Abstract:ADSCs compared to control patients, including the antimicrobial peptide lactoferrin.Protein levels of lactoferrin were also increased in conditioned media from CD patient-ADSCs as compared to conditioned media from control patients (p<0.01,n=21-25).Mice with acute DSS colitis receiving daily intracolonic injections of apo-lactoferrin had improved clinical scores as compared to vehicle-injected mice.NCM460 cells treated with apo-lactoferrin had increased levels of phosphorylated Akt and s6p70K kinases, consistent with a pro-proliferative action in the intestinal epithelium. Conclusions: Here, we provide the first demonstration of lactoferrin production by adipose tissue, and specifically, mesenteric ADSCs.We suggest that the increased lactoferrin levels observed in mesenteric ADSCs during CD may promote intestinal epithelial cell proliferative responses and influence disease outcome. Our data point to lactoferrin as a potential mediator of responses between intestinal epithelial cells and mesenteric ADSCs during intestinal inflammation.Furthermore, lactoferrin may represent a candidate adipocyte-derived target for the development of innovative treatment strategies in CD.
