Abstract:Whispering gallery mode(WGM)optical microcavities, which are capable of light field confinement and manipulation in a rela-tively small volume, have gained considerable attention from fun-damentals in enhanced light-matter interactions to laser applications[1].Undergoing decades of development, the improvement of lasing performance is always a significant issue, including low threshold and high quality(Q)factor[2].Increasing optical gain and reducing the losses are the key aspects towards the realization of a high-quality WGM laser.A perfect cavity struc-ture and a smooth surface are the most crucial determinants to reduce optical losses and enhance light field confined abilities. The sphere is an ideal microcavity structure with the lowest cavity losses during an internal total reflection process. In recent years, semiconductor microsphere lasers have been reported with perfect WGM lasing performance, such as perovskite materials that mainly emit in the visible[3,4].In contrast, with the advantage of a wide band gap(3.37 eV)and a much higher exciton binding energy(60 meV),zinc oxide(ZnO)micro-/nano-structures are considered to act as excellent ultraviolet lasers.A ZnO microsphere(~10 µm)has been obtained via pulsed laser ablation(PLA)method at room temperature and in air, which exhibits extensive WGM lasing[5].Based on previous research, further improvement of its lasing properties becomes significant and valuable for further application to ultraviolet optoelectronic devices.
