Abstract:Weyl points, as a signature of 3D topological states, have been extensively studied in condensed matter systems. Recently, the physics of Weyl points has also been explored in electromagnetic structures such as photonic crystals and metamaterials. These structures typically have complex three-dimensional geometries, which limits the potential for exploring Weyl point physics in on-chip integrated systems. Here we show that Weyl point physics emerges in a system of two-dimensional arrays of resonators undergoing dynamic modulation of refractive index. In addition, the phase of modulation can be controlled to explore Weyl points under different symmetries. Furthermore, unlike static structures, in this system the non-trivial topology of the Weyl point manifests in terms of surface state arcs in the synthetic space that exhibit one-way frequency conversion. Our system therefore provides a versatile platform to explore and exploit Weyl point physics on chip.

Generation of Weyl Points in Coupled Optical Microdisk-Resonator Arrays Via External Modulation

Abstract:We theoretically propose a scheme to produce Weyl points in two-dimensional (2D) optical microdisk-resonator arrays, which undergo a dynamical modulation with temporal periodicity. By mapping the set of modes supported by each resonator to a synthetic frequency dimension, the 2D lattice is equivalent to a three-dimensional (3D) time-independent lattice. We show that, by breaking the inversion symmetry (I symmetry) or introducing artificial gauge fields, Weyl points can be formed, leading to anomalous topological edge states and Fermi arcs. This approach may provide a way to design robust topological photonic devices on chips and future applications for integrated photonics.

Abstract:The massless solutions to the Dirac equation are described by the so-called Weyl Hamiltonian. The Weyl equation requires a particle to have linear dispersion in all three dimensions while being doubly degenerate at a single momentum point. These Weyl points are topological monopoles of quantized Berry flux exhibiting numerous unusual properties. We performed angle-resolved microwave transmission measurements through a double-gyroid photonic crystal with inversion-breaking where Weyl points have been theoretically predicted to occur. The excited bulk states show two linear dispersion bands touching at four isolated points in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone, indicating the observation of Weyl points. This work paves the way to a variety of photonic topological phenomena in three dimensions.
Observation of Weyl point pair annihilation in a gyromagnetic photonic crystal

Abstract: Weyl semimetals are gapless three-dimensional (3D) phases whose bandstructures contain Weyl point (WP) degeneracies. WPs carry topological charge and can only be eliminated by mutual annihilation, a process that generates the various topologically distinct 3D insulators. Time reversal (T) symmetric Weyl phases, containing a minimum of four WPs, have been extensively studied in real materials, photonic metamaterials, and other systems. Weyl phases with a single WP pair - the simplest configuration of WPs - are more elusive as they require T-breaking. Here, we implement a microwave-scale gyromagnetic 3D photonic crystal, and use field-mapping experiments to track a single pair of ideal WPs whose momentum space locations depend strongly on the biasing magnetic field. By continuously varying the field strength, we observe the annihilation of the WPs, and the formation of a 3D Chern insulator, a previously unrealised member of the family of 3D topological insulators (TIs). Surface measurements show, in unprecedented detail, how the Fermi arc states connecting the WPs evolve into TI surface states.

Abstract:Here, we propose the construction of acoustic Weyl semimetals in synthetic dimensions based on a 2D coupling waveguide array under external dynamic modulations. The type-I, type-II, and line node acoustic Weyl semimetals can be realized in one lattice array and the associated transitions between different phases can be implemented by flexibly adjusting the dynamic modulations. The correspondence between different phases and symmetries is analyzed. The results clearly show that the spectra of topological surface states undergo bidirectional or unidirectional shifts in the frequency domain according to the type of Weyl points. Our work opens the door for studying acoustic Weyl physics in the synthetic dimensions and may have impacts on acoustic wave manipulation in both spatial and frequency domains. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.21.054048 © 2024 American Physical Society

Topological Photonic Crystal with Equifrequency Weyl Points

Abstract:Weyl points in three-dimensional photonic crystals behave as monopoles of Berry flux in momentum space. Here, based on general symmetry analysis, we show that a minimal number of four symmetry-related (consequently equifrequency) Weyl points can be realized in time-reversal invariant photonic crystals. We further propose an experimentally-feasible way to modify double-gyroid photonic crystals to realize four equifrequency Weyl points, which is explicitly confirmed by our first-principle photonic band-structure calculations. Remarkably, photonic crystals with equifrequency Weyl points are qualitatively advantageous in applications including angular selectivity, frequency selectivity, invisibility cloaking, and three dimensional imaging.

Abstract:We propose to realize type-II Weyl points in a one-dimensional Aubry–Andre–Harper model with cosine modulation in both hopping and on-site terms, which together form a synthetic three-dimensional parameter space. By constructing a one-dimensional acoustic lattice comprising multiple coupled cavities with two adjustable structural parameters, we implement the acoustical analogue of the type-II Weyl semimetal. Good agreement is observed between the theoretical predictions and numerical simulations, with both displaying the tilted dispersion and Fermi arc. Our study enables the exploration of high-dimensional topological physics by constructing a low-dimensional physical system and may open up possibilities for the design of novel acoustic devices.

Abstract:Weyl points (WPs), as the doubly degenerate points in three-dimensional momentum band structures, carry quantized topological charges and give rise to a variety of extraordinary properties, such as robust surface wave and chiral anomaly. Type-II Weyl semimetals, which have conical dispersions in Fermi surfaces and a strongly tilted dispersion with respect to type I, have recently been proposed in condensed-matter systems and photonics. Although the type-II WPs have been theoretically predicted in acoustics, the experimental realization in phononic crystals has not been reported so far. Here, we experimentally realize a type-II Weyl phononic crystal. We demonstrate the topological transitions observed at the WP frequencies and the topological surface acoustic waves between the Weyl frequencies. The experiment results are in good accordance with our theoretical analyses. Due to the violation of the Lorentz symmetry, the type-II WPs only exist in low energy systems. As the analog counterpart in classical waves, the phononic crystal brings a platform for the research of type-II WPs in macroscopic systems.

Abstract:Weyl points emerge as topological monopoles of Berry flux in the three-dimensional (3D) momentum space and have been extensively studied in topological semimetals. As the underlying topological principles apply to any type of waves under periodic boundary conditions, Weyl points can also be realized in classical wave systems, which are easier to engineer compared to condensed matter materials. Here, we made an acoustic Weyl phononic crystal by breaking space inversion (P) symmetry using a combination of slanted acoustic waveguides. We conducted angle-resolved transmission measurements to characterize the acoustic Weyl points. We also experimentally confirmed the existence of acoustic "Fermi arcs" and demonstrated robust one-way acoustic transport, where the surface waves can overcome a step barrier without reflection. This work lays a solid foundation for the basic research in 3D topological acoustic effects.

Optical Interface States Protected by Synthetic Weyl Points

Abstract:Weyl fermions have not been found in nature as elementary particles, but they emerge as nodal points in the band structure of electronic and classical wave crystals. Novel phenomena such as Fermi arcs and chiral anomaly have fueled the interest in these topological points which are frequently perceived as monopoles in momentum space. Here we report the experimental observation of generalized optical Weyl points inside the parameter space of a photonic crystal with a specially designed four-layer unit cell. The reflection at the surface of a truncated photonic crystal exhibits phase vortexes due to the synthetic Weyl points, which in turn guarantees the existence of interface states between photonic crystals and any reflecting substrates. The reflection phase vortexes have been confirmed for the first time in our experiments which serve as an experimental signature of the generalized Weyl points. The existence of these interface states is protected by the topological properties of the Weyl points and the trajectories of these states in the parameter space resembles those of Weyl semimetal "Fermi arcs surface states" in momentum space. Tracing the origin of interface states to the topological character of the parameter space paves the way for a rational design of strongly localized states with enhanced local field.

Abstract:Weyl fermions are hypothetical two-component massless relativistic particles in three-dimensional (3D) space, proposed by Hermann Weyl in 1929. Their band-crossing points, called 'Weyl points,' carry a topological charge and are therefore highly robust. There has been much excitement over recent observations of Weyl points in microwave photonic crystals and the semimetal TaAs. Here, we report on the first experimental observation of Weyl points of light at optical frequencies. These are also the first observations of 'type-II' Weyl points for photons, which have strictly positive group velocity along one spatial direction. We use a 3D structure consisting of laser-written waveguides, and show the presence of type-II Weyl points by (1) observing conical diffraction along one axis when the frequency is tuned to the Weyl point; and (2) observing the associated Fermi arc surface states. The realization of Weyl points at optical frequencies allow these novel electromagnetic modes to be further explored in the context of linear, nonlinear, and quantum optics.

Abstract:At photonic Dirac points, electromagnetic waves are governed by the same equations as two-component massless relativistic fermions. However, photonic Dirac points are known to occur in pairs in "photonic graphene" and other similar photonic crystals, which necessitates special precautions to excite only one valley state. Systems hosting unpaired photonic Dirac points are significantly harder to realize, as they require broken time-reversal symmetry. Here, we report on the observation of an unpaired Dirac point in a planar two-dimensional photonic crystal. The structure incorporates gyromagnetic materials, which break time-reversal symmetry; the unpaired Dirac point occurs when a parity-breaking parameter is fine-tuned to a topological transition between a photonic Chern insulator and a conventional photonic insulator phase. Evidence for the unpaired Dirac point is provided by transmission and field-mapping experiments, including a demonstration of strongly non-reciprocal reflection. This unpaired Dirac point may have applications in valley filters and angular selective photonic devices.

Abstract:Photonic structures with Weyl points (WPs), including type I and type II, promise nontrivial surface modes and intriguing light manipulations for their three-dimensional topological bands. While previous studies mainly focus on exploring WPs in a uniform Weyl structure, here we establish Weyl heterostructures (i.e., a nonuniform Weyl lattice) with different rotational orientations in the synthetic dimension by nanostructured photonic waveguides. In this work, we unveil a transition between bound and extended modes on the interface of type-II Weyl heterostructures by tuning their rotational phases, despite the reversed topological order across the interface. This mode transition is also manifested from the total transmission to total reflection at the interface. All of these unconventional effects are attributed to the tilted dispersion of type-II Weyl band structure that can lead to mismatched bands and gaps across the interface. As a comparison, the type-I Weyl heterostructures lack the phase transition due to the untilted band structure. This work establishes a flexible scheme of artificial Weyl heterostructures that opens a new avenue toward high-dimensional topological effects and significantly enhances our capabilities in on-chip light manipulations. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.143801 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Weyl points, as linearly double degenerated point of band structures, have been extensively researched in electronic and classical wave systems. However, Weyl points' realization is always accompanied with delicate "lattice structures". In this work, frequency-tunable terahertz (THz) generalized Weyl points inside the parameter space have been investigated and displayed by a specially designed photonic crystal with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) immersed in 4-cyano'-pentylbipenyl (5CB) liquid crystals (LCs). The reflective phase vortices as a signature of the generalized Weyl points are observed through our numerically simulations. Besides, interface states between photonic crystals and any reflective substrates are fulfilled too. Meanwhile, we could also change the orientation of LC molecule by the external magnetic field so as to tune the frequency of the first two bands' Weyl point from 0.27698THz to 0.30013THz. This band lies in the short-range wireless communication. Thus, our proposal may be beneficial to the investigation and application of Weyl points' properties and strongly localized states.

Abstract:Weyl points-topological monopoles of quantized Berry flux-are predicted to spread to Weyl exceptional rings in the presence of non-Hermiticity. Here, we use a one-dimensional Aubry-Andre-Harper model to construct a Weyl semimetal in a three-dimensional parameter space comprising one reciprocal dimension and two synthetic dimensions. The inclusion of non-Hermiticity in the form of gain and loss produces a synthetic Weyl exceptional ring (SWER). The topology of the SWER is characterized by both its topological charge and non-Hermitian winding numbers. We experimentally observe the SWER and synthetic Fermi arc in a one-dimensional phononic crystal with the non-Hermiticity introduced by active acoustic components. Our findings pave the way for studying the high-dimensional non-Hermitian topological physics in acoustics.

Abstract:Exploring photonic topology Scattering topological effects are being explored in a variety of electronic and optical materials systems owing to their robustness against defects (see the Perspective by Özdemir). Yang et al. designed and fabricated an ideal optical analog of a three-dimensional Weyl system. Angular transmission measurements revealed four Weyl points at the same energy, as well as the signature helicoidal arcs associated with such an exotic topological system. Zhou et al. theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated the formation of a topologically protected bulk Fermi arc. They attributed the formation of the arc to the topological nature of paired exceptional points (points at which gain and loss in the system are matched). Photonic crystals may provide a powerful platform for studying exotic properties of topological electronic systems and may also be used to develop optical devices that exploit topological properties of light-matter interactions. Abstract:We numerically demonstrate the creation of Weyl points in a twisted multilayer photonic system. In our system, each layer is anisotropic with plasmonic response along a direction perpendicular to the layer and with anisotropic dielectric response within the layer. We show that Weyl points can be created by controlling the twist angles between the layers so that spatial-inversion symmetry is broken. Compared with existing approaches, our findings offer a potentially simpler structure for creating Weyl points and highlight the prospect of using twisted multilayer systems for achieving topological photonic effects.
