Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate individual OCT precoding and SVD-based adaptive loading to boost the capacity of MIMO-OFDM VLC systems. For 1.5-Gbit/s 1-m transmission. the average BER can be reduced from 1.7 X 10(-2) to 4.1x 10(-3) and 4.7x 10(-4), respectively.

Abstract:We report on experimental demonstration of 2x2 MIMO-OFDM 5.6-GHz radio over fiber signaling over 20 km WDM-PON with directly modulated (DM) VCSELs for femtocells application. MIMO-OFDM algorithms effectively compensate for impairments in the wireless link. Error-free signal demodulation of 64 subcarrier 4-QAM signals modulated at 198.5 Mb/s net data rate is achieved after fiber and 2 m indoor wireless transmission. We report BER of 7x10(-3) at the receiver for 16-QAM signals modulated at 397 Mb/s after 1 m of wireless transmission. Performance dependence on different wireless transmission path lengths, antenna separation, and number of subcarriers have been investigated.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel configuration of VLC(visible light communication) system based on sub-carrier multiplexing of MIMO-OFDM is proposed. The system consists of a MIMO array of white LEDs to transmit and receive data. The data is respectively modulated by two sub-carriers at 6.25MHz and 12.5MHz. An overview of the system configuration is described, and the transmission experiment is implemented. Related experimental description, results and analysis are reported in this paper.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) based on a light-emitting diode (LED) is considered to be a potential candidate for the next-generation communication. In this paper, a novel Zadoff–Chu matrix transform (ZCT) precoding is proposed to improve the performance of the traditional space-time block coding- (STBC-) based multiple-input multiple-output and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system. Compared with the existing orthogonal circulant matrix transform (OCT) precoding scheme, the proposed ZCT precoding achieves a much lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) while maintaining the advantage of the uniform signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which reduces the performance loss caused by LED nonlinearity. To study the system performance further, we set up an experimental demonstration to verify performance improvement under the condition of different driving peak-to-peak voltages (Vpps) and direct current (DC) offsets. Experimental results show that ZCT precoding gains the best bit error rate (BER) performance compared with the traditional and the OCT precoding MIMO-OFDM systems, whose BER is always below the 7% pre-forward error correction (pre-FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10−3.

Abstract:Asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) has been a promising candidate in visible light communications (VLC) due to its improvement in power efficiency and reduction of nonlinearity based on previous simulation analysis. In this paper, for the first time as far as we know, we experimentally verify that ACO-OFDM would be an efficient scheme to improve the performance of a gigabit wavelength division multiplexing VLC system. Our theoretical investigations reveal that the advantages of ACO-OFDM can be attributed to the reduction of inter-carrier interference caused by signal-signal beating noise. An aggregate data rate of 1.05 Gb/s is successfully achieved over 30 cm transmission below the 7% forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). The experimental results show that ACO-OFDM can outperform DC-biased optical OFDM by BER performance of 1.5 dB at the same data rate and 4 dB at the same bandwidth, which clearly demonstrates the benefit and feasibility of ACO-OFDM. Abstract:An experimental demonstration of a nonimaging multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) visible light communication (VLC) system based on a cubic receiver is reported in this paper. The receiver is designed to have five photodetectors as a cubic structure to solve the problem of an ill-conditioned channel matrix. The experiment employs four independent white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as transmitters. Each of them transmits a different bit stream with orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation and a bit-and-power allocation algorithm. By measuring the highest achievable overall data rate in the typical illumination scene, the performance of the multiplexing gain of the system is demonstrated. The experimental results reveal that the highest spectral efficiency is about 14.5 bit/s/Hz, and the multiplexing gain is up to 2.134 times at the center point among four LEDs. Besides, the system can support user mobility in real time, since it does not require the receiver adjustment and alignment.

Abstract:In this paper, an orthogonal circulant matrix transform (OCT) precoding technique is proposed to combine with the entropy loading in the multiple-input multiple-output and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) visible light communication (VLC) system where the space-time coding (STBC) is chosen for its robustness to the channel correlation. Benefitting from the OCT precoding technique, the uniform signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) among all the subchannels can be achieved. As a result, only one SNR value is required to be fed back, and the same distribution matcher is employed during probabilistic shaping (PS), which means much lower feedback overhead and system complexity than the conventional entropy loading scheme. Experimental results show that the OCT precoding does not cause the system performance loss where the achievable information rate (AIR) of the proposed system is comparable with the conventional system without precoding. With an available bandwidth of ∼25 MHz, the proposed scheme can realize the AIR of 50.75 Mb/s at the expense of 0.45% average forward error correction (FEC) overhead (OH).

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed 2×2 MIMO real-time VLC system based on 64QAM-Discrete Multi-Tone (64QAM-DMT) modulation. The system was achieved by utilizing field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and silicon substrate LEDs. The effect of attenuation of the attenuator in transmitter and receiver, the aperture diameter of the received signal, code rate and different modulation order have been investigated in our experiment. The experimental results show that our real-time VLC system can transmit over 2m distance for an overall 5Gb/s successfully.

Abstract:We propose a configuration of a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)-visible light communication (VLC) system using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation and an adaptive Nyquist windowing of the OFDM signal in the receiver.Based on this configuration, we demonstrate a 750-Mb/s WDM-VLC transmission based on RGB light-emitting diode (LED) with a distance of 70 cm.The measured bit error rate (BER) for all channels are under the pre-forward error correction limit of 3.8×10 -3 .The BER performances of all the channels of the proposed WDM-VLC system show considerable improvement compared with those of the system without Nyquist windowing.

Abstract:In this paper, we have experimentally demonstrated the feasibility of a LMS-Volterra based joint MIMO equalizer in multiband super-Nyquist carrierless amplitude phase modulation visible light communication system. To obtain higher spectrum efficiency, overlapping between different sub-bands is introduced in this experiment. By using joint MIMO equalizer, an aggregate data rate of 1.26 Gb/s is successfully achieved in 1-m indoor free space transmission with the BER below the 7% FEC limit of 3.8 x 10(-3). To our best knowledge, this is the first time that our proposed joint MIMO equalizer is used to equalize multiband super-Nyquist data in VLC system. Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) has received more and more attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose a novel configuration of unidirectional subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) -wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) -VLC system adopting quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. Based on this configuration, we successfully demonstrate a 3x1 multiple-input single-output (MISO) OFDM-VLC transmission experiment using three blue phosphor LEDs. The transmission distance can be as long as 140cm. We also demonstrate an 800-Mb/s MISO SCM-WDM VLC transmission experiment based on RGB-LED with 66-cm transmission distance. In the two experiments, pre-equalization and post-equalization both are implemented to compensate for the poor frequency response of LEDs. And the properties of EVM and BER in all channels are measured and analysed.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) using high power light emitting diodes (LEDs) for high speed communication becomes a new area which draws increasing attention. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed VLC system based on Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) for the first time. We change the value of different factors and compare the performance of the system in order to find the effect of different factors. The experimental results show that the bit error rate (BER) for an overall 1.2Gb/s 64QAM and 32QAM signal over 40 cm transmission can be under the 7% forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8×10 -3 . Meanwhile, we clearly demonstrate the benefit and feasibility of DFT-S OFDM modulation format for the high speed VLC system.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing/offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/OQAM) has the advantage of high spectral efficiency due to non-requirement of cyclic prefix (CP) and guard band. However, the high direct current (DC) used in OFDM/OQAM is power inefficient for visible light communication (VLC). In this letter, an enhanced OFDM/OQAM (EO-OFDM/OQAM) scheme is proposed for VLC, which is inspired by the idea of the pulse-amplitude-modulation based hybrid optical OFDM (PHO-OFDM) scheme. In this system, the half of subcarriers of the normal branch carry useful data while the remaining subcarriers are selected to carry negative clipping noise instead of useful data for improving the power efficiency, and a flexible power allocation method is introduced. The simulation results show that compared with the PHO-OFDM, the proposed scheme has a better bit error rate (BER) performance under the same average bit rate without additional operations of interference regeneration and cancellation.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a visible light communication (VLC) system based on a single commercially available RGB-type LED. High spectrally efficient carrierless amplitude and phase (CAP) modulation and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) are adopted in the intensity-modulation and direct-detection VLC system of limited bandwidth. In order to achieve higher capacity of the uneven-frequency-response LED-based VLC system, OFDM signals are combined with the bit- and power-loading techniques, and CAP signals of various modulation are pre-emphasized to modulate one of the RGB chips. To reach the BER of less than 10-3, CAP and OFDM signals demonstrate the maximum data rates of 1.32 and 1.08 Gb/s, respectively, employing the blue chip. In addition to spectrally efficient formats, the wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) scheme is applied to further increase the capacity. After individually optimizing RGB chips, the maximum aggregate data rates of CAP and OFDM are 3.22 and 2.93 Gb/s, respectively, in our RGB-LED-based WDM VLC system. Hence, compared with OFDM, the CAP scheme shows competitive performance and provides an alternative spectrally efficient modulation for next generation optical wireless networks.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a high-speed 2 × 2 non-imaging multiple-input multiple-output nyquist single carrier visible light communication system. Two commercially available blue light emitting diodes with 3 dB electrical bandwidth of 10 MHz and two avalanche photo diodes with 3 dB electrical bandwidth of 100 MHz are used as transmitters and receivers, respectively. A frequency domain equalization method based on two pairs of time-multiplexed training symbols is proposed, which allows de-multiplexing and post-equalization simultaneously processing in one step. Frequency domain averaging and time-domain averaging are also implemented and analyzed in this paper. In this demonstration, the overall data rate is 500 Mb/s. The measured bit error rates for two receivers are both below the 7% pre-forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 ×10-3 after 40 cm free-air transmission.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is emerging as a promising technique to provide ubiquitous wireless connection. In this paper, a multiuser VLC system utilizing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is investigated. Since the distances of the multiple transmitter-receiver links are different, their temporal delays are also different, resulting in complex channel gain and phase differences when transformed to the frequency domain. For each subcarrier in OFDM, the corresponding precoding matrix is calculated in the frequency domain to eliminate multiuser interference. Phase information in the frequency domain is first considered, where complex, instead of real, channel matrices are used for precoding, which reduces the channel correlation and achieves better performance. Moreover, minimum dc bias, unified dc bias, and asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM-based schemes are proposed to generate real-valued nonnegative signals for intensity modulation, and their performances are validated via simulations with zero forcing and minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) precoding techniques.
