Abstract:Digital signal processing is the core functional block in beyond-100G transmission systems with a high symbol rate and/or high spectral efficiency. We review recent progress on high symbol rate signal generation and detection, and corresponding advanced algorithms for signal equalization and compensation at the transmitters (Tx) and the receivers (Rx), respectively. Thanks to the joint Tx-side optical pre-equalization (pre-EQ) and Rx-side partial response maximum likelihood sequence estimation, significant performance improvement can be achieved by reducing the penalty caused by bandwidth limitations of the optical and electronic components. A joint pre-EQ and look-up table predistortion technique is also reviewed in this paper, which is demonstrated to be an effective method for mitigating devices' nonlinearity impairment. We exemplify how these advanced algorithms enable high symbol rate beyond-100G transmission systems with signal generation based on either electronic time-division multiplexing or digital-to-analog converters.

Abstract:The terahertz band has been recognized as a promising candidate to support future rate-greedy applications such as 6G communications. Optoelectronic terahertz communications are beneficial for the realization of high-speed transmission. In this Letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an optoelectronic terahertz transmission system with intensity modulation and direct detection, where a discrete multitone (DMT) waveform with high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is used. A zero-bias diode (ZBD) is used in the system as a simple, cost-effective direct detection terahertz receiver. A nonlinearity-aware digital signal reception routine is proposed to mitigate the nonlinear impairments induced by subcarrier-to-subcarrier beating interference from the ZBD. In this experiment, up to a 60 Gbit/s line rate 16QAM-DMT signal is successfully transmitted over a 3 m wireless link in the 310 GHz band, and the mean signal-to-noise ratio is improved by 3 dB with nonlinearity-aware signal processing routine. The advantageous features of such a scheme make it a promising solution for terahertz wireless communications.

Abstract:The recently reported high spectral efficiency (SE) and high-baud-rate signal transmission are all based on digital coherent optical communications and digital signal processing (DSP). DSP simplifies the reception of advanced modulation formats and also enables the major electrical and optical impairments to be processed and compensated in the digital domain, at the transmitter or receiver side. In this paper, we summarize the research progress on high-speed signal generation and detection and also show the progress on DSP for high-speed signal detection. We also report the latest progress on multi-core and multi-mode multiplexing.
Advanced digital signal processing for short-haul and access network

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) has been proved to be a successful technology recently in high speed and high spectrum-efficiency optical short-haul and access network, which enables high performances based on digital equalizations and compensations. In this paper, we investigate advanced DSP at the transmitter and receiver side for signal pre-equalization and post-equalization in an optical access network. A novel DSP-based digital and optical pre-equalization scheme has been proposed for bandwidth-limited high speed short-distance communication system, which is based on the feedback of receiver-side adaptive equalizers, such as least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm and constant or multi-modulus algorithms (CMA, MMA). Based on this scheme, we experimentally demonstrate 400GE on a single optical carrier based on the highest ETDM 120-GBaud PDM-PAM-4 signal, using one external modulator and coherent detection. A line rate of 480-Gb/s is achieved, which enables 20% forward-error correction (FEC) overhead to keep the 400-Gb/s net information rate. The performance after fiber transmission shows large margin for both short range and metro/regional networks. We also extend the advanced DSP for short haul optical access networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and demonstrate a high speed multi-band CAP-WDM-PON system on intensity modulation, direct detection and digital equalizations. A hybrid modified cascaded MMA post-equalization schemes are used to equalize the multi-band CAP-mQAM signals. Using this scheme, we successfully demonstrates 550Gb/s high capacity WDM-PON system with 11 WDM channels, 55 sub-bands, and 10-Gb/s per user in the downstream over 40-km SMF.

Abstract:The general methods for detecting spread spectrum signal and estimating its parameters, with their merits and demerits, are briefly discussed in this paper. In the detection of 2~ 18 long code spread spectrum signal, these methods are difficult to realize in engineering due to the magnitude of data and calculation. The basic principle of a new detection method, namely fast searching and correlation cumulating, is discussed in detail. This method has been successfully applied in practice, realizing process control and calculation of correlation cumulating in the FPGA hardware platform, and completing the detection and parameters-estimation of 2~ 18 long code DS signals. This method can be also used in the reconnaissance of other DS signals with different length codes.

Abstract:The direct transmission of digital baseband signals has practical significance in the field of Ethernet terminal connection, high-speed digital communication, data transmission of various types of information peripherals. The signal amplitude gradually decays while the transmission distance increases. Also the attenuation is proportional to the signal frequency, resulting in signal distortion and receiving error. It is a common method for digital baseband signal transmission to use pre-emphasis chip and equalizer chip to improve the transmission quality with a wide range of mature applications. This paper describes a new type of digital signal transmission method, as the receiver using analog-to-digital converter, instead of equalizer chip, to achieve the multi-level quantization of receiving time-domain data waveform. The waveform of the transmitted digital high and low level signal is sampled into multi-bit values. Then, the paper realizes adaptive frequency domain equalization based on soft threshold and makes use of multi-level quantization soft information for error correction. Error correcting code is mainly used to correct the error caused by the channel bandwidth limit, external noise or interference in the process of data transmission, so as to improve the stability and reliability of the transmission. The paper uses the two-stage error correcting codec system based on both Turbo and BCH coding, to achieve the high performance of Turbo code, and good characters of respond time and complexity. The transmitter outputs 12.5 MHz pseudo-random sequence through a 199.93 meter unshielded balanced twisted pair transmission medium. And the receiver circuit using a 62.5MSPS analog-to-digital converter over-samples the waveform to 8-level quantity. The output error of a 65536 bit pseudo-random sequence is less than 8 bits, and the error correction can be further improved by 8b-10b codec. Compared with the traditional pre-emphasis and balanced interface ICs connection, the method described in this article has the advantages of longer transmission distance, better flexibility and wider scope of use.

Abstract:Compared with the conventional pulse-shaping transmission system, the full Nyquist rate transmission system with large bandwidth is sensitive to the sampling phase. It has only one sample available in one symbol period and is easily interfered by the channel, which does not allow the traditional symbol synchronization methods to be used directly. Another challenge is that the resource utilization for sampling data processing needs to be minimized due to the excessive consumption of the high data throughput in hardware resources. To solve these issues, we propose a symbol synchronization method based on the combination of software and hardware, which mainly includes two processes: Obtaining the initial phase by using Chirp signal and MOE criterion before communication; tracking the real-time phase using an on-line gradient table and frequency domain analysis of known data during communication. Both processes are proceeded with a phase adjustable clock. Through hardware verification, the sampling phase can be kept close to the optimal phase, thus ensuring the accuracy of the sampling data, and improving the system BER performance.

Abstract:High date rate is one of the important targets in future communication systems, which requires large bandwidth. However, the multibit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with such a high rate and large bandwidth will have a large power consumption and high implementation complexity. Therefore, monobit receivers have been proposed. In this paper, we concentrate on the channel estimation and equalization for monobit transmission system, which is not investigated up to now. To our surprise, the channel state information (CSI) can be estimated accurately in the condition of one bit quantization, with the proposed greedy pursuit algorithm and iterative method. The minimum mean square error (MMSE) pre-equalizer is then applied to suppress the effect of inter symbol interference (ISI) of the multipath channel. The bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed algorithm is presented and compared with that of full CSI acknowledge. With the pre-equalizer, the ISI effect is canceled almost completely and “error floor” is eliminated as well. The BER performance can be boosted significantly.

Abstract:Digital noise generators are basic components in communication channel emulators which are used to make the test and verification of communication systems easy and fast. In this paper, a novel scheme of implementing high-speed high-probability-resolution digital AWGN generator is proposed based on a derived universal algorithm for any white f(x)-distributed noise generation. The precision and the hardware complexity of the proposed AWGN generator are discussed in detail. Implemented with FPGA, the presented AWGN generator is utilized to test a high- speed UWB communication system and performs well with excellent precision in noise probability distribution. The proposed novel scheme of implementing digital noise generators is important and helpful in building communication channel emulators to test and verify communication systems.

Abstract:High-baud-rate coherent optical system is essential to support the ever-increasing demand for high-speed applications. Owing to the recent progress in advanced modulation formats, over 1 Tb/s single-carrier data transmission has been achieved in the laboratory, and its commercial application is envisioned in the near future. This paper presented the trend of increasing baud rate and utilizing high-order quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM), and several enabling technologies in the coherent optical communication systems. We first discussed recent progress of high-order QAM system and digital signal processing technology. Furthermore, we compared the transmission performance of three different ultrahigh-order QAM formats. The paper then reviewed the commonly used methods of achieving over 100 GBaud optically modulated signals. Besides, five attractive modulators and their corresponding modulation structures are illustrated. Key performance parameters including electrode length, 3-dB bandwidth, half-wave voltage, extinction ratio and optical loss are also compared. Finally, the trade-off between the baud rate and QAM orders in implementing high-speed systems are investigated in simulations. The results show that for the coming 800 GbE or 1.6 TbE, PDM-64-QAM might be an idea choice by considering the trade-off between the link reach and required system bandwidth. By adopting the latest probabilistic shaping technology, higher-order QAM signals, such as PS PDM-256-QAM, could be favorable for long reach applications while using extra system bandwidth.

Abstract:Ultra-high baud rate signal generation and detection is of great importance for future intra-data-center interconnect (intra-DCI). In this work, based on a single digital-to-analog convertor (DAC) with 120GSa/s sampling rate, we experimentally demonstrate sub-sampling generation of pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) signals by using high-order partial response narrowing (HPRN) scheme. High-order partial response is utilized to concentrate most of the signal energy into the Nyquist region of DAC sampling rate. A digital brick-wall filter is then employed to avoid spectral overlap by removing the out-of-band components in the frequency domain. The manually induced inter-symbol interference (ISI) can be eliminated by maximum likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) at the receiver. In the experiment, 210Gbaud on-off keying (OOK) signal can be successfully generated and transmitted over 500m standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with bit-error rate (BER) below the 20% hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 1.5×10−2, achieving sub-sampling rate of 0.571. For high-order modulation formats, 217.5Gb/s (145Gbaud) PAM-3 BTB generation and 256Gb/s (128Gbaud) PAM-4 500m transmission are also realized, respectively. Furthermore, for coherent detection systems, 160Gbaud quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal generation is demonstrated by applying HPRN on the in-phase and quadrature components separately, and using carrier phase recovery including pilot symbol group-based coarse estimation and shaped constellation-based blind phase search (BPS) algorithm. The results reveal that the HPRN scheme can extend the usage of DAC at the expense of higher optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) for 200G high-speed optical links and beyond.

Abstract:The recent rapid development of digital UWB wireless communications has led to the need for ultra-high rate A/D converters (ADCs). In this paper, the design algorithms for digital UWB receiver based on A/D conversion in the frequency domain have been presented, which can obviously reduce the ADCs speed requirements compared with conventional time-domain ADC. Important issues in the frequency domain A/D converters, such as quantization noise, optimal bit allocation, are discussed in detail. Frequency domain frame synchronization, channel estimation and demodulation algorithms are also proposed.

Abstract:Spectrum efficient data transmission is of key interest for high capacity optical communication systems considering the limited available bandwidth. Transmission of the high speed signal with higher-order modulation formats within the Nyquist bandwidth using coherent detection brings attractive performance advantages. However, high speed Nyquist signal generation with high order modulation formats is challenging. Electrical Nyquist pulse generation is restricted by the limited sampling rate and processor capacities of digital-to-analog convertor devices, while the optical Nyquist signals can provide a much higher symbol rate using time domain multiplexing method. However, most optical Nyquist signals are based on direct detection with simple modulation formats. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of high speed all optical Nyquist signal generation based on Sinc -shaped pulse generation and time-division multiplexing with high level modulation format and full-band coherent detection. Our experiments demonstrate a highly flexible and compatible all optical high speed Nyquist signal generation and detection scheme for future fiber communication systems.
