Abstract:In this paper, based on the homotopy analysis method (HAM), a powerful algorithm is developed for the solution of nonlinear ordinary differential equations of fractional order. The proposed algorithm presents the procedure of constructing the set of base functions and gives the high-order deformation equation in a simple form. Different from all other analytic methods, it provides us with a simple way to adjust and control the convergence region of solution series by introducing an auxiliary parameter ℏ. The analysis is accompanied by numerical examples. The algorithm described in this paper is expected to be further employed to solve similar nonlinear problems in fractional calculus.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an iterative approach to increase the computation efficiency of the homotopy analysis method (HAM), a analytic technique for highly nonlinear problems. By means of the Schmidt–Gram process (Arfken et al., 1985) [15], we approximate the right-hand side terms of high-order linear sub-equations by a finite set of orthonormal bases. Based on this truncation technique, we introduce the Mth-order iterative HAM by using each Mth-order approximation as a new initial guess. It is found that the iterative HAM is much more efficient than the standard HAM without truncation, as illustrated by three nonlinear differential equations defined in an infinite domain as examples. This work might greatly improve the computational efficiency of the HAM and also the Mathematica package BVPh for nonlinear BVPs.

Abstract:In this paper, the basic ideas of a new analytic technique, namely the Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM), are described. Different from perturbation methods, the validity of the HAM is independent on whether or not there exist small parameters in considered nonlinear equations. Therefore, it provides us with a powerful analytic tool for strongly nonlinear problems. A typical nonlinear problem is used as an example to verify the validity and the great potential of the HAM.

Abstract:This paper introduces a discrete homotopy analysis method (DHAM) to obtain approximate solutions of linear or nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). The DHAM can take the many advantages of the continuous homotopy analysis method. The proposed DHAM also contains the auxiliary parameter ℏ, which provides a simple way to adjust and control the convergence region of solution series. The convergence of the DHAM is proved under some reasonable hypotheses, which provide the theoretical basis of the DHAM for solving nonlinear problems. Several examples, including a simple diffusion equation and two-dimensional Burgers’ equations, are given to investigate the features of the DHAM. The numerical results obtained by this method have been compared with the exact solutions. It is shown that they are in good agreement with each other.

Abstract:A modified wavelet interpolation Galerkin method (WIGM) with improved flexibility of nodal distribution is formulated and utilized to solve the Bratu's problem. Such a method treats the nonlinear term as an independent function and directly approximates it through the proposed wavelet interpolation, resulting in a low-cost discretization of the Bratu's equation with exponential nonlinearity. An efficient implementation of Newton's method to find the lower and upper branches of solution as well as the turning point is then presented. Numerical results demonstrate that the present WIGM can accurately estimate both two solution branches and turning point for the Bratu's problem. Compared with many other existing methods, the proposed WIGM also offers marked superiority in terms of accuracy when using the same node distribution. Moreover, a convergent solution to the resulting nonlinear discrete system obtained by the WIGM can be observed in a few iterations even when the initial guess significantly deviates from the exact solution. Finally, a highly accurate approximation of both two-branched solutions and the turning point for the two-dimensional Bratu's problem is obtained by the proposed WIGM.

Abstract:Abstract In this research work, we proposed a Haar wavelet collocation method (HWCM) for the numerical solution of first- and second-order nonlinear hyperbolic equations. The time derivative in the governing equations is approximated by a finite difference. The nonlinear hyperbolic equation is converted into its full algebraic form once the space derivatives are replaced by the finite Haar series. Convergence analysis is performed both in space and time, where the computational results follow the theoretical statements of convergence. Many test problems with different nonlinear terms are presented to verify the accuracy, capability, and convergence of the proposed method for the first- and second-order nonlinear hyperbolic equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new homotopy-wavelet approach to solve linear and nonlinear problems with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. The essence of this technique is to apply the homotopy analysis method (HAM) to transform the governing equations into a set of linear equations and employ the generalized Coiflet-type orthogonal wavelet to express and solve the resulting linear equations. The proposed technique is expected to keep the superiority of the HAM for handling nonlinearities, but with better computational efficiency. The nonhomogeneous boundary conditions including the mixed Dirichlet-Neumann and Robin conditions are reconstructed by introducing the Coiflets on the boundaries, which overcomes the deficiency of the close wavelet method that is difficult to handle the nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. Illustrative examples show very high efficiency of our proposed technique. Furthermore, the classic problem of the incompressible flow in a 2-D lid-driven cavity are investigated. By reconstructing the incompatible boundary conditions with the Coiflets, the singularities of velocity field on rigid points are successfully eliminated so that the vortex on the lid that is difficult to be obtained by previous approaches can be captured clearly. Abstract:To solve fractional partial differential equations (FPDEs) under various physical conditions, this study developed a novel method known as the Hermite wavelet method employing the functional integration matrix. The method that has been suggested is based on the Hermite wavelet collocation process. To determine the solution of the fractional differential equations, the Caputo fractional derivative operator of order is used. With the use of appropriate grid points, this method converts FPDEs into a system of nonlinear algebraic equations. We achieve a solution by solving these nonlinear algebraic equations by the Newton–Raphson method. Tables and graphs show that the suggested method produces superior results. We provide various illustrative examples to establish the effectiveness of the suggested concept, and the outcomes support the applicability of the suggested strategy. Obtained results are numerically expressed in terms of absolute errors. Finally, convergence analyses are discussed as some theorem with proof.

Abstract:Based on the Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM), an analytic approach is proposed to solve physical models with an infinite number of “singularities”. The nonlinear interaction of double cnoidal waves governed by the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation is used to illustrate its validity. The HAM is an analytic technique for highly nonlinear problems, which is based on the homotopy in topology and thus has nothing to do with small physical parameters. Besides, the HAM provides us great freedom to choose proper equation-type and solution-expression for high-order approximation equations. Especially, unlike other methods, the HAM can guarantee the convergence of solution series. Using the HAM, an infinite number of zero denominators of the considered problem are avoided once for all by properly choosing an auxiliary linear operator, as illustrated in this paper. This HAM-based approach has general meanings and can be used to solve many physical problems with lots of “singularities”. It also suggests that the so-called “singularity” might not exist physically, but only due to the imperfection of used mathematical methods, because the nature should not contain any singularities at all.

Abstract:We develop an approximation scheme for a function defined on a bounded interval by combining techniques of boundary extension and Coiflet-type wavelet expansion. Such a modified wavelet approximation allows each expansion coefficient being explicitly expressed by a single-point sampling of the function, and allows boundary values and derivatives of the bounded function to be embedded in the modified wavelet basis. By incorporating this approximation scheme into the conventional Galerkin method, the interpolating property makes the solution of boundary value problems with strong nonlinearity to be very effective and accurate. As an example, we have applied the proposed method to the solution of the Bratu-type equations. Results demonstrate a much better accuracy than most methods developed so far. Interestingly, unlike most existing methods, numerical errors of the present solutions are not sensitive to the nonlinear intensity of the equations.

Abstract:The Coiflet wavelet-homotopy Galerkin method is extended to solve un-steady nonlinear wave equations for the first time. The Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, the Burgers equation and the Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers (KdVB) equation are examined as illustrative examples. Validity and accuracy of the proposed method are assessed in terms of relative variance and the maximum error norm. Our results are found in good agreement with exact solutions and numerical solutions reported in previous studies. Furthermore, it is found that the solution accuracy is closely related to the resolution level and the convergence-control parameter. It is also found that our proposed method is superior to the traditional homotopy analysis method when deal-ing with unsteady nonlinear problems. It is expected that this approach can be further used to solve complicated unsteady problems in the fields of science and engineering.

Abstract:In this paper, a one-step optimal approach is proposed to improve the computational efficiency of the homotopy analysis method (HAM) for nonlinear problems. A generalized homotopy equation is first expressed by means of a unknown embedding function in Taylor series, whose coefficient is then determined one by one by minimizing the square residual error of the governing equation. Since at each order of approximation, only one algebraic equation with one unknown variable is solved, the computational efficiency is significantly improved, especially for high-order approximations. Some examples are used to illustrate the validity of this one-step optimal approach, which indicate that convergent series solution can be obtained by the optimal homotopy analysis method with much less CPU time. Using this one-step optimal approach, the homotopy analysis method might be applied to solve rather complicated differential equations with strong nonlinearity.

Abstract:In this paper, two types of fractional nonlinear equations in Caputo sense, time fractional Newell-Whitehead equation (FNWE) and time fractional generalized Hirota-Satsuma coupled KdV system (HS-cKdVS), are investigated by means of q-homotopy analysis method (q-HAM). The approximate solutions of proposed equations are constructed in the form of convergent series and are compared with the corresponding exact solutions. Due to the presence of the auxiliary parameter h in this method, just few terms of the series solution are required in order to obtain better approximation. For the sake of the visualization, the numerical results obtained in this paper are graphically displayed with the help of Maple.

Abstract:In this paper, an analytic approximation method for highly nonlinear equations, namely the homotopy analysis method (HAM), is employed to solve some backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) and forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs), including one with high dimensionality (up to 12 dimensions). By means of the HAM, convergent series solutions can be quickly obtained with high accuracy for a FBSDE in a 6-dimensional case, within less than 1 % CPU time used by a currently reported numerical method for the same case [34]. Especially, as dimensionality enlarges, the increase of computational complexity for the HAM is not as dramatic as this numerical method. All of these demonstrate the validity and high efficiency of the HAM for the backward/forward-backward stochastic differential equations in science, engineering, and finance.

Abstract:In this paper, the Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) proposed by Liao (1992a, 1992b, 1992c, 1992e, 1995a, 1997a) is greatly improved by introducing a nonzero variable ℏ. Based on the HAM, a new numerical approach for strongly non-linear problems is proposed and applied to solve, as an example, a non-linear heat transfer problem, i.e. microwave heating of an unit plate, so as to verify its validity and great potential. Our numerical experiments show that, by the proposed approach, iteration is not absolutely necessary for solving non-linear problems. This fact may deepen our understanding about numerical techniques for non-linear problems and widen our field of vision. Moreover, the basic ideas proposed in this paper may afford us a great possibility to greatly improve our current numerical techniques.

Abstract:We present an algorithm for constructing numerical solutions to one-dimensional nonlinear, variable coefficient boundary value problems. This scheme is based upon applying the Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) to decompose a nonlinear differential equation into a series of linear differential equations that can be solved using a sparse, spectrally accurate Gegenbauer discretisation. Uniquely for nonlinear methods, our scheme involves constructing a single, sparse matrix operator that is repeatedly solved in order to solve the full nonlinear problem. As such, the resulting scheme scales quasi-linearly with respect to the grid resolution. We demonstrate the accuracy, and computational scaling of this method by examining a fourth-order nonlinear variable coefficient boundary value problem by comparing the scheme to Newton-Iteration and the Spectral Homotopy Analysis Method, which is the most commonly used implementation of the HAM.

Abstract:Nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) are crucial for modeling complex fluid dynamics and are foundational to many computational fluid dynamics (CFD) applications. However, solving these nonlinear PDEs is challenging due to the vast computational resources they demand, highlighting the pressing need for more efficient computational methods. Quantum computing offers a promising but technically challenging approach to solving nonlinear PDEs. Recently, Liao proposed a framework that leverages quantum computing to accelerate the solution of nonlinear PDEs based on the homotopy analysis method (HAM), a semi-analytical technique that transforms nonlinear PDEs into a series of linear PDEs. However, the no-cloning theorem in quantum computing poses a major limitation, where directly applying quantum simulation to each HAM step results in exponential complexity growth with the HAM truncation order. This study introduces a "secondary linearization" approach that maps the whole HAM process into a system of linear PDEs, allowing for a one-time solution using established quantum PDE solvers. Our method preserves the exponential speedup of quantum linear PDE solvers while ensuring that computational complexity increases only polynomially with the HAM truncation order. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach by applying it to the Burgers' equation and the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. Our approach provides a novel pathway for transforming nonlinear PDEs into linear PDEs, with potential applications to fluid dynamics. This work thus lays the foundation for developing quantum algorithms capable of solving the Navier-Stokes equations, ultimately offering a promising route to accelerate their solutions using quantum computing.

Abstract:The interaction of nonlinear progressive waves and uniform currents in water of finite depth is investigated analytically by means of the homotopy analysis method (HAM). In the HAM, the velocity potential of the wave is expressed by Fourier series and the nonlinear free surface boundary conditions are satisfied by continuous mapping. The present approach does not depend on any small parameters, thus the solutions are suitable for steep waves and strong currents. To verify the HAM solutions, experiments are conducted in wave-current flume of Education Ministry Key Laboratory of Hydrodynamics at SJTU. It is shown that the HAM solutions are in good agreement with experimental measurements The present study demonstrated that the great potential of the HAM to solve more complex wave-current interaction problems leading to engineering applications in traditional offshore industry and marine renewable energy sector.
