Abstract:Herein, we have designed and synthesized a novel type of nitrogen-doped carbon-supported CoO nanohybrids, i.e., nitrogen-doped carbon-wrapped porous single-crystalline CoO nanocubes (CoO@N-C nanocubes), by using Co3O4 nanocubes as precursors. Owing to its unique structural features, the as-synthesized CoO@N-C nanocubes demonstrate markedly enhanced anodic performance in terms of reversible capacity, cycling stability, and rate capability, facilitating its application as a high-capacity, long-life, and high-rate anode for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Hollow structures have attracted great attention based on the advantage to accommodate volume expansion. However, template removal usually results in structure destruction. Herein, dandelion-like Mn/Ni co-doped CoO/C hollow microspheres (CMNC-10h) are synthesized via an Ostwald ripening process without templates. The high-angle annular dark field mapping images at the atomic level indicate the successful doping of Mn and Ni into CoO. Via an annular bright field image, oxygen vacancies induced by doping can be clearly observed. The residual two electrons in the oxygen vacancy site are highly delocalized, as confirmed by density functional theory calculations, effectively improving electrical conductivity. According to electron holography analysis, the dielectric polarization field in superficial regions of primary nanoparticles can facilitate insertion of Li+ ions into nanoparticles and thus enhance electrochemical kinetics. Combining those advantages, CMNC-10h demonstrates a high capacity of 1126 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 1000 cycles as anode material for a lithium-ion battery. Additionally, based on the strong adsorption toward polysulfide, the porous structure to accommodate sulfer/polysulfide, and the effects of oxygen vacancies to immobilize and catalyze polysulfide, CMNC-10h-S as cathode material for a lithium-sulfur battery also displays a high capacity of 642 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 1 C.

Abstract:The inferior conductivity and large volume expansion impair the widespread applications of metal oxide‐based anode materials for lithium‐ion batteries. To address these issues, herein an efficient strategy of structural engineering is proposed to improve lithium storage performance of hierarchical CoO nanospheres wrapped by graphene via controllable S‐doping (CoOS0.1 @ G). S‐doping promotes the Li+ diffusion kinetics of CoO by expanding the interplanar spacing of CoO, lowering the activation energy, and improving the pseudocapacitance contribution. Meanwhile, the electronic structure of CoO is adjusted by S‐doping as confirmed by density functional theory calculations, thus enhancing the conductivity. Finite element analysis reveals that the produced Li2S during lithiation improves the structural stability of the S‐doped electrode, which is further confirmed by experimental observation. As expected, CoOS0.1 @ G exhibits excellent lithium storage performance with an initial discharge capacity of 1974 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1, and high discharge capacity of 1573 mAh g−1 after 400 cycles at 500 mA g−1. It is believed that the insights into the structural doping enlighten research to explore other metal oxides for fast and stable Li ion storage.

Abstract:Among the various nanostructures, porous materials with controlled pore structures have been widely used for designing transition metal-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, because they provide good access to electrolyte and can effectively accommodate stress arising from volume changes. In particular, ternary transition metal oxide materials containing nanovoids, arranged with high degree of periodicity, are ideal for enhancing lithium-ion storage capability. In this study, we provide a method using spray pyrolysis for the synthesis of mesoporous multicomponent metal oxide microspheres containing Ni and Mo components and N-doped carbon, in which three-dimensionally ordered 40 nm-sized mesopores are interconnected. During the synthesis, polystyrene nanobeads are used as a sacrificial template and are readily eliminated via thermal decomposition. Increased concentrations of polystyrene nanobeads enables the formation of open channels throughout the microspheres. When employed as a lithium-ion battery anode, the mesoporous multicomponent metal oxide microspheres containing Ni and Mo components and N-doped carbon exhibit high reversible capacity, good cycling stability, and excellent rate performance. After 1000 cycles, the microspheres deliver a discharge capacity of 693 mA h g-1 at a current density of 1.0 A g-1.

Abstract:Supramolecular precursors exhibit unique superiority in preparing functional nanocomposites comprised of ultrasmall active nanoparticles uniformly embedded in carbon. By virtue of the self-assembly of supramolecule MoO42- - polydopamine (Mo-PDA) on the surface of sulfonated polystyrene microspheres, hierarchical hollow MoO2/nitrogen-doped carbon (H-MoO2/NC) microspheres, which are assembled from ultrathin nanosheets comprising of ultrasmall nanoisland-like MoO2 embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon, are obtained. During the preparation of H-MoO2/NC, the confining effect of the surrounding carbon effectively inhibits the growth of MoO2 nanoparticles and results in the formation of ultrasmall nanoisland-like MoO2. In addition, the nanoisland-like MoO2 is strongly embedded into nitrogen-doped carbon as indicated by the presence of strong Mo-N bond. The strong coupling between MoO2 nanocrystallites and nitrogen-doped carbon results in an enhanced synergistic effect for the electrochemical Li-ion storage. As a result, H-MoO2/NC manifests a high capacity and good long-term stability (1191 mAh g(-1) in the 100th cycle at 0.2 C) as well as excellent rate behavior (a capacity of 697 mAh g(-1) at 20 C).
Highly monodisperse dumbbell-like yolk-shell manganese monoxide/carbon microspheres for lithium storage and their lithiation evolution

Abstract:Herein, a novel dumbbell-like MnO/C microspheres with the yolk-shell structure, high monodispersity and regular morphology are successfully prepared by calcining precursors MnCO3/RF microspheres under the vacuum condition. The effects of calcination temperature on morphology, carbonization degrees of carbon shells and pore properties of MnO/C microspheres are systematically investigated. Benefited from the yolk-shell structure, reasonable distribution of MnO nanocrystals and porous structure, MnO/C microspheres prepared at 550°C exhibit high reversible capacity of 852.6 mAh/g at 1.32 C over 500 cycles, long-term cycling stability (888.4 mAh/g at 2.64 C over 400 cycles) and excellent rate performance (454.39 mAh/g at 6.60 C and 253.28 mAh/g at 13.20 C are remained). Furthermore, the lithiation evolution of MnO/C microspheres in the long-term cycling process at nano- and micro-scales are revealed and the LiCoO2||MnO/C full cell present a great cyclic stability. Dumbbell-like MnO/C microspheres demonstrate potential applications for next-generation Li-ion batteries as anode materials profited from superior electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Mesoporous MnCo2O4 nanospheres with an average diameter of approximately 480 nm have been synthesized by a polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-assisted solvothermal method followed by thermal annealing. MnCo2O4 nanospheres consist of many nanoparticles having sizes in range of 20-50 nm, the specific area of the sample being 24.4 m(2) g(-1). When used as the anode material for lithium ion batteries, the mesoporous MnCO2O4 nanospheres show not only an excellent cycling stability, but also an outstanding rate capability. More specially, the discharge capacities of 749.1 and 629.6 mA h g(-1) can be retained at current densities of 200 and 400 mA g(-1) after 50 cycles, respectively. In addition, the average discharge capacities of 1013.8, 827.1, 770.6, 733.3, 697.3, 651.4 and 522.4 mA h g(-1) could be observed at current densities of 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000 and 2000 mA g(-1), respectively. The improved cycling stability and rate capability can be ascribed to two unique structural features of mesoporous MnCo2O4 nanospheres: namely, the mesoporous nature of electrode materials which can help to reduce the volume variation during repeated lithiation/delithiation processes, and the nanostructure which can provide a shortened Li+ transmission path. The current synthesis approach can be easily spread to prepare other binary metal oxides, including Co-free anode materials.
N-doped carbon nanocapsules as nanoreactors to boost lithium storage performance of Co-based oxide nanocrystallines

Abstract:Uniform cubic Co-based metal-organic framework has been synthesized thorough a facile co-precipitate reaction. Then monodispersed Co3O4 nanocrystallines encapsulated into N-doped carbon nanocapsules (Co3O4@NCN) was successfully prepared by successive annealing processes of precursor under nitrogen and air atmosphere. Such porous Co3O4@NCN hybrid exhibits excellent electrochemical characteristics in lithium ion storage due to N-doped carbon nanocapsules as nanoreactors with plentiful cavities to accommodate volume changing and outstanding transport kinetic to maintain mechanical stability of electrode materials. Especially, the Co3O4@NCN electrode manifests ultra-long cycling capability and rate performance, exhibiting a high discharging specific capacity of 751 mAh g−1 at 1.0 A g−1. Hence, this special design presents a synthetic strategy for other metals oxides with controllable morphology and good electrochemical property in energy storage areas.

Abstract:Biomass-derived carbon materials are widely studied and used in energy storage applications. Unfortunately, the disadvantages such as poor capacity and rate performance limit their development. Heteroatom doping can effectively improve the electrochemical properties of biomass-derived carbon materials. In this work, we designed and prepared environmentally friendly and cost-effective biomass (lotus root)-derived nitrogen-phosphorus (N–P) double-doped porous carbon spheres. When used as an anode material for a lithium-ion battery, the porous carbon spheres exhibited excellent stability performance (a reversible capacity of 739.6 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 and 599.16 mAh g −1 after 215 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 , respectively) and superior rate performance (a capacity of 187.22 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 ) due to the synergy of the heteroatomic doping and the layered porous spherical structure. The novel biomass-derived material based on N–P double-doped porous carbon spheres can serve as a cost-effective option for anode materials of lithium-ion batteries. Besides, an "adsorption-pore filling/intercalation" hybrid mechanism is proposed to understand the possible principle for superior lithium storage performance based on CV , ex-situ Raman and XRD results.

Abstract:A Co-based metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) with a unique three-dimensional starfish-like nanostructure was successfully synthesized using a simple ultrasonic method. After subsequent carbonization and oxidation, a nanocomposite of nitrogen-doped carbon with a Co3O4 coating (Co3O4@N-C) with a porous starfish-like nanostructure was obtained. The final hybrid exhibited excellent lithium storage performance when evaluated as an anode material in a lithiumion battery. A remarkable and stable discharge capacity of 795 mAh·g−1 was maintained at 0.5 A·g−1 after 300 cycles. Excellent rate capability was also obtained. In addition, a full Co3O4@N-C/LiFePO4 battery displayed stable capacity retention of 95% after 100 cycles. This excellent lithium storage performance is attributed to the unique porous starfish-like structure, which effectively buffers the volume expansion that occurs during Li+ insertion/deinsertion. Meanwhile, the nitrogendoped carbon coating enhances the electrical conductivity and provides a buffer layer to accommodate the volume change and accelerate the formation of a stable solid electrolyte interface layer.

Abstract:Three-dimensional porous NiO/CNT microspheres are constructed by the facile spray-drying method and subsequent annealing treatment under N2 atmosphere, which are subsequently wrapped by graphene oxide (GO) to form the porous NiO/CNT/GO microspheres. Benefiting from abundant pores distributed between NiO nanoparticles and CNT, porous NiO/CNT/GO microspheres exhibit a good cycling stability (333.6 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles at 2000 mA g−1). Thanks to CNTs distributed inside the microspheres and GO that provides support for microspheres, porous NiO/CNT/GO microspheres show a high rate performance (445.1 mA h g−1 at 5000 mA g−1). This work provides an approach for the synthesis of high-performance lithium-ion battery anode materials, and the synthesis of porous NiO/CNT/GO microspheres plays a very important role in promoting applied physics, which has brought vitality to physics.

Abstract:Iron oxide (Fe2O3) is a promising anode material for next-generation high-energy lithium-ion batteries owing to its high theoretical specific capacity, but it suffers from unstable electrochemistry, as represented by a significant volume variation upon (de)lithiation and unstable solid-electrolyte interface. To target these issues, a double-coating synthetic route has been developed to prepare a yolk-shell-structured gamma-Fe2O3/nitrogen-doped carbon composite, in which spindle-like gamma-Fe2O3 cores are encapsulated in the highly conductive carbon shell. Through precisely controlling the void space between the gamma-Fe2O3 core and the carbon shell, volume variation in gamma-Fe2O3 during (de)lithiation is well accommodated, while the composite maintains an intact and relatively dense structure, which stabilizes the solid-electrolyte interface and is beneficial for improving the practical energy density of the material. With a stabilized (de)lithiation electrochemistry and a synergistic storage effect between the two active components, the composite enables excellent lithium storage performance, in terms of reversible capacity, cycling ability, and rate capability.

Abstract:Porous hollow Co3O4 microspheres wrapped with graphene oxide were synthesized by a step solvothermal method and subsequent heat treatment. Benefiting from the design of special porous hollow microspheres, the effective specific surface area was greatly increased, the sufficient contact between the porous hollow Co3O4 microspheres and electrolyte was achieved, and then a charge specific capacity of 888.59 mA h g-1 was gained. Meanwhile, partial stress from the charging/discharging process was greatly relieved due to the abundant pores and hollow structure, excellent cycling stability was realized, and the charge specific capacity of the 1000th cycle was 465.75 mA h g-1 at 5 C (1 C = 890 mA g-1). In addition, the conductivity of Co3O4 microspheres was effectively improved due to the tight package of graphene oxide to Co3O4 microspheres, and superior rate performance was attained (280.99 mA h g-1 at 10 C).

Abstract:Transition metal oxides such as Fe3O4 have been widely explored as the anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The rational design of the architecture of active materials is highly desirable to advance their lithium-storage properties. Herein, we report the construction of pomegranate-like microscale superparticles with an average size of 450nm, comprising close-packed Fe3O4@C yolk-shell nanoparticles (NPs), by combining bottom-up assembly and top-down etching methods. Combining the merits of yolk-shell NPs, secondary particle configuration, and homogeneous carbon coating, such elaborately designed superparticles show great promise for LIB anodes. Moreover, the ability to fine tune the void space in individual yolk-shell NPs allows for the further improvement in lithium storage. A stabilized capacity as high as 1246mAhg−1 is achieved at 0.8Ag−1, and even cycled at an ultrahigh current density of 5Ag−1, our pomegranate-like Fe3O4 NP superparticles can still maintain a high capacity of 520mAhg−1 after 1000 cycles. This work establishes a generic strategy for producing pomegranate-like superparticles of transition metal oxides for high-rate and long-cycle lithium storage.
Facile synthesis of pomegranate-like structured SiO x composite spheres with internal carbon conductive network for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Incorporating carbon into unique structural particles is an effective way to further enhance cycle stability, the number of lithium-ion transfer channels within particles, and diffusion rate, but the procedure is intricate and challenging. The introduction of carbon into pomegranate-like SiO 2 nanospheres is achieved by co-depositing SiO 2 with carbon precursors to produce ultra-fine SiO 2 /C composite nanoparticles that replace the SiO 2 nanoparticles that make-up the pomegranate spheres. The ultrafine SiO 2 /C composite nanoparticles encapsulated inside the sphere are connected to each other, creating a carbon-conductive network within the sphere. A mechanically stable outer carbon layer containing nitrogen is coated on the surface to form the (P-SiO x /CN)@CN composite material. The mechanically stable outer carbon layer, the reserved void space within the sphere, the core constructed by interconnected nanoparticles, and the carbon conductive network inside the sphere work together to endow the composite with superior electrochemical properties. The (P-SiO x /CN)@CN composite delivers high reversible mass discharge specific capacity of 970 mA h g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 over 500 cycles. This work develops a new approach to the facile synthesis of high-performance SiO 2 anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A novel Co3O4/N-doped porous carbon hybrid with dodecahedrons structure was synthesized by a facile, two-step, thermal transformation of a cobalt-based zeolitic imidazolate framework. Well-dispersed Co3O4 nanoparticles were embedded in nitrogen-doped porous carbon networks, forming a unique nanopolyhedron. When tested as anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the hybrid exhibited superior electrochemical performance, including excellent rate capability of 560mAhg−1 at 10Ag−1 which is close to 46% of the rate capacity at 100mAg−1, outstanding cycling stability with 91.7% capacity retention of the second cycle after 110 cycles, and considerably large discharge capacity of 1730 mAhg−1 at 100mAg−1. Moreover, the hybrid also showed enhanced electrocatalytic activity for electrochemical oxygen evolution from water splitting.

Abstract:Exploring advanced anode materials with highly reversible capacity have gained great interests for large-scale lithium storage. A facile two-step method is developed to synthesize nitrogen-doped carbon coated MoSe2 microspheres via hydrothermal plus thermal polymerization. The MoSe2 microspheres composed of interconnected nanoflakes are homogeneously coated by a thin nitrogen-doped carbon (N-C) layer. As an anode for lithium ion batteries, the MoSe2/N-C composite shows better reversibility, smaller polarization, and higher electrochemical reactivity as compared to the unmodified MoSe2 microspheres. The MoSe2/N-C electrode delivers a high specific capacity of 698mAhg(-1) after 100cycles at a current density of 100mAg(-1) and good high rate performance (471mAhg(-1) at a high current density of 2000mAg(-1)). The improved electrochemical performance is attributed to the conductive N-C coating and hierarchical microsphere structure with fast ion/electron transfer characteristics.
Three-dimensional porous N-doped graphitic carbon framework with embedded CoO for ultrahigh and stable lithium storage

Abstract:A three-dimensional porous N-doped graphite carbon framework embedded with cobalt oxide () was prepared using a simple polymer heat treatment method. This material is utilized as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The experimental results demonstrate that the shows outstanding performance. The first capacity is 1628 mAh g -1 (0.05 A g -1 ) and exhibits excellent cycle characteristics, maintaining a capacity of 352.72 mAh g -1 after 1000 cycles at 1 A g -1 . During pyrolysis, the interconnected macroporous structure is mostly preserved, and the formation of the macropores happens perpendicular to the surface. This occurrence is mainly due to the high-temperature carbonization of PVP and the significant pore formation resulting from the breakdown of Co(NO 3 ) 3 . The pore wall undergoes a solid-to-hollow transformation due to the formation of CoO nanoparticles within the walls. This provides a useful approach for designing the anode structure of high-performance LIBs.

One-step method synthesis of cobalt-doped GeZn1.7ON1.8 particle for enhanced lithium-ion storage performance

Abstract:The exploration of alternative anode materials to obtain the satisfactory lithium-ion storage performance is crucial for next-generation energy storage devices. Herein, the rational design of a completely new anode material is reported by a simple solid state reaction method, which follows an insertion-type lithiation mechanism, cobalt-doped GeZn1.7ON1.8 (Co-GeZn1.7ON1.8). The introduced cobalt increases the achievable capacity by more than 100%, originating from the additional space for the lithium-ion insertion. The Co-GeZn1.7ON1.8 particle anode delivered high capacity (861.4 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 after 200 cycles) and ultralong cycling stability (2000 cycles at 1.0 A g−1 with a maintained capacity of 435 mAh g−1), which represents outstanding comprehensive electrochemical performance. Electrochemical kinetic results confirms the existence of the pseudocapacitive and the reduced lithium-ion diffusion barrier in the Co-GeZn1.7ON1.8 particle anode. Furthermore, ex-situ XRD and XPS analyses corroborate the reversible intercalation electrochemical reaction mechanism of the Co-GeZn1.7ON1.8 anode. This study offers a new vision toward designing high-performance quaternary metallic oxynitrides-based materials for large-scale energy storage applications.
