Abstract:The insertion reactions of transition metal cation doublet Zr + ( 2 D) into HF, HCl, H 2 O, H 2 S, NH 3 , PH 3 , CH4, and SiH 4 have been studied by means of ab initio molecular orbital calculations incorporating electron correlation with the Moller-Plesset perturbation theory up to the second and the fourth orders and the hybrid density functional method, B3LYP. Three regions of the potential surface have been investigated, an ion-molecule complex, followed by a three-center, four-electron transition state, and then an insertion product. It is found that all insertion reactions are exothermic and all transition states are below the energy surfaces of the reactants. For the ion-molecule complexes, the binding energies of the same-row hydrides increase from right to left, with the exception of CH 4 and SiH 4 , whose binding energies decline considerably; while to the same-group hydrides the ion-molecule complexes in the up row are more bound than those in the down row. The stability of the insertion product H-Zr + -RH n - 1 decreases from right to left across the row and falls from up to down across the column. The reaction barrier follows the same trend; i.e., the more exothermic the insertion reaction is, the lower is the reaction barrier. All these observed trends could be understood by a combined effect of the electrostatic interaction and the covalent interaction.

Abstract:The mechanisms for the oxidation of phenyl and hydride ligands of bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)hafnium derivatives (Cp* = η(5)-C5Me5) by nitrous oxide via selective oxygen atom transfer reactions have been systematically studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. On the basis of the calculations, we investigated the original mechanism proposed by Hillhouse and co-workers for the activation of N2O. The calculations showed that the complex with an initial O-coordination of N2O to the coordinatively unsaturated Hf center is not a local minimum. Then we proposed a new reaction mechanism to investigate how N2O is activated and why N2O selectively oxidize phenyl and hydride ligands of . Frontier molecular orbital theory analysis indicates that N2O is activated by nucleophilic attack by the phenyl or hydride ligand. Present calculations provide new insights into the activation of N2O involving the direct oxygen atom transfer from nitrous oxide to metal-ligand bonds instead of the generally observed oxygen abstraction reaction to generate metal-oxo species.

Abstract:The 1-aza-2-azoniaallene salts, generated from alpha-chlotoazo compounds by treatment with halophilic Lewis acids, undergo intramolecular C-H amination reactions to form pyrazolines in good to excellent yields. This intra-molecular amination occurs readily at :both benzylic and tertiary aliphatic positions and proceeds at an enantio enriched chiral center with retention Of stereochemistry. Competition experiments show that insertion occurs more readily At an electron-rich benzylic position than it does at an electron-deficient one The C-H amination reaction occurs only with certain tethers connecting the heteroallene cation and the pendant aryl groups. With a longer tether or when the reaction is intermolecular, electrophilic aromatic substitution occurs instead of C-H amination. The mechanism and origins of stereospecificity and chemoselectivity were explored with density functional theory (B3LYP and MO6-2X). The 1-aza-2-azoniaallene cation undergoes C-H amination through a hydride transfer transition state to form the N-H bond, and the subsequent C-N bond formation occurs spontaneously to generate the heterocyclic product. This concerted two-stage mechanism was shown by IRC and quasi-classical molecular dynamics trajectory studies.

Abstract:To further reveal the reactivity of cyclopropenylidene with R-H compounds, mechanisms of four reactions between cyclopropenylidene and R-H (R= F, OH, NH2, CH3) have been systematically investigated employing the second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) method. Geometry optimization, vibrational analysis, and energy property for the involved stationary points on the potential energy surface have been calculated. All the mechanisms of four reactions are identical to each other. Based on the calculated results, there are three steps (step a, b, and c) along the reaction between cyclopropenylidene and R-H. For the first step, cyclopropenylidene is inserted into R-H to form an three-membered ring intermediate. For the second step, the three-membered ring is opened to form a carbene intermediate. With regard to the third step, it is H-transfered processes, the ultimate product is alkyne.

Abstract:In this study, we describe the direct insertion of an intramolecular nitrogen atom into an aromatic C-C bond. In this transformation, carbamoyl azides are activated by a Rh catalyst and subsequently directly inserted into the C-C bond of an arene ring to access fused azepine products. This transformation is challenging, owing to the existence of a competitive C-H amination pathway. The use of a paddlewheel dirhodium complex Rh2(esp)2 effectively inhibited the undesired C-H insertion. Density functional theory calculations were performed to reveal the reaction mechanism and origin of the chemoselectivity of the Rh-catalyzed reactions. The novel fused azepine products are highly robust and allow for downstream diversification.

Abstract:An azacycle-directed intermolecular aromatic C-(sp(2))-H functionalization of Cr(0) Fischer carbene complexes under catalyst-free conditions is reported. Arenes with pyridines, pyrimidine, and pyrazole as directing groups reacted with chromium(0) carbene complexes in good yields and excellent regioselectivities. According to the mechanistic studies based on experiments and computations with density functional theory (DFT), the reaction is proposed to follow an unconventional mechanism via oxidative hydrogen migration and reductive elimination, which is different from the classical electrophilic substitution mechanism.

Abstract:Compound 1,3-diethyl-4-iodo-imidazolium iodide (H-1(I)) has been metalated at the C2 position through an oxidative addition/rearrangement reaction sequence. The oxidative addition of the C4–I bond to low-valent transition metals [M(PPh3)4] (M = Pd, Pt) yields presumably complexes bearing an abnormal carbene (aNHC) ligand. These complexes undergo a subsequent intermolecular rearrangement leading via metalation of the C2 position to the classical monometallic NHC complexes [2] and [3]. A plausible mechanism for the formations of [2] and [3] is proposed based on DFT calculations and MS studies. The reaction of hexafluorophosphonium salt H-1(PF6) with [Pd(PPh3)4] yields via oxidative addition of the C4–I bond to Pd0 the expected PdII aNHC complex [4](PF6).

Abstract:It is very important to develop multiple C-H substitution reactions of simple alkenes to obtain complex unsaturated components. The present study focuses on a theoretical investigation of the plausible mechanism in the Fe(OTf)3-catalyzed tandem amidomethylative reactions of α-phenylstyrene. Bis(tosylamido)methane is activated by Fe(OTf)3 to form tosylformaldimine and its Fe(OTf)3-adduct. The Fe(OTf)3-adduct undergoes an intermolecular aza-Prins reaction with α-phenylstyrene to form allylamide. The DFT data support the formation of the hexahydropyrimidine derivative from allylamide, and "condensation/iminium homologation/intramolecular aza-Prins" is the optimal reaction path. At the same time, a possible reaction pathway for the conversion of the hydrolysate 1,3-diamide derivative to the hexahydropyrimidine (HHP) derivative is given. This work is thus instructive for understanding Fe(iii)-based tandem catalysis for the amidomethylative multiple-substitution reactions of alkenes.

Abstract:The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of the cationic 1,3-dipolarophiles of azocarbenium ion 1 with HCN in the gas phase were examined using the density functional theory, QCISD method (Quadratic configuration interaction using single and double substitutions) and CCSD(T) (Coupled cluster calculations with single and double excitations and a perturbative estimate of triple contributions calculations) calculations. The theoretical results revealed that the reaction takes place via an initial formation of a 1:1 complex of the two reactants, mainly driven by charge interaction, followed by an asynchronous concerted cyclization forming the 3H-[1,2,4]-triazolium ion 3, which undergo [1,2]-H shift to provide the 1H-[1,2,4]-triazolium ion 4. The effect of the solvent has been modeled by using the isodensity-surface polarizable continuum (IPCM) model and the calculation showed that the reaction in CH2Cl2 solution proceeds in a similar manner as in gas phase with only a slight derivation of activation barrier. Abstract:Half-sandwich zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV) complexes with amidoborane and hydride ligands have been isolated in the stoichiometric reactions of mono(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)metal alkyl and amido derivatives with the amine-boranes NHR2BH3 (R2 = H2, Me2, HtBu). Treatment of the tris(trimethylsilylmethyl) complexes [M(η5-C5Me5)(CH2SiMe3)3] with NH3BH3 (3 equiv) gives the seven-coordinate species [M(η5-C5Me5)(NH2BH3)3] (M = Zr (1), Hf (2)) with three κ2N,H-NH2BH3 ligands. The tris(neophyl) [M(η5-C5Me5)(CH2CMe2Ph)3] or tris(dimethylamido) [M(η5-C5Me5)(NMe2)3] derivatives react with NHMe2BH3 (≥3 equiv) to afford bis(dimethylamidoborane) hydride complexes [M(η5-C5Me5)H(NMe2BH3)2] (M = Zr (3), Hf (4)) via thermally unstable [M(η5-C5Me5)(NMe2BH3)3] species. The reaction of [M(η5-C5Me5)(NMe2)3] and NH2tBuBH3 (≥4 equiv) affords analogous mixed amidoborane hydride derivatives [M(η5-C5Me5)H(NHtBuBH3)(NMe2BH3)] (M = Zr (5), Hf (6)) with κ2N,H-NHtBuBH3 and κ3N,H,H-NMe2BH3 ligands. The addition of NHR2BH3 (≥1 equiv) on the mono(dimethylamido) complexes [M(η5-C5Me5)Cl2(NMe2)] in hexane leads to the precipitation of the ionic compounds [(NHR2)2BH2][{M(η5-C5Me5)Cl2}2(μ-H)3] (R2 = Me2, M = Zr (7), Hf (8); R2 = HtBu, M = Zr (9), Hf (10)). Molecular hydride species [Cl2(η5-C5Me5)M(μ-Cl)(μ-H)2M(η5-C5Me5)Cl(NH2tBu)] (M = Zr (11), Hf (12)) could be isolated from mixtures of complexes [M(η5-C5Me5)Cl2(NMe2)] and lower ratios of NH2tBuBH3. The zirconium complex 11 decomposes in solution to give the mononuclear tert-butylamido derivative [Zr(η5-C5Me5)Cl2(NHtBu)] (13) along with other byproducts.

Abstract:To test the influence of the position and electronic effect of the substituted group on the reaction system, detailed studies on the reactivity of unsaturated 16e half-sandwich complex Cp*Ir(S2C2B10H10) (1) with ortho- and meta-substituted phenyl azides were performed. Reaction of 1 with ortho- and meta-substituted phenyl azides led to the formation of metal complexes in which C-H activation at ortho-position of aryl ring happened to construct a new C-S bond. These complexes were fully characterized by NMR (H-1, B-11, C-13), FTIR, MS, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Basing on the results of the same reaction system with irradiation, the radical mechanism for the formation of these complexes was proposed. Abstract:Here, we describe a series of hafnium complexes with a reduced arene of general formula [K(L)][Hf(Xy‐N 3 N)(arene)] (Xy‐N 3 N = {(3,5‐Me 2 C 6 H 3 )NCH 2 CH 2 } 3 N 3− , L = THF, 18‐crown‐6; arene = C 10 H 8 2− , C 14 H 10 2− ) which mimic the chemistry of hafnium in its formal oxidation state +II. All compounds were obtained upon reduction of the chlorido complex [HfCl(Xy‐N 3 N)(thf)] with two equivalents of potassium naphthalenide or anthracenide. The reducing nature and the basicity of the reduced anthracene ligand were explored in the reaction of benzonitrile and azobenzene, and by deprotonation of tert ‐butylacetylene, respectively. The reduction of benzonitrile provides an initial double nitrile insertion product under kinetic control that rearranges after extrusion of one of the inserted nitriles to a hafnium imido complex as the thermodynamic product. The reduction of azobenzene resulted in a diphenylhydrazido(2−) complex. Treatment of terminal alkynes with the anthracene or diphenylhydrazido(2−) complex led to the selective protonation of the corresponding dianionic ligand. DFT calculations were performed on electronic structure of the reduced anthracene complex as well as the unusual nitrile insertion mechanism.

Abstract:2a,4-Disubstituted 2,2a,3,4-tetrahydro-2-phenyl-1H-azeto[2,1-d][1,5]benzothiazepin-1-ones, as well as 2-substituted 2,3-dihydro-3-phenylacetyl-2-styryl-benzothiazoles and 4a,6-disubstituted 3-benzyl-4a,5-dihydro-2-phenyl-1H,6H-[1,3]oxazino[2,3-d][1,5]benzothiazepin-1-ones, were obtained from the reaction of 2,4-disubstituted 2,3-dihydro-1,5-benzothiazepines with phenylacetyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine. The mechanism for the formation of 4a,5-dihydro-1H,6H-[1,3]oxazino[2,3-d][1,5]benzothiazepin-1-ones, 2,3-dihydro-1,3-oxazin-4-one derivatives, was suggested.

Abstract:The mechanisms of the title reactions between 1-aza-2-azoniaallene cations and carbodiimides in the gas phase have been examined using the Becke-3-parameter-Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) at 6-31++G** level. The theoretical results revealed that the reaction is a domino reaction that comprises two consecutive reactions: an ionic [3+2] cycloaddition reaction between 1-aza-2-azoniallene cation and carbodiimide to yield the cycloadduct 3 and then a [1,2]-shift to yield the thermodynamically more stable adduct 4. Both stepwise and concerted pathways are accessible in the first cycloaddition in the model reaction. The activation barriers of them are almost equivalent. For the [1,2]-shift reactions, both of the electron-withdrawing chlorine substituent and the electron-releasing methyl substituent on the 1-aza-2-azoniaallene cation can facilitate the reaction but have little effects when substituted in the carbodiimide moiety. The model reaction has also been investigated at the QCISD (quadratic configuration interaction using single and double substitutions)/6-31++G** and CCSD(T) (coupled cluster calculations with single and double excitations and a perturbative estimate of triple contributions calculations)/6-31++G** levels as well as by the density functional theory. In addition, solvent effects with the isodensity-surface polarized continuum model are also reported for all the reactions. In solvent dichloromethane, the cycloadducts of all the reactions, except model reaction and reaction d, were obtained from reactants directly as the result of the solvent effect. Abstract:Di- and multinuclear hafnium complexes bridged by ligands have been rarely reported. In this article, a novel 3,5-disubstituted pyrazolate-bridged ligand LH5 with two [N2 N]2- -type chelating side arms was designed and synthesized, which supported a series of dinuclear hafnium complexes. Dinuclear hafnium azides [LHf2 (μ-1,1-N3 )2 (N3 )2 ][Na(THF)4 ] 3 and [LHf2 (μ-1,1-N3 )2 (N3 )2 ][Na(2,2,2-Kryptofix)] 4 were further synthesized and structurally characterized, featuring two sets of terminal and bridging azido ligands like jellyfishes. The reactivity of 3 under reduction conditions was conducted, leading to a formation of a tetranuclear hafnium imido complex [L1 Hf2 (μ1 -NH)(N3 ){μ2 -K}]2 5. DFT calculations revealed that the mixed imido azide 5 was generated via an intramolecular C-H insertion from a putative dinuclear HfIV -nitridyl intermediate.

Abstract:Direct insertion of 1 equiv of CyN═C═NCy (1; Cy = cyclohexyl) into the Zr–NMe2 bonds in (Me2N)3Zr[N(SiMe3)2] (2) and (Me2N)3Zr[Si(SiMe3)3] (3) gave exclusively [CyNC(NMe2)NCy]Zr(NMe2)2[N(SiMe3)2] (5) and [CyNC(NMe2)NCy]Zr(NMe2)2[Si(SiMe3)3] (6), respectively. The reaction between 2 and guanidine CyNHC(NMe2)═NCy (9) gave 5 and HNMe2 through the preferred cleavage of a Zr–NMe2 bond in 2. The reaction between 3 and 9 led to the preferred cleavage of the Zr–Si(SiMe3)3 bond in 3, yielding [CyNC(NMe2)NCy]Zr(NMe2)3 (7) and HSi(SiMe3)3 and, upon cleavage of another Zr–NMe2 bond, forming [CyNC(NMe2)NCy]2Zr(NMe2)2 (8). The aminolysis of Zr(NMe2)4 (4) by 9 first afforded 7 and then 8. The structures of 5, 6, and 9 have been determined by X-ray diffraction.
