x_2^2+x_3^2$ and $t=1$, Hurwitz proved that $\rho (n;t,f)$ is multiplicative and he gave its expression. Cooper and Lam proved four similar formulas and proposed a conjecture for some other cases. Using the results given in this paper, we can check the multiplicative property of $\rho (n;t,f)$ for many cases. All cases in Cooper and Lam’s conjecture are included in ours.
Coprime-Universal Quadratic Forms

Abstract:Given a prime $p>3$, we characterize positive-definite integral quadratic forms that are coprime-universal for $p$, i.e. representing all positive integers coprime to $p$. This generalizes the $290$-Theorem by Bhargava and Hanke and extends later works by Rouse ($p=2$) and De Benedetto and Rouse ($p=3$). When $p=5,23,29,31$, our results are conditional on the coprime-universality of specific ternary forms. We prove this assumption under GRH (for Dirichlet and modular $L$-functions), following a strategy introduced by Ono and Soundararajan, together with some more elementary techniques borrowed from Kaplansky and Bhargava. Finally, we discuss briefly the problem of representing all integers in an arithmetic progression.

The main tools used in this proof are Fermat's little theorem (over finite field extensions), the Mordell-Niven theorem (representation of some gaussians), and the generalized Euler-identity over finite field extensions.
