Abstract:The goal of this investigation is to characterize the mortar from the ancient city wall of Xindeng in Fuyang, Hangzhou (China), which reveals a history of nearly 1800 years. Several approaches were used to analyze seven specimens obtained from this ancient city wall, and physical properties, mechanical performances, binder/ aggregate ratios of these specimens were then determined. However, the mixture compositions as well as the mix design vary greatly among different locations of the city wall. The results indicate that the historical wall is mainly composed of hydrated lime and sand, and parts of the specimens also contain clay. Meanwhile, calcite and quartz are the major phases present in the historical wall mortars with several impurities. Further, the specimens' great strength and large apparent density are related to the abundant aggregates used and the presence of the fragments of blue brick within the specimens.

Abstract:Ancient mortars played a crucial role in the construction of historical architectures due to their physical and chemical compatibility with traditional building materials such as stones and bricks. Therefore, the analysis and optimization of the ancient mortar formula are significant in the restoration and preservation of historical sites. In this work, 20 mortar samples selected from five ancient stone pagodas in Zhejiang Province, China, were analyzed. The results showed that mud, lime-soil mortar, lime-sand mortar, and lime-gypsum mortar were used as binders in these pagodas. The Ca(OH)(2) / aggregate ratio ranging from 0.3 to 2.7 was usually used to prepare lime mortar. Protein and polysaccharide were also found in some samples.

Abstract:Tianluoshan site (5000∼2500 BC), which belongs to the Hemudu culture, has suffered damages from the hydraulic effect like other Chinese earthen sites in moist circumstance. Tung oil and sticky rice juice, as Chinese traditional building materials, were chosen as the additives in this study. Tung oil has the property of good waterproofness, fast dry-up, and quick film-forming by oxidation. Sticky rice juice has the advantage of high glutinousness, good tenacity, and low expandability. The study is to figure out the best performing mixture of tung oil and sticky rice juice to decrease the permeability of soil and increase its strength to facilitate excavations at archeological sites enlarging the display of layers of cultures. Meanwhile, the color of the site soil after reinforcement must be maintained for a long time. From the direct shear tests and the falling head test of 9 specimens mixed in different mass ratios, it was confirmed that the optimal mass ratio of the tung oil, the sticky rice juice, and the soil was 5 : 10 : 85. The treated soil specimen of the optimal mass ratio had the largest increment of shearing strength. The self-standing height of the vertical soil wall increases correspondingly from 2.63 m to 6.18 m, which could enlarge the step height when excavating a deep earthen site and extend the display height at the protection stage. The treated soil at the optimal mass ratio also showed the largest decrement of permeability coefficient from 1.257 × 10−5 cm/s of the untreated soil to 1.627 × 10−6 cm/s, which could reduce the hydraulic effect to the soil. The microstructures of the 9 specimens in different mass ratios were observed by SEM. The results showed that the glutinousness of sticky rice juice could cohere soil particles together, and the tung oil could then form oxidation film wrapping around the particle groups. In order to meet the aesthetic requirements of earthen sites conservation, the surface color contrast tests were used to measure the color change induced by the two additives. The surface contrast tests showed that the treated soil at the optimal mass ratio had the minimum variation of the surface, which could satisfy the basic requirements of earthen sites protection.

Abstract:The Chinese people started to add organic matter to lime or tabia' no later than 1500 years ago, and thus created the traditional Chinese organic-inorganic mortar featured in this paper, which has been demonstrated by a great deal of archaeological evidence. According to the ancient literature records, the traditional Chinese organic-inorganic mortar was widely used for architectural purposes, such as rammed earthen buildings, finishing mortars, city walls, water conservancy projects and tombs. To verify the authenticity of the literature, four types of architecture were chosen from eastern China, and the obtained samples were analysed by chemical methods and FT-IR. The experimental results turned out to be consistent with the literature.

Abstract:Chu-nam putty is a special organic–inorganic hybrid material invented by ancient Chinese people. It was prepared by mixing tung-oil, lime and oakum (plant fibers like jute, ramie and so on) with excellent sealing performance. The invention and application of Chu-nam putty in wooden ship lead to improvement in sailing technology and ship safety issue. In this paper, the analytical results of a piece of chu-nam putty which was discovered in "Huaguang No.1" ancient ship are presented. The results show that the components of chu-nam putty are calcite, carboxylate and unsaturated esters by means of FT-IR, XRD and TGA/DSC. And the FT-IR and cross-section microscopic analysis confirm that the oakum was from jute. Comparing with the modeling putty samples it is found that the outstanding sealing performance of chu-nam putty comes from the coordination reaction of Ca2+ from the Ca(OH)2 and the oxidation aggregation reaction of CC double bonds in unsaturated fatty acid.

Abstract:To extend the lifetime of wall-paintings in the Mogao Grottoes, various kinds of conservation materials (for example, PVA, acrylic acid and B72) and techniques (for example, adhesion, consolidation and surface coating) have been used in the past decades. However, as a basic concern, it still remains obscured how the deterioration mechanism of wall-paintings changes after conservation materials are applied. In this contribution, an assumption was advanced to clarify this mechanism. Different layers in the wall-paintings have different physical properties, such as thermal and moisture expansions, which may be altered after the conservation materials penetrate into the paintings. The differences of these properties may cause stress between the layers in the paintings with the change of environmental factors, which will finally lead to deterioration of wall-paintings. A series of experiments were performed to determine thermal and moisture expansion properties of consolidated wall-painting plasters. The impact of the conservation materials on the expansion properties of wall-painting plasters was quantified, in order to evaluate these materials. Consistency of experimental conclusions and conservation experience validated this hypothetical mechanism.
Study on the Ancient Putty from the Site of the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 CE) Baochuanchang Shipyard, Nanjing, China

Abstract:In 2003, the excavation of the ancient site Baochuanchang Shipyard was carried out in Nanjing, China and this shipyard was believed to have been the workshop where the huge vessels of Zheng He's fleet were built and maintained. Several pieces of ancient putty were found here, and a small piece was sampled and analyzed in this paper to study its components and structure. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the putty was mainly composed of calcite (CaCO3), while pyrolysis-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC–MS) analysis indicated that tung oil was used in making the putty. In addition, plant fibers inside the putty were identified as jute by the means of polarizing microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. These findings confirmed the putty as the so-called chu-nam putty, which was a traditional sealing material used in ancient shipbuilding. Moreover, the surface morphology of the putty was obtained by SEM, and pore size distribution was measured by gas adsorption-desorption analysis. The analytical results suggested that the putty was quite compact, which could perform well in sealing huge wooden ships. This research revealed the shipbuilding skills of the Baochuanchang Shipyard. It may provide reference for studying Zheng He's vessels and make further a contribution to the conservation and restoration of ancient wooden ships of the Ming Dynasty.
A Study of Tung-oil–lime Putty—a Traditional Lime Based Mortar

Abstract:Tung-oil-lime mortar is a special organic–inorganic binding material invented by the ancient Chinese people. It was widely used in wooden ship and special moisture-proof structures of ancient buildings due to its good sealing and waterproof performances. As a traditional binding material, tung-oil–lime mortar would have a bright applicative prospect in protection of cultural relics. In this paper, the formula, performances and mechanism of tung-oil–lime mortar are discussed. The results show that the mortar prepared by tung-oil with calcium hydroxide has better mechanical properties, water-resistivity and weather resistance than common lime mortar. The effective compositions of tung-oil–lime mortar were carboxylic acid calcium, curing tung-oil and calcium hydroxide. And these good performances of tung-oil–lime mortar come from the compact structure which is established through coordination reaction of Ca2+ from the Ca(OH)2 and the oxidation aggregation reaction of CåC double bonds in unsaturated fatty acid.
Characterizing the Sealing Materials of the Merchant Ship Nanhai I of the Southern Song Dynasty

Abstract:Nanhai I is a highly valuable shipwreck of the Southern Song Dynasty for studying various topics, including the shipbuilding techniques. The sealing materials are of significant importance to ensure the ship’s reliability during the voyage across the ocean and they were rarely analyzed. Therefore, the sealing materials of this ship were analyzed by several analytical approaches. The sealing materials included two types, i.e., gap filler with jute fibers and surface coating without any oakum. The main components of both types of putty are calcite with minor Tung oil. The weight ratio of Ca(OH)2/Tung oil range from 4.3:1 to 7.9:1 for surface coating samples and the weight ratio of Ca(OH)2/organics is 3.1:1 for the gap filler sample. Additionally, we first find that the surface coating has a layered structure, where outer layers contain more Tung oil than inner layers. The innermost layer of the surface coating sample might be altered by organic acids from wood deterioration, causing its loose structure and grey color. The composite layers with different formula might be a result of balancing the costs and performances of the putty.

Abstract:In this study, the materials and microstructure of ancient Chinese wall paintings from the Song-Jin period Xianqing temple were investigated using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, and pyrolysis–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Apart from comparing and analyzing the microstructures, materials, and painting styles of the wall paintings, radiocarbon accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), in particular bomb pulse dating, was employed for the first time to determine the dating of the ancient Chinese wall paintings. Morphological results showed that the wall paintings on the east and west walls comprised a pigment layer, an underpainting layer made by chalk, and a soil layer. Raman spectroscopy confirmed that the pigments used included lazurite, green earth, massicot, amorphous carbon black, cinnabar, and chalk. In addition, a comparative analysis of the wall paintings with significantly different painting styles revealed that the wall paintings had not been repainted. The analytical results of radiocarbon content obtained by AMS revealed that the soil layers of the wall paintings were made in the Ming Dynasty (1368 to1644 AD), while the dating results of the underpainting layer further confirmed that the ancient wall paintings might be painted in 1963 AD or 1968 to 1972 AD. Microscopic and ATR-FTIR analyses further confirmed that the fibers detected in the underpainting layers of the wall paintings contained cotton. Based on the Py-GC/MS analysis, the presence of hydrocarbon compounds provided evidence of wax being used as binders in the wall paintings.

Characterization and Quantitation Study of Ancient Lacquer Objects by NIR Spectroscopy and THM-Py-GC/MS

Abstract:Oils were often used as additives in lacquering process in ancient time, and the proportion of oil to lacquer is crucial for the quality of the lacquer objects. In order to quantitative analyze the proportion of oil to lacquer in the ancient lacquer objects, Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), a non-destructive method was studied. In this research, a partial least squares (PLS) model of reference samples for quantitative analysis of lacquer films was established. When evaluating the final model, factors such as correlation coefficient (R) and the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) were considered. The final optimal results of the PLS model showed that RMSEP and correlation coefficients (R) in the calibration set were 0.112 and above 0.98, respectively, demonstrating that NIRS can be used to the quantification analysis of lacquer film. Subsequently the developed PLS model was applied to quantitatively analyze the lacquer samples from the Buddhist statue and altar of Qing dynasty, while thermally assisted hydrolysis-methylation for pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (THM-Py-GC/MS) was applied for the qualitative analysis. The results show that urushiol-based lacquer and tung oil were used and the ratios of oil in lacquer are varied in different objects for special purposes. For the first time, the proportions of oil to lacquer were revealed in the ancient lacquer objects, which is significant to enhance the knowledge about lacquering techniques in ancient times. Feasibility Study on Quantitative Analysis of Ancient Lacquer Films by Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract:Lacquerware is an important part of Chinese tangible cultural heritage, which runs through the whole Chinese history. In order to improve the performance of raw lacquer, ancient people mixed drying oil with raw lacquer. The proportion ofdrying oil directly affected the propertiesof the lacquer film. Unfortunately, due to the lack of relevant historical literature and the aging degradation of ancient lacquerwares from archaeological excavations, it is difficult to determine the materials used in the lacquer film quantitatively. Therefore, in order to understand the ratio of drying oil to raw lacquer usedin the ancient lacquer making process, it is necessary to establish a method for quantitative analysis of the ancient lacquer film oil/lacquer ratio. In this study, the ancient lacquer film was quantitatively analyzed by FTIR-ATR and NIR through standard samples. The results showed that FTIR-ATR could not achieve the purpose of quantitative analysis when the lacquer film seriously aged. The PLS model established by near-infrared spectroscopy combined with chemometrics could quickly and non-destructively analyze the oil/raw lacquer ratio of ancient lacquer film. The results show that the PLS model has good stability and predictability, with lower the root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC), root means square error of prediction (RMSEP), root mean square error of cross-validation (RMSECV), and correlation coefficients of R-e R-p, R-v above 0.99. The method was applied to analyze ancient lacquer wares. The relative content of the drying oil contained in the ancient lacquer film was calculated by the PLS quantitative model, and the different proportions of oil/rawlacquer used in lacquer making in different times and regions were determined. It provides a scientific basis for interpreting the "oil and lacquer" technology of ancient China and provides scientific support for the conservation and restoration of lacquer artifacts.
[Study on Archaeological Lime Powders from Taosi and Yinxu Sites by FTIR].

Abstract:Archaeological lime powders samples from Taosi and Yinxu sites, natural limestone and experimentally prepared lime mortar were investigated by means of Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) to identify the raw material of lime powders from Taosi and Yinxu sites. Results show that ν2/ν4 ratio of calcite resulted from carbonation reaction of man-made lime is around 6.31, which is higher than that of calcite in natural limestone and reflects the difference in the disorder of calcite crystal structure among the natural limestone and prepared lime mortar. With additional grinding, the values of v2 and ν4 in natural limestone and prepared lime mortar decrease. Meanwhile, the trend lines of ν2 versus ν4 for calcite in experimentally prepared lime mortar have a steeper slope when compared to calcite in natural limestone. These imply that ν2/ν4 ratio and the slope of the trend lines of ν2 versus ν4 can be used to determine the archaeological man-made lime. Based on the experiment results, it is possible that the archaeological lime powder from Taosi and Yinxu sites was prepared using man-made lime and the ancient Chinese have mastered the calcining technology of man-made lime in the late Neolithic period about 4 300 years ago.
Hydrophilic Organosilicone Rubber: The New Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Consolidant For Ancient Earthen Architectures

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid material used as consolidant for earthen relics was synthesized by adding silica nano particles into polysiloxane with the presence of surfactant. This composite material is less hydrophobic than other polymer consolidant, which can avoid the preservation damage caused by the incompatibility between the hydrophobic consolidant and the hydrophilic soil. The tensile strength of the synthesized consolidant is close to other rubbers, which can relieve the stress between consolidant and soil within the expansion-shrinkage process when environmental conditions change. The product was applied on ancient Liangzhu city wall and its effectiveness was examined.

Abstract:Purpose The color painting of ancient buildings has high historical and artistic value but is prone to aging due to long-term outdoor exposure. The purpose of this study is to develop a new type of sealing coating to mitigate the impact of ultraviolet (UV) light on color painting. Design/methodology/approach The new coating was subjected to a 500-h UV-aging test. Compared with the existing acrylic resin Primal AC33, the UV aging behavior of the new coating, such as color difference and gloss, was studied with aging time. The Fourier infrared spectra of the coatings were analyzed after the UV-aging test. Findings Compared with AC33, the antiaging performance of SF8 was substantially improved. SF8 has a lower color difference value and better light retention and hydrophobicity. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed that the C-F bond and Si-O bonds in the resin of the optimized sealing coating protected the main chain C-C structure from degradation during the aging process; thus, the resin maintained good stability. The hindered amine light stabilizer TN292 added to the coating inhibited the antiaging process by trapping active free radicals. Originality/value To address the problem of UV aging of oil-decorated colored paintings, a new type of sealing coating with excellent antiaging properties was developed, laying the foundation for its demonstration application on the surface of ancient buildings.

A case study and mechanism investigation of typical mortars used on ancient architecture in China

Abstract:Mortars sampled from Dutifulness Monument, where typical ancient China mortar formulas and manufacturing processes were used, were analyzed by starch–iodine test, FTIR, DSC–TG, SEM and XRD methods. Several modeling samples were then made according to historical records of Chinese ancient mortar formulas and analyzed with the same techniques. The modeling formulas also were used to consolidate loose specimens. The results show that sticky rice plays a crucial role in the microstructure and the consolidation properties of lime mortars. A possible mechanism was suggested that biomineralization may occur during the carbonation of calcium hydroxide, where the sticky rice functions as a template and controls the growth of calcium carbonate crystal. The organic–inorganic materials formed based on this mechanism will be more favorable for consolidating the loose samples both in strength improvement and durability.

Abstract:Lime mortars have taken an important role in constructing ancient Chinese masonry structures, including city walls, buildings, and tombs. A tomb built with lime mortars and stones belonging a Ming high‐rank official Xu Jie was discovered in Huzhou City of China. Eight different samples from Xu Jie's tomb, representing four types of lime‐mortar based materials: joint mortar between stone bricks, bedding mortar, grouting mortar, and plaster mortars were collected for analysis and comparison. The characterization of the construction materials has therefore become of primary importance. The function of each mortar was reported and studies into the micro‐textural features and mineralogical compositions of those mortars were performed via a multi‐analytical approach. The joint mortars were all found to be aerial lime mortars with predominately lime. The bedding mortar was found to consist of lime, soil and sand, typical of a tabia mortar. The grouting mortar was found to consist of lime and ground contact metamorphosed limestone. Analysis of plaster sample taken from the roof of the main tomb identified the presence of calcium stearate/palmitate, indicating the usage of plant‐based Tung oil as an additive. The analytical results will promote our understanding of Ming architectural technology and craftsmanship, and provide critical information for the conservation of Xu Jie's tomb.

Abstract:The traditional lime mortar was investigated by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometry and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). The results show that the mortar from the memorial archway in the southern Anhui province was the organic-inorganic composite materials composed of lime with tung oil or sticky rice. It was found that the excellent performance of the tung oil-lime mortar can be explained by the compact lamellar organic-inorganic composite structure that was produced by carbonization reaction of lime, cross-linking reactions of tung oil and oxygen and complexing reaction of Ca2+ and -COO-. The compact micro-structure of sticky rice-lime mortar, which was produced due to carbonation process of lime controlled by amylopectin, should be the cause of the good performance of this kind of organic-inorganic mortar.

Abstract:The recipes and properties of tung oil-lime putty were investigated by means of scanning electron microscope(SEM),X-ray diffractometry(XRD)and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry(FTIR).The results show that the putty prepared with tung oil and Ca(OH) 2 has the best properties.Compared with the common lime mortar,the 90days compressive strength and shear strength of the tung oil-Ca(OH) 2 putty increase by 72%and 245%respectively and the water absorption coefficient reduces to 1/620of that of the common lime mortar.The excellent performance of the tung oil-Ca(OH) 2 putty can be explained by the strong ability to cure of tung oil and the dense microstructure of the tung oil-Ca(OH) 2 putty.
