Abstract:The development of organic solar cells (OSCs) based on non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) is a potential way to conquer the dilemma of OSCs based on fullerene derivatives acceptors (FM). In this article, four promising NFAs, two excellent polymers and eight donor/acceptor (D/A) interfaces based on NFAs and polymers are theoretically investigated using DFT and TD-DFT. Geometric structures, electronic and optical absorption properties of NFAs and polymers were studied in details. By calculating the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) levels, exciton binding energies, optical absorptions and analyzing density-of-states (DOS) and charge difference density (CDD), the roles of NFAs (or polymers) in the FMO energy levels and optical absorptions of D/A interfaces were revealed, and the relationship between exciton binding energy and characteristic of charge separation was uncovered. The obtained charge separation/recombination rates of D/A interfaces prove that all designed D/A interfaces have great potentials for application in OSCs, and this work of optical absorption of D/A interfaces under external electric fields offers a considerable method for tuning the performance of OSC device. We hope our investigation can provide a useful guideline for enhancing the performance of OSCs.
Interface Engineering for High Performance Polymer and Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Interface engineering is a critical strategy for improving the performance of both polymer and organometal trihalide perovskite (e.g., CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 ) solar cells. A good interfacial material should fulfill several requirements including 1) good charge selectivity to improve the charge collection efficiency at the corresponding electrodes, 2) matched energy levels with the conduction band and valence band of the light harvesting film to maximize the photovoltage of the solar cells, 3) high conductivity to minimize the interfacial resistance loss and forming Ohmic contact with the electrodes [1]. In the first part of my talk I will discuss several strategies to design new conjugated polymer-based interfacial materials with desired electrical conductivity, energy levels and processibility to improve the charge collection efficiency of polymer solar cells [2]. The application of these interfacial materials as interconnection layer for highly efficient tandem polymer solar cells will also be discussed [3]. In the second part of my talk, I will discuss how we can apply the knowledge we learned from the interface engineering of polymer solar cells to design new class of electron transport layer [4] and hole transport layer materials [5] to improve the performance of perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:The contact between the polymer active layer and the electrode is one the most critical interfaces in polymer solar cells. In this article, we report the progress of interface engineering in polymer solar cell research, where the multiple functions of the interfacial materials will be discussed. The vertical composition profile in polymer: fullerene blends is an emerging topic, and the interlayer effect on the vertical phase separation and device performance will be highlighted. We also discuss the energy level alignment at the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) interface, with the aim of providing a better understanding towards the route of high efficiency polymer solar cells.

Abstract:Third generation solar cells including organic solar cells, perovskite solar cells have attracted much attention due to their advantages of low cost, solution processability and flexibility. The rapid progress in this field is attributed to the development of absorbing layers, interfacial materials or interfacial modification, device architectures and so on. Especially, the interfaces in the devices significantly affect the exciton dissociation, charge carrier transport and collection, and subsequently affect the device performance. This review focuses on the interface engineering in organic solar cells, polymer/nanocrystal hybrid solar cells and perovskite solar cells in our group. We summarize the strategies of designing effective interfacial materials including hole-transporting materials, electron-transporting materials and their modification to achieve ohmic contact at the interface of active layer and electrodes. A series of low-temperature solution processed low-cost inorganic materials and organic small molecules are developed. With appropriate energy levels, high mobility and low defect or ability to passivate perovskites, highly efficient organic and perovskite solar cells are achieved. Self-assembly monolayer technologies are also discussed here. It is an efficient way to modify the work function of electrodes to obtain ohmic contact between electrodes and active layer. On one hand, the self-assembly monolayer can also be used to passivate the defect of metal oxide buffer layer such as ZnO or TiO2 to reduce recombination, which may improve the morphology of perovskite film to enhance the performance. Plasmonic effect is introduced to enhance the light absorption of active layer by incorporating Au or Ag nanoparticles into the interface layers. At last, the optimized strategies for interface modification between polymer and nanocrystals to improve the exciton dissociation and charge transport are discussed in details. By attaching benzenedithiol ligands onto the surface of CdSe nanocrystals in the "face-on" geometry, the nanocrystal-nanocrystal or polymer-nanocrystal distance is minimized. Furthermore, the "electroactive" p-orbitals of the benzenedithiol can further enhance the electronic coupling, which facilitates charge carrier dissociation and transport. On the other hand, judicious choice of ligands with appropriate molecular dipoles has a strong impact on chemical and electronic structures at the polymer-nanocrystal interface and subsequently on photovoltaic device performance. With these strategies, highly efficient polymer/CdSe nanocrystal hybrid solar cells have been achieved. A few viewpoints on further developing interface engineering for high-performance solar cells are also provided.

Abstract:Efficient exciton-to-charge generation from the introduction of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) has been an important breakthrough in organic solar cell (OSC) developments. However, low device fill factors (FFs) following significant free charge carriers recombination loss continue to undermine their marketplace potential. Previous studies have successfully uncovered the importance of donor and acceptor domains in promoting charge transport. However, the functionality of donor/acceptor (D/A) interfaces relevant to free charge recombination remains unclear despite such interfaces are present throughout the material. In this work, the disorder-induced uphill bulk-to-D/A interface transport energy landscape is unveiled to enhance the polaron recombination resistance thereby also mitigating the triplet states formation from back charge transfer. In simple words, increasing the interface disorder while keeping the purer domains highly ordered will impart greater bulk-to-interface differential energy which then serves as a recombination energy barrier. Herein, these are made possible by varying the NFA outer side chains from linear alkyls to bulkier 2D phenylalkyls which influence the donor-acceptor interaction and define the interfacial disorder. Meanwhile, the extent of interface disorder without tradeoff in geminate losses is dependent on electrostatics and nanomorphology driving efficient exciton dissociation. By understanding these interplays, remarkable FFs over 80% and power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) above 18% are revealed to remain accessible even with simple binary component device fabrications without additional components/treatments thereby maintaining the scalability. Consequently, the principles uncovered here will serve as the foundation to reach the optimum potential of binary and simple systems, a prerequisite to ultimately realize the most cost-effective OSC design strategies for practical applications.

Abstract:The nature of electrical contact between the bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) layer and the electrodes is critical to the overall performance and stability of polymer solar cells (PSCs). In recent years, considerable efforts have been devoted to the interface engineering of BHJ-PSCs. In this chapter, we reviewed the development of interface modification materials and their applications in BHJ-PSCs. The discussions were divided into several sections according to the device configuration of BHJ-PSCs, i.e., conventional device, inverted device, and tandem device. For single junction devices (including conventional and inverted devices), we highlighted the interface modification materials which were applied at both electron-collecting and hole-collecting electrodes, including inorganic materials (such as metals, salts, semiconducting oxides, etc.), self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) or SAMs-modified functional layers, and organic/polymeric materials. For tandem devices, the discussions were focused on the functional materials utilized as intermediate connectors. As discussed in this chapter, the development of interface modification materials has resulted in great progress in BHJ-PSCs, which can potentially pave the way for the commercialization of BHJ-PSCs.

Abstract:A 7.3% efficiency non-fullerene polymer solar cell is realized by combining a large-bandgap polymer PffT2-FTAZ-2DT with a small-bandgap acceptor IEIC. The complementary absorption of donor polymer and small-molecule acceptor is responsible for the high-performance of the solar-cell device. Abstract:<p>Organic solar cells (OSCs) have drawn considerable attention in the last decade, owing to the great potential of light weight, flexibility, and low-cost solution processing. Especially, non-fullerene organic solar cells (NF–OSCs) have become a research hot spot due to their excellent power conversion efficiency. Interfacial engineering to facilitate charge transport and collection is crucial to achieve high efficiency of OSC. However, the interfacial engineering of NF–OSCs remains less understanding and systematically reviewed. This min-review provides a brief review of the recent developments in interfacial engineering for NF–OSCs with a special focus on the design and application of cathode/anode interface materials for NF–OSCs and interconnecting materials for non-fullerene organic tandem solar cells. This mini-review also provides useful guidance and challenge regarding interface materials for NF–OSCs.</p>

Abstract:To achieve efficient organic solar cells, the design of suitable donor–acceptor couples is crucially important. State-of-the-art donor polymers used in fullerene cells may not perform well when they are combined with non-fullerene acceptors, thus new donor polymers need to be developed. Here we report non-fullerene organic solar cells with efficiencies up to 10.9%, enabled by a novel donor polymer that exhibits strong temperature-dependent aggregation but with intentionally reduced polymer crystallinity due to the introduction of a less symmetric monomer unit. Our comparative study shows that an analogue polymer with a C2 symmetric monomer unit yields highly crystalline polymer films but less efficient non-fullerene cells. Based on a monomer with a mirror symmetry, our best donor polymer exhibits reduced crystallinity, yet such a polymer matches better with small molecular acceptors. This study provides important insights to the design of donor polymers for non-fullerene organic solar cells.

Abstract:In this work, in situ ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were used to investigate the working mechanism of an alcohol-/water-soluble conjugated polymer poly [(9,9-bis(3′-(N,N-dimethylamino)propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9–dioctylfluorene)] (PFN) as the cathode interfacial layer in organic solar cells from the view of interfacial energy level alignment. Fullerene (C60) was chosen as the model acceptor material in contact with PFN as well as two other cathode interfacial layers ZnO and TiO2 in the configuration of an inverted solar cell structure. Significant charge transfer between PFN modified ITO (indium tin oxide) electrode and C60 is observed due to the low work function of PFN. This results in the Fermi level of the substrate pinned very close to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of C60 as well as an additional electric field at the cathode/acceptor interface. Both of them facilitate the electron extraction from the acceptor C60 to the ITO cathode, as confirmed by the electrical measurements of the electron-only devices with PFN modification. The better electron extraction originated from the Fermi level pinning and the additional interface electric field are believed to contribute to the efficiency enhancement of the inverted organic solar cells employing PFN as cathode interfacial layer.

Abstract:The power conversion efficiency of thin film solar cells using organic–inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskite as an absorber has achieved over 25%. An augment of the output voltage can further increase the efficiency approaching the Shockley–Queisser efficiency limitation, which is highly correlated with charge carrier management at interfaces in perovskite devices. This perspective presents some considerations to improve carrier transfer and reduce recombination loss for highly efficient perovskite solar cells, including primary requests on charge carrier transfer dynamics, reasonable design methodologies of interfacial materials, and tuning interface interaction between perovskite and charge transport layers.

Abstract:Two low band-gap donors, small molecule p-DTS(FBTTh2)2 (SD) and polymer PBDTTT-C-T (PD), and two perylene diimide acceptors, small molecule PDI-2DTT (SA) and polymer PPDIDTT (PA), were used to fabricate non-fullerene organic solar cells. The effects of four donor/acceptor combinations, PD/PA, PD/SA, SD/SA and SD/PA, on the morphology, charge transfer, charge transport and photovoltaic performance were investigated. Power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of PD/PA, PD/SA, SD/SA and SD/PA were 3.04%, 0.28%, 2.52% and 0.29%, respectively. The PD/PA blend and SD/SA blend exhibited relatively uniform and continuous morphology, efficient photoinduced charge transfer, high mobility and balanced charge transport relative to PD/SA and SD/PA blends, leading to much higher PCEs.
