Abstract:In the past decade,mussel-bioinspired surface chemistry has been an interdisciplinary research hotspot in material science,chemistry and biomedicine etc.Dopamine behaves like mussel foot proteins and is able to develop into polydopamine (PDA) nanocoating and nanoparticles with various functions by complicated oxidation,self-polymerization and further self-assembly.PDA nanomaterials have found a variety of applications in separation,adsorption,biomedical and bioadhesives etc.In recent years,we have made many efforts on the preparation and structure control of mussel-bioinspired separation materials.In our works,for the first time,mussel-inspired PDA deposition was introduced to surface construction and functionalization of polymeric porous membranes.A simple model on dopamine evolution and deposition on solid-liquid interface was proposed.Furthermore,a novel thin-film composite nanofiltration(NF) membrane with PDA coating as the active separation layer was developed.These works pioneered a new and simple way of membrane surface functionalization and NF membrane preparation.The aim of this article is to review and highlight the progress of mussel-bioinspired separation materials,especially polymeric separation membranes.

Abstract:Photo-active shape memory polymers (SMPs) are considered as a promising candidate for converting light into mechanical energy. However, most known SMPs are only thermo-responsive. To achieve photo-activity, photo-responsive choromophores or fillers usually have to be incorporated from the very beginning of the material synthesis. Here, we introduce a novel post-synthesis approach to endow normal SMPs with photo-active properties using mussel-inspired surface chemistry. Without changing the original properties, the resultant polydopamine (PDA) coated SMPs show an efficient photo-active performance. The coating can be easily patterned and erased, which allows flexible light-triggered 3-D shape deformation of a planar SMP sheet. Moreover, owing to the high chemical activity, the PDA coating also provides a platform to optimize the surface properties of the photo-responsive SMPs through secondary surface modification.

Abstract:Non-iridescent structural colors with wide viewing angles are produced by amorphous photonic structure (APS) and have received increasing attention. However, it is still a challenge to fabricate of non-iridescent, crack-free and functional structural colors, simultaneously. Here, the flexible lamellar nanostructures of graphene oxide (GO) are introduced as a black additive to fabricate amorphous, crack-free structural colors. The color hue and spectral purity of APS film can be easily tuned by adjusting the diameter of spheres and concentration of GO. Furthermore, after reduction treatment, the APS film possesses excellent visibility, flexibility and conductivity, paving the way toward their practical applications in flexible sensors, solar cells and full-color paper-like displays.

Abstract:Polydopamine-based coatings are fabricated via an electric field-accelerating and -directing codeposition process of polydopamine with charged polymers such as polycations, polyanions, and polyzwitterions. The coatings are uniform and smooth on various substrates, especially on those adhesion-resistant materials including poly(vinylidene fluoride) and poly(tetrafluoroethylene) membranes. Moreover, this electric field-directed deposition method can be applied to facilely prepare Janus membranes with asymmetric chemistry and wettability.

Abstract:Mussel-inspired poly(catecholamine) coatings from polydopamine (PDA) have been widely studied to design functional coatings for various materials. The chemical precursor of dopamine (DA), levodopa (l-DOPA, 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-l-alanine), is known as the main element of mussel adhesive foot protein, but it is relatively hard to be constructed into a desirable coating on a given material surface under the same conditions as those for DA. Herein, we report a codeposition strategy to achieve the rapid fabrication of mussel-inspired coatings by l-DOPAwith polyethyleneimine (PEI) and to deeply understand the formation mechanism of those aggregates and coatings from l-DOPA/PEI. DFT calculations, fluorescence spectra, nuclear magnetic resonance analysis, and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry identification demonstrate that the formation of l-DOPA/PEI aggregates is effectively accelerated by PEI crosslinking with those intermediates of oxidized l-DOPA, including l-DOPAquinone and 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid as well as 5,6-dihydroxyindole, through Michael-addition and Schiff-base reactions. Therefore, we can facilely control the growth rate and the particle size of the l-DOPA/PEI aggregates in the deposition solution by adjusting the concentration of PEI. The coating formation rate of l-DOPA/PEI is four times faster than that of PDA and DA/PEI within 12 h. These l-DOPA/PEI coatings are demonstrated to display potential as structure colors, superhydrophilic surfaces, and antibacterial materials.
CuSO4/H2O2-Induced Rapid Deposition of Polydopamine Coatings with High Uniformity and Enhanced Stability.

Abstract:Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) deposition offers a promising route to fabricate multifunctional coatings for various materials. However, PDA deposition is generally a time-consuming process, and PDA coatings are unstable in acidic and alkaline media, as well as in polar organic solvents. We report a strategy to realize the rapid deposition of PDA by using CuSO4/H2O2 as a trigger. Compared to the conventional processes, our strategy shows the fastest deposition rate reported to date, and the PDA coatings exhibit high uniformity and enhanced stability. Furthermore, the PDA-coated porous membranes have excellent hydrophilicity, anti-oxidant properties, and antibacterial performance. This work demonstrates a useful method for the environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and time-saving fabrication of PDA coatings.

Abstract:We report a simple and facile protocol to fabricate mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) gradients on different surfaces. An oxygen diffusion phenomenon was used for dopamine autoxidation to form thickness gradients of PDA on different substrates. These PDA gradients showed gradual changes in thickness, roughness, wettability and light transmittance.

Abstract:Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) chemistry was exploited, for the first time, to regulate the contra-diffusion synthesis of 1D metal–organic framework (MOF) superstructures in the channels of polycarbonate track-etched membranes. The PDA modified template channels facilitate controllability for the heterogeneous nucleation and interfacial growth of various MOFs. Well-defined 1D hybrid MOF nanotubes with a high aspect ratio up to 40 and length of 10 μm were successfully obtained. Potential application of the composite membrane for decontamination of organic dyes was demonstrated by a facile filtration method. This study provides new insights into the surface chemistry directed growth behavior of MOFs on polymeric templates. Moreover, the methodology of PDA chemistry mediated contra-diffusion synthesis opens a new avenue to fabricate diverse 1D superstructures of MOFs and other functional materials.

Abstract:Because of the unique features of spherical symmetry, angle-independency, good monodispersity, controllable components and morphologies, structural color particles (SCPs) have found great significances in various fields such as sensing, monitoring, biological assays, etc. Here, inspired by the melanosome-derived bright structural colors and the self-adhesivity of mussels, we present a kind of bioinspired SCPs assembled from polydopamine (PDA)-adhered multi-layer graphene oxide (GO) encapsulated silica nanoparticles (SNs). It is demonstrated that compared with traditional SCPs, the designed particles possess brighter and more vibrant structural colors, and no complicated modification is required during the functionalization process due to the abundant inherent functional groups of GO. The resultant SCPs are verified to be capable for direct hybridization chain reaction and multiplexed nucleic acid assays. These properties indicate the promising prospects of our designed SCPs.

Abstract:Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) has emerged as a promising molecule used for anchoring synthetic and biological substances or forming an adhesive layer onto various substrates for biomedical and nanotechnology applications because of its outstanding properties. This review article provides an overview of the recent progress in the PDA-based materials, including synthesis of nanoparticles, capsules, structure-mechanism, physicochemical and biological properties, and medical applications. Frist, to understand how PDA nanoparticles, capsules and films produce the unique properties is insight on the processing parameters. Next, we highlight what is known regarding the mechanism of self-polymerization and the structure features of dopamine (DA), which is based on the formation of covalent bond or through a combination mode between monomers. The inherent hydrophilicity and adhesive property of PDA with the coexistence of catechol and amine functionalities provide desirable surface characteristics without the need for further modification. Finally, successful applications, such as grafting substances, biomineralization, antifouling and antibacterial coatings, drug/gene delivery, and tissue engineering, reported to date involving PDA will be focused. The future study of PDA to develop novel materials with unique properties is emerging for specific nanomedicine applications.

Abstract:Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) coatings have gained significant attentions in various fields, including biomedicine, energy, detection, and UV protection, owing to their versatile promising properties. Among these properties, UV shielding stands out as a key feature of PDA coatings. Nevertheless, current methods for tuning the UV-shielding properties of PDA coatings are quite limited, only relying on the thickness adjustment, which might involve additional issues like color and visible light transmittance to the coating layer. In this study, we have proposed a facile and modular approach to enhance the UV absorption of PDA coatings by incorporating thiol-heterocycles (TH) derivatives. Both pre- and post-modification strategies can effectively impede the formation of conjugated structures within PDA, leading to the boosted UV absorption within the PDA layers. More importantly, these strategies can improve the UV absorption of PDA coatings while reducing visible light absorption. Furthermore, this method enabled the efficient regulation of UV absorption of PDA coatings by altering the ring type (benzene ring or pyridine ring) and substituents on the ring (methoxyl group or hydrogen atom). These PDA coatings with enhanced UV absorption demonstrated great promise for applications in UV protection, antibacterial, wound healing and dye degradation.

Abstract:Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) coating has been utilized extensively as versatile deposition strategies that can functionalize surfaces of virtually all substrates. However, the strong adhesion, stability and intermolecular interaction of PDA make it inefficient in certain applications. Herein, a green and efficient photocatalytic method was reported to remove adhesion and degrade PDA by using TiO2-H2O2 as photocatalyst. The photodegradation process of the PDA spheres was first undergone nanoscale disassembly to form soluble PDA oligomers or well-dispersed nanoparticles. Most of the disassembled PDA can be photodegraded and finally mineralized to CO2 and H2O. Various PDA coated templates and PDA hollow structures can be photodegraded by this strategy. Such process provides a practical strategy for constructing the patterned and gradient surfaces by the "top-down" method under the control of light scope and intensity. This sequential degradation strategy is beneficial to achieve the decomposition of highly crosslinked polymers.

Abstract:Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) coatings have been broadly exploited for constructing functional membrane surfaces. One-step codeposition of PDA with antifouling polymers, especially zwitterionic polymers, has been regarded as a promising strategy for fabricating antifouling membrane surfaces. However, one challenge is that the codeposition is usually a slow process over 10 h or even several days. Herein, we report that CuSO4/H2O2 is able to notably accelerate the codeposition process of PDA with poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA). In our case, PSBMA is facilely anchored to the polypropylene microporous membrane (PPMM) surfaces within 1 h with the assistance of PDA because of its strong interfacial adhesion. The PDA/PSBMA-coated PPMMs show excellent surface hydrophilicity, high water permeation flux (7506 ± 528 L/m2·h at 0.1 MPa), and an outstanding antifouling property. Moreover, the antifouling property is maintained after the membranes are treated with acid and alkali solutions as well as organic solvents. To recap, it provides a facile, universal, and time-saving strategy for exploiting high-efficiency and durable antifouling membrane surfaces.

Abstract:Mussel-inspired chemistry, particularly the versatile coating capability of polydopamine (PDA), has received much research interest as a promising strategy for fabricating functional coatings in numerous fields. However, the understanding of deposition mechanisms and adhesion behaviors of PDA on different substrates still remains incomplete, significantly limiting the related fundamental research and its practical applications. In this work, a colloidal probe atomic force spectroscopy technique was employed to quantify the interaction forces and adhesion between the PDA coatings and the substrate surfaces with different wettabilities. The surface force measurements and thermodynamic analysis of interaction energy indicate that the surface wettability has a significant influence on the adhesion, deposition behaviors, and morphologies of PDA coatings. Compared with the hydrophilic surfaces, the hydrophobic surfaces exhibit stronger adhesion with the PDA coatings. Furthermore, for the first time, this work demonstrates that ethanol has the capability of effectively displacing the trapped air/vapor layer or the so-called "hydrophobic depletion layer" on the hydrophobic substrate to allow the intimate contact between PDA and the substrate, thus enhancing the adhesion and facilitating the PDA deposition. This work provides new insights into the fundamental PDA deposition mechanism as well as the design and development of versatile mussel-inspired coatings on the substrates of varying hydrophobicity.
Rapid fabrication of tunable structural color patterns by spray-coating

Abstract:Structural color, a color generated based on physical principles, has broad applications such as displays, optical sensors, and anti-counterfeiting. Traditional methods for producing structural colors are often complex and time-consuming, whereas spray-coating colloidal self-assembly offers a simple and controllable alternative. However, due to the high-pressure atomization process, colloidal inks often form amorphous photonic structures (APSs), making it challenging to precisely control the assembly of colloidal particles on substrates to achieve ordered structures. By rationally designing the composition of colloidal mixed solutions, controlling particle concentration, and adjusting evaporation temperatures, it is possible to effectively regulate the assembly of colloidal particles and obtain angle-dependent iridescent colors. This work proposes a simple spray-coating process that enables the control of both ordered and disordered structures, with tunable optical properties, suitable for colloidal patterning on various substrates. This method not only simplifies the fabrication of photonic crystals (PCs) but also has broad potential, particularly in anti-counterfeiting, where it enables the creation of hard-to-replicate structured patterns with enhanced security.
Structural Color Enhancement through Synchronizing Natural Convection and Marangoni Flow in Pendant Drops

Abstract:Structural color, renowned for its enduring vibrancy, has been extensively developed and applied in the fields of display and anticounterfeiting. However, its limitations in brightness and saturation hinder further application in these areas. Herein, we propose a pendant evaporation self-assembly method to address these challenges simultaneously. By leveraging natural convection and Marangoni flow synchronization, the self-assembly process enhances the dynamics and duration of colloidal nanoparticles, thereby enhancing the orderliness of colloidal photonic crystals. On average, this technique boosts the brightness of structural color by 20% and its saturation by 35%. Moreover, pendant evaporation self-assembly is simple and convenient to operate, making it suitable for industrial production. We anticipate that its adoption will remarkably advance the industrialization of structural color, facilitating its engineering applications across various fields, such as display technology and anticounterfeiting identification.
Bioinspired Polydopamine Modification for Interface Compatibility of PDMS-Based Responsive Structurally Colored Textiles

Abstract:Textiles that can repeatedly change color in the presence of external stimuli have attracted great interest. Effectively designing to produce such functional textiles is essential, yet there remain challenges like producing stable coloration, rapid response, and reverse color changing. Here, the preparation of a magnetic field response (MFR) textile with a fast magnetic field response, brilliant structural coloration, and mechanical robustness is reported. The MFR textile is knitted by incorporating magnetic particles' ethylene glycol (EG) suspension within polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based fibers. A surface modification strategy is designed to prevent EG from seeping out along the PDMS polymer chains. A PDMS fiber is encapsulated in waterborne polyurethane, and a polydopamine joint layer is used. The MFR textile demonstrates magnetic field-triggered structural colors, and the breaking strength and elongation at break of each composite fiber are improved. In addition, multishaped patterns can be printed on the MFR textile with the help of the photo etching technology, which enhances the applications of the new functional textiles.
Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Elastomer Coatings with Brilliant Structural Colors and Mechanochromic Response Fabricated by Spray Deposition

Abstract:A method of spraying the cholesteric liquid crystal paints followed by evaporation‐induced self‐assembly and photocuring is developed to prepare cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer (CLCE) coatings with brilliant structural colors and mechanochromic response. The as‐prepared CLCE coatings present iridescent and uniform structural colors, which is fully compatible with the commercial technology and suitable for the large‐area industrial production. Structural color coatings with brilliant color is important in practical applications, such as aesthetic decoration, bionic skins, colorimetric sensors, and other color‐related fields. However, the intrinsic conflict between fast self‐assembly and bright structural color hinders their widespread applications. Here, cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer (CLCE) coatings with brilliant color and mechanochromic response are developed by spraying the cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) paints followed by evaporation‐induced self‐assembly (EISA) and photocuring. The Marangoni flow within the paints, which drives the orientation of liquid crystal molecules along the flow track in the EISA process, is found to be crucial for achieving both rapid self‐assembly time (60 s) and high reflectivity structural color (42%). The as‐prepared CLCE coatings present uniform structural colors, circularly polarized reflection, and mechanochromic response. Several proofofconcept applications are also demonstrated, including patterned CLCE coatings on flat substrates, fully covered CLCE coatings on 3D objects, and non‐spectral colors via additive mixing method. The research disclosed herein provides unprecedented levels of efficiency and reliability for preparing structural color coatings.

Abstract:Owing to the unique features of angle independence and wide-angle display, non-iridescent materials have attracted increasing interest in coating, decoration, and anti-counterfeiting. However, there are still some defects that limit their applications, such as relatively pale colors and suboptimal stability. Inspired by mussels' super-adhesivity and feathers' brightness, we present a graphene-doped non-iridescent pigment to overcome the aforementioned limitations. The elementary unit of the pigments is polydopamine-adhered multishell graphene oxide-encapsulated silica nanoparticles. These nanoparticles form into microspheres after simple spraying, and the obtained angle-independent patterns are imparted with higher color saturation and excellent selfadhesivity compared with traditional non-iridescent materials. Moreover, our pigments can also be employed as templates for negative replication, and the resultant inverse opal hydrogels are endowed with the same amorphous features and even some additional functions such as photothermal responsiveness and self-healing capacity. These features indicate promising prospects for our designed pigments.
