Abstract:Electrospun nanofiber membranes exhibit efficient oil-water separation performance, owing to their fine and controllable fiber diameters. However, the three-dimensional dense stacking of nanofibers leads to low porosity, decreasing the oil flux in oil-water separation. Here, a composite nanofiber membrane with a dual-scale structure was designed to achieve a high oil-water separation efficiency and high oil flux simultaneously. In detail, a dense polyurethane/fluorinated polyurethanes (PAN-FPU) nanofiber layer with a fine fiber diameter (150 nm) and a small pore size (3-4 mu m) was combined with a fluffy polysulfone (PSF) nanofiber layer with a coarse diameter (1200 nm) and a large pore size (8-9 mu m). Using the PAN-FPU nanofiber layer as the inlet layer, modular electrospinning equipment was used to prepare dual-scale nanofiber membranes with a high oil-water separation efficiency and high flux in one step. When the fiber ratio of PAN-FPU/PSF was 1:2, the resulting composite nanofiber film could achieve a separation efficiency of 99.58% and an oil flux of 4630 L m(-2) h(-1) for an oil-water mixture. For a water-in-oil emulsion, the separation efficiency and oil flux reached 99.37% and 1124 L m(-2) h(-1), respectively. In addition, the separation efficiency and flux of the biscale nanofiber membrane were simulated by establishing a fluid model, and the simulation results confirmed that the fiber membrane had excellent separation performance. Dual-scale composite nanofiber membranes have potential applications in the field of oily wastewater treatment and locomotive filters compared with monolayer membranes.

Abstract:The efficient treatment of oil-water emulsions under acidic condition remains a widespread concern. Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer with hyperbranched structures and a large amount of primary and tertiary amino groups has exhibited advantages to solve this issue. Here, a novel poly(vinylidene fluoride)-graft-(SiO2 nanoparticles and PAMAM dendrimers) (PVDF-g-SiO2 NPs/PAMAM) membrane was fabricated using a surface-grafting strategy. SiO2 NPs were immobilized on PVDF-g-poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) membranes for improving the surface roughness, and PAMAM dendrimers were further immobilized on the membrane surface by interfacial polymerization (IP) for improving the surface energy. The obtained membrane demonstrated a water contact angle and a stable underwater-oil contact angle of 0 degrees and >150 degrees, respectively. These characteristics endowed the membrane with excellent water permeability [>3100 L/(m(2).h) at 0.9 bar] and separation efficiency (>99%) during oil-water separation. Furthermore, the PAMAM chain will extend from a collapsed state into a fully extension state because of the protonation of amine groups under acidic condition, thus achieving a low underwater oil-adhesion property, fouling resistance, desirable stability, and recyclability (over 12 cycles) during usage. This work shows a promising prospect for the treatment of corrosive emulsions under acidic condition.

Abstract:In this study, novel stellate poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/polyethersulfone (PES) microsphere-nanofiber membrane with special wettability was successfully prepared via electrospinning technique. The structure properties are confirmed with SEM, FTIR, TG-DTG and EDS, which indicated that the PES/PVDF composite nanofibers was successfully fabricated. Moreover, the applications of the PES/PVDF membranes as a filter membrane for oil/water separation, we could find that the obtained PES/PVDF membranes showed excellent performance in separation of oil (transform oil)/water mixture. Preparation of an electrospun tubular PU/GE nanofiber membrane for high flux oil/water separation

Abstract:A simple, tubular structure polyurethane/graphene (PU/GE) nanofiber membrane for continuous oil/water separation was prepared using the following strategies: a polyester (PET) fiber braided tube was used for reinforcement, stearic acid (SA) was used to assist GE dispersion, and a PU solution containing GE was used to cover the outer layer of the PET fiber braided tube using the electrospinning method. Specifically, the PU/GE nanofiber membrane has a multi-branched structure. The tubular braid reinforced (TBR) PU/GE nanofiber membrane was characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), confocal scanning microscopy (CSM) and capillary flow porometry. The contact angle results showed that the TBR PU/GE nanofiber membrane had good hydrophobic and lipophilic properties. The obtained membranes had good oil/water selectivity for oil-water separation (with a separation efficiency up to 99%). In addition, the optimized membrane can be effectively employed to separate a surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsion with a separation efficiency up to 90% and a high permeate flux (137.5 L m-2 h-1). Our TBR PU/GE nanofiber membrane is therefore a desirable material for the highly efficient separation of water-in-oil emulsions, and shows broad application prospects in the field of oil/water separation.
One-step electrospinning PVDF/PVP-TiO2 hydrophilic nanofiber membrane with strong oil-water separation and anti-fouling property

Abstract:With the widespread concern of oily wastewater discharge and environmental protection, the efficient electrospun nanofiber membrane has fascinated strenuous attention owes to its uniform pore distribution and adjustable wettability. However, the common modification methods of nanofiber membranes, such as surface coating and grafting, have complicated procedures and low grafting rate, which limits their wide application in practical applications. Hence, a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and inorganic titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles blend nanofiber membrane was prepared by convenient one-step electrostatic spinning. The existence of PVDF provides certain strength and chemical resistance property, and the PVP benefits the loading of TiO2 NPs and improves the hydrophilicity as well as mechanical strength of the membrane. The introduction of these three components maltes the porous nanofiber membrane have a hierarchical rough structure, and appear hydrophilic in the air and oleophobic under water. The obtained membrane thus shows excellent separation efficiency (98.4%) for different emulsions, desirable antifouling property with a high flux recovery rate (FRR 95.68%) and a low total fouling ratio (15.18%) after several cycles. This strategy will be a facile and promising method of preparing reusable and functional separation membranes.
A novel polyurethane-polydimethylsiloxane/polylactic acid electrospinning fiber membrane for oil/water separation

Abstract:To meet the demand for oil/water separation, a membrane is characterized by high flux and separation efficiency, recyclability, and good mechanical stability. Recently, controlled ring-opening copolymerization involving epoxides represents a valuable strategy for synthesizing polyurethane with a unique surface, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. In this work, a novel polyurethane- polydimethylsiloxane (PU-PDMS) polymer is synthesized under mild conditions to endow electrospinning polylactic acid (PLLA) with superhydrophobicity. PU-PDMS/PLLA fiber membrane possessed good mechanics performance. At 15 wt% of PU-PDMS, the tensile strength and elongation at break of blending fiber membrane are 2.02 ± 0.20 MPa and 35.65 ± 2.0 %, respectively. Its water contact angle reaches 155°, showing excellent oil/water separation properties. The permeation flux and the separation efficiency are individually 2531 ± 69 L m −2 h −1 and 99.4 ± 1 %. Meanwhile, the PU-PDMS/PLLA fiber membrane exhibits high stability and durability. So this is a simple, effective, and promising method for environmental protection and low energy consumption.

Abstract:Marinepollution andindustrial wastewater have caused serious environmental pollution, thereby resulting into an alarming damage to public health in the past decades, hence the high demand for, cost effective, energy-efficient oil-water separation technologies for the removal of oil contaminants from such water. Herein, we report a facile method to fabricate superhydrophobic/superoleophilic membrane by immersing a polyimide (PI)-based nanofibrous membrane into a water/ethanol/ammonia/dopamine mixture, followed by modification with 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecanethiol (PFDT). The PI-based membrane exhibited water contact angle (WCA) above 153°, while the oil contact angle (OCA) approached 0°, thereby promoting an outstanding chemical stability which sustained its superhydrophobicity when immersed in aqueous solutions at different pH values. Additionally, the PI-based membrane possesses ultrahigh flux, high separation efficiency and good reusability in oil-water separation. The aforementioned properties, as well as the easily scale-up preparation process ensure that this promising as-fabricated membrane can be applied for practical environmental applications including treatment of oily wastewater and oil spillage clean-up.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThe oil–water separation technologies of removing oil pollutants from water in an efficient and economical way is a challenge. The current methods used for oil–water separation suffer many shortcomings, including a low separation efficiency, complex separation equipment, high operation costs, and secondary pollution. In this study, we fabricated a highly flexible, high‐intensity, quite stable superhydrophobic and superoleophilic polyimide (PI) nanofibrous membranes, which are much more efficient and cost efficient for oil–water separation by modifying the membranes with a polydopamine (PDA) solution and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) dispersion. The fabricated membrane (PDA–PTFE–PI) possesses both the high tensile stress of PI and the superhydrophobic and superlipophilic properties of the PDA–PTFE coating. The modified membrane could separate various oil–water mixtures efficiently at a high flux (6000 L·m−2·h−1) and an extremely high efficiency (>99%). Furthermore, even when the membrane was under an extremely hostile environment (with an ultrahigh temperature, strong acidity, or strong basicity), it still remained quickly stable with a good separation efficiency and recyclability after 10 cycles. Abstract:Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/ZnO composite fiber membranes were prepared by electrospinning, and PTFE/ZnO composite films were obtained after removing PVA. Considering that the spinning solution has good spinning performance, the PTFE/ZnO composite film has good flexibility and durability. The zinc oxide powder is evenly fixed on the surface of PTFE fibers, so that the film’s flexibility will not be affected during high-temperature calcination. The scanning electron micrograph shows that the morphology of the film is similar to the surface of the lotus leaf. The properties of PTFE/ZnO composite films were investigated by hydrophobic angle test and oil–water separation experiments. Results show that the PTFE/ZnO composite film has good hydrophobicity and oil–water separation performance. With the decrease in ZnO, the contact angle of the PTFE/ZnO composite film increased, and the oil–water separation performance improved. When the amount of ZnO added was 0.025 g, the contact angle was 160.9°, and the oil–water separation performance was the best.

Abstract:Novel poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) hollow fiber membranes were successfully fabricated by electrospinning, with ultrafine fibrous PTFE membranes as separation layers, while a porous glassfiber braided tube served as the supporting matrix. During this process, PTFE/poly(vinylalcohol) (PVA) ultrafine fibrous membranes were electrospun while covering the porous glassfiber braided tube; then, the nascent PTFE/PVA hollow fiber membrane was obtained. In the following sintering process, the spinning carrier PVA decomposed; meanwhile, the ultrafine fibrous PTFE membrane shrank inward so as to further integrate with the supporting matrix. Therefore, the ultrafine fibrous PTFE membranes had excellent interface bonding strength with the supporting matrix. Moreover, the obtained ultrafine fibrous PTFE hollow fiber membrane exhibited superior performances in terms of strong hydrophobicity (CA > 140°), high porosity (>70%), and sharp pore size distribution. The comprehensive properties indicated that the ultrafine fibrous PTFE hollow fiber membranes could have potentially useful applications in membrane contactors (MC), especially membrane distillation (MD) in harsh water environments.

Abstract:Superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membranes are emerging materials for effective oil/water separation. In this paper, an electrospun nanofibrous (ENF) membrane with hierarchical structures was prepared by the construction of polydopamine nanoclusters onto a cross-linked polyacrylonitrile/hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (PAN/HPEI/PDA) ENF membrane. This hierarchical structure endows the membrane with superhydrophilicity with a low water contact angle of 0°, and underwater superoleophobicity with a high oil contact angle of 162°. This membrane can effectively separate oil/water emulsions with a high permeate flux (~ 1600Lm−2 h−1) and high oil rejection (~ 98.5%), solely driven by gravity. Furthermore, the membrane also showed an excellent antifouling ability for oil droplets and recyclability (>10 cycles), making it a promising candidate for treatment of oily wastewater.

Abstract:In recent years, both the increasing frequency of oil spill accidents and the urgency to deal seriously with industrial oil-polluted water, encouraged material scientists to design highly efficient, cost effective oil-water separation technologies. We report on electrospun nanofibrous membranes which are composed of core-sheath structured cellulose-acetate (CA)-polyimide (PI) nanofibers. On the surface of the CA-PI fibers a fluorinated polybenzoxazine (F-PBZ) functional layer, in which silica nanoparticles (SNPs) were incorporated, has been applied. Compared with F-PBZ/SNP modified CA fibers reported before for the separation of oil from water, the PI-core of the core-shell F-PBZ/SNP/CA-PI fibers makes the membranes much stronger, being a significant asset in their use. Nanofibrous membranes with a tensile strength higher than 200 MPa, a high water contact angle of 160 degrees and an extremely low oil contact angle of 0 degrees were obtained. F-PBZ/SNP/CA-PI membranes seemed very suitable for gravity-driven oil-water separation as fast and efficient separation (>99%) of oil from water was achieved for various oil-water mixtures. The designed core-sheath structured electrospun nanofibrous membranes may become interesting materials for the treatment of industrial oil-polluted water.

Abstract:In recent years, efficient, cost effective oil-water separation technologies are highly desired due to frequent oil spill accidents. To design fibrous membranes for efficient oil-water separation, 'flexible' polyamide acid (PAA), being polyamide acid with ether linkages in the backbone, and 'heavily' fluorinated polybenzoxazine (F-PB) were synthesized. Cellulose acetate (CA) and PM were co-axially electrospun; the PAA core was then imidizated at high temperature to obtain core/shell structured CA/polyimide (PI) electrospun fibrous membranes; subsequently the surface of the fibers was modified with F-PB, in the presence or in absence of silica nanoparticles (SNPs). The mechanical strength, surface wettability, chemical and thermal stability, and oil-water separation potential of thus obtained PI/CA fibrous membranes were evaluated. The membranes show a much higher critical tensile stress (130 MPa) and critical tensile strain (52%), when compared with CA fibrous membranes. Due to the use of the 'heavily' fluorinated polybenzoxazine, the membranes are superhydrophobic with a water contact angle of 162 degrees and an oil contact angle which approaches 0 degrees. Interestingly, the newly designed PI/CA/F-PB-1/SNP-4 membranes can effectively separate various oil-water mixtures, solely driven by gravity, with a high flux (3106.2 +/- 100 L m(-2) h(-1)) and a high separation efficiency (>99%) and thus possess great potential for oil-water separation. A Novel High-Durability Oxidized Poly (arylene Sulfide Sulfone) Electrospun Nanofibrous Membrane for Direct Water-Oil Separation

Abstract:Water-oil separation complicated fabrication procedures and low stability seriously hindered the separation membrane from using in the practical water-oil application. Here we present a novel oxidized poly (arylene sulfide sulfone) (O-PASS) nanofibrous membrane using simple electrospinning technology, which has high durability and is directly applied to water-oil separation. The results of scanning electron microscopy and capillary flow porometer show that the fiber diameters of membranes were 378 +/- 37 nm and the average pore sizes were 1.81 +/- 0.22 i.irn with narrow distribution. Furthermore, excellent hydrophobicity (139.6(.)) oleophilic (0(.)), good oil adsorption capacity (1 5 0), and high flux (623.1 L.m(-2).h(-1)) render O-PASS nanofibrous membrane highly effective separation of water-oil. The separation efficiency of the O-PASS nanofibrous membrane is 99%. More importantly, this membrane could endure extremely harsh environments, such as strong acid (aqua regia), strong alkali (0.1 M sodium hydroxide solution), strong polarity solvent (1, 3-Dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone) for 90 days and high temperature (120 degrees C) for 12 h. Finally, the O-PASS nanofibrous membrane exhibits good mechanical property reaching 5.51 MPa. This study provided good chemical resistant and hydrophobic membrane that could be directly used in harsh environment for efficacious water-oil separation.

Abstract:Membrane separation is one of the most widely used methods for water purification, but membrane fouling is a stumbling block that must be overcome for its further promotion and application. In this work, a self-cleaning PVDF-based hybrid nanofiber membrane with core-sheath structure were constructed via electrospinning and in-situ synthesis, using polyvinylidene fluoride/polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVDF-PVP) electrospun nanofibers as skeleton cores and in-situ synthesis of Z-scheme TiO 2 /MIL-100(Fe) heterojunctions as photocatalytic sheaths. The hybrid membrane exhibited excellent superhydrophilicity (water contact angle of 0°) and underwater superoleophobicity (underwater oil contact angle of 161.4°) with high permeate fluxes and superior separation efficiencies (more than 99.5%) for various oil/water emulsions. Furthermore, the Z-scheme TiO 2 /MIL-100(Fe) heterojunctions anchored on the nanofibers possessed robust photocatalytic activity with the removal efficiency of dyes up to 99.9% under simulated sunlight. More importantly, the membrane has excellent recyclability due to its outstanding anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties. Therefore, the hybrid membrane has attractive potential application in wastewater purification.

Here, a facile method to fabricate superhydrophobic/superoleophilic membranes based on a fluorine-free system by the combination of electrospun polyimide (PI) nanofibers and a novel in-situ polymerized polybenzoxazine (PBZ) functional containing silica nanoparticles (SNP) is proposed. The resultant PI-based membrane has outstanding superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity with water and oil contact angles above 154° and approaches 0 °, respectively. Simultaneously, the membrane possesses extraordinary chemical and thermal stability and high salt tolerance. Furthermore, the membrane presents high separation efficiency (above 99%) and high-flux (4798 L m−2 h−1) as well as good reusability and oil content in the filtrate below 5 ppm for separation of various oil/water mixture. Significantly, these studies offer a simple yet cost-effective technique to fabricate superhydrophobic/superoleophilic membranes and have potential use for oily wastewater treatment and oil spill clean-up.

Abstract:In dealing with the oil–water separation process, improving the oil–water selectivity of the membrane surface and increasing the porosity within the membrane are effective means to achieve durable and efficient oil–water separation. Therefore, polystyrene/polyacrylonitrile‐polyvinylidene fluoride/Polydimethylsiloxane Fe3O4 nanoparticles (PS/PAN‐PVDF/PDMS@Fe3O4) composite membranes with superhydrophobicity and lipophilicity were prepared by electrospinning technique. By controlling the filling concentration of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, a stable superhydrophobic and lipophilic rough structure was constructed, and micro–nano multilayer rough voids existed inside the membrane. The results showed that the composite fiber membrane exhibited exceptional superhydrophobicity (156.2°), thermal stability (338°C), mechanical properties (tensile strength of 3.0 MPa, elongation of 33.9%), and oil adsorption capacity (30–100 g/g). Moreover, even under corrosive environments, this composite fiber membrane maintained its superhydrophobic properties (above 152°) and achieved high oil–water separation efficiency (above 97%). Remarkably, after 40 cycles, the composite membrane could sustain a separation flux of 5000 L m−2 h−1. Consequently, the composite fiber membrane manufactured using this strategy exhibits promising potential for applications in oil–water separation.

Abstract:Schematic diagram of oil‐water separation mechanism. To address the escalating issue of oily wastewater, separation membranes with special wettability on the surface are widely used in oil–water separation. The development of separation membranes with not only stable separation flux but also anti‐fouling properties is an urgent problem. Therefore, polystyrene/polyacrylonitrile‐polyvinylidene fluoride/polydimethylsiloxane‐titanium dioxide nanoparticle (PS/PAN‐PVDF/PDMS@TiO2) composite membranes with superhydrophobicity and lipophilicity were prepared by electrospinning technique. By changing the doping amount of TiO2 nanoparticles, the multilevel rough structure was constructed on the surface, and the transformation of the Ti–O–C chemical bond to the Si–O–Ti chemical bond was realized inside the composite membrane. The results showed that the composite membrane had excellent superhydrophobicity (154.9°) and mechanical properties (tensile strength of 3.54 MPa, elongation of 60.95%). The membrane can absorb ultraviolet light and exhibits enhanced resistance to fouling when exposed to visible‐UV light. Additionally, the composite membrane demonstrates an adsorption capacity of 30–100 g/g for a wide range of oils. In corrosive environments, the composite membrane maintains superhydrophobicity (above 150°) and achieves high oil–water separation efficiency (97%). After 40 cycles, the separation flux of 6000 L.h−1 m−2 can be maintained. Hence, superhydrophobic oleophilic composite membranes with a stable separation flux and resistance to fouling can be employed in the field of oil–water separation. Highlights PS/PAN‐PVDF/PDMS@TiO2 composite membrane with multilevel rough structure. PS/PAN‐PVDF/PDMS@TiO2 composite membrane with excellent UV absorption and self‐cleaning ability. PS/PAN‐PVDF/PDMS@TiO2 composite membrane with stable oil–water separation efficiency in harsh environments.
