Abstract:We introduce a simple wavefront sensing scheme for aberration measurement of pulsed laser beams in near-infrared wavelengths (<2200 nm), where detectors are not always available or are very expensive. The method is based on two-photon absorption in a silicon detector array for longer wavelengths detection. Abstract:We present a learning-based Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor (SHWS) to achieve the high-order aberration detection without image segmentation or centroid positioning. Zernike coefficient amplitudes of aberrations measured from biological samples are referred and expanded to generate the training datasets. With one SHWS pattern inputted, up to 120th Zernike modes could be predicted within 10.9 ms with 95.56% model accuracy by a personal computer. The statistical experimental results show that compared with traditional modal-based SHWS, the root mean squared error in phase residuals of this method is reduced by ∼40.54% and the Strehl ratio of the point spread functions is improved by ∼27.31%. The aberration detection performance of this method is also validated on a mouse brain slice with 300 µm thickness and the median improvement of peak-to-background ratio of this method is ∼30% to 40% compared with traditional SHWS. With the high detection accuracy, simple processes, fast prediction speed and good compatibility, this work offers a potential approach to improve the wavefront sensing ability of SHWS, which could be combined with an existing adaptive optics system and be further applied in biological applications.

Abstract:The Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor (SHWS) is an essential tool for wavefront sensing in adaptive optical microscopes. However, the distorted spots induced by the complex wavefront challenge its detection performance. Here, we propose a deep learning based wavefront detection method which combines point spread function image based Zernike coefficient estimation and wavefront stitching. Rather than using the centroid displacements of each micro-lens, this method first estimates the Zernike coefficients of local wavefront distribution over each micro-lens and then stitches the local wavefronts for reconstruction. The proposed method can offer low root mean square wavefront errors and high accuracy for complex wavefront detection, and has potential to be applied in adaptive optical microscopes.

Abstract:Recently, phase retrieval techniques have garnered significant attention with their exceptional flexibility. However, their application is limited in optical systems with high numerical aperture due to the disregarded polarization properties of the beam. In this paper, a fast wavefront sensing method for tightly focused systems is proposed. Firstly, a vector diffraction model based on the chirp-Z transform is established to analytically describe the focal spot using the modal coefficients of polynomials and diffraction basis vectors, which accommodating any pixel size and resolution, thereby enabling to break through sampling constraints and remove lateral errors. Additionally, a modified Newton-gradient second-order algorithm is introduced to simultaneously optimize wavefront in multiple polarization directions, without the need for diffraction operators during iterations. Both numerical simulations and error analysis confirm the efficacy and precision of the proposed wavefront sensing method.

Abstract:A fast and simple solution is proposed to wavefront sensing for laser beams with spatial smoothly varying intensity, where Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor and the modified Fourier domain centroiding algorithm are applied. Detailed analysis has been conducted to Fourier domain centroiding, simplifying the origin double-frame method to work with merely single frame, and revealing its interesting property of robustness to nonuniform intensity perturbation. The key parameter is also analyzed to optimize the algorithm's performance. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the center of gravity algorithm, with an average phase error reduction up to approximately one order in root mean square. Application of the proposed method in joint amplitude-phase compensation system is also verified by simulation with practical models and parameters. The modified Fourier domain centroiding is promising to enhance real-time actual wavefront measurement for adaptive optics in high-power lasers, such as joint amplitude-phase compensation. Abstract:Dynamic wavefront aberrations negatively impact a wide range of optical applications including astronomy, optical free-space telecommunications and bio-imaging. Wavefront errors can be compensated by an adaptive optics system comprised of a deformable mirror and wavefront sensor connected by a control loop. For satellite optical communications (SatCom), wavefront sensing is particularly challenging due to the rapid wavefront fluctuations induced by strong turbulence and movement of the transmitting satellite across the sky. Existing wavefront sensing techniques require fast cameras (>kHz) that are not widely available at wavelengths suitable for SatCom (e.g., 1550nm and mid-to-long wave infrared). Here, we propose a new wavefront sensing technique that uses a single photodiode and a fast mirror to make phase-diverse intensity measurements of the incoming wavefront. We train neural networks to accurately estimate the input phase given this phase-diverse sub-millisecond intensity trace. Our simulations show that our technique is robust in cases of strong turbulence where previous modal wavefront sensors fail due to modal crosstalk, achieving 99% of the optimal Strehl ratio from a 50-mode correction at a sensing rate of 2kHz. We explore typical cases of turbulence magnitude, sensing speed and noise that might be encountered by such a system.

Abstract:Wavefront sensors are an important tool to characterize coherent beams of extreme ultraviolet radiation. However, conventional Hartmann-type sensors do not allow for independent wavefront characterization of different spectral components that may be present in a beam, which limits their applicability for intrinsically broadband high-harmonic generation (HHG) sources. Here we introduce a wavefront sensor that measures the wavefronts of all the harmonics in a HHG beam in a single camera exposure. By replacing the mask apertures with transmission gratings at different orientations, we simultaneously detect harmonic wavefronts and spectra, and obtain sensitivity to spatiotemporal structure such as pulse front tilt as well. We demonstrate the capabilities of the sensor through a parallel measurement of the wavefronts of 9 harmonics in a wavelength range between 25 and 49 nm, with up to lambda/32 precision.

Abstract:A versatile wavefront sensor is described, using a two-dimensional acousto-optic modulator (AOM) driven with double radio frequencies in both the orthogonal directions. Inserted in the spectral plane in a 4-f system, the AOM acts like a moving double-frequency crossed grating. The proposed wavefront sensor inherits the advantages of a double-frequency grating lateral shearing interferometer in the aspects of high-resolution slope estimations and structure compactness. The sensor naturally performs as a heterodyne detection system, thanks to the inherent property of traveling waves in acousto-optic modulators. Variable shear can be acquired conveniently by electronically adjusting the driving frequencies, with the optimal performance achieved under different circumstances involving parameters such as accuracy, dynamic range, and signal-to-noise ratio. Beyond the proposed concept, theory analysis is presented in detail, and simulations are carried out to demonstrate the principle and validation of the proposed wavefront sensor. Abstract:Conventional wavefront sensors suffer from the fundamental limitation of the space-bandwidth product and have a trade-off between their spatial sampling interval and dynamic range. Here, nonlocal thin film optical filters with optimized angle- and polarization-dependent responses are leveraged to circumvent the fundamental limitation, and a robust single-shot wavefront sensing system with a small spatial sampling interval of 6.9 & mu;m and a large angular dynamic range of 15 & DEG; is realized. The system only requires inserting two multilayer dielectric filters, fabricated using a mature thin film deposition technique, into a conventional 4-f imaging apparatus. The polarization-sensitive nonlocal filters are used to map the 2D phase gradients of the incident light field to the intensity variation of the x- and y-polarized light, respectively, thus enabling single-shot 2D wavefront reconstruction from images taken by a polarization camera. Such a system may be used for a variety of applications, including high-resolution image aberration correction, surface metrology, and quantitative phase imaging. A new type of single-shot wavefront sensing system based on nonlocal thin film optical filters is demonstrated, with an extremely small spatial sampling interval of 6.9 & mu;m and a large angular dynamic range of 15 & DEG;. Multiplexed wavefront sensing with a thin diffuser

Abstract:In astronomy or biological imaging, refractive index inhomogeneities of e.g. atmosphere or tissues induce optical aberrations which degrade the desired information hidden behind the medium. A standard approach consists in measuring these aberrations with a wavefront sensor (e.g Shack-Hartmann) located in the pupil plane, and compensating them either digitally or by adaptive optics with a wavefront shaper. However, in its usual implementation this strategy can only extract aberrations within a single isoplanatic patch, i.e. a region where the aberrations remain correlated. This limitation severely reduces the effective field-of-view in which the correction can be performed. Here, we propose a new wavefront sensing method capable of measuring, in a single shot, various pupil aberrations corresponding to multiple isoplanatic patches. The method, based on a thin diffuser (i.e a random phase mask), exploits the dissimilarity between different speckle regions to multiplex several wavefronts incoming from various incidence angles. We present proof-of-concept experiments carried out in wide-field fluorescence microscopy. A digital deconvolution procedure in each isoplanatic patch yields accurate aberration correction within an extended field-of-view. This approach is of interest for adaptive optics applications as well as diffractive optical tomography.

Abstract:Recent trends of interferometric wavefront sensing tend to focus on high precision, anti-vibration, compact, along with much more involved of electric and computer technology. And the optical principles employed not only limit to interference but also include diffraction, scattering, polarization, etc. In this paper, some selected examples basing on the research works in our group will be given to illustrate the trends mentioned above. To achieve extra high accuracy, phase-shifting point diffraction interferometry (PS-PDI) is believed to be a good candidate as it employs a nearly perfect point diffraction spherical wavefront as the reference and also takes advantage of the high precision of phase-shifting algorithms. Cyclic radial shearing interferometry (C-RSI) successively demonstrate the anti-vibration characteristic and can diagnose transient wavefront with only one single shot by employing a three-mirror common-path configuration and a synchronizing system. In contrast sharply with those early interferometers, interferometers with very compact configuration are more suitable to develop portable wavefront sensing instruments. Cross-grating lateral shearing interferometer (CG-LSI) is a very compact interferometer that adopts a cross-grating of millimeters to produce lateral shearing of the diffraction wave of the test wavefront. Be aware that, computer technique has been used a lot in all of the above interferometers but the non-null annual sub-aperture stitching interferometer (NASSI) for general aspheric surface testing mostly relies on the computer model of the physical interferometer setup and iterative ray-tracing optimization. The principles of the above mentioned interferometric wavefront sensing methods would be given in detail.

Abstract:The classic Hartmann test consists of an array of holes to reconstruct the wavefront from the local deviation of each focal spot, and Shack-Hartmann sensor improved that with an array of microlenses. This array of microlenses imposes practical limitations when the wavefront is not into of visible wavelengths, e.g., the fabrication of these. Instead, we propose a wavefront-sensing technique using an array of circular obstructions, i.e., the Hartmann sensor with an inverted Hartmann array. We show that under the same conditions the inverted Hartmann sensor and the Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor have an equivalent spot-map to recover the wavefront. The method might used in non-visible wavelengths and in a wider range of applications.

Abstract:The Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor is the most widely used instrument to measure the optical aberrations of the human eye. Traditional Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensors measure the ocular aberrations at a single wavelength, which is usually in the near infrared region of the spectrum. A modified Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor that simultaneously measures aberrations at three visible wavelengths is discussed. The modified instrument provides a measurement of the longitudinal chromatic aberration of the eye in addition to the monochromatic aberrations provided by the conventional device. Human subjects testing results and the comparison of measured LCA with clinical values are presented.

Abstract:The Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor is widely employed in adaptive optics systems to measure optical aberrations. However, simultaneously achieving high sensitivity and large dynamic range is still challenging, limiting the performance of diagnosing fast-changing turbulence. To overcome this limitation, we propose neuromorphic Shack-Hartmann wave normal sensing (NeuroSH). NeuroSH is a unifying framework that harnesses the computational neuromorphic imaging paradigm to extract the high-dimensional wave normal from temporal diversity measurements. Both numerical analysis and experimental verification demonstrate the feasibility of NeuroSH. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed NeuroSH is the first scheme to surpass the optical dynamic range limitation under challenging dynamic scenarios, thereby advancing ultra-fast turbulence mitigation technology for cutting-edge imagers.

Abstract:A novel wavefront sensing method based on phase contrast theory and coherent optical processing is proposed. The wavefront gradient field in the object plane is modulated into intensity distribution in a gang of patterns, making high-density detection available. By applying the method, we have also designed a wavefront sensor. It consists of a classical coherent optical processing system, a CCD detector array, two pieces of orthogonal composite sinusoidal gratings, and a mechanical structure that can perform real-time linear positioning. The simulation results prove and demonstrate the validity of the method and the sensor in high-precision measurement of the wavefront gradient field.
High Sensitivity Wavefront Sensing with a non-linear Curvature Wavefront Sensor

Abstract:A new wavefront sensing approach, derived from the successful curvature wavefront sensing concept but using a non-linear phase retrieval wavefront reconstruction scheme, is described. The non-linear curvature wavefront sensor (nlCWFS) approaches the theoretical sensitivity limit imposed by fundamental physics by taking full advantage of wavefront spatial coherence in the pupil plane. Interference speckles formed by natural starlight encode wavefront aberrations with the sensitivity set by the telescope's diffraction limit lambda/D rather than the seeing limit of more conventional linear WFSs. Closed-loop adaptive optics simulations show that with a nlCWFS, a 100 nm RMS wavefront error can be reached on a 8-m telescope on a mV = 13 natural guide star. The nlCWFS technique is best suited for high precision adaptive optics on bright natural guide stars. It is therefore an attractive technique to consider for direct imaging of exoplanets and disks around nearby stars, where achieved performance is set by wavefront control accuracy, and exquisite control of low order aberrations is essential for high contrast coronagraphic imaging. Performance gains derived from simulations are shown, and approaches for high speed reconstruction algorithms are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensors (SHWS) are generally used to measure the wavefront curvature of light beams. Measurement accuracy and the sensitivity of these sensors are important factors for better wavefront sensing. In this study, we demonstrate a new type of SHWS with better measurement accuracy than the regular SHWS. The lenslet array in the regular SHWS is replaced with an array of coded phase masks and the principle of coded aperture correlation holography (COACH) is used for wavefront reconstruction. Sharper correlation peaks achieved by COACH improve the accuracy of the estimated local slopes of the measured wavefront and consequently improve the reconstruction accuracy of the overall wavefront. Experimental results confirm that the proposed method provides a lower mean square wavefront error by one order of magnitude in comparison to the regular SHWS.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that it is difficult for the conventional Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor to achieve high-precision wavefront reconstruction with low spatial sampling, a kind of Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensing technology based on four-quadrant binary phase modulation is proposed in this paper. By introducing four-quadrant binary phase modulation into each subaperture, the technology is able to use an optimization algorithm to reconstruct wavefronts with high precision. The feasibility and effectiveness of this method are verified at extreme low spatial frequency by a series of numerical simulations, which show that the proposed method can reliably reconstruct wavefronts with high accuracy with rather low spatial sampling. In addition, the experiment demonstrates that with a 2 × 2 microlens array, the four-quadrant binary phase-modulated Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor is able to achieve approximately 54% reduction in wavefront reconstitution error over the conventional Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor.
