Abstract:CdS nanoparticles with various shapes were directly synthesized in several solvents by adopting a solvothermal route at 160 degrees C for 12hours respectively, using distilled water(H2O), N,N-Dimethylformamide(DMF), ethanolamine(an) and ethylenediamine(en) as the solvent and the shape-controlled reactant. The structure and morphology of the products are characterized, and the effect of the solvents on the structure, shape and size has been discussed, considering the physical and structural properties of the solvents. The optical properties of the products synthesized in an and en were revealed by photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The above results contribute to the synthesis of CdS and other semiconductor nanoparticles with tuned and controllable shape and size.
Synergy Between Structure Characteristics and the Solution Chemistry in a Near/Non-Equilibrium Oxidative Etching of Penta-Twinned Palladium Nanorods

Abstract:Oxidative etching possesses an enriched flexibility and atomic-level accuracy in tailoring the size, morphology, surface structure, and composition of colloidal nanocrystals toward their catalytic and sensing applications. In this work, we choose one-dimensional penta-twinned Pd nanorods as a model system and apply liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (LCTEM) to investigate the detailed nanoscale etching process under different solution environments, which are DI water/e-beam (weakly oxidative), sodium chloride (NaCl) solution/e-beam (moderately oxidative), and ferric chloride (FeCl3) solution/e-beam (strongly oxidative), respectively. Increasing the oxidative strength of solution alone accelerates the dissolution kinetics and drives the system from the (near)-equilibrium etching, where nanorods appear in flat and low-indexed ends (for DI water/e-beam) to nonequilibrium etching with slender tips formed as intermediate products (for FeCl3/e-beam). Under a nonequilibrium etching condition, both symmetric and asymmetric etching occurred, that is, the penta-twinned structure either retained (for symmetric etching) or dissolved to a fourfold-, threefold-, and twofold-twinned and single-crystalline structure (for asymmetric etching), depending on the structural defects-induced strain distribution. The formation of slender tips of different structures can be further understood via energetic analysis and strain relaxation. In particular, in situ LCTEM results were successfully reproduced by flask system-based etching experiments; hence, direct correlations were built between LCTEM and conventional colloidal etching reactions. This work comprehends the present understanding on the synergetic roles of structure characteristics and solution chemistry for the etching of multiply twinned nanoparticles toward their precise controlled synthesis and practical applications.

Abstract:The nitrocellulose(NC) membrane was prepared by casting in different coagulation(solutions) of the polymer in three different solvent DMAC、DMSO and AC,respectively.The properties and concentration of solvent in(coagulation) were considered.The morphologies of top surfaces and cross-section of each membrane were characterized by scanning electron microscope.The resulting membrane characteristics were extensively discussed from kinetic and(thermodynamics.) The (result) indicates that the transport properties of the solvent-nonsolvent system affect the final(membrane) structure significantly.

Abstract:Micellar nanocrystals (micelles with encapsulated nanocrystals) have become an emerging major class of nanobiomaterials. We describe a method of fabricating micellar nanocrystals based on combining top-down electrospray, bottom-up self-assembly, and solvent-based structure control. This method involves first using electrospray to generate uniform ultrafine liquid droplets, each of which functions as a micro-reactor in which self-assembly reaction occurs forming micellar nanocrystals, with the structures (micelle shape and nanocrystal encapsulation) controlled by the organic solvent used. This method is largely continuous and produces high quality micellar nanocrystal products with an inexpensive structure control approach. By using a water-miscible organic solvent tetrahydrofuran (THF), worm-shaped micellar nanocrystals can be produced due to solvent-induced/facilitated micelle fusion. Compared with the common spherical micellar nanocrystals, worm-shaped micellar nanocrystals can offer minimized non-specific cellular uptake, thus enhancing biological targeting. By co-encapsulating multiple nanocrystals into each micelle, multifunctional or synergistic effects can be achieved. Current limitations of this fabrication method, which will be part of the future work, primarily include imperfect encapsulation in the micellar nanocrystal product and the incompletely continuous nature of the process.
Solvent-controlled Synthesis of Three-Dimensional TiO2 Nanostructures Via a One-Step Solvothermal Route

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) TiO2 nanostructures with various microstructures have been successfully synthesized by altering the solvent via a surfactant-free and single-step solvothermal route. The effects of the solvent on the microstructures of 3D TiO2 nanostructures were investigated. 3D dandelion-like TiO2 structures self-assembled of nanorods were synthesized in non-polar solvent based on water-non-polar solvent interface. For the product derived from the solvent of n-hexane, the 3D microspheres have a homogeneous size distribution in diameter of about 2 mu m and a uniform morphology of radially packed nanorods of 15 nm in diameter along a [001] preference growth direction. A three-step growth model is proposed to illustrate the growth mechanism of TiO2 nanorods self-assembled into 3D dandelion-like structures. Microspheres composed of nanoparticles are obtained using low polar or polar solvent such as n-butyl alcohol and ethanol, which are also amphiphilic solvents. The amphiphile bilayer capped outside the particle serves as the microreactor and soft temple for crystal growth. Only bulky aggregated TiO2 nanoparticles were obtained when pure water is used as the solvent due to the fast hydrolysis of titanium precursor. Mechanisms of the self-assembly of 3D TiO2 structures in different solvents were proposed.

Abstract:To have a better understanding on molecular mechanism of the crystal morphology manipulation, the effect of solvents on morphology of crystals was investigated by using sulfamerazine (SMR) as model compound, through combination of experimental investigations and molecular simulations. The modified attachment energy model was employed to build the crystal morphology model in different solvents. Hirshfeld surfaces and 2-D fingerprint plots were used to investigate the solute-solute interactions, and molecular dynamics simulation was employed to investigate the interactions between solvent molecules and different crystal faces. Function of factors such as surface structure, roughness and the radial distribution function were also considered and discussed. The results suggested these factors are important to crystal habits since they could affect the adsorption competition between the solute and solvent molecules. It was found that the method developed in this work could be used to predict the morphology of SMR and could guide the selection of crystallization solvents for obtaining target morphology.

Abstract:The solvent effect on the self-assembly of polystyrene (PS) colloidal spheres for the fabrication of colloidal crystals (CCs) using the horizontal deposition method was investigated. Solvents containing water and ethanol of different volume fractions were examined. Samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and UV–vis–near-infrared spectroscopy techniques. It was found that the surface morphology and local structure of the CCs were significantly affected by the solvent. It was also observed that by adding minute quantity of a tetraethyl orthosilicate sol into the colloidal suspension, well ordered three-dimensional PS CCs without cracks were obtained. Experimental conditions were optimized and high-quality CCs in larger domains were fabricated with PS spheres as big as 2μm in diameter. The success in fabricating CCs using colloidal spheres larger than 1.5μm in diameter represents a significant work, especially when applications in photonics and tissue engineering are concerned.

Abstract:Recently the crystallization-driven self-assembly of block copolymers into semicrystalline micelles in the selective solvent has been paid increasing attention due to the good controllability. In this paper we first review some factors controlling the morphology and size of the semicrystalline micelles of block copolymers, including solvent quality, structure of block copolymers, and crystallization temperature. The living growth of semicrystalline micelles with time and formation of "block co-micelles" using micelles as building blocks are also introduced. Finally, currently existing problems and outlook in this field are discussed.
Ligand-Solvent Library Design for Tailoring Interparticle Interactions in Colloidal Nanocrystals

Abstract:This study explores the critical role of nonpolar ligand-solvent in modulating interparticle interactions in colloidal nanocrystals, which profoundly affects colloidal stability and enables bottom-up precision self-assembly. We created a library comprising 28 distinct ligands and three different solvents to investigate how the position of various modifications—specifically double bond, branched chain, benzene ring, and naphthalene ring—influence ligand crystallinity and interparticle attraction in nonpolar solvents. Through explicit solvent simulations, we demonstrated that placing molecular fragments near the head group or in the midsection of the ligand chain leads to disordered ligand structure, diminishing interparticle attraction, while terminal positioning fosters ordered ligand packing and attractive interactions. By fine-tuning fragment positions or combining two fragments, we achieved control over the crystallinity of ligand bundles, thereby influencing the attraction in the "touch" mode. Additionally, we examine the effects of solvent size on solvation, revealing its potential to independently control attraction in the "lock" mode. These findings enhance our understanding of ligand-solvent dynamics and lay the groundwork for the precise manipulation of nanocrystal self-assembly.

Abstract:This paper reports how the morphology of a polymer–fullerene derivative blend is tuned via the different aggregate states of the polymer in solutions. Based on a copolymer with benzodiothiophene and thiophene-3-carboxylate as alternating units (PBDTCT), we explored the polymer aggregation (i.e., organo-gels) behavior as a function of steric hindrance of aromatic solvents imposed by substituents. We showed that the size of organo-gels decreased as the substituents of solvents got larger. Also, the phase separation and domain size of the subsequent spin-coated films increased monotonically with that of the organo-gels in solution. Through this knowledge, we eventually achieve controlled morphology and optimized organic solar cells (OSCs) performance. Our results present a significant step forward for understanding the self-assembly behavior of conjugated polymers, control of their morphology and optimization of OSC performance.

Abstract:Solvent has a key role in the controllable synthesis of nanocrystals (NCs). Here, using X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we demonstrate that solvent can significantly influence the adsorption of thiols on Au NCs, and thereby affects their growth. It is shown that increasing the solvent polarities leads to the higher thiol coverage on the NC surface. The high coverage of thiols then retards the growth of particles, and as a result, the NCs' sizes decrease with the increase in the solvents' polarities. The underlying reason for the solvent dependence is proposed to be the synergistic effects of different hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interactions between the sulfhydryl and alkyl groups of thiols with the solvents molecules. This work addresses the important role of the solvent environments in the size-controlled synthesis of NCs.

Abstract:In this article we investigated the effect of solvents (CCl4, CH3CN, DMF, ethanol, ethanol–H2O and H2O) on self-assembly of Thioctic acid (TA) and Mercaptohexanol (MCH) on gold by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Electrochemical characteristics of TA and MCH self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed in different solvents were evaluated by inspecting the ions permeability (interfacial capacitance C and phase angle Ф1Hz) and electron transfer capability (current density difference Δi and charge transfer resistance Rct). Experimental results indicated that the ability of solvents availing the ordering of SAMs was: for TA, CCl4>ethanol>CH3CN>ethanol–H2O>DMF; for MCH, H2O>ethanol–H2O≈CCl4>ethanol≈CH3CN>DMF. Through relating the C, Ф1Hz, Δi and Rct of SAMs (TA and MCH) with parameters of solvent (polarity ETN, solubility parameter δ and octanol/water partition coefficients logPow), it was found that solvents with bigger logPow (smaller ETN and δ) availed the ordering of TA-SAMs but the effect of solvents on MCH self-assembly was complex and MCH-SAMs formed in H2O (the biggest ETN, δ and the smallest logPow) and CCl4 (the smallest ETN, δ and the biggest logPow) were more ordered than in other solvents.

Abstract:ABSTRACTPoly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning PEO solution with a mixed solvent of ethanol and deionized water. The results show that the mixed solvent system has noteworthy influences on structures and properties of electrospun PEO nanofibers, including molecular chain orientation, crystallinity degree, surface morphology, fiber diameter, diameter distribution, spinnability, and productivity. With increasing ethanol content in the mixed solvent, wrinkly morphologies appear on the surface of PEO nanofibers due to a high evaporation rate of ethanol during electrospinning process. The dielectric constant, dipole moment, conductivity, density, boiling point, and solubility parameter of the mixed solvent become lower with the ethanol content increasing. Besides, the hydrogen‐bonding interactions between PEO and solvents become weaker. Abstract:Coarse grained simulations were adopted to describe the encapsulation and dispersion of fullerene C 60 by hexaoxyethylene dodecyl ether (C 12 E 6 ) surfactants. The self-organised structures of C 12 E 6 molecules in water were captured and the characteristics of micelles composed of different number of C 12 E 6 molecules were analysed. We found that C 60 molecules alone or in clusters can spontaneously translate into the hydrophobic core of micelles. One monomeric C 60 can explore the hydrocarbon-chain region of the micelles with different sizes, and two different preferential locations of C 60 are observed. The small C 60 clusters can disaggregate after entering the micelle. Larger C 60 clusters can penetrate into the micelle as solid-like nanoparticles, although they are partially disaggregated. When investigating the self-assembly of C 12 E 6 surfactants and C 60 molecules, we found that it is very difficult to disperse C 60 in the micelle monomolecularly. At high molar ratio of C 12 E 6 /C 60 , colloidal nanoC 60 aggregates form with C 12 E 6 surfactants adsorbed on the surface. Our simulations provide an explanation for the different observations in fullerene solubilization in micellar solutions and give a guideline for further solubilization of pristine fullerene or small hydrophobic molecules with surfacant micelles, which is helpful for the design of new micelle-based delivery vehicles.

Abstract:The effects of six organic modifiers (urea, methanol, dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, acetonitrile and 2-propanol) on the retention mechanism and separation selectivity of the bulk buffer in micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC) with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles as pseudo-stationary phase have been investigated through linear solvation energy relationships (LSERs). It is found that the retention value in MECC systems with or without organic modifier is primarily dependent on the solvophobic interaction and the hydrogen bonding interaction with the solute as proton acceptor, while the dipolar interaction and the hydrogen bonding interaction with the solute as proton donor play minor roles. The effects of the organic modifiers on the solvophobic, dipolar and hydrogen bonding interactions are evaluated in terms of the relationship between regression coefficient of the LSER equations and the modifier concentration. The variations of the solvophobic interaction and the dipolar interaction with change of the modifier concentration can be approximately explained using the solubility parameter and the dipolarity/polarizability parameter of the organic modifier, respectively. However, the relationships between the hydrogen bond acidity and basicity of the bulk buffer and the organic modifiers are rather complicated. Those results may be caused from the displacement of organic modifiers to the water adsorbed on the micellar surface as well as changes in the acidity and basicity of the bulk buffer with the addition of organic modifiers. In addition, it is found that the phase ratio is influenced significantly by the use of organic modifier.
Solvent-controlled synthesis and photocatalytic activity of hollow TiO2 microspheres prepared by the solvothermal method

Abstract:Hollow titanium dioxide (TiO2) microspheres are important metal oxide nanomaterials that can be synthesized via facile template-free solvothermal method based on the Ostwald ripening process. The properties of the organic solvents imposed significant effects on the microstructures and properties of the final products. However, the effects of solvent type were less understood during the formation of hollow TiO2 microspheres. So in this work, four organic solvents, namely methanol, isopropanol, ethanediol and actone, were selected to mix with ethanol as the mixed solvents for the solvothermal synthesis of hollow TiO2 microspheres based on the Ostwald ripening process. Special attentions were paid to the morphology and crystallinity of TiO2 nanostructures. A series of characterization results showed that acetone had significant effects on the construction of hollow structures due to its moderate polarity, low boiling point and viscosity. This method demonstrated the great controllability of the hollow structures. The TiO2 nanostructures with hollow structures exhibited an enhanced performance for degradation of Rhodamine B. When irradiated with ultraviolet light for 120 min, the residual rates of RhB solutions were almost zero.

Abstract:A typical colloidal nanoparticle can be viewed as a nanocrystal-ligands complex with an inorganic single-crystalline core, the nanocrystal, bonded with a monolayer of organic ligands. The surface chemistry of nanocrystal-ligands complexes is crucial to their bulk properties. However, deciphering the molecular pictures of the nonperiodic and dynamic organic-inorganic interlayer is a grand technical challenge, and this hampers the quantitative perception of their macroscopic phenomena. Here we show that the atomic arrangement on nanocrystal surface and ligand-ligand interactions can be precisely quantified through comprehensive solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) methodologies. The analyses reveal that the mixed ligands of n-alkanoates on a CdSe nanocrystal segregate in areal partitions and the unique arrangement unlocks their rotational freedom. The mathematical model based on the NMR-derived ligand partition and dynamics successfully predicts the unusual solubility of nanocrystal-ligands complexes with mixed ligands, which is several orders of magnitude higher than that of nanocrystal-ligands complexes with pure ligands.
