Abstract:Based on the important application of epoxides, it is an attractive and urgent topic to develop sustainable and more efficient preparation protocols for epoxides. Herein, we report an exploration of styrene epoxidation method with CoO X /CeO 2 bimetallic oxides as a heterogenous catalyst. The catalyst was prepared by the pyrolysis of a MOF precursor and characterized by SEM, TEM, BET, XRD, XPS, ICP-OES and Raman spectroscopy. The results indicate that the presence of abundant oxygen vacancies on the surface of CoO X /CeO 2 , and the synergy of CoO X /CeO 2 bimetallic oxides significantly contribute to the excellent catalytic performance. The catalytic oxidation protocol showed high styrene conversion and selectivity, and the range of suitable substrates was also explored. In addition, CoO X /CeO 2 catalyst showed good reusability and stability after recycling for six times without significant loss of catalytic activity. Designed control experiments revealed that the reaction proceeds via a co-oxidation mechanism and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved.

Abstract:The development of low-cost, high-performance catalysts at the atomic level has drawn scientists' attention due to the high atom efficiency, unique structure, and potentially high catalytic selectivity. Among the atomically tailored catalysts, nanoclusters are of particular interest because they represent an underexplored medium state between isolated single atoms and typical nanoparticles. In this study, we report a wet-chemistry approach to synthesize highly dispersed subnano-FeOx clusters anchored on an ultrathin amorphous Al2O3 nanosheet (or Al2O3–FeOx nanosheet) and its excellent catalytic performance for selective conversion of styrene to styrene oxide. The reasons for the high catalytic performance of the Al2O3–FeOx nanosheet are 2-fold. One is that the unsaturated and amorphous nature of the Fe atoms in the subnano-FeOx clusters promotes the adsorption of styrene onto the catalytic sites of FeOx clusters for epoxidation. Abstract:Styrene oxide, an important intermediate, is of great significance in fine-chemical synthesis. Great efforts have been made to design novel catalysts for styrene oxide synthesis by styrene epoxidation reaction (SER). Recently, Co3O4 has been considered as an attractive alternative to the noble catalysts for efficient SER. However, there are two potential catalytic sites within Co3O4: tetrahedral Co2+ and octahedral Co3+. It is highly desirable to identify the catalytic insight into the geometric sites and engineer highly efficient Co3O4 catalysts. Herein, we engineered anisotropic Co3O4 (A-Co3O4) nanosheets, which primarily exposed tetrahedral Co2+ on the surface. It exhibited an enhanced SER catalytic performance in the styrene oxide yield by a factor of 5.69, compared with site-exposed isotropic Co3O4 (I-Co3O4). The CoAl2O4 experiment shows that tetrahedral Co2+ is more beneficial to trigger SER than octahedral Co3+, thus maintaining the styrene oxide yield. The density functional theory calculation results further show that tetrahedral Co2+ is more conducive to the styrene oxide synthesis by comparing the free energy change of the SER rate-determining step. Thus, this work uncovers the site-dependent catalytic essence and paves the way for the implementation of facet engineering toward highly efficient catalysis.

Abstract:A composite material (FeSIL) prepared by FeCl3-imidazolium ionic liquid grafted on SBA-15 exhibited effective catalytic activity for solvent-free oxidation of styrene into benzaldehyde with high selectivity using H2O2 oxidant and it presented easy recovery and reusability. In situ DRIFTS spectra for styrene and H2O2 adsorption showed that an intermediate Fe3+–π surface complex on the catalyst surface was responsible for the activation of styrene and its reaction with H2O2 molecules on the surface or in the bulk phase.

Abstract:Cobalt and nickel modified phospotungstates (CoNiPW) were fabricated via the reaction of H3PW12O40 center dot 6 center dot 5H(2)O (PW) with Co(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O and NiCl center dot 6H(2)O, followed by calcination; and then characterized by various physicochemical techniques, such as XRD, FT-IR, UV-vis, SEM, TEM and XPS to determine the surface morphology, structure and composition. The as-prepared CoNiPW was used as a catalyst for solvent-free oxidation of styrene with molecular oxygen oxidant. It exhibited efficient in achieving higher conversion of styrene and high selectivity to benzaldehyde. A detail study on influence of key reaction parameters, as well as catalytic role of various constituents in CoNiPW on the reactivity and selectivity was conducted to identify active sites. The reaction mechanism via benzyl alcohol intermediate was proposed by in situ adsorption of styrene on the catalyst surface and the product intermediate produced in the oxidation reaction. The recovery and reusability of the catalyst was also evaluated.

Abstract:A series of supported catalysts Co3O4/SiO2 were prepared by deposition precipitation method. High-Performance Styrene Epoxidation with Vacancy-Defect Cobalt Single-Atom Catalysts

Abstract:Exploring highly active and cost-effective catalysts for styrene epoxidation is of great significance, but it remains challenging to simultaneously achieve excellent conversion and selectivity toward styrene oxide. In this work, the structures and performance of Co, Fe, and Cu single-atom catalysts (SACs) in styrene epoxidation with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) are predicted using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results reveal that the Co-N structure prefers that of styrene oxide over Fe-N and Cu-N structures. This predicted result is verified via catalytic evaluations, where the Co SACs displayed significantly higher styrene oxide selectivity than Fe and Cu SACs. Moreover, the activity of Co SAC can be further improved by the construction of unsaturated vacancy-defect cobalt single sites. As a result, excellent performance with styrene conversion of 99.9% and styrene oxide selectivity of 71% is achieved after a reaction time of 8 h on the optimal Co SAC.

Abstract:In this study, a Co3O4 catalyst is synthesised using the chitosan-assisted sol-gel method, which simultaneously regulates the grain size, Co valence and surface acidity of the catalyst through a chitosan functional group. The complexation of the free -NH2 complex inhibits particle agglomeration; thus, the average particle size of the catalyst decreases from 82 to 31 nm. Concurrently, Raman spectroscopy, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments demonstrate that doping with chitosan N sources effectively modulates Co2+ to promote the formation of oxygen vacancies. In addition, water washing after catalyst preparation can considerably improve the low-temperature (below 250 °C) activity of the catalyst and eliminate the side effects of alkali metal on catalyst activity. Moreover, the presence of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites promotes the adsorption of C8H8. Consequently, CS/Co3O4-W presents the highest catalytic oxidation activity for C8H8 at low temperatures (R250 °C = 8.33 μmol g-1 s-1, WHSV = 120,000 mL hr-1∙g-1). In situ DRIFTS and 18O2 isotope experiments demonstrate that the oxidation of the C8H8 reaction is primarily dominated by the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. Furthermore, CS/Co3O4-W exhibits superior water resistance (1- and 2- vol% H2O), which has the potential to be implemented in industrial applications.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous Ti-Al composite oxides (OMTA-x) with variable Al/Ti atomic ratios have been prepared by a facile approach, and were evaluated as catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene with CO2 (CO2-ODEB). Compared to Al2O3-supported titania catalyst, the resultant catalysts OMTA-x displayed inspiringly improved catalytic performance. For example, catalyst OMTA-2 demonstrated notable activity up to 20 h with maximum styrene yield of 69.4%, even after five times regeneration by calcination. The superior catalytic performance of OMTA-x can be attributed to the highly homogenous dispersion of Ti, the obviously improved surface acidity and redox properties, and the excellent textural and structural properties. The bridging oxygen in the surface Ti4+ OAl3+ bonds with enhanced reactivity with H were concluded as the critical active sites for dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene, and new understanding for the development of TiO2-based catalysts with superior catalytic activity, stability, and reusability for CO2-ODEB was provided.

Self-assembly of a Highly Stable and Active Co3O4/H-TiO2 Bulk Heterojunction with High-Energy Interfacial Structures for Low Temperature CO Catalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Development of transition metal oxide catalysts with a tunable structure is extremely important for energy, chemical and environmental processes. Herein, we report a new strategy for the synthesis of a highly stable and active Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction with high-energy interfacial structures through two-step hydrothermal-crystallization for efficient low-temperature CO catalytic oxidation. By selectively etching, an anatase TiO2 support exposing the high-index (112) facet was first created. The high-index (112) facet with high surface energy can endow the bulk TiO2 support with unique physical and chemical properties so as to act as a foundation to construct a robust high-energy interfacial bulk heterojunction. Because of the presence of Ti–O–Co species at the high-energy interface, the prepared Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction possessed much more catalytic active sites compared to Co3O4 nanoparticles supported on conventional TiO2 supports and exhibited a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 3.56 × 10−3 s−1 at 120 °C, which was very competitive compared to those of reported cobalt-based catalysts and 1000 times higher than that of commercial Co3O4. Importantly, due to the strong interactions between Co3O4 and the TiO2 bulk support exposed high-index facet, more attractive water-resisting properties for low temperature CO oxidation can be achieved in the presence of steam (∼2%) compared to previously reported catalysts. The results show promising opportunities for tailoring catalytic behaviors beyond a facile and rational design with a controllable metal–support interface.

Abstract:Mesoporous titanium silica-coated cobalt ferrite core-shell structures were synthesized as catalysts for styrene oxidation by hydrothermal and sol-gel methods. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, AA, SEM, TEM, FTIR spectroscopy, N 2 physisorption, ICP-OES and XPS. XRD patterns indicated that the magnetic core was composed of cobalt ferrite. SEM and TEM micrographs along with the IR spectra confirmed the presence as desired of a dense SiO 2 layer on the core. XPS revealed that the outest layer of the structure was made of a mesoporous Ti-SiO 2 layer. The successful incorporation of Ti active oxidation sites (framework Ti, FW Ti) in the mesoporous layer was verified by XPS Ti 2p spectra decomposition. The post-grafting method for the Ti insertion proved to be better than the one-pot to obtain a higher number of active Ti sites on the surface. All the synthesized catalysts were active in styrene oxidation with dilute aqueous H 2 O 2 . The highest styrene conversion (37%) was obtained with the catalyst synthesized by post-grafting of Ti on a preformed mesoporous SiO 2 layer with a high specific surface area. This catalyst was the one with the highest fraction of surface FW Ti (XPS). The major products of the reaction were benzaldehyde and phenyl acetaldehyde. The catalyst was easily recovered from the reaction medium using an external magnet, and no significant loss of activity was observed after four catalytic cycles.

Abstract:Styrene oxide is one of the most important epoxides for manufacturing fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals, but its current synthesis process is environmentally unfriendly. As an eco-friendly and safe system, Co2+(Ba2+)-exchanged faujasite zeolites were found to efficiently catalyze styrene epoxidation with molecular oxygen. Despite having been discovered for nearly two decades, the nature of the active site and the mechanism of the reaction remain unclear. Herein, we carried out detailed experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations. We concluded that the active sites are binuclear, rather than single-site Co2+ ions as generally believed, where Co2+···Co2+ or Ba2+···Co2+ pairs cooperatively activate O2 to O2 –. As compared to that on the symmetric Co2+···Co2+ pair site, the ethenyl CC in styrene tends to be exclusively attacked by the terminal oxygen closer to Ba2+ on the asymmetric Ba2+···Co2+ pair site, thus enhancing the epoxidation selectivity. This new insight will enable the optimization of oxidation catalysts.

Abstract:The increasing worldwide demand for propylene and the necessity of CO2 mitigation attracted the attention of scientists to focus on CO2-oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (CO2-ODHP). In this regard, CrOx/SiO2 catalyst is an important and conventional option. Herein, we studied the atomic layer deposition (ALD) of CrOx on silica to increase the propylene production by increasing the dispersion of the catalyst. For ALD synthesis of CrOx/SiO2 catalyst, Cr(acac)3 and synthetic air were used as metal precursor and oxidant. The catalysts were examined in the CO2-ODHP reaction and their characteristics were compared to their impregnation counterparts using UV–Vis DRS, Raman, XANES, HRTEM and STEM-EDS mapping, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD and TPO. The ALD catalysts have shown up to 2 times higher acidity and enhanced reducibility compared to the impregnation catalysts. The presence of mainly Cr(VI) with a pre-edge peak at 5.994 keV in both series of catalysts was confirmed by XANES. UV–Vis DRS and Raman spectroscopy revealed the higher contents of active polymeric Cr(VI) species in the ALD ones. The dark field HRTEM and STEM-EDS mapping represented higher dispersion of chromium oxide particles in ALD catalysts. In CO2-ODHP, the ALD catalysts showed up to 18 and 15% promotion in propane conversion and propylene yield.

Abstract:Styrene oxide is one of the most important epoxides for manufacturing fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals, but its current synthesis process is environmentally unfriendly. As an ecofriendly and safe system, Co2+(Ba2+)-exchanged faujasite zeolites were found to efficiently catalyze styrene epoxidation with molecular oxygen. Despite having been discovered for nearly two decades, the nature of the active site and the mechanism of the reaction remain unclear. Herein, we carried out detailed experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations. We concluded that the active sites are binuclear, rather than single-site Co2+ ions as generally believed, where Co2+ Co2+ or Ba2+Co2+ pairs cooperatively activate O2 to O2-. As compared to that on the symmetric Co2+Co2+ pair site, the ethenyl C=C in styrene tends to be exclusively attacked by the terminal oxygen closer to Ba2+ on the asymmetric Ba2+Co2+ pair site, thus enhancing the epoxidation selectivity. This new insight will enable the optimization of oxidation catalysts.

Abstract:Construction of efficient interfaces to improve the performance of supported metal catalysts is a challenging but effective technique. A newly synthesized catalyst with layered cobalt oxide on the surface of titania (layer-CoOx /TiO2 ) is highly selective towards the aerobic oxidation of C-H bonds in a series of hydrocarbons under sustainable conditions. The layer-CoOx /TiO2 easily outperforms the state-of-the-art noble metal catalysts and homogeneous cobalt salts used in industry. In-depth structural and functional characterization reveal that the layer-CoOx /TiO2 readily reacts with O2 for the adsorption and activation of C-H bonds. The layered structure of CoOx can maximize the interfacial effect of CoOx /TiO2 leading to a good performance for the oxidation of C-H bonds.
Efficient photocatalytic epoxidation of styrene over a quantum-sized SnO2 on carbon nitride as a heterostructured catalyst

Abstract:Styrene oxide is a pivotal organic intermediate in pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals synthesis. However, the current synthesis process relies on the use of peroxy acid or chlorohydrin, which is incompatible with establishing a more sustainable chemical industry. Here, we reported the synthesis of a quantum-sized SnO2 on 2D graphitic carbon nitride (CN) as a heterostructured catalyst, which displays efficient photocatalytic styrene epoxidation at room temperature using O2 as a mild oxidant, achieving styrene conversion of 98.1% and styrene oxide yield of 71.8%. Photoelectrochemical analysis demonstrates efficient electron transferring exists from CN to SnO2, which enhances charge carriers’ separation and transfer processes. Furthermore, we couple the photocatalytic styrene epoxidation with epoxide ring-opening amination, achieving the synthesis of value-added β-amino alcohol in a cascade reaction fashion. This work may shed light on the heterostructured catalyst design for photocatalytic selective synthesis of valuable chemicals in a sustainable manner.
