Abstract:Space-division multiplexing (SDM) has been expected to support the continuous growth of transmission capacity. However, it suffers from high computation complexity that limits its physical implementations. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a low-complexity MIMO equalization method to leverage the sparsity of weights and reduce the complexity by L1&L2-regularization in long-haul space-division multiplexing (SDM) systems. The L1-regularization finds the sparse solution of equalizer filters and substitutes it for optimal solution, reducing the complexity with performance degradation. On the other hand, the L2 regularization tends to produce a smoother estimation than L1 regularization and is therefore more robust to large variance. We conduct a 39.87-GBaud QPSK coherent optical transmission experiment based on a 4-core coupled-core fiber with the transmission distance from 1206-km to 7236-km. Comparisons on the equalization performance and computational complexity show that the sparse equalizer using L1&L2-regularization achieves a 30% reduction in complexity at the similar system performance, compared with the traditional time-domain MIMO. Abstract:Distributed antenna systems (DAS) have gained wide spread interest as an efficient means to expand system capacity, decrease transmission power and mitigate inter cell interference. In this paper, a distributed MIMO-OFDM system is studied over composite Rayleigh-lognormal multipath fading channels. Two kinds of information-theoretic capacity measures - ergodic capacity and outage capacity are evaluated. We also investigate the impact of spatial fading correlation on the capacity. From simulation results, we find that the distributed MIMO-OFDM scheme can bring a certain degree of capacity improvement because of macroscopic shadow fading diversity gain. Moreover, we show that, due to the decrease in spatial fading correlation, the distributed MIMO-OFDM scheme can provide capacity improvement compared with the conventional centralized MIMO-OFDM scheme.

Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:Applying Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology in terrestrial wireless networks can obtain large capacity gain. Therefore, MIMO technology is widely applied in satellite communication system, in which orbital positions are increasingly crowded and frequency resources are of shortage. This paper attempts to research on channel capacity in 2×2 dual-polarized MIMO mobile satellite (DMMS) system and discovers that when XPD (Cross Polarization Discrimination) is above zero, the channel capacity increases approximately linearly with the XPD within certain range. Adding Ricean factor K in consideration of its special features,the system’s capacity increases with the Ricean factor K. Simulation results demonstrate that the application of MIMO technology in satellite mobile communication system can improve the channel capacity significantly, providing great support for the development of future satellite MIMO technology.

Abstract:Optical Mobile Communication (OMC) is a newly raised optical wireless communication system, where a novel device called Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) is applied. With the deploying of SLM units, OMC systems can split one light beam to multiple beams directing to different receivers, and hence bring in a new design freedom on the energy allocation for each sub-beam. In this paper, we study a general model of the OMC systems that the transmitter wants to broadcast multiple messages to multiple users, and some of the users may request a same message. We focus on characterizing the capacity region of such OMC systems, in order to assess the benefits on capacity by deploying SLM units. For the general cases, numerical solutions of the capacity region are raised, and for special cases that the system is symmetric or the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is rather low, closed form results of the capacity region are proposed. We also study the OMC system which broadcasts two different messages, and give out a partial closed form result of the capacity region. From this case, we can find that characterizing the capacity region for OMC systems is equivalent to optimizing high order polynomial, which is doable but impossible to find closed form results in general. Abstract:CapEx minimization for space division multiplexing (SDM) networks is studied by modeling and solving the CapEx-minimized planning problem. Physical layer constraints, including the mode-binding constraint in few-mode fiber (FMF) transmission system and the inter-core crosstalk constraint in multi-core fiber (MCF) transmission system are considered. Numerical results show that SDM networks has CapEx advantage compared with conventional single-core/mode WDM networks when specific switching structures and crosstalk suppression signal processing methods are used, while this benefit is sensitive to network traffic.
Analytic Models for the Capacity Distribution in MDG-impaired Optical SDM Transmission

Abstract:In coupled space-division multiplexing (SDM) transmission systems, imperfections in optical amplifiers and passive devices introduce mode-dependent loss (MDL) and gain (MDG). These effects render the channel capacity stochastic and result in a decrease in average capacity. Several previous studies employ multi-section simulations to model the capacity of these systems. Additionally, relevant works derive analytically the capacity distribution for a single-mode system with polarization-dependent gain and loss (mode count D = 2). However, to the best of our knowledge, analytic expressions of the capacity distribution for systems with D > 2 have not been presented. In this paper, we provide analytic expressions for the capacity of optical systems with arbitrary mode counts. The expressions rely on Gaussian approximations for the per-mode capacity distributions and for the overall capacity distribution, as well as on fitting parameters for the capacity cross-correlation among different modes. Compared to simulations, the derived analytical expressions exhibit a suitable level of accuracy across a wide range of practical scenarios.

Abstract:We evaluate the advantages of using the extra dimension introduced by space-division multiplexing (SDM) for dynamic bandwidth-allocation purposes in a flexible optical network. In that respect, we aim to compare spectral and spatial super-channel (Sp-Ch) allocation policies in an SDM network based on bundles of SMFs (to eliminate coupling between spatial dimensions from the study) and to investigate the role of modulation format selection in the blocking probability performance with an emphasis on the spectral efficiency (SE)/reach tradeoff for different multiline-rate scenarios, created either by changing the number of sub-channels (Sb-Ch), or by employing different modulation formats. Our network-performance results show that DP-8QAM -in a multichannel (MC) single-modulation-format system assuming ITU-T 50-GHz WDM Sb-Ch spectrum occupation-offers the best compromise between SE and optical reach for both spectral and spatial Sp-Ch allocation policies. They also reveal that an MC multimodulation-format system improves the network performance, particularly for spectral Sp-Ch allocation with Sb-Ch spectrum occupation of 37.5 GHz on the 12.5-GHz grid. Additionally, as another important contribution of the paper, we investigate, for spatial Sp-Ch allocation, the performance of several SDM switching options: independent switching (InS), which offers highest flexibility, joint-switching (JoS), which routes all spatial modes as a single entity, and fractional-joint switching, which separates out the spatial modes into sub-sets of spatial modes which are routed independently. JoS is proved to offer a similar performance to that of InS for particular network load profiles, while allowing a significant reduction in the number of wavelength-selective switches.

Abstract:In the multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems employing space division multiplexing(SDM),the downlink capacity is limited by the spatial channel resources.In this paper,a novel grouped multi-user diversity(GMUD) scheme is proposed on the basis of adaptive SDM.In view of the characteristics of SDM algorithm,the scheme first divides all users into groups in such a way that the users whose principal right singular vectors have the least cross correlation are put into the same group.Then using a novel adaptive SDM scheme,the attainable capacity of each group is computed,and the channel is allocated to the group with the maximal capacity.Simulation results show that the proposed GMUD scheme can not only provide fair resource utilization,but also dramatically improve the system capacity due to the adoption of multi-user diversity and adaptive spatial channel allocation.

Abstract:We propose to use adaptive bit loading based on time-domain hybrid QAM (TDHQ) to maximize the capacity of subcarrier-multiplexing (SCM) systems in meshed optical networks with cascaded reconfigurable optical add and drop multiplexers (ROADMs). Note that the capacity is defined as the achievable net bit rate at the soft-decision FEC threshold of BER = 2 × 10-2 in this work. The capacity improvement is first numerically and experimentally demonstrated in a 4-subcarrier SCM system with an aggregate symbol rate of 34.94 Gbaud. Compared with the conventional SCM system using uniform standard QAM, the proposed system can achieve an average capacity increase of 31.75% and 26.1% over various link conditions in simulations and experiments, respectively. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the proposed SCM system can better approach the channel capacity in the presence of narrow inline optical filtering. An average capacity improvement of 7.59% is also reported over all 17 ROADMs cases from 1 to 17 by simulations at OSNR = 21 dB, compared with its single carrier counterpart using TDHQ.

Abstract:Channel measurements show that significant spatially non-wide-sense-stationary characteristics rise in massive MIMO channels. Notable parameter variations are experienced along the base station array, such as the average received energy at each antenna, and the directions of arrival of signals impinging on different parts of the array. In this paper, a new channel model is proposed to describe this spatial non-stationarity in massive MIMO channels by incorporating the concepts of partially visible clusters and wholly visible clusters. Furthermore, a closed-form expression of an upper bound on the ergodic sum capacity is derived for the new model, and the influence of the spatial non-stationarity on the sum capacity is analyzed. Analysis shows that for non-identically-and-independent-distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh fading channels, the non-stationarity benefits the sum capacity by bringing a more even spread of channel eigenvalues. Specifically, more partially visible clusters, smaller cluster visibility regions and a larger antenna array can all help to yield a well-conditioned channel, and benefit the sum capacity. This shows the advantage of using a large antenna array in a non-i.i.d. channel: the sum capacity benefits not only from a higher array gain, but also from a more spatially non-stationary channel. Numerical results demonstrate our analysis and the tightness of the upper bound.

Abstract:By solving the time-independent power flow equation (TI PFE), the effects of mode coupling and the width of the launch beam distribution (LBD) on two and three spatially multiplexed optical channels in a step-index plastic optical fibers (SI POFs) are examined. The fiber length at which the space division multiplexing (SDM) can be implemented with a minimal crosstalk between the neighboring optical channels is severely limited by mode coupling, according to the results. Additionally, the impact of the LBD width on the equilibrium mode distribution (EMD) is examined. The fiber length at which EMD is created increases when the LBD's width decreases. Thus, in the studied multimode SI POF, the two and three spatially multiplexed channels can be used with low crosstalk up to the fiber lengths, which are longer in the case of the narrower LBD. When creating an optical fiber transmission system for SDM, such characterization of the optical fibers should be taken into account.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a spatial modulation (SM) aided multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) layered division multiplexing (LDM) system for broadcast/multicast service delivery in future broadcast/multicast systems. Comprehensive performance analysis and the injection level (IL) optimization are investigated for the SM-aided MIMO-LDM system over correlated Rayleigh fading channels. First, the symbol detection pairwise error probability (PEP) and the average symbol error rate (SER) union bound under joint maximum-likelihood (ML) detection are derived. Second, the spectral efficiency (SE) of the SM-aided MIMO-LDM system with finite alphabet inputs is analyzed. Since the theoretical SE lacks closed-form expression and involves prohibitive computational complexity, we then derive the closed-form lower bounds and tight approximations for the theoretical SE, in which the computational complexity is relieved by several orders of magnitude compared to direct calculation of the theoretical SE. Third, based on the SE analysis, a weighted sum (WS) SE maximization problem with quality of service (QoS) constraints is formulated to optimize IL for the SM-aided MIMO-LDM system. We first demonstrate that WS SE is a unimodal function of IL, and then develop an efficient golden section search (GSS) based algorithm. Simulation results are provided to validate the theoretical analysis. It is shown that our derived SER union bound well matches the simulated SER in the high SNR region. The tightness of the derived closed-form lower bounds and approximations for theoretical SE and the effectiveness of the developed IL optimization algorithm are also verified by simulation results.

Abstract:Recently, optical single sideband (SSB) based direct detection (DD) has been considered as a promising candidate for inter data center interconnects (inter-DCIs). Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver is always applied to eliminate the signal-to-signal beating interference (SSBI) caused by the square law-detection of a single-ended photodiode (PD) in SSB DD system. The electro-to optical (EO) conversion of the complex signal can be realized by IQ modulator (IQM). However, IQ imbalance exists at the transmitter since the in-phase and quadrature-phase ports of IQM are driven by the real and imaginary parts of the signal, respectively. In this paper, we show the theoretical analysis of the transmitter side (Tx-side) IQ imbalance includes time delay, amplitude mismatch and phase mismatch. Tx-side IQ imbalance will seriously deteriorate the system performance. To deal with the impairment caused by Tx-side IQ imbalance, a 22 real-value multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) equalizer is proposed and implemented, and the system with the impact of these three factors are investigated in simulation, respectively. Besides,a transmission of 180 Gbs discrete Fourier transform spread (DFT-S) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal over 80-km single mode fiber (SMF) is experimentally demonstrated with bit error rate (BER) below the soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 102 enabled by the proposed 2 2 MIMO equalizer.

Diversity-optimal power loading for intensity modulated MIMO optical wireless communications

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the design of space code for an intensity modulated direct detection multi-input-multi-output optical wireless communication (IM/DD MIMO-OWC) system, in which channel coefficients are independent and non-identically log-normal distributed, with variances and means known at the transmitter and channel state information available at the receiver. Utilizing the existing space code design criterion for IM/DD MIMO-OWC with a maximum likelihood (ML) detector, we design a diversity-optimal space code (DOSC) that maximizes both large-scale diversity and small-scale diversity gains and prove that the spatial repetition code (RC) with a diversity-optimized power allocation is diversity-optimal among all the high dimensional nonnegative space code schemes under a commonly used optical power constraint. In addition, we show that one of significant advantages of the DOSC is to allow low-complexity ML detection. Simulation results indicate that in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes, our proposed DOSC significantly outperforms RC, which is the best space code currently available for such system.

Abstract:Orthogonal signal-division multiplexing (OSDM) is an attractive alternative to conventional orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) due to its enhanced ability in peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction. Combining OSDM with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signaling has the potential to achieve high spectral and power efficiency. However, a direct channel equalization in this case incurs a cubic complexity, which may be expensive for practical use. To solve the problem, low-complexity per-vector and block equalization algorithms of MIMO-OSDM are proposed in this paper for time-invariant and time-varying channels, respectively. By exploiting the channel matrix structures, these algorithms have only a linear complexity in the transformed domain. Simulation results demonstrate their validity and the related performance comparisons.

Abstract:As single-mode-fiber transmission systems are reaching their capacity limits, spatial-division multiplexing (SDM) techniques have been investigated to increase the per-fiber capacity. However, the compatibility with current single-mode transponders severely hinders the near-term deployment of SDM systems. In this paper, we experimentally propose two real-time SDM transmission schemes using commercial single-mode 400 G dual-polarized 16 quadrature amplitude modulation equipment. In the first experiment, 60 km weakly coupled single-mode 7-core fiber with a pair of fan-in and fan-out devices are adopted. In the second experiment, the fiber link consists of 60 km/150 km weakly coupled few-mode fiber (FMF) and low-modal-crosstalk mode multiplexers, in which only non-degenerate LP01 and LP02 modes are utilized. In order to investigate the effect of splice on SDM fiber links, 20-roll, 3 km multicore fibers (MCFs) and FMFs are spliced and tested in the experiments. The bit error rates of all SDM experiments are all below 4.75 × 10−2 forward-error-correction threshold of the 400 G transponders. The experimental results prove that the near-term deployment of SDM systems could be accelerated by utilizing weakly coupled MCFs or non-degenerate modes of weakly coupled FMFs which are compatible with commercial single-mode transponders without any software or hardware modifications.
