Abstract:Quantum measurement using coherent superposition of intrinsic atomic states has the advantage of being absolute measurement and can form metrological standards. One example is the absolute measurement of magnetic field by monitoring the Larmor precession of atomic spins whilst another being the Ramsey type atomic clock. Yet, in almost all coherent quantum measurement, the precision is limited by the coherence time beyond which, the uncertainty decreases only as tau(-1/2). Here we show that by non-destructively measuring the phase of the Larmor precession and regenerating the coherence via optical pumping, the self-sustaining Larmor precession signal can persist indefinitely. Consequently, the precision of the magnetometer increases with time following a much faster tau(-1) rule. A mean sensitivity of 240fT/root Hz from 1 Hz to 10 Hz is realized, being close to the shot noise level. This method of coherence regeneration may also find important applications in improving the performance of atomic clocks.

Abstract:The magnetometer systems applied in active magnetic control pico-satellite is introduced.The method for maintaining the best performance in extreme environments is proposed.Meanwhile, we also focused on the effectiveness of digital filters based on PauTa rule and L'MAD rule.What's more, solutions are proposed to improve the relationship between the real-time requirement and sensitivity.We can keep ourselves informed of the magnetic-field value via direct measurement and offset-strap measurement. The output data of our system linearly fit the measured magnetic field values and milli-Gauss resolution is available.The whole system, with low power consumption, small size and high resolution, has a good engineering application foreground for it is applicable in pico-satellite, electronic compass and inertial navigation for missiles and so on.

Abstract:The spin self-sustaining atomic magnetometer has the advantage of 1/τ measurement and great development potential in many applications. In this paper, we investigated the main elements that affect the stability and accuracy of the self-sustaining magnetometer and proposed the methods to improve its performance based on the measurement results. The correlation coefficient between fluctuations of the magnetic field generated by coils and the spin Larmor precession frequency is 0.97, which mainly dominates the stability in a short term. The accuracy of the magnetometer is affected by the power and frequency of the pump light. The Larmor precession frequency coefficient related to the pump light power is 26 mHz/mW, and the effect on the Larmor precession frequency is minimized when the pump light frequency is red detuned by 200 MHz from the 85Rb transition D1 line F = 3 to F′ = 3. The 1/τ measurement time after these corrections can be extended to 10 s, and the sensitivity achieved is 149 fT/Hz, which is close to the quantum projection noise limit of the system.
An atomic magnetic gradiometer with 1/τ uncertainty property based on the self-sustaining method

Abstract:The magnetic field is one of the most important physical observables with about all electromagnetic information. Larmor precession atomic magnetometers based on optical pumping experienced considerable attention recently. However, the sensitivity of this kind of atomic magnetometers is limited by their spin coherence time and the systematic noise. Here, we propose a self-sustaining atomic magnetic gradiometer that shows a superior 1/tau behavior in the magnetic field uncertainty measurement over time. The gradiometer is implemented by mixing and filtering the different frequency signals from two adjacent spin self-sustaining magnetometers with a baseline equal to 1 cm. The common-mode noise is suppressed and a gradient sensitivity of 200 fT/(root Hz/cm) is realized, being close to the shot noise limit.
A Spin Self-Sustaining Atomic Magnetometer for High-Precision Measurements in Large Magnetic Fields

Abstract:Measurement of magnetic fields by monitoring the Larmor precession of atomic spins is commonly used nowadays because of the high sensitivity and absolute measurement. This paper proposes a novel atomic magnetometer based on the self-sustaining method for large and fluctuating magnetic fields. In combination with the indefinitely persist Larmor precession signal, the sensitivity of the magnetometer increases following a much faster tau(-1) rule beyond the atomic coherence lifetime. The maximum magnetic field have been experimentally demonstrated up to 40000 nT, the sensitivity achieved is 20 pT/root Hz and the frequency response bandwidth is 5 kHz, respectively. This magnetic field sensor is advantageous for applications requiring high sensitivity over a wide dynamic range such as geology and space physics.

Abstract:The absolute measurement of magnetic fields can be realized by monitoring the Larmor precession of atomic spins. Yet, this spin-precession magnetometer can only be put into use in weak magnetic fields and the sensitivity is limited by the coherence time beyond which, the uncertainty decreases as τ−1/2 rate. Now we demonstrate that the dynamic range of an atomic spin magnetometer can be extended to geomagnetic field magnitude with τ−1 property maintained based on the the self-sustaining method. A mean sensitivity of 20 pT/Hz and a frequency response bandwidth of 5 kHz are realized in a magnetic field of 10000 nT. More important applications in large magnetic fields can be enabled in virtue of the superiority using this self-sustaining magnetometer.

Abstract:The gyroscope based on atomic technology has the potential to provide the end user a high-performance device in a small package with low-power. Generally, the atomic gyroscope detects the rotation or angular rate of the object by measuring the Larmor precession frequency of spins. However, the precision is limited by the shorter coherence time caused by relaxation effects, and since the nuclear spin precession is often used in detection for atomic gyroscope, longer polarization time limits its application environment. Presented in this paper is a self-sustaining gyroscope based on electron spins. By non-destructively measuring the phase of the Larmor precession and regenerating the coherence via optical pumping, the Larmor precession can persist indefinitely, and the system can quickly regain polarization to environmental variations. Magnetic field measurement has been accomplished by using the self-sustaining technology. The precision of the magnetometer increases with time following a much faster tau(-1) rule rather than the traditional tau(-1/2) rule. The mean sensitivity is close to the shot noise in 300 ms, and the magnetometer has a quick response to sudden magnetic change. The self-sustaining technology can hopefully improve the measurement precision and the response time of the atomic gyroscope.

Abstract:A highly sensitive all-optical atomic magnetometer based on the magnetooptical effect which uses the advanced technique of single laser beam detection is reported and demonstrated experimentally. A sensitivity of 0.5 pT/Hz(1/2) is obtained by analyzing the magnetic noise spectrum, which exceeds that of most traditional magnetometers. This kind of atomic magnetometer is very compact, has a low power consumption, and has a high theoretical sensitivity limit, which make it suitable for many applications.

Abstract:High-sensitivity magnetometry is of critical importance to the fields of biomagnetism and geomagnetism. However, magnetometry for dc and low-frequency signal detection faces the challenge of sensitivity improvement, resulting from the low-frequency noise induced by multiple types of noise sources. In particular, for the solid-state spin dc quantum magnetometry, the sensitivity has been limited by short dephasing time. Here, we realized the conversion of the magnetic signal from dc to ac by utilizing a flux concentration and modulation (FCM) technique so that the dynamical decoupling method can be applied to prolong the dephasing time. Hence, we have successfully demonstrated a dc magnetometer with a sensitivity of 32 pT/Hz $^{{1}/{2}}$ , which is about two orders of magnitude over that of the Ramsey-type dc magnetometer. Further enhancement of the sensitivity is systematically analyzed, although is challenging but plenty of room is achievable. Our results shed light on the realization of room temperature dc quantum magnetometry with femtotesla-sensitivity in the future.

Abstract:The atomic magnetometer is currently one of the most-sensitive sensors and plays an important role in applications for detecting weak magnetic fields. This review reports the recent progress of total-field atomic magnetometers that are one important ramification of such magnetometers, which can reach the technical level for engineering applications. The alkali-metal magnetometers, helium magnetometers, and coherent population-trapping magnetometers are included in this review. Besides, the technology trend of atomic magnetometers was analyzed for the purpose of providing a certain reference for developing the technologies in such magnetometers and for exploring their applications.

Abstract:The Overhauser magnetometer is a scalar quantum magnetometer based on the dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) effect in the Earth’s magnetic field. Sensitivity is a key technical specification reflecting the ability of instruments to sense small variations of the Earth’s magnetic field and is closely related to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the free induction decay (FID) signal. In this study, deuterated 15N TEMPONE radical is used in our sensor to obtain high DNP enhancement. The measured SNR of the FID signal is approximately 63/1, and the transverse relaxation time T2 is 2.68 s. The direct measurement method with a single instrument and the synchronous measurement method with two instruments are discussed for sensitivity estimation in time and frequency domains under different electromagnetic interference (EMI) environments and different time periods. For the first time, the correlation coefficient of the magnetic field measured by the two instruments is used to judge the degree of the influence of the environmental noise on the sensitivity estimation. The sensitivity evaluation in the field environment is successfully realized without electrical and magnetic shields. The direct measurement method is susceptible to EMI and cannot work in general electromagnetic environments, except it is sufficiently quiet. The synchronous measurement method has an excellent ability to remove most natural and artificial EMIs and can be used under noisy environments. Direct and synchronous experimental results show that the estimated sensitivity of the JOM-4S magnetometer is approximately 0.01 nT in time domain and approximately 0.01 nT/Hz in frequency domain at a 3 s cycling time. This study provides a low-cost, simple, and effective sensitivity estimation method, which is especially suitable for developers and users to estimate the performance of the instrument.

Abstract:A magnetically-quiet environment is important for detecting faint magnetic-field signals or nonmagnetic spin-dependent interactions. Passive magnetic shielding using layers of large magnetic-permeability materials is widely used to reduce the magnetic-field noise. The magnetic-field noise can also be actively monitored with magnetometers and then compensated, acting as a complementary method to the passive shielding. We present here a general model to quantitatively depict and optimize the performance of active magnetic-field stabilization and experimentally verify our model using optically-pumped atomic magnetometers. We experimentally demonstrate a magnetic-field noise rejection ratio of larger than ∼800 at low frequencies and an environment with a magnetic-field noise floor of ∼40 fT/Hz1/2 in unshielded Earth’s field. The proposed model provides a general guidance on analyzing and improving the performance of active magnetic-field stabilization with magnetometers. This work offers the possibility of sensitive detections of magnetic-field signals in a variety of unshielded natural environments.

Abstract:We demonstrate an atomic magnetic gradiometer based on self-sustaining Larmor precession. By coherent optical pumping, we measure the phase of the Larmor precession directly and observe that the gradiometer shows a 1/τ improvement in magnetic field gradient uncertainty over time τ. Since the measurement gives frequency signals, the gradiometer can be easily implemented by mixing and filtering the different frequency signals from two adjacent magnetometers. A gradient sensitivity of 186 fT/Hz/cm-1) is realized, which is close to the shot-noise limit. In a noisy environment, the gradiometer can still maintain its 1/τ behavior by suppressing 90% of the common-mode noise. This method should be widely applicable to the measurement of magnetic field gradients owing to its simplicity and outstanding performance.

Abstract:As one of the basic characteristics of magnetic materials, magnetic field has attracted people's attention, and has been widely used in military, medicine, industry, and other field. The basic principles, development process, and application prospects of the high sensitivity micro-optical-atomic magnetometer arc sorted out. First, the working mechanism and system composition of the miniature optical-atomic magnetometer arc described. Second, the development processes of key technologies such as atomic gas cell fabrication and optimization methods, atomic gas cell heating methods, and magnetic field signal detection methods arc discussed. Finally, the latest research progress of the magnetometer is reviewed, and the application prospects of the miniature optical-atomic magnetometer arc prospected.
Real-Time Mitigation of Measurement Noise Arising from Geomagnetic Background Interferences for a Coil Vector Magnetometer.

Abstract:For the existing coil vector magnetometers, the negative effect of the geomagnetic background interference generated by solar activity has hardly been considered, making it difficult to further improve the solution precision for the magnetic direction. To address this issue, we propose a novel method of mitigating the measurement noise arising from the geomagnetic background interference. We combine the total field with the synchronous component data of the three-axis fluxgate magnetic sensor to correct the resultant field after applying a bias field in real time, and then propose a new measurement algorithm of magnetic inclination and declination to reduce noise. In theoretical evaluation, we model the measurement noise and then verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Moreover, we build a dedicated experimental platform to verify the practicality of the proposed method. Comparative observation results obtained in a nonmagnetic room of a geomagnetic observatory show that the proposed method significantly mitigates the measurement noise of the magnetic inclination and declination by 83% and 75%, respectively.
Pulsed Vector Atomic Magnetometer Using an Alternating Fast-Rotating Field

Abstract:We present a vector atomic magnetometer based on applying a fast-rotating magnetic field to a pulsed $^{87}$Rb scalar atomic magnetometer. This method enables simultaneous measurements of the total magnetic field and two polar angles relative to the plane of magnetic field rotation. Using two channels in a gradiometer mode, it provides simultaneous measurements of the total field gradient with a sensitivity of 35 $\mathrm{fT/\sqrt{Hz}}$ (0.7 part per billion), as well as two polar angles with resolutions of 6 $\mathrm{nrad/\sqrt{Hz}}$ at 50 $\mu$T Earth field strength. The noise spectrums of these measurements are flat down to 1 Hz and 0.1 Hz, respectively. Crucially, this approach avoids several metrological difficulties associated with vector magnetometers and gradiometers. We detail the fundamental, systematic, and practical limits of such vector magnetometers. Notably, we provide a comprehensive study of the systematic effects of vector atomic magnetometers. We introduce a new concept of dynamic heading error and investigate several other systematic effects. A unique peak-altering fast rotating field modulation is proposed to cancel out these systematics. Additionally, we derive fundamental limits on the sensitivity of such sensors and demonstrate that the vector sensitivity of the sensor can approach its scalar sensitivity while retaining the accuracy and metrological advantages of scalar sensors. This high-dynamic-range vector magnetometer, with ultrahigh resolution and inherent calibration, is suitable for a wide array of applications.

Abstract:Multifunctional magnetometers enable high-precision observations of the geomagnetic direction and total magnetic field, which have broad applications in geoscience research and space weather forecasting. However, inconsistencies still occur between the optical and magnetic axes of classic multifunctional magnetometers, and few studies have investigated their direct detection. To address this issue, we propose a novel method for the detection of the optical-magnetic axis inconsistency. The magnetic azimuths for the magnetic axis and the optical axis of the multifunctional magnetometer are determined through the bias field loading and fluxgate theodolite, thereby allowing direct detection of the inconsistency. The proposed method is also modeled to quantify the detection errors introduced by the total-field sensor and the observation operation. In addition, we develop a dedicated experimental platform and conduct comparative tests at a geomagnetic observatory to validate the practicality and performance of the method. The experimental results show that the proposed method can significantly reduce the deviation of the declination curve measured by the multifunctional magnetometer relative to the curve measured by the fluxgate theodolite from to , achieving a 99.5% reduction rate.

Abstract:The weak-value-amplification (WVA) effect, which is also called weak measurement, has been developed extensively in various sensing systems. Here, we report the actual realization of the WVA effect in spin-exchange relaxation-free atomic magnetometer system, wherein the slight separation of transverse momentum of the probe light is amplified by introducing orthogonal pre- and post-selection states. A differential detector is used to obtain the transverse position of the probe light accurately in real time. The weak coupling of the magneto-optical interaction with atoms will be reflected in the differential signal. The WVA effect is observed and demonstrated directly and a high sensitivity of 8 fT/Hz is achieved. Also, we obtain the stable and distinct simulated magnetocardiography signal through our system. The present successful implementation of this probe method paves the way for further technical noise suppression and sensitivity improvement of quantum sensors.
