Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) has been considered as one of the most promising anodes for advanced rechargeable batteries due to its advantages such as high energy density, earth abundance and environmental friendly. However, its large volume change during the Li-Sn/Na-Sn alloying and de-alloying processes will result in a fast capacity degradation over a long term cycling. To solve this issue, in this work we design and synthesize a novel honeycomb-like composite composing of carbon encapsulated SnO2 nanospheres embedded in carbon film by using dual templates of SiO2 and NaCl. Using these composites as anodes both in lithium ion batteries and sodium-ion batteries, no discernable capacity degradation is observed over hundreds of long term cycles at both low current density (100 mA g(-1)) and high current density (500 mA g(-1)). Such a good cyclic stability and high delivered capacity have been attributed to the high conductivity of the supported carbon film and hollow encapsulated carbon shells, which not only provide enough space to accommodate the volume expansion but also prevent further aggregation of SnO2 nanoparticles upon cycling. By engineering electrodes of accommodating high volume expansion, we demonstrate a prototype to achieve high performance batteries, especially high-power batteries. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Hierarchical ZnS-SnS2 @C Nanocomposite As Superior-Rate and Long-Life Anode for Sodium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Two-dimensional SnS2 are known as potential anodes for Na-ion batteries owing to high energy density and low voltage plateau. However, SnS2 suffers from structural instability, material fragmentation, and low electrical conductivity. We propose to design a hierarchical structure in which the outer layer is conductive carbon, the middle layer is SnS2, and the inner layer is ZnS. Such a design can effectively solve the problem of SnS2: the conductive carbon can improve the conductivity of the composite, and the ZnS in the inner layer stabilizes the structure. ZnS-SnS2 @C has superior rate performance (257.7 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1) and cycle durability (234.4 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles with the capacity retention rate of 61.33%). In situ EIS reveals that ZnS-SnS2 @C has lower charge transfer resistance during cycling. Theoretical calculations also confirmed that the diffusion energy barrier of Na ions in ZnS-SnS2 @C is lower than that of ZnS and SnS2. The synergistic effect between SnS2 and ZnS and carbon coating with well-designed hierarchical structure provides an effective strategy to improve Na intercalation performance for anode materials. Research for SnS/C nanocomposite as lithium-ion battery anode materials

Abstract:A Sn S/C nanocomposite was prepared by simply mechanically ball-milling Sn, S and C powders. The XRD、SEM and TEM results demonstrate that the Sn S nanocomposite with carbon coating can be prepared through mechanically ball-milling methods. The Sn S/C electrode can deliver a high reversible specific capacity of 1 107 m Ah/g with 97.4% of the theoretical capacity, basically realizing the reversible conversion and alloying reaction. Particularly,the composite can demonstrate a reversible specific capacity of 854 m Ah/g at the rate of 800 m A/g, showing high rate capability. These excellent electrochemical performances attribute to the high electrochemical activity of nano Sn powders produced during the electrochemical reduction reaction, buffer effect of Li2 S and conductive carbon, which maintains the structural stability of the composite. Therefore, the Sn S/C nanocomposite provides an alternative anode material for the high-energy lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:In recent years, Sn-based materials have been explored as potential anodes for high energy lithium-ion batteries. However, their severe volume expansion in lithiation procedure could lead to poor cycling property and inferior rate capability, which limit the applications of Sn-based materials in lithium-ion batteries. In this study, we have designed and prepared uniform Mn2SnO4/Sn/carbon composite cubic particles with a porous structure as anode material through facile hydrothermal method and subsequent annealing process The results demonstrate that the well-crystallized three-dimensional (3D) cubes with rounded corners consist of nanoparticles uniformly arranged in carbon matrix. The as-made Mn2SnO4/Sn/C anode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance and delivers 908 mA h g(-1) of discharge capacity up to the 100th cycle at a current density of 500 mA g(-1), with a Coulombic efficiency above 97%. The remarkable performance can be attributed to the formation of unique conductive frameworks and the porous structure.

Abstract:Tin sulfide-based anodic materials with high specific capacities for lithium storage have attracted some attentions. Whereas, their poor cycling stability caused by the sever volume variation upon the repeated charge/discharge processes and their intrinsic poor electrical conductivity still need to be solved urgently. Herein, a bio-inspired hierarchical nanofibrous SnS/C composite was synthesized by employing natural cellulose substance as both scaffold and carbon source. Tin oxide gel film was firstly deposited on each cellulose nanofiber through layer-by-layer self-assembly processes, and then the composite was sulfided by hydrothermal treatment followed by carbonization and reduction in Ar atmosphere. The resultant nanocomposite manifests a unique three-dimensional (3D) porous structure composed of interlaced carbon nanofibers anchored with SnS nanoflakes. Used as the anodic material in lithium-ion batteries, the SnS/C composite exhibits remarkable electrochemical performances with a high specific capacity (1396 mAh g(-1) in the 1st cycle at 100 mA g(-1)), long cycle life (612 mAh g(-1) after 70 cycles) and good rate capacity (298 mAh g(-1) at 1000 mA g(-1)), which are superior to the nanofibrous SnS2. The superior anodic performances of the SnS/C composite are mainly due to the 3D hierarchical porous nanostructure and the nanofibrous carbon conductive matrix together with the ultrathin carbon-coating layer, promoting the electrode-electrolyte contact, accommodating the drastic volume changes of SnS, inhibiting the active SnS particles from aggregation and facilitating the electron transfer and lithium-ion diffusion during the charge/discharge processes. Abstract:Hierarchical composites with good electrical conductivity and sufficient voids are in great demand for the high-performance storage of sodium ions but typically limited due to the complicated synthesis procedure. Here, we report on a facile wet-chemistry synthesis of Sb2S3 nanoparticles onto highly crumpled Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, which form three-dimensional (3D) architecture with good electrical conductivity. The homogeneously distributed Sb2S3 nanoparticles suppress the restacking issue of the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, which creates rich voids for rapid electron/Na+ transport and minimizes the volume expansion effect from Sb2S3 upon repeated charging/discharging cycles. When used as a sodium-ion battery (SIB) anode, the composite shows a high capacity (329 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 after 100 cycles) and good rate capability and cycling performance (215 mAh g−1 at 2 A g−1 and maintains 118 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles). We believe the metallic interconnected network and the 3D architecture synergistically result in a promoted sodium-ion storage performance. This work provides a simple strategy to construct MXene-based hybrids with a porous network structure for application fields, such as energy storage, photocatalysis, adsorption, and microwave absorption.

Synergistic Na-storage reactions in Sn4P3 as a high-capacity, cycle-stable anode of Na-ion batteries

Abstract:Room-temperature Na-ion batteries have attracted great interest as a low cost and environmentally benign technology for large scale electric energy storage, however their development is hindered by the lack of suitable anodic host materials. In this paper, we described a green approach for the synthesis of Sn4P3/C nanocomposite and demonstrated its excellent Na-storage performance as a novel anode of Na-ion batteries. This Sn4P3/C anode can deliver a very high reversible capacity of 850 mA h g(-1) with a remarkable rate capability with 50% capacity output at 500 mA g(-1) and can also be cycled with 86% capacity retention over 150 cycles due to a synergistic Na-storage mechanism in the Sn4P3 anode, where the Sn nanoparticles act as electronic channels to enable electrochemical activation of the P component, while the elemental P and its sodiated product Na3P serve as a host matrix to alleviate the aggregation of the Sn particles during Na insertion reaction. This mechanism may offer a new approach to create high capacity and cycle-stable alloy anodes for Na-ion batteries and other electrochemical energy storage applications.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides (TMSs), as highly promising candidate anode materials, are gradually attracting the attention for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) recently on account of its multiple valence states as well as considerable capacity. Nevertheless, TMSs have relatively low inherent electronic conductivity and large volume variation, which stands in the way of their practical applications. Herein, to ameliorate the drawbacks of TMSs, we report a hierarchical g-C3N4@WS2 composite synthesized by a solvothermal reaction. The as-synthesized g-C3N4@WS2 composite provides abundant reaction active sites for lithium storage and sufficient interspace to buffer the volume variation of WS2 nanoparticles. Moreover, the ultrathin g-C3N4 nanosheets could restraint WS2 nanoparticles from agglomeration, increase the contact chances with electrolyte and facilitate the charge transport and ion diffusion. In consequence, the optimized g-C3N4@WS2 electrode delivers a large discharge capacity (1136.1 mAh g−1 at 0.1C) and superior cycling stability (433.8 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles). In , a simple method for constructing hierarchical transition metal sulfides as anode materials for LIBs is proposed.

Abstract:In the realm of scalable fabrication of anodes through ball-milling, ensuring high electrochemical performance and robust cycling stability anodes for sodium-ion batteries is paramount but presents a formidable hurdle. In pursuit of these goals, a distinctive hybrid composite distinguished by its intricate multiphase composition have devised. This entails the integration of innovative NiSbS/NiSb/NiS nanomaterials onto exfoliated graphite nanosheets (Ni-Sb-S/GN) via a straightforward technique. Analyses indicates the interplay between graphite nanosheets and the hybrid Ni-Sb-S, in conjunction with the discharge byproducts of Na2S, substantially augment the stability and Na-ion diffusion kinetics of the Ni-Sb-S/GN anode. The novel Ni-Sb-S/GN exhibits markedly superior electrochemical performance in comparison to its Ni-Sb-S counterpart. Specifically, Ni-Sb-S/GN achieves a reversible capacity of 238.7 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 post 300 cycles, remains notable capacities of 200 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles under 1 A g-1, respectively, translating to high capacity retention rates of 83.8% from the 2nd cycle. This contribution presents a novel avenue for the exploitation of advanced multiphase anodes exhibiting superior capacity, rate capability, and cycling durability.

Advanced Sn/C composite anodes for lithium ion batteries

Abstract:Metallic tin was deposited in fine particulate form on the surface of carbonaceous mesophase spherules (CMS) and in the pores of porous carbon by the decomposition and reduction of tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate at 450 °C. The Sn/C composite powders obtained were used as anode materials for lithium ion cells. Electrochemical cycling tests of coin cells show that the dispersion of tin into the carbonaceous materials enhances the reversible capacity of the electrodes. The capacity retention at the 50th cycle is 91 % for Sn/CMS composite containing 22% tin, against 428 mAh g −1 at the first cycle. With further increase in tin content, the capacity fade upon cycling is more rapid.
A Robust Integrated SnOx/Carbon Composite Anode for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Tin (Sn) has been considered as a promising anode material for sodium ion battery due to its high specific capacity. However, its poor cycling stability and rate performance hinders the real application. Inspired by the structure of reinforced concrete and tunnel, an integrated SnOx/carbon composite anode was designed for high performance sodium ion batteries. In this structure, the SnOx nanoparticles were embedded in the amorphous carbon with interconnected pores derived from carbonization of the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and starch, where the amorphous carbon can buffer the bulk expansion of SnOx to maintain structural stability and the interconnected pores can store the electrolyte to promote the sodium ion transportation for high rate reaction of the SnOx particles with sodium ion. The reduced graphene oxide as robust framework similar with rebar is inserted into the amorphous carbon/SnOx composite to enhance the stability and conductivity of composite. The starch as pore-creating additive is decomposed during high-heat treatment to form interconnected tunnel-like pores in SnOx/carbon composite for electrolyte storage and high efficient sodium ion transportation. As a result, the as-prepared integrated SnOx/carbon composite anode shows outstanding rate and cycling performance. Constructing the interconnected pore in SnOx/carbon composite using starch can greatly improve its charge specific capacity and rate performance.

Abstract:Sn is used as an anode material in lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity, conductivity, and safety. However, due to the huge volume change during charging and discharging, it suffers serious mechanical degradation, and the capacity rapidly decays. In this study, a simple and feasible strategy was used to electroplate Sn on Cu foam, followed by heat treatment to obtain Sn composite anodes (Sn/Cu3Sn/CuO/SnO). The composite anode served to mitigate the volumetric expansion that was a consequence of the lithiation-delithiation process. It also prevented electrode pulverization and ensured that the overall integrity of the electrode was maintained, thereby enhancing its electrochemical performance. The capacity of the electrode reached 653.56 mAh/g at a current density of 0.2 C after 300 charge-discharge cycles. Thus, the prepared composite materials had a high capacity and long-term cyclic stability.
Advanced Structures in Electrodeposited Tin Base Anodes for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:A novel composite anode material consisted of electrodeposited Sn dispersing in a conductive micro-porous carbon membrane, which was directly coated on Cu current collector, was investigated. The composite material was prepared by: (1) casting a polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/dimethylformamide (DMF) solution that contained silica particles on a copper foil, (2) removing the solvent by evaporation, (3) dissolving the silica particles by immersing the copper foil into an alkaline solution, (4) drying the copper foil coated by micro-porous membrane, (5) electrodepositing Sn onto the copper foil through the micro-pores in the micro-porous membrane, and (6) annealing as-obtained composite material. This method provided the composite material with high decentralization of Sn and supporting medium purpose of conductive carbon membrane deriving from pyrolysis of PAN. SEM, XRD and EDS analysis confirmed this structure. The characteristic structure was beneficial to inhibit the aggregation between Sn micro-particles, to relax the volume expansion during cycling, and to improve the cycleability of electrode. Galvanostatic tests indicated the discharge capacity of the composite material remained over 550 mAh g−1 and 71.4% of charge retention after 30 cycles, while that of the electrode prepared by electrodepositing Sn on a bare Cu foil decreased seriously to 82.5 mAh g−1 and 13%. These results show that the composite material is a promising anode material with larger specific capacity and long cycle life for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract: composites as anode materials in Lithium-ion battery have attracted intensive interest due to the inherent high capacity. On the other side, the high atomic ratio (Li4.4Sn) induces the pulverization of the electrode with cycling. Thus, suppressing pulverization by designing the structure of the materials is an essential key for improving cyclability. Applying the nanotechnologies such as electrospinning, soft/hard nano template strategy, surface modification, multi-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and so on has demonstrated the huge advantage on this aspect. These strategies are generally used for homogeneous dispersing Sn nanomaterials in graphene matrix or constructing the voids in the inner of the materials to obtain the mechanical buffer effect. Unfortunately, these processes induce huge energy consumption and complicated operation.To solve the issue, new nanotechnology for the composites by the bottom-up strategy (Organic Molecule Confinement Reaction (OMCR)) was shown in this report. A 3D organic nanoframes was synthesized as a graphene precursor by low energy nano emulsification and photopolymerization. SnO2 organic nanoframes as the composites precursor were in-situ formed in the hydrothermal reaction. After the redox process by the calcination, the Sn nanoparticles with nanovoids (∼100 nm, uniform size) were homogeneously dispersed in a Two-Dimensional Laminar Matrix of graphene nanosheets (2DLMG) by the in-situ patterning and confinement effect from the 3D organic nanoframes. The pulverization and crack of the composites were effectively suppressed, which was proved by the electrochemical testing. The Sn G not delivered just the high cyclability during 200 cycles, but also firstly achieved a high specific capacity (539 mAh g-1) at the low loading Sn (19.58 wt.%).

Abstract:Silicon monoxide is a promising anode candidate because of its high theoretical capacity and good cycle performance. To solve the problems associated with this material, including large volume changes during charge-discharge processes, we report a ternary hierarchical silicon oxide-nickel-graphite composite prepared by a facile two-step ball-milling method. The composite consists of nano-Si dispersed silicon oxides embedded in nano-Ni/graphite matrices (Si@SiOx /Ni/graphite). In the composite, crystalline nano-Si particles are generated by the mechanochemical reduction of SiO by ball milling with Ni. These nano-Si dispersed oxides have abundant electrochemical activity and can provide high Li-ion storage capacity. Furthermore, the milled nano-Ni/graphite matrices stick well to active materials and interconnect to form a crosslinked framework, which functions as an electrical highway and a mechanical backbone so that all silicon oxide particles become electrochemically active. Owing to these advanced structural and electrochemical characteristics, the composite enhances the utilization efficiency of SiO, accommodates its large volume expansion upon cycling, and has good ionic and electronic conductivity. The composite electrodes thus exhibit substantial improvements in electrochemical performance. This ternary hierarchical Si@SiOx /Ni/graphite composite is a promising candidate anode material for high-energy lithium-ion batteries. Additionally, the mechanochemical ball-milling method is low cost and easy to reproduce, indicating potential for the commercial production of the composite materials.

Abstract:Tin-based materials possess a high-capacity as a potential anode for Na-ion batteries (SIBs), but the inferior electric conductivity and sluggish reaction kinetics limit their further development. In this paper, we have successfully constructed multiphase structure SnO 2 /SnS/SnS 2 by combining the electrochemical induction and in-situ hydrothermal method to effectively alleviate these problems. The continuous addition of sulfur source (thioacetamide, TAA) results in the formation of a transition from pure product (SnO 2 ) to double structure (SnO 2 /SnS), and finally multiphase structure (SnO 2 /SnS/SnS 2 ). Compared to single or bimetal chalcogenides, the tri-metal chalcogenides have strengthened synergistic effects between diverse components. Additionally, the SnO 2 /SnS/SnS 2 composites exhibit small grain size and abundant mesoporous structure, which aid to shorten the distance of ions transfer and increase surface active sites for Na-ions storage. The SnO 2 /SnS/SnS 2 anode displays optimal diffusion coefficient (1.94 × 10 −15 cm 2 s −1 ) and cycling durability, with a recoverable specific discharge ability of 401 mA h g −1 over 100 cycles at 100 mA g −1 and a maintenance overpasses 77 %. These results indicate that the construction of multiphase structures is a prospective way to improve the reaction kinetics of Sn-based materials for SIBs.

Preparation of SnO_2-Gn-C Ternary Composite and its Electrochemical Performance as Anode Material of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:SnO2-graphene-carbon(SnO2-Gn-C)ternary composite was synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal method and utilized as anode material in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.The crystal structure,morphology and electrochemical performance of SnO2-Gn-C composite were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction(XRD),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),and electrochemical measurements.The effects of reaction temperature and the molar ratio of Sn/Gn on electrochemical performance have been also investigated.The experimental results indicate that initial specific discharge capacity of SnO2-Gn-C composite at a current density of 200mA·g-1 reaches 1 225mA·h·g-1 and the composite can deliver a specific capacity of 229mA·h·g-1 after 50charge-discharge cycles.The excellent electrochemical performance of SnO2-Gn-C composite may be mainly due to high dispersion of SnO2 nanoparticles on graphene of large specific surface area,high conductivity of graphene and carbon,and alleviative volume expansion resulting from carbon coating.

Abstract:Recently, SnS2 has obtained considerable attention for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) as anode materials because of their high theoretical capacities. However, the large capacity loss and poor conductivity during the charge-discharge process need to be solved urgently. In this work, the synthesis of the SnS2/MWCNTs nanocomposites has been designed and proposed to be an anode for SIBs. We can find that the incorporation of MWCNTs not only promote the aggregation and reduce the separation of SnS2, but also reduce the loss of SnS2 nanoparticles, and thus generating large size nanoparticles. Furthermore, XPS and TGA results reveal that the bonds between MWCNTs and SnS2 nanoparticles enhance the structural stability of SnS2/MWCNTs nanocomposites, prevent the aggregation, and effectively buffer the volume changes of the SnS2/MWCNTs nanocomposites during the charge-discharge process. Consequently, the performance is significantly reinforced, which could be ascribed to the synergistic effects of SnS2/MWCNTs nanocomposites, especially for the 0.015 g sample. This work offers an easy route to boost the electrochemical energy storage performance of SIBs.
