Abstract:In this paper, we propose a real-time free-running time scale based on four remote hydrogen masers. The clocks in the ensemble were scattered around Beijing, connected by urban fiber links using a novel frequency synchronization system. The remote clock ensemble prevents the time scale from potential problems caused by correlation among co-located clocks. Insofar as it is real-time, it fulfills the requirements for applications such as navigation, telecommunications and so on. The free-running time scale is updated every 1200 s, and a disturbance-resistant algorithm makes it robust to fiber link disturbances and clock malfunctions. The results of a continuous experiment over 224 d are reported. The stability of the time scale outperformed any clock in the ensemble for averaging times of more than approximately 104 s.

Abstract:Taking advantage of the fiber-based frequency transfer technique, we build up the Beijing Time and Frequency Network which connects several hydrogen masers of different institutes precisely and in real time. With this network, we generate a time scale out of 4 clocks each from a different institute. Distinguished from most of the existing time scales, this one is both “real-time” and “based on remote clocks”, which means it can serve more applications which require real-time time service and can be more reliable at the same time. Hardware system is built to output physical signal of the time scale, and this system is currently running continuously and healthily.

Abstract:An IEEE 1588 based application scheme was proposed to achieve accurate time synchronization for a deep seafloor observatory network based on the communication topological structure of the Zhejiang University Experimental and Research Observatory. The principles of the network time protocol (NTP) and precision time protocol (PTP) were analyzed. The framework for time synchronization of the shore station, undersea junction box layer, and submarine science instrument layer was designed. NTP and PTP network signals were decoded by a PTP master clock on a shore station that receives signals from the Global Positioning System and the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System as reference time sources. These signals were remotely transmitted by a subsea optical-electrical composite cable through an Ethernet passive optical network. Accurate time was determined by time synchronization devices in each layer. Synchronization monitoring experiments performed within a laboratory environment indicated that the proposed system is valid and has the potential to realize microsecond accuracy to satisfy the time synchronization requirements of a high-precision seafloor observatory network.

Abstract:We build up a time and frequency synchronization system via the 80 km urban fiber link between Tsinghua University and the National Institute of Metrology in Changping city. Using the system, we demonstrate simultaneous time and RF signal distribution via optical fibers. The measured frequency dissemination stability of a 9.1 GHz RF signal is 7 x 10(-15)/s, 5 x 10(-19)/day, and the measured time synchronization accuracy is 50 ps. Relevant results were published on the Scientific Reports of Nature Publishing Group. To further build up a regional time and frequency network, integrated-designed modules are needed. Its long term continuous running stability and commonality should be tested. In this paper, we introduce the design of the frequency dissemination modules. After 135 days' continuously running, we get the million-second frequency dissemination stability of 8 x 10(-19)/10(6) s. We also introduce our multiple-access download module, which improves the frequency dissemination scheme from the traditional point to point protocol to be a tree structure protocol, and greatly improves its applicability. Using it, the stability of the receiving frequency signal at arbitrary accessing point is almost 4 orders of magnitude better than that using directly accessing method. All of these modules will be applied to build up the regional time and frequency network.

Abstract:Precision time synchronization between two remote sites is desired in many applications such as global positioning satellite systems, long-baseline interferometry, coherent radar detection and fundamental physics constant measurements. The recently developed frequency dissemination technologies based on optical fiber link have improved the transfer instability to the level of 10−19/day at remote location. Therefore it is possible to keep clock oscillation at remote locations continuously corrected, or to reproduce a “virtual” clock on the remote location. However the initial alignment and the correction of 1 pps timing signal from time to time are still required, besides the highly stabilized clock frequency transfer between distant locations. Here we demonstrate a time synchronization based on an ultra-stable frequency transfer system via 120-km commercial fiber link by transferring an optical frequency comb. Both the phase noise compensation in frequency dissemination and temporal basis alignment in time synchronization were implemented by a feed-forward digital compensation (FFDC) technique. The fractional frequency instability was measured to be 6.18 × 10−20 at 2000 s. The timing deviation of time synchronization was measured to be 0.6 ps in 1500 s. This technique also can be applied in multi-node fiber network topology.

Abstract:system of jointly transferring time signals with a rate of 1 pulse per second (PPS) and frequency signals of 10 MHz via a dense wavelength division multiplex-based (DWDM) fiber is demonstrated in this paper. The noises of the fiber links are suppressed and compensated for by a controlled fiber delay line. A method of calibrating and characterizing time is described. The 1PPS is synchronized by feed-forward calibrating the fiber delays precisely. The system is experimentally examined via a 110 km spooled fiber in laboratory. The frequency stabilities of the user end with compensation are 1.8 x 10(-14) at 1 s and 2.0 x 10(-17) at 10(4) s average time. The calculated uncertainty of time synchronization is 13.1 ps, whereas the direct measurement of the uncertainty is 12 ps. Next, the frequency and 1PPS are transferred via a metropolitan area optical fiber network from one central site to two remote sites with distances of 14 km and 110 km. The frequency stabilities of 14 km link reach 3.0 x 10(-14) averaged in 1 s and 1.4 x 10(-17) in 104 s respectively; and the stabilities of 110 km link are 8.3 x 10(-14) and 1.7 x 10(-17), respectively. The accuracies of synchronization are estimated to be 12.3 ps for the 14 km link and 13.1 ps for the 110 km link, respectively.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a high-precision time synchronization system over a fiber-optic network with an equivalent 2400 km backbone link and a 60 km urban access link. Time signals aligned with the master station can be available at arbitrary station over the backbone and access links. Moreover, link calibrations are not required, which decreases the operation and maintenance cost significantly. The high-precision, easy-to-implement and telecom-network-compatible time synchronization system demonstrated here opens up a possibility to providing synchronized time signals to multiple users over the public telecom fiber networks.

Abstract:Optical clocks are considered as promising candidates for redefining the second in the International System of Units. Compared with microwave clocks, optical clocks are powerful tools for the fundamental research such as the constancy of the fundamental constants, the validity of Einstein’s theory of general relativity, and the predictions of quantum electrodynamics. Recently two research groups have demonstrated the optical clocks with an unprecedented precision level of 10-18, which is two orders better than the present primary frequency standard. Using two Sr optical clocks and three Cs fountain clocks, SYRTE group has demonstrated the definition of second with optical clocks.#br#For redefining the second with optical clocks in the future, the optical clocks from the remote laboratories should have a high precision and the frequency of the optical clocks need to be transferred over a long distance, with extremely high precision. Unfortunately the conventional means of frequency transfer such as two-way satellite time and frequency transfer can reach a 10-16 level in one day which is far below the requirement for an optical clocks. Various methods have been developed to transfer optical frequency signal via optical fibers. Especially a research group from Germany has achieved a frequency transfer stability of 10-19 level in hundreds of seconds with a fiber length of 1840 km.#br#We demonstrate the recent development of optical frequency transfer over a 70-km fiber spool at National Time Service Center. The measurement shows that the compensation for the fiber noise is close to the limitation induced by the fiber delay for the Fourier frequency from 1 Hz to 250 Hz. The transfer stability (Allan deviation) of the fiber link is 1.2×10-15 in 1 s averaging time, and 1.4×10-18 in 10000 s. A preliminary test of the optical frequency transfer over a 100-km spooled fiber is achieved with a stability of roughly one order worse than the 71 km result, 5×10-15 in 1 s.#br#We demonstrate a new scheme of remote compensation for optical frequency transfer via fibers against conventional local compensation method. This new scheme has the advantage of great simplification of the local site, which can find applications in massive extension of star network. The key feature is that we transfer the mixture of the round-trip signal and local reference to the remote user’s end via an auxiliary fiber. At remote site, the fiber noise is measured and compensated by AOM2 accordingly.#br#Transfer stabilities of 13×10-15 in 1 s averaging time and 4.8×10-18 in 10000 s are achieved with the remote fiber noise compensation via a 25 km fiber spool. The demonstrated transfer stability is comparable to that obtained by the local fiber noise compensation method.#br#The future star fiber network of optical frequency transfer can benefit from this method, because the simpler local setup is required and even can be shared in the central site for multitudinous remote users.

Abstract:The synchronisation of time and frequency between remote locations is crucial for many important applications. Conventional time and frequency dissemination often makes use of satellite links. Recently, the communication fibre network has become an attractive option for long-distance time and frequency dissemination. Here, we demonstrate accurate frequency transfer and time synchronisation via an 80 km fibre link between Tsinghua University (THU) and the National Institute of Metrology of China (NIM). Using a 9.1 GHz microwave modulation and a timing signal carried by two continuous-wave lasers and transferred across the same 80 km urban fibre link, frequency transfer stability at the level of 5×10 −19 /day was achieved. Time synchronisation at the 50 ps precision level was also demonstrated. The system is reliable and has operated continuously for several months. We further discuss the feasibility of using such frequency and time transfer over 1000 km and its applications to long-baseline radio astronomy.

Abstract:A fiber-based, star-shaped joint time and frequency dissemination scheme is demonstrated. By working in cooperation with the existing commercial telecommunication network. Our scheme enables the frequency, time, and digital data networks to be integrated together and could represent an ideal option of interconnection among scientific institutions. The compensation functions of the time and frequency transfer scheme are set at the client nodes. The complexity of the central node is thus reduced, and future expansion by the addition of further branches will be accomplished more easily. During a performance test in which the ambient temperature fluctuation is 30 °C/day, timing signal dissemination stability is achieved to be approximately ±50 ps along 25-km-long fiber spools. After calibration, a timing signal synchronization accuracy of 100 ps is also realized. The proposed scheme offers an option of the construction of large-scale fiber-based frequency and time transfer networks.

Abstract:Time transfer over optical fiber is finding numerous applications and attracting extensive research. In this paper, we present a high-precision fiber-optic two-way time transfer network based on the time–frequency domain transform (TFDT) measurement. The time signals of different sites are embedded into the chirp pulse signals, the relative time interval of which is converted to the mutual beat frequency and then measured in frequency domain. Accordingly enhancing the transformation factor can improve the measurement accuracy to enable the two-way fiber-optic time transfer with picosecond-level resolution. The accuracy of the TFDT measurement is experimentally tested under different pulse widths and signal-to-noise ratios. Furthermore, we implement a three-node time transfer network over a 5.9 km fiber loop link by the picosecond-precision two-way time transfer. The time stabilities of both remote sites can reach around 0.36 ps at 10000 s averaging time.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a high-precision fiber-optic time transfer scheme based on bidirectional frequency division multiplexing and cross-correlation processing. Time signals at different stations are encoded as different time varying signals within different frequency passband, respectively. The transferred time varying signals are carried on the same wavelengths and transmitted to each other, which are precisely recovered at the receiving stations. The time differences between the received time varying signals and the one generated according to the local time signals are measured by cross correlation processing. Since the transferred time varying signals are non-overlapping on spectrum, back-scattering noises from fiber links can be effectively suppressed by simply electrical filtering. At the same time, the symmetry of bidirectional transmission can be guaranteed maximally to avoid the time-consuming and laborious link calibration, and support fiber link switching without requiring link re-calibration. The proposed scheme is experimentally demonstrated over 50 km, 100 km, 150 km fiber-links, respectively. The results show that the measured mean clock difference can be less than 3.55 ps over fibers with different lengths, and the stability in terms of time deviation can be less than 34.46 ps at 1 s and 1.26 ps at 1000 s over 150 km fiber-link, respectively.

Abstract:SummaryHigh-precision time comparison and synchronization is required with the increasing application of the optical clocks in precise navigation, gravitational sensing, and relativity experiments. However, previous works at femtosecond-level time synchronization did not extend beyond dozens of kilometers. Here we demonstrate real-time synchronization of two optical clocks over a turbulent 113-km free space link via optical two-way time and frequency transfer. Despite optical power attenuation of 80dB due to atmospheric turbulence, the time deviation between two synchronized time scales is below 50 fs over a 15-hour measurement period, and a stability of less than 1.6 × 10 −19 at 10,000 s is achieved through an out-of-loop time-frequency transfer link. The ability to synchronize two distant optical clocks can support future precision navigation, and it also provides technical foundation for the future femtosecond clock synchronization over ground-to-satellite free-space paths.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates the coherent optical frequency transfer over a 60 km fiber link between Innovation Academy for Precision Measurement Science and Technology , Chinese Academy of Sciences and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. A 1560 nm ultra-stable laser is used as the transfer laser, and an acousto-optic modulator is employed to actively compensate for the phase noise introduced by optical fibers to achieve noise suppression of 67 dB at 1 Hz Fourier frequency. The end-to-end transfer of the all-fiber structure is adopted by the system, and tracking oscillators are used to suppress the amplitude fluctuation of the heating signals caused by fiber polarization change. In this way, the system can operate without interruption all day. The optical frequency offset introduced by the link is at the order of magnitude of 10 -74 in the four-day measurement, and the frequency instability is measured to he 2.4 X 10(-17) in 1 s, 6. 6 X 10(-20) in 1000 s, and 6. 5 X 10(-)(23) in 65000 s. This result demonstrates the system is applicable for remote optical clock comparison.

Abstract:Owing to the characteristics of ultra-low loss and anti-electromagnetic interference, using optical fiber to deliver time and frequency signal has been a preferred choice for high precise clock dissemination and comparison. As a brilliant idea, one has been able to reproduce ultra-stable signals from one local station to multiple users. In this paper, we take a step further. A concept of multi-clock (in different locations) dissemination for multi-terminals is presented. By injecting frequency signals into one stabilized ring-like fiber network, the relative stabilities of 3.4e-14@1s for a master clock dissemination and 5.1e-14@1s for a slave clock dissemination have been achieved. The proposed scheme can greatly simplify the future 'N' to 'N' time and frequency dissemination network, especially facing a multi-clock comparison situation.

Abstract:In this letter, an implementation of high-precision time transfer over an 1839-km field fiber loop back link between two provincial capitals of China, Xi'an and Taiyuan, is reported. Time transfer stability of 6.5 ps at an averaging time of 1 s and 4.6 ps at 40000 s were achieved. The uncertainty for the time transfer system was evaluated, showing a budget of 56.2 ps. These results represent a significant milestone in achieving high-precision time transfer over a field fiber link spanning thousands of kilometers, signifying a record-breaking achievement for the real-field time transfer both in stability and in distance, which paves the way for constructing the nationwide high-precision time service via fiber network.

Abstract:We propose a high-precision joint time and frequency transmission scheme based on bidirectional wavelength division multiplexing transmission over an optical fiber link. The time signal is generated based on the phase-stable frequency signal with employment of a dedicated designed low-jitter event generator. Time synchronization is realized by eliminating the time difference between the time signals of the master and slave stations, which is determined by accurate two-way time comparison. In this way, thanks to the high stability of the frequency transmission, low jitter of the dedicated designed event generator, and the high accuracy of the two-way time comparison, a high precision time signal with enhanced time stability and accuracy can be obtained at the slave station, which is synchronized to the master station. Experimentally, a joint time and frequency transmission system is demonstrated over a 62-km urban fiber link. The results show a time stability in terms of time deviation (TDEV) of 3.5 ps/s and 430 fs/10,000 s, and an accuracy of better than 20 ps can be realized. (C) 2022 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:Most large experiments for high energy particle physics are time measurement related, which requires a network supporting the broadcast communication in order to distribute the central clock to all endpoints. In addition to conventional solutions using a dedicated network just for time synchronization, several groups have proposed to embed the clock distribution network into the data stream network. Using only a single bidirectional fiber link for all network abilities, some special demands for these experiments, for example, limited space for hardware and long distance connection, can be satisfied. As the time resolution of detectors is constant increasing, the performance requirement for time synchronization based on this unified network is challenged. In this paper, we propose to use the state-of-art techniques on field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) and optical circulator based fiber connections to implement the unified network. By constructing a prototype system with three levels of hierarchical structure, the time synchronization performance is experimentally measured. Benefitting from the single wavelength fiber connection, high precision time-to-digital convertors (TDC), and phase interpolator (PI) components in FPGA SerDes transceivers, the clock offset of the distribution can be precisely measured and automatically compensated. Through multiple times of power-on and reset operation test, the clock synchronization accuracy over 5 km fiber connection is measured less than 40 ps. By employing the jitter cleaner devices in clock recovered endpoints, the recovered clock in different levels have independent jitter less than 4 ps. In addition, the achieved high performance is also proved to be insensitive to operation temperature and the connection distance. The test results show that the proposed implementation is a straight-forward and practical method with the high performance that can meet the requirements of most current large-scale experiments.
