Abstract:Three model ceria catalysts, which are monocrystalline CeO2 nanocubes, polycrystalline CeO2 nanoparticles, and polycrystalline CeO2 spindles, were synthesized and analyzed with isothermal soot oxidation, H-2-TPR, and Raman spectroscopy. The results suggest that the initial activity of the catalyst is determined by the number of catalyst-soot contact points rather than the catalyst surface area, while the catalyst stability is closely related to the concentration of surface oxygen vacancies. Excessive surface oxygen vacancies may inhibit the regeneration of highly active O-2(-) and lead to catalyst deactivation during reaction. After impregnation with Ag, O- can be readily regenerated and transformed to O-2(-), resulting in a 10-fold increase in soot oxidation activity over Ag/CeO2. Among these catalysts, Ag supported on nanocubic CeO2 exhibits good availability of O-2(-) and therefore high catalytic activity and stability, and is thus considered a promising catalyst for application in gasoline particulate filters. Ozone Activated Ag/CeO2 Catalysts for Soot Combustion: the Surface and Structural Influences

Abstract:In this work, O-3 activation was performed at 200 degrees C over two types of Ag/CeO2 catalysts with nanocube- and nanorod-like morphologies, respectively. The O-3-indcued surface O-x(-) species ("O-x(-) injection") accelerated soot combustion over both catalysts temporarily. In contrast, the depletion of CeO2 surface oxygen vacancies (Ce3+-VO-s) caused by ozonization conferred to long-term activation. Specifically, the ozonized nanocubic Ag/CeO2 with low initial Ce3+ content not only benefited more from the "O-x(-) injection", but also exhibited good redox stability and high practical potential. Therefore, the combination of this catalyst with O-3 activation may result in efficient soot elimination in the particulate filters of vehicles.
Surface Adsorbed and Lattice Oxygen Activated by the CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 Interface for Enhancive Catalytic Soot Combustion: Experimental and Theoretical Investigations

Abstract:Metal oxide-oxide interface on supported catalyst has been rarely studied due to the complex interfacial structure and synthetic challenge. Herein, different Ag-supported CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 samples with various covered-state of CeO 2 were prepared for catalytic soot oxidation. In comparison, catalytic activity was significantly improved by grafting CeO 2 on Co 3 O 4 , in which the best performing Ag/CoCe-2 exhibited remarkable catalytic performance towards soot oxidation with a T 50 of 290.5°C under 10% O 2 /N 2 . Catalyst characterization investigated by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), quasi in-situ X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), in-situ Raman, etc. revealed that this outstanding promotion in catalytic activity can be principally ascribed to the formation of the CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 interface. An appropriate CeO 2 dosage maximized the contact and interaction between Co 3 O 4 and CeO 2 , resulting in the largest CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 interface featured with abundant generated superoxide species and activated surface lattice oxygen. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also carried out for the oxygen vacancy formation energy, Gibbs free energy, etc. In presence of the CeO 2 /Co 3 O 4 interface, a charge density redistribution around the adsorbed reactants at oxygen vacancies could be formed, owing to the efficient charge transfer enhanced by the electron-appealing effect. The change in electronic structure favored reducing the oxygen vacancy formation energy and boosting the lattice oxygen activation induced by the hybridized Co-O-Ce bonds, finally lowering the adsorption and activation barriers for reactive species and accelerating the reaction kinetics.

Abstract:Shape-controlled CeO2 nano-rods (CeO2-R), CeO2 nano-cubes (CeO2-C) and CeO2 nano-octahedrons (CeO2-O) were prepared as support of Ag/CeO2 for soot combustion. Ag/CeO2-C is more active than Ag/CeO2-R and Ag/CeO2-O, even with the presence of water, whose TOF value is 7.7, 11.4 times of Ag/CeO2-R and Ag/CeO2-O, respectively. The chemical state of Ag and the ability in oxygen activation is controlled by the support morphology through the interaction between Ag and CeO2. The weak interaction makes Ag in form of metallic state on Ag/CeO2-C which has better contact extent with soot than Ag oxides. Meanwhile, a high concentration of bulk oxygen vacancies on Ag/CeO2-C is also formed which efficiently provide active oxygen species by oxygen reverse spillover. It also explores a new pathway boosting soot combustion. As for CeO2-R and CeO2-O, although the introduced Ag improves the surface reducibility on CeO2, similar oxygen desorption behavior with the introduction of Ag reveals the unchanged way in oxygen activation and reaction pathway in soot combustion.

Abstract:Ceria (CeO2) catalysts doped with different metal ions were prepared by sol-gel or impregnation methods, and their catalytic activity for soot combustion was evaluated by thermogravimetry. Temperature-programmed reduction was used to investigate the influence of their redox properties on soot combustion performance. The results indicate that the oxidation temperature of soot can be significantly reduced using catalysts containing transition metals, which provide increased surface and lattice oxygen compared with undoped CeO2. The ability of each catalyst to deliver active oxygen at low temperature (200-400 degrees C) plays an important role in determining catalytic performance. However, incorporation of structure promoter, alkali metals, and alkaline earth metals increase the delivery of active oxygen only at moderate temperature (above 400 degrees C), which accelerate the combustion rate of soot. Migration Roles of Different Oxygen Species over Cu/CeO2 for Propane and Soot Combustion

Abstract:Determining the migration rules of oxygen species in catalytic combustion, especially for catalysts composed of transition metal oxides, is essential yet challenging. This study hydrothermally synthesized nanosphere-structured cerium dioxide (CeO2) and its copper-loaded catalysts (Cu/CeO2) to identify the distinct functions of superficial oxygen species (O) and lattice oxygen (O2–). The presence of Cu-Ce solid solution at the Cu/CeO2 interface lowered the apparent activation energy for the catalytic combustion of propane and soot. The catalytic combustion of propane followed the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism, with O2– serving as the dominant reactive phase while O played a subordinate role. The solid–solid reaction between soot and superficial oxygen of the catalyst was responsible for catalyzed soot combustion. The O species produced by surface defective sites exhibited higher activity than O2–, which drained easily at the beginning of the reactions. The isotopic oxygen exchange tests revealed the mechanism of metal oxide (CuO/CeO2) interactions for active oxygen species migration, with the results demonstrating the solid solution at the phase interface as portholes for oxygen migration, thus increasing oxygen mobility between the gaseous phase and the surface by lowering the migration activation energy. In situ, infrared results showed that the reaction path of soot catalytic combustion was single, without any intermediate production formation, compared to multiple paths in the propane oxidation process. This study provided an easily implemented and widely applicable method, which deepens our understanding of the characterization of the function and migration of predominant oxygen species in diverse combustion reactions involving oxide-based catalysts. Additionally, this study clarified differences and similarities between the reaction mechanisms of solid–solid and solid–gas catalysis.

Abstract:Here we reported the effect of the Cu-Mn-Ce-SiO2 (CMC-SiO2) interaction on the physical and chemical aspects of the catalytic combustion of toluene by adjusting the loading amount of the CMC mixed oxide on SiO2.Notably,the CMC/KIT-6 catalyst with low CMC loading performed poorly with an obvious deactivation,owing to the inhibition of the metal oxides active sites,while the activity recovered after washing away some SiO2.The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR),N2 adsorption,and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM).Although there is no change in crystal structure after loading on SiO2,active oxygen species immigrate from lattice to surface for SiO2 surface rich in hydroxyl groups and having high dispersion of CMC,leading to deactivation of the CMC catalyst.However,it is worth mentioning that the lattice oxygen played a key role in catalytic combustion.The activity of the CMC catalyst recovered when the quantity of lattice oxygen increased upon removing surface-OH groups by calcination or removing some SiO2 by alkali washing.
Model Ag/CeO2 catalysts for soot combustion: Roles of silver species and catalyst stability

Abstract:Ag/CeO2 has been regarded as a promising recipe for soot catalytic combustion in gasoline particulate filters, while lots of information about its reaction mechanism and practicability is yet missing. In this work, the reducibility and activity of three Ag/CeO2 model catalysts with different types of silver species (Agn+ nanoclusters, metallic Ag nanoclusters and metallic Ag nanoparticles) supporting on CeO2 nanorods were studied. It was suggested that silver facilitated the generation of Oxn- via Ag+-(Ce3+-VO)-induced O2 activation or ceria bulk-to-surface oxygen migration, both of which resulted in boosted soot combustion. From a practical point of view, the thermal ageing-induced silver sintering could be alleviated by the defective sites on CeO2, though certain degree of catalyst deactivation was still inevitable.

Abstract:Though the catalytic oxidation of CO, NO and soot over CeO2 could be understood within a similar Mars van Krevelen-type mechanism, these reactions were likely to be driven by different active phases. In this work, several CeO2 and Ag/CeO2 nanorods with different contents of surface oxygen vacancies (Vo-s) and active oxygen species (O-x(-)) were designed as model catalysts. Their catalytic performance indicated that, CO oxidation was determined by pre-existing ceria Vo-s, while Cc participated in NO and soot oxidation directly. Besides, by loading silver onto the high-temperature aged CeO2 nanorods, Ag/CeO2 catalysts with high availability of ceria lattice oxygen were obtained, whose low-temperature oxidation activity was proven comparable to that of the platinum catalysts. In this sense, the model designing in this work not only provided methods to find out proper reactivity descriptors, but also conferred low-cost catalysts with high practical potential. Strong Ru-CeO2 interaction boosts catalytic activity and stability of Ru supported on CeO2 nanocube for soot oxidation

Abstract:Cerium oxide based catalysts are active for soot oxidation, while serious catalyst deactivation feasibly occurs due to thermal sintering. In this study, Ru and Ag supported on CeO2 were prepared and their catalytic performances as well as thermal durability for soot oxidation were evaluated. Characterization results show that thermal treatment at 800 degrees C leads to substantial crystalline growth of CeO2 and Ag particles in Ag/CeO2 . In contrast, crystalline growth of CeO2 is remarkably alleviated and high dispersion of Ru particles is effectively maintained on Ru/CeO2 owing to the formation of Ru-O-Ce bonds. As a result, catalyst recycling and thermal pretreatment at 800 degrees C lead to remarkably catalyst deactivation of CeO2 and Ag/CeO2 , but slightly declined activity on Ru/CeO2 . The combination of experiments and DFT calculations clearly indicates that the strong interactions between Ru and CeO2 account for the high catalytic activity and strong thermal duration of Ru/CeO2 for soot oxidation. Study of Ag Promoted Fe2O3@CeO2 As Superior Soot Oxidation Catalysts: the Role of Fe2O3 Crystal Plane and Tandem Oxygen Delivery

Abstract:In this work, model alpha-Fe2O3 catalysts with different morphologies were synthesized to investigate crystal plane effects on soot oxidation. The results revealed that the electron-rich state of Fe2O3 {113} planes conferred them more surface O-x(-) and thus better catalytic performance than the {014} and {012} planes. Surface grafting of a polycrystalline CeO2 layer onto Fe2O3 gave rise to Fe2O3@CeO2 catalysts with drastically increased oxygen utilization. More importantly, by loading Ag nano-particles on the surface of Fe2O3@CeO2, a tandem oxygen delivery route was opened, resulting in strong O-x(-) generation/regeneration ability and superior low temperature soot oxidation activity. These Ag/Fe2O3@CeO2 catalysts overwhelmed the nano-cubic Ag/CeO2 in both catalyst cost and activity, making them very promising for application in catalyzed gasoline particulate filters (CGPFs).

Abstract:CeO2, Ce2oZr1 and Ce10Zr1 mixed oxides with uniform nanocubic morphology and varied amounts of surface oxygen vacancies were synthesized to study the influence of surface oxygen vacancies on soot catalytic oxidation in a low concentration of gaseous O-2. It is presented that excessive surface oxygen vacancies may lead to low soot oxidation activity and catalyst deactivation during the reaction. H-2-TPR results indicate that the doping of Zr does not decrease the amount of surface redox sites. Instead, it induces the formation of surface capping oxygen (O2-) rather than the highly active O-x(-) species, which hereby affects the catalyst behavior significantly. These point out that a ceria-based catalyst should not contain too many surface oxygen vacancies when designing for the application in gasoline particulate filters. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Synergistic effect of Cu on a Ag-loaded CeO2 catalyst for soot oxidation with improved generation of active oxygen species and reducibility

Abstract:In this work, the promoting effects of Cu on Ag-loaded CeO2 catalysts on soot oxidation were investigated through a series of Cu-incorporated catalysts (AgCu(x)Ce) with various amounts of Cu. Ag particles were highly dispersed over Cu(x)Ce mixed oxide, and AgCu(x)Ce catalysts presented improved activity in comparison to Ag/CeO2. Raman spectra and H2-TPR showed that the complex effects of the Ag-CeO2 and CuO-CeO2 interactions enhanced the ability to generate highly active superoxide (O2−) and greatly improved the reducibility of AgCu(x)Ce catalysts. The amount of Cu affected degrees of both the Ag-CeO2 and CuO-CeO2 interactions, and consequently, the ratio of active oxygen species (Oxn−) and the reducibility of the catalysts varied. AgCu(0.4)Ce with adequate surface oxygen vacancies promoted the generation of O2−, and the promoting effects enhanced the reducibility, resulting in greatly improved activity. It is suggested that introduction of Cu to Ag/CeO2 significantly improves the activity of the catalyst and that the optimized Cu content induces positive interrelations, whereas excessive Cu hinders the improvement in catalytic performance due to decreased synergistic effects between the Ag-CeO2 and CuO-CeO2 interactions.

Abstract:CeO2–K catalysts supported on porous alumina substrate have been prepared by using a novel water-immiscible solvent. The advantage of this method is to load the catalyst onto the filter surface by one-time coating and prevent depositing the catalyst into the porous structure of support materials. The catalytic activities of the supported catalysts were evaluated by TPR system and the results showed that the pure CeO2 displayed a poor catalytic activity for soot oxidation, while the addition of K element into CeO2 would result in the formation of CeO2–K solid solution and significant enhancement of catalytic activity. Nevertheless, the variation of K content had a limited effect on soot ignition temperature. The catalyst with a Ce:K molar ratio of 1:2 exhibited an ignition temperature of about 330°C and the oxidation rates of about 0.16 and 0.28mgmin−1cm−2 at temperatures of 370 and 390°C, respectively.
Selective Oxidation of Soot over Cu Doped Ceria/ceria–zirconia Catalysts

Abstract:Copper doped ceria and ceria–zirconia mixed oxides were prepared using the citric acid sol–gel method. The temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO) results showed that the Cu modification helped to improve the activity and selectivity of ceria and ceria–zirconia for soot catalytic oxidation. The CO-TPR results showed that Cu–Ce had a better reducibility than pure ceria at low temperatures. After ageing at 800°C for 20h in flow air, CuO–CeO2 showed the maximum soot oxidation rate at 378 and 519°C under tight and loose contact conditions, respectively, achieving a nearly 100% selectivity to CO2 production. This effect may be attributed to the existence of well dispersed copper oxide species strongly interacting with the ceria surface, which may decrease the activation energy of soot oxidation. A conceivable mechanism of this synergetic effect was proposed.
Oxygen vacancies and alkaline metal boost CeO2 catalyst for enhanced soot combustion activity: A first-principles evidence

Abstract:The molecular-level oxidation mechanism of graphene-type soot was systematically explored at the soot/CeO2(111) interface with and without oxygen vacancies (Ovac) by first-principles calculations. It was found to follow the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism on stoichiometric CeO2(111), but the low reactivity of lattice oxygen (Olat) results in a limited activity for oxidizing the most-inert edge-CH. By contrast, the molecular O2 species trapped by Ovac on reduced CeO2(111) exhibits a much superior reactivity to eliminate edge-CH, which can trigger subsequent inner-C oxidation to proceed easily. These results explicitly evidence the boosting role of Ovac and clarify the reduced CeO2, rather than the stoichiometric one, playing a more critical role for soot combustion in reality. Notably, increasing the initial surface Ovac concentration or decreasing Ovac formation energy to activate Olat are unambiguously proposed as effective optimization strategies for CeO2. Moreover, a long puzzle on the promotor effects of alkaline K+ on CeO2 was rationalized.

Abstract:The Cu- and Mn-doped ceria were prepared using the citric acid sol–gel method. The structural and redox properties of the mixed oxides were investigated by means of XRD, BET, O2-TPD, CO-TPR and CO reduction under isothermal conditions. TPO tests were performed to evaluate the catalytic activity for soot oxidation. The results showed that Mnx+ cations entered into the ceria lattice to form solid solutions, which increased the amount of oxygen vacancies and promoted surface oxygen chemisorption. CuxO clusters were more likely to be dispersed on the surface of ceria particles. The interaction between copper and cerium greatly enhanced the rapid release of lattice oxygen of the oxides in the reducing atmosphere. These two mixed oxides showed improved catalytic activities and selectivities to CO2 for soot oxidation compared with pure ceria. The order of activities under different contact conditions was believed to be related to active oxygen species released by the catalysts.
A Comparative Study on Ce–Pr and Ce–Mn Mixed Oxide Catalysts Toward Soot Catalytic Combustion

Abstract:CePr and CeMn mixed oxide catalysts were synthesized by inserting Pr and Mn atoms into CeO2. Catalytic performance on soot combustion was investigated, and several characterizations were carried out using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis, H-2 temperature-programmed reduction, and X-ray diffraction. Results show that a cubic fluorite structure solid solution can be formed with Pr and Mn doped into CeO2 lattice. Three oxygen species, namely, lattice oxygen O-I (O2-), defect oxygen species O-II (O-2(-), O-2(2-), and O-), and hydroxyl-like groups and adsorbed molecular water O-III, exist in the solid solution structure. In general, the defect oxygen species O-II is responsible for soot combustion. CePr exhibits fast oxidation rate because of the presence of open oxygen migration channel (O-I <-> O-II <-> O-III), and reactive oxygen species O-II can continue to be replenished. CeMn possesses a large amount of surface active oxygen, which results in excellent low-temperature catalytic activity.

Abstract:In this paper,CuOx@Ag/CeO2 catalysts were synthesized by simple wet-chemical method and equal volume impregnation method.The obtained catalysts were subjected to soot temperature programmed oxidation(soot-TPO)activity tests and were further characterized by various techniques such as X-ray diffraction(XRD),transmission electron microscopy/high-resolution transmission electron microscopy(TEM/HR-TEM),N2 physisorption,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)and H2-temperature pro-grammed reduction(H2-TPR).The results show that CuOx@Ag/CeO2 synthesized presents well controlled core-shell structures,with nano-cube like Cu2O as the core and Ag decorated polycrystalline CeO2 grafting layers as the shell.Such core-shell structured CuOx@Ag/CeO2 can successfully construct a sec-ondary oxygen delivery channel(CuOx → CeO2 → Ag)to effectively transfer bulk oxygen of the catalyst to the soot,resulting in its excellent soot oxidation activity compared to CuOx@CeO2.The potential benefiting effect by Ag introduction over Cu@Ag/Ce can be concluded as:(ⅰ)pumping lattice oxygen and accelerating gaseous O2 dissociation to generate significantly increased active surface oxygen content;(ⅱ)modulating a moderate surface oxygen vacancies concentration to maintain more highly active O2 species.
