Abstract:Polymeric absorbents were surface-engineered with photocatalysts for simultaneous adsorption and degradation of organic wastes in water using a facile Pickering emulsion polymerization method. This facile strategy not only overcome the low light energy utilization of traditional photocatalysts-polymer nanocomposites due to the core-shell structure, but also could convenient control the microstructure of the photocatalysts owing to the separated preparation procedure when compared to the direct growth method. Firstly, binary bismuth oxyhalide composed as BiOI0.5Cl0.5 was chosen to engineered polymeric absorbents due to its higher photodegradation efficiency especially. After the emulsification and polymerization process, BiOI0.5Cl0.5 acting as the stabilizer would be fixed on the surface of the functional polymeric absorbents to form PA@BiOI0.5Cl0.5. Batch experiments were lunched using phenol as the test substance, the results shown that PA@BiOI0.5Cl0.5 could remove phenol completely within a short time and could be reused without any treatments with a simultaneous adsorption and degradation process. Furthermore, polymeric absorbents were engineered with commercial TiO2 to prove the generality of this strategy.
Enriched Adsorption and Photocatalytic Fenton Catalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants by CuBi2O4 Loaded Non-Metallic Modified Graphene Composite Hydrogels

Abstract:Adsorption and advanced oxidation technology are important means to remove organic pollutants, and the combination of adsorption and catalytic degradation to construct a multi-field coupled system can realize valid adsorption and degradation of organic contaminants. In this paper, CuBi2O4 supported by a nonmetallic element-modified graphene hydrogel composite structure CuBi2O4/X-rGH (X = N, P, S, B) was synthesized and applied to the efficient removal of organic pollutants. We found that the doping of nonmetallic elements enhances the graphene conjugated large π-bond system, which not only improves the adsorption performance of pollutants but also increases the graphene conductivity and builds more carrier transport channels, which is beneficial to the photocatalytic Fenton synergistic degradation activity. Among them, CuBi2O4/P-rGH could achieve 90 % degradation of phenol (50 ppm) after 20 min of turning on the light, which was nearly 2 times more than the degradation activity of CuBi2O4/rGH. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments proved that ·OH was the main active species in the synergistic degradation process, and the mechanism of adsorption of nonmetallic modified graphene hydrogel hybrid catalysts and in situ photocatalytic Fenton degradation of pollutants was proposed.

Abstract:: In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were applied to address the major concerns about the independent and competitive adsorption processes of phenolic organic pollutants (POPs) on the graphene oxide (GO) in aqueous solution. Phenol, α -naphthol and 4-octyl-phenol were adopted as representatives of POPs and their adsorption energies were calculated, which followed an order of 4-octyl-phenol (41.34 kJ/mol)> α -naphthol (33.23 kJ/mol)> phenol (19.31 kJ/mol). The simulation results showed that hydrophobic properties of POPs were recognized as the driving force for their adsorption behaviors. Moreover, van der Waals interaction, electrostatic interaction, as well as hydrogen bonds, may also improve the adsorption capacity of GO towards POPs. The competitive adsorption process revealed that in addition to the direct adsorption onto the GO surface, the molecular aggregation may be another indi-rect adsorption way existed in the mixed system. Understanding the interaction between GO and POPs in aqueous so-278 lution is critical to the design and application of graphene-based materials and our findings are believed to contribute further theoretical basis to the engineering treatment of POPs-containing waste water.
Cubi2o4 Surface-Modified Three-Dimensional Graphene Hydrogel Adsorption and In-Situ Photocatalytic Fenton Synergistic Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Abstract:A CuBi2O4/rGH composite catalyst was prepared by modifying CuBi2O4 on the surface of a three-dimensional graphene hydrogel (rGH) via a simple water bath method. The large specific surface area and particular surface adsorption properties of rGH were beneficial for adsorbing and enriching pollutant molecules and could then be further degraded by the in situ photocatalytic Fenton synergistic effect with the addition of H2O2. The introduction of graphene not only increases the surface area and improves the adsorption properties but also accelerates the transfer and separation efficiency of the interface photogenerated charge, thereby promoting the photocatalytic Fenton degradation performance. The adsorption performance and catalytic degradation perfor-mance of the 20 % CuBi2O4/rGH composite for phenol were 1.4 and 1.3 times higher than those of CuBi2O4, respectively. Meanwhile, the removal efficiency of phenol in the adsorption and in situ photocatalytic Fenton synergistic system was as high as 80 % within 20 min. In addition, the cross-linked network structure of the 3D graphene hydrogel could be better recycled, which has significant potential in practical applications. Quenching and EPR experimental results showed that hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) were the most active species in the synergistic degradation process, and the mechanism of CuBi2O4/rGH adsorption and in situ photocatalytic Fenton degradation was proposed.

Abstract:This study presents a 3D hierarchically ordered porous carbon material (HOPC) that simultaneously achieves efficient adsorption of a range of water pollutants as well as catalytic oxidation of adsorbed pollutants. High adsorption capacity and rapid adsorption kinetics are attributed to the hydrophobic nature of the carbon substrate, the large surface area due to high porosity, and the relatively uniform size of pores that comprise the structure. The oxidative degradation is achieved by efficient mediation of electron transfer from pollutants to persulfate through the sp(2)-hybridized carbon and nitrogen network. As the persulfate activation and pollutant oxidation do not involve reactive radicals, oxidative degradation of the adsorbent is prevented, which has been a primary concern when adsorption and oxidation are combined either to regenerate adsorbate or to enhance oxidation performance. Batch tests showed that near complete removal of various recalcitrant micropollutants can be achieved within a short time (less than 1 min) even when treating a complex water matrix, as pollutants are concentrated on the surface of HOPC, where their oxidation is catalyzed.

Abstract:Solar-driven photocatalysis offers an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach for the degradation of organic pollutants in water without chemical additives, but the low specific surface area and adsorption capacity of common photocatalysts restricts the surface reactions with the contaminants. Herein, we hypercrosslinked polymer layers on TiO2-graphene surface to enlarge the specific surface area from 136 to 988 m2/g, leading to a high adsorption capacity of sulfadiazine as 54.3 mg/g, which is 15.5 times that of TiO2-graphene (3.5 mg/g). The adsorption kinetics reveals the combination of physical and chemical adsorption by porous benzene-based polymer for sulfadiazine enrichment. Besides, the polymer layers with broad light absorption enable the composite to function efficiently as visible-light-driven photocatalysts. Thus, the as-designed composite exhibits excellent performance for sulfadiazine removal by integrating the adsorptive and photocatalytic processes, especially for the diluted sulfadiazine solution. More importantly, the porous polymer layer can function as a filter for weakening the interference of TiO2 surface with the natural matters from complex water matrices. Based on the identification of dominant reactive species, the possible attacking pathway and the sulfadiazine subsequent degradation are presented. Further, the enhanced adsorption and photodegradation efficiency can also be achieved for the removal of other typical pollutants such as 4-chlorophenol and methylene blue. This study highlights an adsorption-enhanced-degradation mechanism for water pollutants that can direct the design of high-performance photocatalysts under visible light.

Abstract:A versatile composite adsorbent combination of chitosan and graphene oxide (CS-GO) has been prepared by self-assembly method. This well-obtained adsorbent has amphoteric characteristics that show PH-tunable surface charge and morphology. These vital features result in its flexible and tunable adsorption performance. CS-GO is highly efficient in removing multiple types of pollutants from water, including various dyes and metal ions with different charge properties: cationic [methylene blue (MB) and Cu(II)] and anionic species [methyl orange (MO) and Cr(VI)]. Multiple mechanisms, including electrostatic interaction, pi-pi stacking, and chelating effects, are involved in the adsorption of the four pollutants for their different structural characteristics and charge properties. Both pollutants can be efficiently removed at suitable pH conditions in MB/Cu(II) and MO/Cr(VI) binary systems. Moreover, CS-GO shows strongly preferential adsorption of MB over Cu(1) at lower pH levels, whereas very slight selectivity of MO over Cr(VI). According to the adsorption kinetics results, the equilibrium time of CS-GO for adsorption of each pollutant is less than 10.0 min, which is sufficiently fast and satisfactory for practical use. After saturated adsorption, CS-GO can be efficiently regenerated and reused with little uptake loss. Therefore, CS-GO is a versatile adsorbent that efficiently removes various pollutants from water. Graphene Nanosheets and Graphite Oxide As Promising Adsorbents for Removal of Organic Contaminants from Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Graphenes are an emerging class of carbon nanomaterials whose adsorption properties toward organic compounds have not been well understood. In the present study, graphene nanosheets were prepared by reoxidation and abrupt heating of graphite oxide, which was prepared by sequential chemical oxidation of commercial nonporous graphite powder. Adsorption properties of three aromatic compounds (naphthalene, 2-naphthol, and 1-naphthylamine) and one pharmaceutical compound (tylosin) on graphene nanosheets and graphite oxide were examined to explore the potential of these two adsorbents for the removal of organic contaminants from aqueous solutions. Compared with the literature data of adsorption on carbon nanotubes, adsorption of bulky, flexible tylosin on graphene nanosheets exhibited markedly faster adsorption kinetics, which can be attributed to their opened-up layer structure. Graphene nanosheets and graphite oxide showed similar sequences of adsorption affinity: 1-naphthylamine > 2-naphthol > tylosin > naphthalene (with much larger differences observed on graphite oxide). It was proposed that the strong adsorption of the three aromatic compounds was mainly due to π-π electron donor-acceptor interactions with the graphitic surfaces of adsorbents. Additionally, Lewis acid-base interaction was likely an important factor contributing to the strong adsorption of 1-naphthylamine and tylosin, especially for the O-functionality-abundant graphite oxide. After being normalized on the basis of adsorbent surface area, adsorption affinities of all four tested adsorbates on graphene nanosheets were very close to those on nonporous graphite powder, reflecting complete accessibility of the adsorbent surface area in adsorption.
The Synergetic Effect of Mos2 and Graphene on Ag3po4 for Its Ultra-Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity in Phenol Degradation under Visible Light

Abstract:The photo-degradation of organic pollutants using solar light is an attractive chemical process for water pollution control. In this study, we synthesized a new composite material consisting of silver phosphate (Ag₃PO₄) sub-microcrystals grown on a layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) and graphene (GR) hybrid as a high-performance photocatalyst for the degradation of toxic organic pollutants. This composite photocatalyst was prepared via a simple two-step hydrothermal process that used sodium molybdate, thiourea and graphene oxide as precursors for the MoS₂/GR hybrid and silver nitrate for the Ag₃PO₄ sub-microcrystals. The composite Ag₃PO₄-0.02(MoS₂/0.005GR) was found to be the most effective catalyst for the photo-decomposition of 2,4-dichlorophenol under simulated solar light and visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm). The photocatalyst was also highly active for the degradation of nitrophenol and chlorophenol. The ultra photocatalytic activity of the novel catalyst arose from the synergetic effects of MoS₂ and GR as cocatalysts in the composite. MoS₂/GR nanosheets served as electron collectors for the interfacial electron transfer from Ag₃PO₄ to electron acceptors in the aqueous solution and thus enhanced the separation of the photo-generated electron-hole pairs and made the holes more available for organic oxidation. In addition, the presence of MoS₂ and GR provided more active adsorption sites and allowed for the activation of dissolved O₂ for organic degradation in water.
Sulfonated Graphene Nanosheets As A Superb Adsorbent for Various Environmental Pollutants in Water

Abstract:Graphene nanosheets, as a novel nanoadsorbent, can be further modified to optimize the adsorption capability for various pollutants. To overcome the structural limits of graphene (aggregation) and graphene oxide (hydrophilic surface) in water, sulfonated graphene (GS) was prepared by diazotization reaction using sulfanilic acid. It was demonstrated that GS not only recovered a relatively complete sp(2)-hybridized plane with high affinity for aromatic pollutants but also had sulfonic acid groups and partial original oxygen-containing groups that powerfully attracted positively charged pollutants. The saturated adsorption capacities of GS were 400 mg/g for phenanthrene, 906 mg/g for methylene blue and 58 mg/g for Cd(2+), which were much higher than the corresponding values for reduced graphene oxide and graphene oxide. GS as a graphene-based adsorbent exhibits fast adsorption kinetic rate and superior adsorption capacity toward various pollutants, which mainly thanks to the multiple adsorption sites in GS including the conjugate π region sites and the functional group sites. Moreover, the sulfonic acid groups endow GS with the good dispersibility and single or few nanosheets which guarantee the adsorption processes. It is great potential to expose the adsorption sites of graphene nanosheets for pollutants in water by regulating their microstructures, surface properties and water dispersion.
Graphene-coated materials using silica particles as a framework for highly efficient removal of aromatic pollutants in water

Abstract:The substantial aggregation of pristine graphene nanosheets decreases its powerful adsorption capacity and diminishes its practical applications. To overcome this shortcoming, graphene-coated materials (GCMs) were prepared by loading graphene onto silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 ). With the support of SiO 2 , the stacked interlamination of graphene was held open to expose the powerful adsorption sites in the interlayers. The adsorption of phenanthrene, a model aromatic pollutant, onto the loaded graphene nanosheets increased up to 100 fold compared with pristine graphene at the same level. The adsorption of GCMs increased with the loading amount of the graphene nanosheets and dramatically decreased with the introduction of oxygen-containing groups in the graphene nanosheets. The highly hydrophobic effect and the strong π-π stacking interactions of the exposed graphene nanosheets contributed to their superior adsorption of GCMs. An unusual GCM peak adsorption coefficient ( K d ) was observed with the increase in sorbate concentration. The sorbate concentration at peak K d shifted to lower values for the reduced graphene oxide and graphene relative to the graphene oxide. Therefore, the replacement of water nanodroplets attached to the graphene nanosheets through weak non-hydrogen bonding with phenanthrene molecules via strong π-π stacking interactions is hypothesized to be an additional adsorption mechanism for GCMs.

Abstract:Graphene materials have been extensively verified as a good adsorbent for tackling wastewater containing various aromatic pollutants; however, little attention has been paid to understanding the graphene-based adsorption mechanism. Here, a systematic work is performed to prepare a series of graphene oxide (GO)-incorporated polyacrylamide hydrogels, with a three-dimensional (3D) monolithic structure, followed by in situ conversion of GO to reduced graphene oxide. Such a method not only enables the prevention of irreversible aggregation of graphene sheets during the in situ reduction, but also facilitates the clarification of the relationship between the structure and adsorption properties of the graphene materials. This work presents two kinds of graphene-based 3D monolithic adsorbents for either selective separation of the cationic aromatic pollutant from anionic one or uptake both of them for the total purification purpose. More importantly, we effectively unravel that the sp2-conjugated carbon network of the graphene materials plays a pivotal role in purifying the aromatic organic pollutants through π–π stacking interactions that outstrip electrostatic attraction interactions. Therefore, the present work is expected to provide an impetus toward exploration of high-performance graphene-based materials for various applications, especially environmental remediation, on the basis of effectively impeding self-aggregation of graphene sheets and judiciously modulating their intrinsic structure.

Abstract:Hierarchical photocatalytic composite BiOBr@graphene oxide@melamine foam was developed by using a solvothermal process. In this composite, the graphene oxide-wrapped melamine foam acted as the substrate for supporting the catalyst, and the BiOBr nanosheets stably combined with the graphene oxide surface in a uniform distribution. This composite could be floated on the solution surface to inhibit the light shielding effect of colorful organic pollutants. Furthermore, the graphene oxide-wrapped melamine foam provided mass transfer channels for organics and enriched the organics in its 3D structure. BiOBr nanosheets presented efficient photodegradation of organics and solved the problem of adsorption saturation of graphene oxide@melamine foam. Graphene oxide could further improve the light utilization, inhibit the recombination of charges, and enrich the organics. In view of the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis, this catalyst system realized the efficient removal of the organic rhodamine B and presented the promoted amount of contaminant removal with increased rhodamine B concentration.

Abstract:Water pollution from industrial sources presents a significant environmental challenge due to the presence of recalcitrant organic contaminants. These pollutants threaten human health and necessitate effective remediation strategies. This article reviewed the synergistic application of adsorption and Fenton oxidation for water treatment. Adsorption, a common technique, concentrates pollutants onto a solid surface, but offers limited degradation. Fenton oxidation, an advanced oxidation process (AOP), utilizes hydroxyl radicals for efficient organic compound breakdown. When adsorption and Fenton oxidation combine, adsorption pre-concentrates pollutants, boosting Fenton oxidation effectiveness. This review delves into the mechanisms and advantages of this integrated approach, highlighting its potential for enhanced removal of organic contaminants. The discussion encompasses the mechanisms of Fenton oxidation and the synergistic effects it has with adsorption. Additionally, various support materials employed in this combined process are explored, including carbon-based supports (activated carbon, graphene, carbon nanotubes and biochar), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and clays. Finally, the applicability of this approach to diverse wastewater streams, such as medical and industrial wastewater, is addressed. The review contains 105 references and summarizes the key findings and future perspectives for this promising water remediation technology.
Aminated Graphene Oxide Impregnated with Photocatalytic Polyoxometalate for Efficient Adsorption of Dye Pollutants and Its Facile and Complete Photoregeneration

Abstract:Contamination of industrial sewage by organic dye pollutants is one of the most common challenges to the daily life. De-contamination can be achieved by adsorption and photodegradation of the pollutants. However, the former technique is generally limited by the poor loading capacity of the adsorbent and/ or the difficulty in its regeneration for reuse, while the latter often suffers from sluggish reaction kinetics and thus requires long reaction time and powerful light source to be successful. Herein, a solution to these challenges by creating nanocomposites featuring porous diamine-functionalized graphene oxide (FGO) impregnated with photocatalytically active polyoxometalates (POMs) is presented. Cross-linking of GO via diamination not only generates porous structures with positively charged interior that attracts and stabilizes the anionic POM guests, but also modulates the GO bandgap. The introduction of POMs improves loading capacity of FGO for cationic dyes and promotes effective separation of electron-hole pair by trapping and transferring photogenerated electron. Thus, the two components act in synergy to result in much improved adsorption of certain common organic dyes as well as enhanced oxidative degradation by both the GO host and the POMs that lead to complete regeneration of the adsorbents without compromising their performance in multiple rounds of reuse.
Graphene-Coated Silica As A Highly Efficient Sorbent For Residual Organophosphorus Pesticides In Water

Abstract:A new form of graphene-coated silica (GCS) has been prepared by mixing exfoliated graphene oxide with acid-treated silica and reducing it with hydrazine hydrate so that it coats the silica particles. This method is simple, convenient, and robust. The GCS composite particles have been characterized using optical photographs, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and elemental analysis. These analyses show that the reaction effectively coats silica particles with graphene. The composite particles achieve higher levels of adsorption and are more widely applicable than five other sorbents (graphite carbons, activated carbon, pure graphene, C18 silica, and silica) for the eleven pesticides assayed. We discuss the adsorption mechanism and consider it to be dependent on the electron-donating abilities of the S, P, and N atoms and the strong pi-bonding network of the benzene rings. This research demonstrates that graphene-based composite materials could be used to remove pesticide residues in aqueous environments.

Abstract:A CuBi 2 O 4 /rGH composite catalyst was prepared by modifying CuBi 2 O 4 on the surface of a three-dimensional graphene hydrogel (rGH) via a simple water bath method. The large specific surface area and particular surface adsorption properties of rGH were beneficial for adsorbing and enriching pollutant molecules and could then be further degraded by the in situ photocatalytic Fenton synergistic effect with the addition of H 2 O 2 . The introduction of graphene not only increases the surface area and improves the adsorption properties but also accelerates the transfer and separation efficiency of the interface photogenerated charge, thereby promoting the photocatalytic Fenton degradation performance. The adsorption performance and catalytic degradation performance of the 20 % CuBi 2 O 4 /rGH composite for phenol were 1.4 and 1.3 times higher than those of CuBi 2 O 4 , respectively. Meanwhile, the removal efficiency of phenol in the adsorption and in situ photocatalytic Fenton synergistic system was as high as 80 % within 20 min. In addition, the cross-linked network structure of the 3D graphene hydrogel could be better recycled, which has significant potential in practical applications. Quenching and EPR experimental results showed that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were the most active species in the synergistic degradation process, and the mechanism of CuBi 2 O 4 /rGH adsorption and in situ photocatalytic Fenton degradation was proposed.
