Abstract:Graphdiyne quantum dots (GDQDs) have attracted increasing attentions due to its unique electronic, optical, and electrochemical properties. However, the low conductivity and quantum yield of GDQDs limit their application. Here, nitrogen-doped graphdiyne dots (N-GDQDs) are firstly synthesized by a simple, friendly and one-step hydrothermal method. The N-GDQDs show a maximum emission at 410 nm under the excitation wavelength of 319 nm. The doping N modifies the surface defect of N-GDQDs and further greatly improves their quantum yield (from 14.6% to 48.6%). In addition, the doping N induces a strong electron transport ability and good conductivity of N-GDQDs. Subsequently, the prepared N-GDQDs are used for constructing an optical-electrochemical nanosensor for sensitive and selective detection of dopamine (DA). DA can quench the fluorescence of N-GDQDs by forming a ground-state non-fluorescent complex between phenoxy anions (in PBS solution) in DA and pyridinic N sites of N-GDQDs, which leads to a highly sensitive and selective detection of DA with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.14 μM and a linear range of 0.32–500 μM. In the electrochemical detection, DA can be oxidized to DA-quinone under the electric field through N-GDQDs/GCE, which shows a big affinity to N-GDQDs. The LOD for DA is 0.02 μM with a linear range of 0.05–240 μM. Finally, the spiked application for DA detection in human serum samples is investigated, the results show that the method has high accuracy. Our work provides a new carbon quantum dots based sensing platform, which shows great potential in practical application.

Fullerenes Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures

Abstract:A label-free fluorescence sensor for selective detection of dopamine (DA) was developed by using graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as fluorescence probes. The GQDs were prepared via a top-down acid vapor oxidation strategy, in which a hollow carbon @ mesoporous silica nanosphere (h-C@mesoSiO 2 ) serves as nanoreactor and only 1 mL of HNO 3 was used as scissors for quickly cleaving the thin carbon layer in the nanospace of h-C@mesoSiO 2 . The method not only effectively avoids a tedious separation process but also endows GQDs with uniform size and good dispersion. And the as-prepared GQDs display good linear fluorescence response to DA in the range of 0.24–5.86 mM with a low detection limit of 12.7 nM. The proposed sensor shows high selectivity and satisfying recovery for DA detection in human urine. The good specificity toward DA may be due to a) the carboxyl groups on the surface of GQDs can interact with the amine functional groups in DA through electrostatic interactions and b) this specificity is further enhanced by the π–π interaction between GQDs and DA. Importantly, the work not only provides an avenue for the controllable synthesis of GQDs, but also expands the application of GQDs prepared by top-down method to DA sensor.

A Unique Turn-off Fluorescent Strategy for Sensing Dopamine Based on Formed Polydopamine (pda) Using Graphene Quantum Dots (gqds) As Fluorescent Probe

Abstract:A rapid, facile fluorescence sensing strategy was developed for dopamine (DA) detection based on polydopamine (pDA) formed on the surface of graphene quantum dots (GQDs). The prepared GQDs were strongly luminescent because of the aromatic planar structure. DA could self-polymerize to pDA and snap to the surface of GQDs to form a thin film in alkaline environment, leading to quenching of fluorescence due to fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). With the optimized conditions, the analytical performance illustrated high sensitivity, selectivity in a wide linear range with a detection limit of 8nM. In addition, the unique method was successfully applied for DA injection test with satisfactory labeled amount. Finally, the proposed strategy was applied for DA detection in serum, wherein accurate results were obtained.

Abstract:Aminated carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) and p-amino thiophenol capped silver nanoparticles (N-AgNPs) are mixed physically to fabricate an optical nanocomposite of N-CQDs/N-AgNPs. A highly selective and sensitive "off-on" fluorescence sensing strategy for monitoring dopamine in human serum is established based on the nanocomposite. Through an electrostatic interaction between N-CQDs and N-AgNPs, N-CQDs/N-AgNPs nanocomposite is assembled. The initial fluorescence of N-CQDs is effectively "off" by N-AgNPs owing to the inner filter effect. However, with the addition of dopamine, stronger pi-pi stacking or hydrogen bonding ability of super-adhesive polydopamine produced from dopamine at pH 8 to water-soluble N-CQDs can make N-CQDs to dissociate from N-CQDs/N-AgNPs nanocomposite with fluorescence "on" as a result of the termination of inner filter effect. Meanwhile, the dissociation of N-CQDs/N-AgNPs nanocomposite and the existence of oxygen in the air may trigger the formation of Ag2S. Under the optimal conditions, the activated fluorescence intensity at 477 nm is linearly proportional to dopamine in the range of 0.33-65 x 10(-9) m with a detection limit of 0.1 x 10(-9) m and 1.2% RSD. The established sensing platform has successfully detected dopamine in serum with satisfactory results and may be an alternative powerful technique for further clinical diagnosis of dopamine-related diseases.

Abstract:Recent advances in fluorescent carbon dots have shown great potential for the sensing of biological molecules. In this study, one-step hydrothermally synthesised carbon dots (CD) and nitrogen doped carbon dots (NCD) with high quantum yields of 54.29% and 89.82%, respectively, were investigated and demonstrated to be a reliable, cost-effective, and naked-eye fluorescent probe for the detection of dopamine, a neurotransmitter, in human serum fluids. The current study is well supported by a comprehensive synthesis approach and has been described utilizing a variety of microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The discovered approach is time and pH dependent, and it provides a robust platform for specifically detecting aberrant dopamine levels using a fluorescence quenching mechanism. Dopamine detection limits for CD were calculated to be 5.54 μM for CD and 5.12 μM for NCD, respectively. The fluorescence quenching shows a linear continuous trend with a range within 3.3-500 μM and 3.3-400 μM of dopamine concentration for CD and NCD respectively. To further verify the sensitivity of CD and NCD as fluorescent probes, interference studies in the presence of different biological components were also studied and validated. This work shows that carbon-based nanomaterials and their doped nanostructures, due to their high fluorescence, have significant potential as fluorescent probes in neurological disease diagnosis as they display high selectivity, sensitivity and fast responses in the real time spectroscopic detection of dopamine in human fluid samples.

Abstract:In this paper, a simple and convenient fluorescent "turn off-on" strategy for the highly sensitive detection of dopamine (DA) and ascorbic acid (AA) based on graphene quantum dots (GQDs) was developed. DA and GQDs can form the DA-GQDs complex due to the electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. The interaction between Cu2+ and the catechol moiety of DA-GQDs complex could lead to strong fluorescence quenching of GQDs. When AA is introduced into the system, AA can reduce Cu2+ to Cu+, disturbing the interaction between Cu2+ and DA-GQDs complex and resulting in the fluorescence recovery of GQDs. Thus, a sensitive and convenient sensor for the detection of DA and AA was developed. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the fluorescence intensity was linearly correlated with the concentration of DA and AA in the range of 0.5-120 µmol L-1 and 0.05-6 µmol L-1 with a detection limit of 0.16 µmol L-1 and 0.021 µmol L-1, respectively. Meanwhile, the proposed method has potential applications on the detection of DA and AA in human urine and serum samples.
Visual Detection of Dopamine with CdS/ZnS Quantum Dots Bearing by ZIF-8 and Nanofiber Membranes

Abstract:Dopamine (DA) is a widely present, calcium cholinergic neurotransmitter in the body, playing important roles in the central nervous system and cardiovascular system. Developing fast and sensitive DA detection methods is of great significance. Fluorescence-based methods have attracted much attention due to their advantages of easy operation, a fast response speed, and high sensitivity. This study prepared hydrophilic and high-performance CdS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) for DA detection. The waterborne CdS/ZnS QDs were synthesized in one step using the amphiphilic polymer PEI-g-C14, obtained by grafting tetradecane (C14) to polyethyleneimine (PEI), as a template. The polyacrylonitrile nanofiber membrane (PAN-NFM) was prepared by electrospinning (e-spinning), and a metal organic frame (ZIF-8) was deposited in situ on the surface of the PAN-NFM. The CdS/ZnS QDs were loaded onto this substrate (ZIF-8@PAN-NFM). The results showed that after the deposition of ZIF-8, the water contact angle of the hydrophobic PAN-NFM decreased to within 40°. The nanofiber membrane loaded with QDs also exhibited significant changes in fluorescence in the presence of DA at different concentrations, which could be applied as a fast detection method of DA with high sensitivity. Meanwhile, the fluorescence on this PAN-NFM could be visually observed as it transitioned from a blue-green color to colorless, making it suitable for the real-time detection of DA.

Abstract:Neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) has been implicated in a variety of physiological and pathological processes, realizing its low detection limit and high sensitivity analysis is of great significance for early disease diagnosis. Herein, we propose a simple pyrolysis approach for dispersing Fe-sites onto the N-doped graphene support (denoted as Fe/N-GR) to construct an electrochemical biosensor for DA detection. The fully exposed Fe-sites guaranteed the well-defined active center for electrochemical oxidation of DA. The Fe/N-GR electrochemical biosensor achieves an ultra-low detection limit for DA of 27 pM with a linear range of 50 pM-15 nM. Specifically, the Fe/N-GR electrochemical biosensor exhibits favorable sensitivity and enzyme-level molecular identification ability in the selective detection of DA versus other typical redox-active interferents. What's more, the detection of dopamine in real human serum samples verifies the applicability of the developed sensor. Our results demonstrate a promising means of using fully exposed metal-site subnanometric catalysts for electrochemical sensing applications.
Integrating Carbon Dots and Gold/silver Core-Shell Nanoparticles to Achieve Sensitive Detection of Dopamine with Fluorometric/colorimetric Dual Signal

Abstract:Dopamine (DA) is a potent neuromodulator in the brain that affects a wide range of motivated behaviors. Abnormal concentration of DA is related to a variety of diseases. Hence, it is imperative to establish a rapid and precise method for quantifying DA. In this work, we integrate orange-yellow emissive carbon dots (CDs) with target-induced silver deposition on gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), forming gold/silver core-shell nanoparticles (Au@Ag NPs), to construct a fluorometric and colorimetric dual-signal sensor for sensitive detection of DA. Au NPs and silver ions (Ag+) have minimal effect on the fluorescence of CDs. DA can reduce the silver ions to Ag(0) on the surface of the Au NPs to form a silver shell, resulting in the blue-shift of the absorbance peak from 520 to 416 nm, which overlaps with the excitation spectrum of CDs. As a result, the system color turns from pink to orange-yellow, and the fluorescence of CDs is quenched due to the strong inner filter effect. The linear range of the colorimetry is 0.5–18 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.41 μM, while the linear range for the fluorometry method is 0.5–14 μM with a LOD of 0.021 μM. This method demonstrates notable advantages including a low detection limit, rapid response time, and straightforward operation in practical samples, showing great potential in biomedical analysis.

Abstract:While the super fluorescence quenching capacity of graphene and graphene oxide (GO) has been extensively employed to develop fluorescent sensors, their own unique fluorescence and its potential for chemo-/biosensing have seldom been explored. Here we report a GO-based photoinduced charge transfer (PCT) label-free near-infrared (near-IR) fluorescent biosensor for dopamine (DA). The multiple noncovalent interactions between GO and DA and the ultrafast decay at the picosecond range of the near-IR fluorescence of GO resulted in effective self-assembly of DA molecules on the surface of GO, and significant fluorescence quenching, allowing development of a PCT-based biosensor with direct readout of the near-IR fluorescence of GO for selective and sensitive detection of DA. The developed method gave a detection limit of 94 nM and a relative standard deviation of 2.0% for 11 replicate detections of 2.0 mu M DA and was successfully applied to the determination of DA in biological fluids with quantitative recovery (98-115%).

Abstract:The detection of Dopamine (DA) is significant for disease surveillance and prevention. However, the development of the precise and simple detection techniques is still at a preliminary stage due to their high tester requirements, time-consuming process, and low accuracy. In this work, we present a novel dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence sensing system based on a hybrid of carbon dots (CDs) and 7-amino-4-methylcoumarin (AMC) to quickly monitor the DA concentration. Linked via amide bonds, the CDs and AMC offered dual-emissions with peaks located at 455 and 505 nm, respectively, under a single excitation wavelength of 300 nm. Attributed to the fluorescence of the CDs and AMC in the nanohybrid system can be quenched by DA, the concentration of DA could be quantitatively detected by monitoring the ratiometric ratio change in fluorescent intensity. More importantly, the CDs-AMC-based dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence sensing system demonstrated a remarkable linear relationship in the range of 0-33.6 mu M to detection of DA, and a low detection limit of 5.67 nM. Additionally, this sensor successfully applied to the detection of DA in real samples. Polyindole-Derived Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots-Based Electrochemical Sensor for Dopamine Detection

Abstract:The sensitive monitoring of dopamine levels in the human body is of utmost importance since its abnormal levels can cause a variety of medical and behavioral problems. In this regard, we report the synthesis of nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) from polyindole (PIN) via a facile single-step hydrothermal synthetic strategy that can act as an efficient electrochemical catalyst for the detection of dopamine (DA). The average diameter of N-GQDs was ∼5.2 nm and showed a C/N atomic ratio of ∼2.75%. These N-GQDs exhibit a cyan fluorescence color under irradiation from a 365 nm lamp, while PIN has no characteristic PL. The presence of richly N-doped graphitic lattices in the N-GQDs possibly accounts for the improved catalytic activity of N-GQDs/GCE towards electrocatalytic DA detection. Under optimum conditions, this novel N-GQDs-modified electrode exhibits superior selectivity and sensitivity. Moreover, it could detect as low as 0.15 nM of DA with a linear range of 0.001–1000 μM. In addition, the outstanding sensing attributes of the detector were extended to the real samples as well. Overall, our findings evidence that N-GQDs-based DA electrochemical sensors can be synthesized from PIN precursor and could act as promising EC sensors in medical diagnostic applications.
Multifunctional nanoscale lanthanide metal-organic framework based ratiometric fluorescence paper microchip for visual dopamine assay

Abstract:Dopamine (DA) plays a significant role in the human body and cerebral nervous system, and the accurate and rapid assay of DA is essential for the diagnosis of related diseases. Herein, we proposed a turn-on ratiometric fluorescent DA assay strategy by integrating a specific DA-resorcinol chemical reaction with a multifunctional lanthanide metal-organic framework (Ln-MOF). First, Eu-BTC (1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid) was synthesized and further modified to obtain Cu@Eu-BTC, which simultaneously plays multiple roles such as fluorescence internal standard, nanoreactor, cooperative catalysis effect and color shift enhancement. The Cu@Eu-BTC dispersion-based method exhibits ultra-sensitive (limit of detection, LOD is 0.01 μM) and wide-range linear response (0.04-30 μM) to DA in real serum. More importantly, it has excellent selectivity for DA, even in the presence of epinephrine and norepinephrine analogs. Thus, this method realizes the accurate and precise quantification of DA in serum (recoveries: 98.1%-110.1%, relative standard deviation RSD < 4.6%). Next, Cu@Eu-BTC was prepared into paper microchip, which has good storage stability (RSD < 3.5%, n = 3) in four weeks and achieves point-of-care visual DA assay coupled with smartphone-assisted portable detection device. The MOF paper microchip-based method shows low sample consumption (30 μL), high accuracy and precision for the quantification of DA in serum (recovery of 92.9%-106.2%, RSD < 5.3%), and gets the same assay results as the MOF dispersion-based method (relative error ≤ 6.83%). To our knowledge, this is the first time to propose the catalytic fluorescence turn-on detection strategy of DA based on a MOF paper microchip.

Abstract:A novel flexible test strip has been developed for the selective and sensitive detection of dopamine (DA) using an electrospun polyacrylonitrile nanofiber membrane as a substrate and doxorubicin (DOX)-functionalized graphene oxide (GO) as a fluorescent ligand. Employing the Langmuir-Blodgett technique, the fluorescent probe of GO/DOX was controllably and flatly applied onto the surface of nanofiber membranes. The adsorption behavior of DA and DOX on GO in solution and on the surface of solid test strips has been investigated, respectively. The results showed that DA exhibited a higher affinity for GO, both in solution and on the surface of test strips, compared to DOX. Due to the competitive adsorption of DOX and DA onto GO, the addition of DA to the GO/DOX complex led to a significant fluorescence enhancement, attributed to the replacement of the GO-supported DOX with DA of a higher adsorption affinity to GO, enabling the detection of DA. This nanofiber-based method proves to be simple, sensitive, selective, and effectively minimizes interference from common biomolecules and small molecules in serum. Thus, this portable, cost-effective, and selective nanofiber strip holds great promise for early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases by measuring DA levels.

Abstract:<p>In this work, sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon quantum dots (S,N-CQDs) were prepared via one-pot hydrothermal treatment of EDTA disodium and sodium sulfide. The prepared S,N-CQDs were characterized by TEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, UV–vis absorption and fluorescence spectra to characterize their morphology, crystal structure, functional groups, elemental composition, and optical properties. It was found that S and N elements were successfully doped into the CQDs and the morphology was approximately spherical with an average particle size of 2.16 nm, in which the excitation/emission wavelengths were 350 and 420 nm, respectively. Compared with single element doped CQDs, double element doped CQDs have a higher quantum yield and excellent optical stability. Cell experiments showed that S,N-CQDs had good biocompatibility because they had no obvious toxicity on both normal cell lines and cancer cell lines. More importantly, based on the synergy of static quenching and dynamic quenching, the S,N-CQDs were used as effective fluorescent probes for sensitive detection of DA, with high anti-interference and low limit of detection. Based on the good biocompatibility of S,N-CQDs, the detection of dopamine in actual serum samples were carried out and the results showed an excellent recovery rate. Therefore, this work provides a dopamine sensor with a practical application prospect.</p>

Abstract:Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) as a new-type kind of zero-venami material have attracted growing interest. Herein, we developed a novel and convenient method to prepare dual emission nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs). Under ultraviolet (UV) light, N-CDs show blue and orange fluorescence centered at 435nm and 595nm, respectively. Because the two emission peaks of N-CDs exhibit different sensitivity to dopamine (DA), the N-CDs can serve as ratiometric fluorescent probes for DA measurement. The ratio (I595nm/I435nm) exhibits good linear relationship with DA concentration within the scope of 45-80 mu M. The quenching mechanism of N-CDs toward DA is also proposed, and it is suggested that the quenching may start because by the electrostatic interaction between N-CDs and DA. Dual-emission N-CDs were successfully synthesized using p-phenylenediamine as carbon source and triethylamine as nitrogen source. Notably, N-CDs could serve as a ratiometric fluorescent probe for detecting dopamine (DA) based on the variation of the ratio (I-595nm/I-435nm). There is a good linear relationship between the fluorescence quenching degree of N-CDs and the concentration of DA (45-80 mu M).
