Abstract:This study was purposed to investigate the effects of magnetic nanoparticle of Fe3O4 (Fe3O4-MNPs) on murine immune system. ICR mice were assigned randomly into four groups which were treated with normal saline, low, middle and high dose of MNP-Fe3O4 respectively. The mice were killed after being exposed by intragastric administration for 2 weeks. The ratios of spleen weight to body weight, lymphocyte transformation rate in spleen suspension and phagocytic index of macrophage in abdominal cavity were detected. The results showed that the ratios of spleen weight to body weight in Fe3O4-MNP groups were not significantly different in comparison with the control (p > 0.05). The lymphocyte transformation rate in spleen suspension in Fe3O4-MNP groups were all higher than that in control group (-0.1775 +/- 0.0246), especially in the middle dose group (0.1833 +/- 0.0593) (p < 0.05), and the phagocytic index of macrophages in abdominal cavity of middle dose group (0.2051 +/- 0.0213) was higher than that of control group and other two Fe3O4-MNP group (low dose 0.1538 +/- 0.0100, high dose 0.1511 +/- 0.0184) (p < 0.05). It is concluded that suitable dose of Fe3O4-MNP can enhance the cellular immune activity and phagocytic function of macrophages of mice.

Abstract:We investigated the effect of magnetic nanoparticles of Fe3O4 (Fe3O4-MNPs) on the mice immune system. Imprinting control region (ICR) mice were assigned randomly into four groups and treated with normal saline or low, medium, or high doses of Fe3O4 -MNPs, respectively. After intravenous administration of Fe3O4-MNPs for 72 hours, the peripheral T cells and the induction of primary immune responses in mice were investigated by flow cytometry and determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. The results showed that the ratio of spleen to body weight was not different between the experimental groups and control group (P > 0.05). The lymphocyte transformation rates in the suspension of spleen were higher in low-dose group than those in the control group (P < 0.05), while the proliferation of splenocytes was low in the medium and high groups when compared to the control group (P < 0.05). In peripheral blood, both the proportions of subset CD4(+) and CD8(+) T lymphocytes in the low-dose group were higher than those in the control group, whereas there was no difference in the number of CD4(+) T cells between the medium-and low-dose groups. Interestingly, the Fe3O4-MNPs enhanced the production of interleukin-2 (IL-2), interferon-gamma, and IL-10 but did not affect the production of IL-4 in peripheral blood. It is concluded that Fe3O4 -MNPs could influence immune functions of normal ICR mice in a dose-dependent manner.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to study the changes inhibited T lymphocytes and cytokines related to the cellular immunity in ICR (imprinting control region) mice fed with Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4-MNPs). The Fe3O4-MNPs were synthesized, and their characteristics such as particle size, zeta potential, and X-ray diffraction patterns were measured and determined. All ICR mice were sacrificed after being exposed to 0, 300, 600, and 1200 mg/kg of Fe3O4-MNPs by single gastric administration for 14 days. Splenocytes proliferation was indicated with stimulate index by MTT assay; release of cytokines in the serum of ICR mice was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the phenotypic analyses of T-lymphocyte subsets were performed using flow cytometry. Our results indicated that there were no significant differences in splenocyte proliferation and release of cytokines between exposed and control groups. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the proportions of T-lymphocyte subsets in the low-dose Fe3O4-MNPs group when compared to the control group, but the proportions of CD3(+)CD4(+) and CD3(+)CD8(+) T-lymphocyte subsets both in the medium-and high-dose Fe3O4-MNPs groups were higher than those in the control group. It is concluded that a high dose of Fe3O4-MNPs, to some extent, could influence in vivo immune function of normal ICR mice.
Effects of DMSA-coated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles on global gene expression of mouse macrophage RAW264.7 cells.

Abstract:Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) coated with 2,3-dimercaptosuccinnic acid (DMSA) are considered to be a promising nanomaterial with biocompatibility. In the present study, the effects of DMSA-coated Fe3O4 MNPs on the expression of all identified mouse genes, which regulate various cellular biological processes, were determined to establish whether this nanoparticle is cytotoxic to mammalian cells. Mouse macrophage RAW264.7 cells were treated with 100 mu g/ml of DMSA-coated Fe3O4 MNPs for 4, 24 and 48h. and the global gene expression was detected via Affymetrix Mouse Genome 430 2.0 GeneChips (R) microarrays. It was found that gene expression of 711, 545 and 434 transcripts was significantly altered by 4-, 24- and 48-h treatments, respectively. Of these genes, 27 were consistently upregulated and 6 were consistently downregulated at the three treatment durations. Bioinformatic analysis of all differentially expressed genes revealed that this nanoparticle can strongly activate inflammatory and immune responses and can inhibit the biosynthesis and metabolism of RAW264.7 cells at a dose of 100 mu g/ml. These results demonstrated that DMSA-coated Fe3O4 MNPs display cytotoxicity in this type of macrophage at high doses. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Objective To determine whether the magnetic Nano-Fe3O4 and Nano-Au can reverse the resistance of K562/A02 cells or not.Methods MTT was used to examine the effects of daunomycin with and without the magnetic Nano-Fe3O4 or Nano-Au on K562 and K562/A02 cells.The intracellular free daunomycin concentration and the apoptosis percentage of the K562/A02 cells were measured by flow cytometry and fluorescent microscope.Results Nano-Fe3O4 or Nano-Au at a 25% volumn ratio raised the intracellular daunomycin accumulation of the K562/A02 cells and induced more apoptosis percentage.Conclusion The Nano-Fe3O4 or Nano-Au with daunomycin can reverse the resistance of K562/A02 cells significantly.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To study the influence of native bacterial magnetic particles on mouse immune response. METHODS Ovalbumin was used as an antigen, mixed with complete Freund's adjuvant, bacterial magnetic particles (BMP) and phosphate buffer solution, to immunize BALB/C mouse. After 14 days later, we detected the titers of the antiovalbumin (IgG) and subtype (IgG1, IgG2a) , the proliferation ability of T lymphocyte, and the expression of IL-2, IL4, IL-10 and IFN-gamma. RESULTS Compared to the negative control group, the BMP group had the similar level in the titer of specific antibody, the proliferation ability of T lymphocyte and the expression of cytokines (IL-2, IL-4, IL-10 and IFN-gamma). CONCLUSION Native BMPs has no significantly influence on mouse immune response.
In Vitro Inhibition of Tumor Growth by Low-Dose Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Activating Macrophages.

Abstract:Macrophages as immunocyte are attracting more and more attention in cancer therapy. Our previous study observed that dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA)-coated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles triggered comprehensive immune responses of mouse macrophages (RAW264.7 cells) and induced production of many kinds of cytokines. This study investigated the effects of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles on RAW264.7 cells proliferation, migration, and inhibition of tumor growth in vitro. Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles had an average size of about 11 nm with good dispersibility and uniformity. Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles internalized efficiently into RAW264.7 cells. Through Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) detection, the proliferation of RAW264.7 cells significantly increased by the low-dose Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (50 µg/mL) treatment. The results of wound-healing and Transwell assays both displayed a significant promotion of the RAW264.7 cells migratory capability compared with control group ( P<0.01). It is interesting to find that a large number of proliferated RAW264.7 cells were activated to surround quickly and attack mouse liver cancer cell (Hepa1-6) cells by Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles. The growth of Hepa1-6 cells was effectively inhibited according to microscope imaging and flow cytometry analysis. The inhibition may be cooperative effects of RAW264.7 cells proliferation, migration, and immune activation. The results suggest potential clinical value of low-dose iron oxide nanomaterials in cancer therapy.
Effects of Fe3O4 Nanoparticles on the Transcription of Genes with Iron-Responsive Elements

Abstract:In this paper, we checked the transcription of 24 murine genes containing iron-responsive elements in Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles treated mouse macrophage RAW264.7 cells using cDNA microarrays and real time-PCR. The results showed that only 7 genes differentially expressed (fold change < -1.5 or > 1.5) after incubated with 100 mu g/ml Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles. Gene Ontology analysis of these genes containing iron-responsive elements demonstrated that the differentially expressed genes, including Tfrc, Slc11a2 and Slc40a1, played a crucial role in iron ion homeostasis. And the non-differentially expressed genes (-1.5< fold change < 1.5) were related to cell biosynthesis and metabolism, including acetyl-CoA metabolic process, peptide metabolic process, and macromolecule catabolic process.
Preparation of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and its influence on the viscera of ICR mice

Abstract:Objective To investigate the preparation of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles(Fe3O4-MNPs) and its influence on the histology of mice.Methods The Fe3O4-MNPs were synthesized by chemical precipitation and the characteristics were detected and analyzed with transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.The mice were assigned into 4 groups(10 mice each) and fed with different doses of Fe3O4-MNPs(0,300,600,1200 mg/kg).On th 14th day after feeding,the skin,liver,spleen and intestinum crassum were taken out for the observation of histopathologic changes.ResultsThe appearance of Fe3O4-MNPs was spherical with a narrow diameter distribution and the average particle size of Fe3O4-MNPs was 15 nm observed under TEM.There were no obvious histopathologic differences among 4 groups.Conclusion Fe3O4-MNPs with excellent properties have been successfully prepared by chemical precipitation.Fe3O4-MNPs in a certain range of doses have no remarkable toxic effect on visceral organs of mice.
Internalization of DMSA-Coated Fe3O4 Magnetic Nanoparticles into Mouse Macrophage Cells

Abstract:This study observed the internalization of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) coated with meso-2, -3-dimercaptosuccinnic acid (DMSA) into mouse macrophage RAW264.7 by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Prussian blue staining. The results showed that the DMSA-coated Fe3O4 MNPs could be efficiently internalized into RAW264.7 cells. The internalized DMSA-coated Fe3O4 MNPs located in the cytoplasmic inclusions. The internalization of DMSA-coated Fe3O4 MNPs did not significantly affect the cell viability at given doses (20, 30, 40, 50 and 100 μg/mL) and incubation times (2, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours), suggesting DMSA-coated Fe3O4 MNPs had better biocompatibility. This study demonstrated that DMSA-coated Fe3O4 MNPs may provide a potential nanomaterial for biomedical applications.

Abstract:With the wide applications of magnetic fields (MFs) in medicine, researchers from different disciplines have gained interest in understanding the effect of various types of MFs on living cells and organisms. In this paper, we mainly focus on the immunological and physical aspects of the immune responses and their mechanisms under different types of MFs. Immune cells were slightly affected by low-frequency alternating MFs but were strongly influenced by moderate-intensity MFs and high-gradient MFs (HGMFs). Larger immune cells, such as macrophages, were more sensitive to HGMFs, which biased the cell polarization into the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. Subject to the gradient forces of varying directions and strength, the elongated M2 macrophage also remodeled the cytoskeleton with actin polymerization and changed the membrane receptors and ion channel gating. These alterations were very similar to changes caused by the small GTPase RhoA interference in macrophage. Regulation of iron metabolism may also contribute to the MF effects in macrophages. High MFs were found to regulate the iron content in monocyte-/macrophage-derived osteoclasts by affecting the expression of iron-regulation genes. On the other hand, paramagnetic nanoparticles (NPs) combined with external MFs play an important role in T-cell immunity. Paramagnetic NP-coated T-cells can cluster their T-cell receptors (TCRs) by using an external MF, thus increasing the cell–cell contact and communication followed by enhanced tumor killing capacity. The external MF can also guide the adoptively transferred magnetic NP-coated T-cells to their target sites <i>in vivo</i>, thus dramatically increasing the efficiency of cell therapy. Additionally, iron oxide NPs for ferroptosis-based cancer therapy and other MF-related therapeutic applications with obstacles were also addressed. Furthermore, for a profound understanding of the effect of MFs on immune cells, multidisciplinary research involving both experimental research and theoretical modeling is essential.

Abstract:Background: This study explored the pharmacokinetic parameters and tissue distribution of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 MNPs) in imprinting control region (ICR) mice. Methods: The Fe3O4 MNPs were synthesized by chemical coprecipitation, and their morphology and appearance were observed by transmission electron microscopy. ICR mice were divided into a control group and a Fe3O4 MNP-treated group. Probable target organs in ICR mice were observed, and the pharmacokinetic parameters and biodistribution of Fe3O4 MNPs in tissues were identified using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results: Fe3O4 MNPs were spherical with a well distributed particle diameter, and were distributed widely in various target organs and tissues including the heart, liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys, brain, stomach, small intestine, and bone marrow. The majority of Fe3O4 MNPs were distributed to the liver and the spleen. Fe3O4 MNP levels in brain tissue were higher in the Fe3O4 MNP-treated group than in the control group, indicating that Fe3O4 MNPs can penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Conclusion: These results suggest that the distribution of Fe3O4 MNPs was mostly in the liver and spleen, so the curative effect of these compounds could be more pronounced for liver tumors. Furthermore, Fe3O4 MNPs might be used as drug carriers to overcome physiologic barriers.

Abstract:This study aims to evaluate the multidrug resistance (MDR) reversal activity by magnetic nanoparticles of Fe3O4 (MNPs-Fe3O4) and 5-bromotetrandrine (BrTet) MDR cell line K562/A02 solitarily or symphysially. The proliferation of K562 and K562/A02 cells and the cytotoxicity on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PMBCs) were evaluated by MTT assay. Cellular accumulation of daunorubicin (DNR) was analyzed by flow cytometry. Real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting analyses were performed to examine the mRNA and protein levels of mdr1, respectively. The results showed that the combination of MNPs-Fe3O4 and BrTet with effective concentrations significantly increased cytotoxicity against MDR cell line K562/A02. Both BrTet and MNPs-Fe3O4 increased the intracellular DNR accumulation in the K562/A02 cell line, and downregulated the level of mdr1 gene and expression of P-glycoprotein. Furthermore, the combination did not have significant cytotoxicity in PMBCs. We propose that MNPs-Fe3O4 conjugated with DNR and BrTet probably have synergetic effects on MDR reversal.

Abstract:agnetic particles have unique features and are being used in biological and medical science such as drug targeting, diagnosis and therapy. We have developed technologies that enable magnetic particle to be changed from microscale to nanoscale, and the latter are termed magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). Currently, biomedical applications of MNPs have received growing attention due to their remarkable properties. Nanoparticles are widely used for drug delivery, heating mediators for cancer thermotherapy (hyperthermia), gene therapy etc. The MNPs also have the potential for application in these fields. Since MNPs can be used as an intracellular magnetic marker, they are also attractive for cellular and targeted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Abstract:Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) controlled by alternating mangetic field (AMF) are widely investigated in biomedical applications, while the effects of strong static magnetic field (SMFs) on mammalian cells with MNPs for drug-delivery, magnetic resource imaging and magnetofection have been evaluated poorly. Although surface modifications provide a suitable system for expanding the bioapplication of MNPs, the viability and the cellular internalization of modified MNPs which stands for their biocompatibility and efficiency in application need to be examined urgently. In present study, human lung cancer cells (A549), a well-known epithelial cell model for drug metabolism research, were used to evaluate the effects of strong SMFs on cellular internalization and cell viability of Fe3O4 MNPs modified by chitosan, dextran, polyacrylamide, polyethylene glycol, phosphatidylcholine, cationic-charged and anionic-charged. The cationic-charged and phosphatidylcholine-coated Fe3O4 MNPs could increase the cellular uptaken in a dose dependent manner and the particles caused a vacuolar appearance in A549 cells. With exposure to 8.5 T SMF, the assay of ATP content showed that anionic-charged and phosphatidylcholine-coated Fe3O4 MNPs changed the energy metabolism of A549 cells, which might be consistent with the observation in cellular internalization. The cell viability and proliferation of A549 cells were all slightly affected by various modified MNPs with or without 8.5 T SMF exposure.

Abstract:In this study, we have explored the possibility of the combination of the high reactivity of nano Fe3O4 or An nanoparticles and daunomycin, one of the most important antitumor drugs in the treatment of acute leukemia clinically, to inhibit MDR of K562/A02 cells. Initially, to determine whether the magnetic nanoparticle Fe3O4 and Au can facilitate the anticancer drug to reverse the resistance of cancer cells, we have explored the cytotoxic effect of daunomycin (DNR) with and without the magnetic nano-Fe3O4 or nano-Au on K562 and K562/A02 cells by MTT assay. Besides, the intracellular DNR concentration and apoptosis of the K562/A02 cells was further investigated by flow cytometry and confocal fluorescence microscopic studies. The MDR1 gene expression of the K562/A02 cells was also studied by RT-PCR method. Our results indicate that 5.0 x 10(-7) M nano-Fe3O4 or 2.0 x 10(-8) M nano-Au is biocompatible and can apparently raise the intracellular DNR accumulation of the K562/A02 cells and increase the apoptosis of tumor cells. Moreover, our observations illustrate that although these two kinds of nanoparticles themselves could not lower the MDR1 gene expression of the K562/A02 cells, yet they could degrade the MDR1 gene level when combining with anticancer drug DNR. This raises the possibility to combine the nano-Fe3O4 or nano-Au with DNR to reverse the drug resistance of K562/A02 cells, which could offer a new strategy for the promising efficient chemotherapy of the leukemia patients.
Daunorubicin Loaded Magnetic Nanoparticles of Fe3O4 Greatly Enhance the Responses to Chemotherapy and Induce Apoptosis of Multidrug-Resistant K562 Cells in a Human-Nude Mice Xenograft Leukemia Model

Abstract:Abstract Object: To the effect of Fe3O4-magnetic nanoparticle loaded with DNR on multidrugresistant K562 cells in vivo. Methods: K562-n and its MDR counterpart K562-n/VCR cell were inoculated subcutaneously into both sides of the back of nude mice (5×106 cells/each) to establish a human leukemia xenograft model. The mice were randomly divided into group A receiving normal saline every other day for 20days, group B receiving DNR every other day for 20days, group C receiving Fe3O4-magnetic nanoparticle every other day for 20days, group D receiving Fe3O4-magnetic nanoparticle loaded with DNR every other day for 20days, and group E receiving Fe3O4-magnetic nanoparticle containing DNR every other day for 20days with a magnetic field built on the surface of the tumor tissue. The tumor volume was measured on the day 1, 5, 9, 13, 17 and 21d after the first treatment. Tumor tissues were isolated for examination of the expression of mdr-1, bcl-2, bax and caspase-3 by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. Results: For K562-n/VCR tumor, the tumor volume was markedly lower in groups D and E than in groups A, B and C (group D or E vs group A, B or C, P < 0.05). The transcription of mdr-1 and Bcl-2 gene was significantly lower in groups D and E than in groups A, B and C (group D or E vs group A, B or C, P < 0.05). So did the protein expression of Bcl-2. However, there were no differences among these groups about the protein expression of P-gp. The protein and mRNA expressions of Bax and Caspase-3 in groups D and E were increased significantly compared with groups A, B and C (group D or E vs group A, B or C, P < 0.05). The tumor volume of K562-n was markedly lower in groups C, D and E than in groups A and B (group C, D or E vs group A or B, P < 0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, DNR loaded Fe3O4-magnetic nanoparticles can suppress the growth and induce apoptosis further on the MDR K562-n/VCR tumor in vivo compared to DNR alone but not on the K562-n tumor. The external magnetic field failed to improve the antitumor effect.
Effect of Magnetic Nanoparticles of Fe3O4 and Wogonin on the Reversal of Multidrug Resistance in K562/A02 Cell Line.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Multidrug resistance is the main obstacle to the efficiency of systemic chemotherapy against hematologic malignancy. This study investigated the reversible effect of the copolymer wogonin and daunorubicin coloaded into Fe(3)O(4) magnetic nanoparticles, and the mechanism potentially involved.METHODS:The growth inhibition rate of K562/A02 cells was investigated by MTT assay, and apoptosis of cells and the intracellular daunorubicin concentration were detected by flow cytometry. Distribution of nanoparticles taken up by K562/A02 cells was observed under a transmission electron microscope and demonstrated by Prussian blue staining. The transcription level of MDR1 mRNA and expression of P-glycoprotein were determined by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting assay, respectively.RESULTS:The reversible effect of daunorubicin-wogonin magnetic nanoparticles was 8.87-fold that of daunorubicin + wogonin and of daunorubicin magnetic nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy and Prussian blue staining revealed that the nanoparticles were located in the endosome vesicles of cytoplasm. Also, the apoptosis rate and accumulation of intracellular daunorubicin in the daunorubicin-wogonin magnetic nanoparticle group were significantly higher than that in the daunorubicin, daunorubicin + wogonin, and daunorubicin magnetic nanoparticle groups. Furthermore, transcription of MDR1 mRNA and expression of P-glycoprotein in K562/A02 cells were significantly downregulated in the daunorubicin-wogonin magnetic nanoparticle group compared with the other groups.CONCLUSION:These findings suggest that the remarkable effects of the novel daunorubicin-wogonin magnetic nanoparticle formulation on multidrug resistant K562/A02 leukemia cells would be a promising strategy for overcoming multidrug resistance.
Influence on bionomics of endothelial progenitor cells labeling with magnetic nanoparticles

Abstract:Objective To explore the influence of home synthesize magnetic iron oxide (called Fe2O3-PLL) labeling on peripheral blood endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) bionomics to provide experimental foundation for MR imaging ex and in vivo. Methods Fe2O3 was incubated with PLL for 2 hours to obtain a complex of Fe2O3-PLL. Rabbit peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated and EPCs were selected by adherence method. Fe2O3-PLL was used to label EPCs. Prussian blue stain and electron microscope was used for showing intracellular iron. MTT assay was assessed to evaluate the difference of growth curve between unlabeled and labeled with 25 mg/L Fe2O3-PLL. Flow cytometry was performed to analyze cell cycle, cell apoptosis and the expression of surface markers of labeled and unlabeled cells. Expressions of Enos, KDR and Vwf at Mrna levels among unlabeled and labeled EPCs were detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Calcium ion channel and membrane fluidity were observed and analyzed by laser confocal microscopy. Statistical analyses were used with ANOVA and t test. Results Almost 100% cells were labeled by Fe2O3-PLL, iron-containing vesicles were intracytoplasma. There was no statistical difference in cells growth curve, cell life cycle [(93.74±3.52)% ,(94.57±3.66)% ] and cell apoptosis rate(12. 89±1.81) %, (11.67±1.18) %) between labeling with Fe2O3-PLL at a concentration of 25 mg/L and unlabeled cells (t = 0. 283, P > O. 05 ; t = 0. 977, P > 0. 05). There was also no statistical difference in relative amount of Enos, KDR and Vwf at Mrna levels and the expression of sudace phenotypic markers (CD34, CD106, CD146 and KDR) between two groups (P > 0. 05). In addition,Labeling had little influence on calcium ion channel and didn't significantly alter cell membrane fluidity.Conclusions The rabbit peripberal blood EPCs can be effective labeled with Fe2O3-PLL and without significant influence on cells bionomics at a low concentration of 25 mg/L. Almost every cell can be labeled and the labeled cells can be used further.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of moderate static magnetic field (SMF, 0.2-0.4 T) on experimental murine leukemia and its possible mechanism. As in vivo and in vitro models, normal mice, mice bearing L1210 tumor and L1210 cell line were exposed to moderate SMF, respectively. The results showed that the average lifetime of mice bearing L1210 was prolonged to 12 days by SMF, but just 6 days in the unexposure group. After being exposed to SMF for 10 days, the spleen and thymus index of normal mice increased. The L1210 cell proliferation was suppressed by SMF within the first 3 days but enhanced in the following 2 days. These results suggested that the regulating effects of SMF on immune functions may have potential contribution to tumor therapy.
