Abstract:The development of porous composite materials is of great significance for their potentially improved performance over those of individual components and extensive applications in separation, energy storage, and heterogeneous catalysis. Now mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with macroporous melamine foam (MF) have been integrated using a one-pot process, generating a series of MOF/MF composite materials with preserved crystallinity, hierarchical porosity, and increased stability over that of melamine foam. The MOF nanocrystals were threaded by the melamine foam networks, resembling a ball-and-stick model overall. The resulting MOF/MF composite materials were employed as an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the epoxidation of cholesteryl esters. Combining the advantages of interpenetrative mesoporous and macroporous structures, the MOF/melamine foam composite has higher dispersibility and more accessibility of catalytic sites, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance.

Abstract:Famous as emerging inorganic-organic hybrid materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-based composites have been displaying bright prospects in catalysis fields. It is desirable to develop highly efficient MOF-based catalysts with excellent activity, selectivity, and stability. The nanostructure of MOFs can bring dramatic effects on their inherent physical/chemical properties and the interaction with reaction substrates/intermediates. Therefore, it is applicable to promote the performance of MOF-based catalysts via nanostructure engineering. In this review, we focus on four classes of nanostructures, i.e., ultrathin nanostructure, hierarchically porous nanostructure, defective nanostructure, and MOF-shelled nanostructure (composite with MOF shell). Strategies for nanostructure engineering of MOF-based catalysts are summarized, their applications in thermo-catalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis are overviewed, and the effects of nanostructure engineering on catalytic performance are discussed. We hope this review will be instructive for researchers in the rational and controllable construction of MOF nanostructures for catalytic performance promotions.

Abstract:Noble metal catalysts excel in many applications due to their high chemical stability and unique plasmonic and catalytic properties. However, noble metals in the form of nanoparticles tend to aggregate easily and have high costs, which limit their actual applications. Developing catalysts with minimal noble metal usage and optimal activity is urgently needed. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are composed of organic ligands and metal ions/clusters via coordination bonds, which inherently possess structural diversity, high specific surface area, and other important properties. With the rapid development of MOFs and MOF-based composite materials, they have been used to design and synthesize nanostructures and nanomaterials with high catalytic activity. The preparation, characterization, and application of MOF-based composite materials combining noble metals have attracted significant interest. Incorporation of noble metal nanoparticles into MOF structures is an effective method to eliminate the agglomeration problems of noble metals and the instability of MOFs. By utilization of the synergistic effects and properties of metal nanoparticles and MOFs, composite materials exhibit enhanced catalytic performance over each component. This review focuses on the synthesis strategies and catalytic performance studies of noble metal catalysts supported on MOFs.

Abstract:Co-based metal–organic framework (MOF), a kind of porous crystal material composed of Co ions and organic linkers, is a common type of MOF. It not only has the intrinsic properties of MOF, such as structural diversity, functional adjustability, and high surface area, but more importantly, it contains Co metal species, which are considered by many reports to be active catalytic centers for many reactions. Meanwhile, metal catalysts always received wide and sustained attention. The combination of the two types of catalysts can enhance the catalytic performance and achieve the "1 + 1 > 2" effect. In this review, we mainly overview the synthesis methods of Co-based MOF-derived metal catalysts from nano- to atom- level and their applications in the catalysis field in recent years and put forward our own views and prospects for this research direction.

Abstract:Carbon-based nanomaterials have been widely used as catalysts or catalyst supports in the chemical industry or for energy or environmental applications due to their fascinating properties. High surface areas, tunable porosity, and functionalization are considered to be crucial to enhance the catalytic performance of carbon-based materials. Recently, the newly emerging metal organic frameworks (MOFs) built from metal ions and polyfunctional organic ligands have proved to be promising self-sacrificing templates and precursors for preparing various carbon-based nanomaterials, benefiting from their high BET surface areas, abundant metal/organic species, large pore volumes, and extraordinary tunability of structures and compositions. In comparison with other carbon-based catalysts, MOF-derived carbon-based nanomaterials have great advantages in terms of tailorable morphologies and hierarchical porosity and easy functionalization with other heteroatoms and metal/metal oxides, which make them highly efficient as catalysts directly or as catalyst supports for numerous important reactions. In this perspective, we intend to give readers a survey of the research advances in the use of MOFs as self-sacrificing templates and precursors to prepare carbon-based nanomaterials, mainly including heteroatom-doped porous carbons and metal/metal oxide decorated porous carbons for applications as catalysts in energy and environment-related electrocatalysis and traditional heterogeneous catalysis. Finally, some perspectives are provided for future developments and directions of MOF-derived carbon-based materials for catalysis.

Abstract:The application scope of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be extended by rationally designing the architecture and components of MOFs, which can be achieved via a metal-containing solid templated strategy. However, this strategy suffers from low efficiency and provides only one specific MOF from one template. Herein, we present a versatile templated strategy in which organic ligands are weaved into hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) for the controllable and scalable synthesis of MOF nanotubes. HOF nanowires assembled from benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid and melamine via a simple sonochemical approach serve as both the template and precursor to produce MOF nanotubes with varied metal compositions. Hybrid nanotubes containing nanometal crystals and N-doped graphene prepared through a carbonization process show that the optimized NiRuIr alloy@NG nanotube exhibits excellent electrocatalytic HER activity and durability in alkaline media, outperforming most reported catalysts. The strategy proposed here demonstrates a pioneering study of combination of HOF and MOF, which shows great potential in the design of other nanosized MOFs with various architectures and compositions for potential applications.

Abstract:<p>Metal-organic framework nanosheets (MONs) as the emerging materials have been attracting great interest because the nanosheets possess a range of fascinating attributes including high surface areas and sufficient accessible active sites, and their nanoscale thicknesses are favorable for mass diffusion and transfer of substrates and products with respect to bulk metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This review first summarizes the synthetic methods of various MONs from top-down and bottom-up methods as well as their diverse composites with different components. Then, the catalytic applications of MON based nanocatalysts are discussed and the relationships among the composition, structure and catalytic performances are revealed. Finally, the challenges and future outlook about the synthesis of diverse MONs and their composites for heterogeneous catalysis are prospected.</p>

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) supported metal nanoparticles (MNPs) (MNPs@MOFs) composites, as a class of effective functional materials, have been extensively explored because of the synergetic effect of MOFs and MNPs. Lots of synthesized methods are developed to synthesize MNPs@MOFs composites. These strategies can be generally divided into four main synthesis strategies: ship‐in‐the‐bottle, bottle‐around‐the‐ship, one‐pot, and sandwich assembly approaches. In this review, the recent synthesized strategies are discussed and summarized for the design and fabrication of different MNPs@MOFs composites. Then, the catalytic applications of some MNPs@MOFs composites are presented. Lastly, the challenges and future perspectives are also pointed out in this hot research filed.

Abstract:Nanoparticle/metal-organic frameworks (MOF) based composites have recently attracted significant attention as a new class of catalysts. Such composites possess the unique features of MOFs (including clearly defined crystal structure, high surface area, single site catalyst, special confined nanopore, tunable, and uniform pore structure), but avoid some intrinsic weaknesses (like limited electrical conductivity and lack in the "conventional" catalytically active sites). This review summarizes the developed strategies for the fabrication of nanoparticle/MOF composites for catalyst uses, including the strategy using MOFs as host materials to hold and stabilize the guest nanoparticles, the strategy with subsequent MOF growth/assembly around pre-synthesized nanoparticles and the strategy mixing the precursors of NPs and MOFs together, followed by self-assembly process or post-treatment or post-modification. The applications of nanoparticle/MOF composites for CO oxidation, CO₂ conversion, hydrogen production, organic transformations, and degradation of pollutants have been discussed. Superior catalytic performances in these reactions have been demonstrated. Challenges and future developments are finally addressed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a new stable class of hybrid materials synthesized, regulated and decorated by rational incorporating organic bridging ligands and metal ions with well-defined coordination geometry have become promising candidates for heterogeneous catalysis in industrial applications. Compared with homogeneous catalysts, MOF catalysts can be easily recycled and reused for several times; while compared with traditional heterogeneous catalysts, they possess tunable size and catalytic centers via exchange or modification of their components. This review will sketch typical successful MOF-catalyzed reactions and summarize various catalytic centers, including the open metal sites, bifunctional acid-base sites in MOFs, as well as catalytic centers introduced to MOFs via PSM. The periodic order and site isolation of the catalytic struts in MOFs eliminate the multimolecular catalyst deactivation pathways to extend the catalytic centers' functional lifetime and facilitate the studies of their activities and reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, detailed discussion on how the catalytic centers play the roles in the catalytic reactions and how to control the activity and selectivity of them will be given via typical reported examples. Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), constructed by metal ions/clusters and organic linkers, featuring crystalline porous structures, have been intensively employed as templates/precursors for the synthesis of diverse porous materials including porous carbons, metal-based compounds (such as metal oxides/carbides/phosphides) and their composites. The large surface area, high porosity and excellent tailorability of MOFs can be well inherited to their derivatives, making MOF-derived porous materials very promising for catalytic applications. Herein, we systematically summarize the versatile synthetic strategies to fabricate MOF-derived porous materials and give an overview on their recent progress on organic heterogeneous catalysis, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. Abstract:Composites incorporating metal nanoparticles (MNPs) within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have broad applications in many fields. However, the controlled spatial distribution of the MNPs within MOFs remains a challenge for addressing key issues in catalysis, for example, the efficiency of catalysts due to the limitation of molecular diffusion within MOF channels. Here we report a facile strategy that enables MNPs to be encapsulated into MOFs with controllable spatial localization by using metal oxide both as support to load MNPs and as a sacrificial template to grow MOFs. This strategy is versatile to a variety of MNPs and MOF crystals. By localizing the encapsulated MNPs closer to the surface of MOFs, the resultant MNPs@MOF composites not only exhibit effective selectivity derived from MOF cavities, but also enhanced catalytic activity due to the spatial regulation of MNPs as close as possible to the MOF surface.

Abstract:Porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are built from periodically alternate organic moieties and metal ions/ clusters. The unique features of the open framework structures, the high surface areas, the permanent porosity, and the appropriate hydrophilic and hydrophobic pore nature mean that MOF materials are a class of ideal host matrices for immobilization of molecular catalysts. The emerging porous materials can not only retain but are also able to enhance the catalytic functions of the single individuals. MOF catalysts have the following super characters: i) uniformly dispersed catalytic sites on the pore surfaces to improve the utility, ii) appropriate hydrophilic and hydrophobic pore nature to facilitate the recognition and transportation of reactant and product molecules, iii) a collaborative microenvironment to realize synergistic catalysis, and iv) simple separation and recovery for long-term usage. Accompanying the development of the synthetic strategies and the technologies for the characterization of MOF materials, MOF catalysis has undergone an upsurge, which has transcended the stage of opportunism. Here, the rational design and synthesis of MOF catalysts are discussed, along with the key factors of active sites, microenvironments, and transmission channels that lead to the distinct catalytic properties of MOF catalysts.
Synthesizing MOF-derived NiNC catalyst via surfactant modified strategy for efficient electrocatalytic CO2 to CO

Abstract:Recently, Ni, N-doped carbon (NiNC) electrocatalysts synthesized using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as templates have demonstrated attractive catalytic performances in the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, most of the reported preparations of MOFs-based precursors are carried out in organic solvents, and the resulting NiNC materials have relatively low metal loadings and mainly exhibit microporous structures, which is unfavorable for the mass transport. Herein, Ni, N-doped meso-microporous carbon electrocatalysts with a range of Ni loadings (M-NiNCx/CNTs) were prepared by the pyrolysis of MOFs-based precursors synthesized in aqueous solution using the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a modifier to promote the adsorption of Ni2+ ions and the formation of mesopores. Owing to the unique morphology, porous structure and high contents of Ni-Nx sites and pyrrolic-N, the optimal catalyst (M-NiNC2/CNTs) shows superior electrocatalytic activity for the CO2RR with a maximum CO Faradaic efficiency (FECO) of 98 % at -0.7 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), and the FECO can reach over 80 % in a wide potential range of -0.5 to -1.0 V vs. RHE. This work develops a facile and environmentally friendly strategy to obtain high-performance and low-cost transition metal-nitrogen-doped porous carbon electrocatalysts for the CO2RR.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of distinctive porous crystalline materials constructed by metal ions/clusters and organic linkers. Owing to their structural diversity, functional adjustability, and high surface area, different types of MOF-based single metal sites are well exploited, including coordinately unsaturated metal sites from metal nodes and metallolinkers, as well as active metal species immobilized to MOFs. Furthermore, controllable thermal transformation of MOFs can upgrade them to nanomaterials functionalized with active single-atom catalysts (SACs). These unique features of MOFs and their derivatives enable them to serve as a highly versatile platform for catalysis, which has actually been becoming a rapidly developing interdisciplinary research area. In this review, we overview the recent developments of catalysis at single metal sites in MOF-based materials with emphasis on their structures and applications for thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis. We also compare the results and summarize the major insights gained from the works in this review, providing the challenges and prospects in this emerging field.

Abstract:Incorporating metal nanoparticles (MNPs) inside metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) demonstrates superior catalytic properties in numerous reactions; however, the size and distribution of MNPs could not be well controlled, resulting in low product selectivity in catalysis by undergoing different catalytic reaction pathways. We report herein a facile strategy for integrating lattice-mismatched MOFs together to fabricate homogeneously distributed “dual-MOFs,” which are the ideal precursors for the preparation of MNPs@MOFs with unique catalytic properties. As a proof of concept, we successfully synthesize a dual-MOF HKUST-1/ZIF-8 for in situ creation of redox-active Cu NPs inside hierarchical porous ZIF-8 under controlled pyrolytic conditions. Combining the advantages of size-tunable Cu NPs in the molecular sieving matrix of ZIF-8, Cu@ZIF-8 demonstrates high activity and selectivity for transformation of alkynes into alkenes without overhydrogenation, which surpasses most of the catalysts in the literature. Therefore, this work paves a new pathway for developing highly efficient and selective heterogeneous catalysts to produce highly value-added chemicals.

Abstract:The development of metal organic frameworks (MOFs)-based composites is a research topic of high importance because these composites have great potential for wide utilization in energy transfer and environment protection. Herein, a series of CuS@NOTT-101 composites have been successfully fabricated through a convenient MOFs-templated in situ vulcanization strategy. Highly dispersed ultrafine CuS particles evenly embedded on the surface or within the pore structure of the resulting composite frameworks, which is beneficial for introducing hierarchical architecture and exclusive active sites. Remarkably, the optimal composite possesses the highest adsorption capacity of 500 mg g(-1) for RhB 6G at a low concentration (30 mg/L) among the previously reported MOFs/MOF-based composites and reveals an outstanding performance toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with a small Tafel slope of 78 mV dec(-1) as well as good cycling stability over 100 h. Given the established structural and compositional designability of MOFs, these results herald the appearance of multifunctional composites whose location of active sites and hierarchical structure are precisely controlled, at the microscale level.

Abstract:Co3O4 nanoparticles were prepared from cobalt nitrate that was accommodated in the pores of a metal-organic framework (MOF) ZIF-8 (Zn(MeIM)2, MeIM=2-methylimidazole) by using a simple liquid-phase method. The ZIF-8 host was removed by pyrolysis under air and subsequently washing with an NH4Cl–NH3·H2O aqueous solution. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis shows that the obtained Co3O4 is composed of separate nanoparticles with a mean size of 18nm. The Co3O4 nanoparticles exhibit excellent catalytic activity, cycling stability, and long-term stability in the low temperature CO oxidation.

Abstract:Evaluating the catalytic influence of metal sites on derivates obtained from the calcination of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is very important for the rational construction of novel MOFs. Based on this catalytic functional guidance, two new Co-MOF and CoNi-MOF crystals were designed and synthesized, and further pyrolyzed to obtain corresponding porous carbon-based catalysts. Interestingly, the derivates exhibited better catalytic performance toward the tandem reaction of dehydrogenation of NH3BH3 and subsequent hydrogenation reduction of nitro/olefin compounds than those of the CoNi-ZIF (a star MOF)-derived CoNi@carbon and most metal catalysts. Significantly, the CoNi@C maintained excellent activity, even after 30 cycles, demonstrating its great longevity and durability, which are especially important for the practical application of metal catalysts in industrial catalysis.
