Abstract:Recent advances in monochromatic aberration corrected electron microscopy make it possible to detect the lattice vibrations with both high-energy resolution and high spatial resolution. Here, we use sub-10 meV electron energy loss spectroscopy to investigate the local vibrational properties of the SiO2/Si surface and interface. The energy of the surface mode is thickness dependent, showing a blue shift as z-thickness (parallel to the fast electron beam) of SiO2 film increases, while the energy of the bulk mode and the interface mode keeps constant. The intensity of the surface mode is well-described by a Bessel function of the second kind. The mechanism of the observed spatially dependent vibrational behavior is discussed and compared with dielectric response theory analysis. Our nanometer scale measurements provide useful information on the bonding conditions at the surface and interface.

Abstract:The topological phonon state of quantum matter is an emerging field that has been attracting considerable interest. For instance, Weyl phonons in transition-metal monosilicides have been proposed theoretically and identified experimentally. However, topological phonon nodal net states are not well studied due to the lack of realistic materials. Here, based on first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, we propose an existing material---cuprous oxide---to host the nodal net phonons. The nontrivial phonon surface states and uncovered phononic arcs are clearly visible on $k$-resolved phonon spectra, which are amenable to experimental detection. Our findings offer a possible platform for realizing topologically nontrivial phonon states and their applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional metal-organic layers (MOLs) from alternatively connected benzene-tribenzoate ligands and Zr6(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4 or Hf6(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4 secondary building units can be prepared in gram scale via solvothermal synthesis. However, the reason why the monolayers did not pack to form thick crystals is unknown. Here we investigated the surface structure of the MOLs by a combination of sum-frequency generation spectroscopy, nanoscale infrared microscopy, atomic force microscopy, aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy, and compositional analysis. We found a partial coverage of the monolayer surface by dangling tricarboxylate ligands, which prevent packing of the monolayers. This finding illustrates low-density surface modification as a strategy to prepare new two-dimensional materials with a high percentage of exposed surface.

High Harmonic Spectroscopy Probes Lattice Dynamics

Abstract:The probing of coherent lattice vibrations in solids has been conventionally carried out using time-resolved transient spectroscopy where only the relative oscillation amplitude can be obtained. Using time-resolved X-ray techniques, absolute electron-phonon coupling strength could be extracted. However, the complexity of such an experiment renders it impossible to be carried out in conventional laboratories. Here we demonstrate that the electron-phonon, anharmonic phonon-phonon coupling, and their relaxation dynamics can be probed in real-time using high-harmonic spectroscopy. Our technique is background-free and has extreme sensitivity directly in the energy domain. In combination with the optical deformation potential calculated from density functional perturbation theory and the absolute energy modulation depth, our measurement reveals the maximum displacement of neighboring oxygen atoms in {\alpha}-quartz crystal to tens of picometers in real space. By employing a straightforward and robust time-windowed Gabor analysis for the phonon-modulated high-harmonic spectrum, we successfully observe channel-resolved four-phonon scattering processes in such highly nonlinear interactions. Our work opens a new realm for accurate measurement of coherent phonons and their scattering dynamics, which allows for potential benchmarking ab-initio calculations in solids

Abstract:Interlayer coupling in two-dimensional (2D) layered nanomaterials can provide us novel strategies to evoke their superior properties, such as the exotic flat bands and unconventional superconductivity of twisted layers, the formation of moiré excitons and related nontrivial topology. However, to accurately quantify interlayer potential and further measure elastic properties of 2D materials remains vague, despite significant efforts. Herein, the layer-dependent lattice dynamics and elastic constants of 2D nanomaterials have been systematically investigated via pressure-engineering strategy based on ultralow frequency Raman spectroscopy. The shearing mode and layer-breathing Raman shifts of MoS2 with various thicknesses were analyzed by the linear chain model. Intriguingly, it was found that the layer-dependent d{\omega}/dP of shearing and breathing Raman modes display the opposite trends, quantitatively consistent with our molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations. These results can be generalized to other van der Waals systems, and may shed light on the potential applications of 2D materials in nanomechanics and nanoelectronics.

Probing Complex Stacking in a Layered Material Via Electron-Nuclear Quadrupolar Coupling

Abstract:For layered materials, the interlayer stacking is a critical degree of freedom tuning electronic properties, while its microscopic characterization faces great challenges. The transition-metal dichalcogenide 1T-TaS2 represents a novel example, in which the stacking pattern is not only enriched by the spontaneous occurrence of the intralayer charge density wave, but also recognized as a key to understand the nature of the low-temperature insulating phase. We exploit the 33S nuclei in a 1T-TaS2 single crystal as sensitive probes of the local stacking pattern via quadrupolar coupling to the electron density distribution nearby, by combining nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements with the state-of-the-art first-principles electric-field gradient calculations. The applicability of our proposal is analyzed through temperature, magnetic-field, and angle-dependent NMR spectra. Systematic simulations of a single 1T-TaS2 layer, bilayers with different stacking patterns, and typical stacking orders in three-dimensional (3D) structures unravel distinct NMR characteristics. Particularly, one 3D structure achieves a quantitative agreement with the experimental spectrum, which clearly rationalizes the coexistence of two types of interfacial environments. Our method may find general applications in the studies of layered materials.

Abstract:>To the editor,A new type of solid, called quasicrystal (QC) was discovered after Shechtman et al.[1] accidently got in 1982 a five-fold symmetry diffraction image of rapidly cooled Al-Mn alloys.In contrast with crystals with periodic atomic arrangement,QCs have perfect long-range order (like mirror symmetry)but no periodic translational symmetry. Due to their intrinsic brittleness at room temperature, QCs cannot be used directly as structural materials. However, QCs as thin films and coatings of metals in industry are applied to surface modified materials and the reinforcing phase in structural materials.

Abstract:To comprehensively understand the physical properties of the MAB phases, a systematic exploration into their lattice dynamics, Raman, and infrared vibrations is undertaken for 24 previously screened stable Al/Si‐containing MAB phases with six crystal structures using density functional theory, where Raman experiments on Cr2AlB2 and Mo2AlB2 as well as the previous work confirm the high accuracy of these calculations with an error 0.90) underscores the robust explanatory power of m−1/2 for the vibrational wavenumber.

Abstract:By using a simple and efficient deuteration process, (2)H has been successfully introduced into layered double hydroxides (LDHs). Due to significantly less (1)H-(1)H homonuclear dipolar coupling, high-resolution (1)H solid-state NMR spectra can now be obtained conveniently at medium to low spinning speed to extract the information of cation ordering in LDHs. Furthermore, we show that double-resonance experiments can be applied easily to investigate internuclear proximities and test possible cation-ordered superstructure models. This approach can be readily extended to LDHs with different compositions to explore the local structure and the key interactions between the cations in the layer and interlayer anions.
Quantum oscillations and electronic features in V1− δ Sb2 single crystals

Abstract:Nonsymmorphic compounds have attracted much interest owing to their potential nontrivial electronic states. Here, we grew V1−δSb2 single crystal with a nonsymmorphic space group I4/mcm and studied their de Haas–van Alphen oscillations. Orientation-dependent magnetization showed quantum oscillations, allowing determination of the three-dimensional Fermi surface and Berry phase. Our theoretical calculation implied that VSb2's band structures manifest flat bands along the Γ–X path, Dirac band crossings near the P and N points, and in the Γ–Z direction, and nontrivial surface states along the Γ ̄–Z ̄ line. However, the inconsistencies in observed and calculated quantum oscillation frequencies suggest that VSb2's band structures cannot nicely account for these electronic properties of our samples. This study reveals the profound impact of V vacancies on VSb2's electronic states, implying the possible topological quantum phase transition via defect engineering.

Abstract:We review lattice vibrational modes in atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, focusing on 2D materials beyond graphene, such as group VI transition metal dichalcogenides, topological insulator bismuth chalcogenides, and black phosphorus. Although the composition and structure of those materials are remarkably different, they share a common and important feature, i.e., their bulk crystals are stacked via van der Waals interactions between “layers” while each layer is comprised of one or more atomic planes. First, we review the background of some 2D materials (MX2, M = Mo, W; X = S, Se, Te. Bi2X3, X = Se, Te. Black phosphorus), including crystalline structures and stacking order. We then review the studies on vibrational modes of layered materials and nanostructures probed by the powerful yet nondestructive Raman spectroscopy technique. Based on studies conducted before 2010, recent investigations using more advanced techniques have pushed the studies of phonon modes in 2D layered materials to the atomically thin regime, down to monolayers. We will classify the recently reported general features into the following categories: phonon confinement effects and electron–phonon coupling, anomalous shifts in high-frequency intralayer vibrational modes and surface effects, reduced dimensionality and lower symmetry, the linear chain model and the substrate effect, stacking orders and interlayer shear modes, polarization dependence, and the resonance effect. Within the seven categories, both intralayer and interlayer vibrational modes will be discussed. The comparison between different materials will be provided as well.

Abstract:van der Waals (vdW) interaction plays a significant role in controlling the physical properties of layered materials. Typically, the vdW interlayer interaction can be calculated by density functional theory or experimentally characterized by quantum capacitance measurement. Here, we report the probing of the interlayer interaction in layered honeycomb materials via chiral phonons. Through helicity resolved Raman measurements, we observed a reduced chirality of the Raman G mode with increasing layer numbers. We introduced interlayer coupling terms into the traditional Raman G mode tensor to simulate the reduced phonon chirality in Raman spectra. Our Raman tensor calculation results agree with the experiments well, suggesting that the interlayer interaction can significantly influence the lattice vibration. Our demonstration provides a perspective for characterizing the interlayer interactions in vdW layered materials with honeycomb lattice structure.

Abstract:Correlation of lattice vibrational properties with local atomic configurations in materials is essential for elucidating functionalities that involve phonon transport in solids. Recent developments in vibrational spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope have enabled direct measurements of local phonon modes at defects and interfaces by combining high spatial and energy resolution. However, pushing the ultimate limit of vibrational spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope to reveal the impact of chemical bonding on local phonon modes requires extreme sensitivity of the experiment at the chemical-bond level. Here we demonstrate that, with improved instrument stability and sensitivity, the specific vibrational signals of the same substitutional impurity and the neighbouring carbon atoms in monolayer graphene with different chemical-bonding configurations are clearly resolved, complementary with density functional theory calculations. The present work opens the door to the direct observation of local phonon modes with chemical-bonding sensitivity, and provides more insights into the defect-induced physics in graphene.

Abstract:Abstract Hexagonal boron nitride ( h -BN) has long been recognized as an ideal substrate for electronic devices due to its dangling-bond-free surface, insulating nature and thermal/chemical stability. These properties of the h -BN multilayer are mainly determined by its lattice structure. Therefore, to analyse the lattice structure and orientation of h -BN crystals becomes important. Here, the stacking order and wrinkles of h -BN are investigated by transmission electron microscopy. It is experimentally confirmed that the layers in the h -BN flakes are arranged in the AA′ stacking. The wrinkles in a form of threefold network throughout the h -BN crystal are oriented along the armchair direction, and their formation mechanism was further explored by molecular dynamics simulations. Our findings provide a deep insight about the microstructure of h -BN and shed light on the structural design/electronic modulations of two-dimensional crystals.

Abstract:Artificial complex-oxide heterostructures containing ultrathin buried layers grown along the pseudocubic [111] direction have been predicted to host a plethora of exotic quantum states arising from the graphene-like lattice geometry and the interplay between strong electronic correlations and band topology. To date, however, electronic-structural investigations of such atomic layers remain an immense challenge due to the shortcomings of conventional surface-sensitive probes with typical information depths of a few angstroms. Here, we use a combination of bulk-sensitive soft X-ray angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (SX-ARPES), hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES), and state-of-the-art first-principles calculations to demonstrate a direct and robust method for extracting momentum-resolved and angle-integrated valence-band electronic structure of an ultrathin buckled graphene-like layer of NdNiO3 confined between two 4-unit cell-thick layers of insulating LaAlO3. The momentum-resolved dispersion of the buried Ni d states near the Fermi level obtained via SX-ARPES is in excellent agreement with the first-principles calculations and establishes the realization of an antiferro-orbital order in this artificial lattice. The HAXPES measurements reveal the presence of a valence-band bandgap of 265 meV. Our findings open a promising avenue for designing and investigating quantum states of matter with exotic order and topology in a few buried layers.

Abstract:Flat bands and Dirac cones in materials are the source of the exotic electronic and topological properties. The Lieb lattice is expected to host these electronic structures, arising from quantum destructive interference. Nevertheless, the experimental realization of a 2D Lieb lattice remained challenging to date due to its intrinsic structural instability. After computationally designing a Platinum-Phosphorus (Pt-P) Lieb lattice, it has successfully overcome its structural instability and synthesized on a gold substrate via molecular beam epitaxy. Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy verify the Lieb lattice's morphology and electronic flat bands. Furthermore, topological Dirac edge states stemming from pronounced spin-orbit coupling induced by heavy Pt atoms are predicted. These findings convincingly open perspectives for creating metal-inorganic framework-based atomic lattices, offering prospects for strongly correlated phases interplayed with topology.
2D V–VI Binary Nanosheets with Square Lattice: A Theoretical Investigation

Abstract:It is of paramount importance to explore novel two-dimensional (2D) materials with unique structural and physical properties that are promising to be applied in specific field. In this work, we studied 11 monolayers with novel square lattice, including S-SeN2, S-TeN2, S-SP2, S-SeP2, S-TeP2, S-SAs2, S-SeAs2, S-TeAs2, S-SSb2, S-SeSb2 and S-TeSb2, via first-principles calculations. And through our stability screening, only the S-SeN2 monolayer, where each Se atoms is tetra-coordinated with four N atoms, and each N atoms bridges two atoms, thus forming a tri-sublayer structure with square lattice, was verified as a stable 2D crystal, since it has high cohesive energy, all positive modes in phonon spectrum, and structural integrity through the molecular dynamics simulation up to 500 K. It is an indirect-bandgap semiconductor with high hole mobility, and the direct-bandgap feature can be easily obtained under external uniaxial compressions or biaxial tensions, which can be applied in electronics, photoelectronics, etc.This article is protected by copyright. Realization of a Two-Dimensional Lieb Lattice in a Metal-Inorganic Framework with Flat Bands and Topological Edge States

Abstract:Flat bands and Dirac cones in materials are at the source of the exotic electronic and topological properties. The Lieb lattice is expected to host these electronic structures, arising from quantum destructive interference. Nevertheless, the experimental realization of a two-dimensional Lieb lattice remained challenging to date due to its intrinsic structural instability. After computationally designing a Platinum-Phosphorus (Pt-P) Lieb lattice, we have successfully overcome its structural instability and synthesized it on a gold substrate via molecular beam epitaxy. Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy verified the Lieb lattice's morphology and electronic flat bands. Furthermore, topological Dirac edge states stemming from pronounced spin-orbit coupling induced by heavy Pt atoms have been predicted. These findings convincingly open perspectives for creating metal-inorganic framework-based atomic lattices, offering prospects for strongly correlated phases interplayed with topology.
