Abstract:TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiO2-NTAs) were respectively fabricated using traditional one-step oxidation and re-oxidation method on a titanium surface in fluorine-containing electrolytes. Microstructures, optical properties of specimen were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, digital microscope, field-emission scanning electron microscope and ultraviolet-visible spectroscope. Compared with the one-step oxidation, the resulted samples showed more uniform surface, longer tube length and statistical higher absorption in visible light region. Importantly, a new growth mechanism named template-induced growth model is proposed to explain the growth of TiO2-NTAs prepared by re-oxidation approach in present work. Besides, water contact angles of samples before and after irradiated by UV light were measured and discussed in detail. It is confirmed that samples obtained from re-oxidation method have more hydroxyl groups can be formed when irradiated by UV light, which lead to more sensitive light-induced hydrophilicity finally. The light-induced hydrophilic performance of TiO2-NTAs would be favorable to improve the likelihood of electrolyte contacting of the surface, which is useful in many realistic application instances. Abstract:TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs) were hydrothermally grown on transparent fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates, and were converted into nanotubes (NTAs) by hydrothermally in situ etching. Ag nanoparticles (NPLs) were sensitized on the NRAs and NTAs by a simple photodeposition approach (products were denoted as Ag-TiO2 NRAs and NTAs). The Ag-TiO2 NTAs samples possessed a large specific surface area (116 m(2) g(-1)) with Ag NPLs homogeneously dispersed among the TiO2 NTAs. The Ag-TiO2 NTAs exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activities (98.8%) in degradation of methyl orange (MO) compared to Ag-TiO2 NRAs (92.6%), TiO2 NTAs (86.2%), and NRAs (81.7%). The enhanced photocatalytic activities can be attributed to the large specific surface area of TiO2 NTAs and strong surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag NPLs. In addition, Ag-TiO2 NTAs showed easy recovery feature in the recovery process and high durability in the recycling test, which was expected to be an efficient and practical photocatalyst used for waste water treatment. Abstract:Self-organized, freestanding TiO2 nanotube arrays that exhibit tube-in-tube morphology are fabricated using a one-step anodic method. These arrays are uniform and compact. The tubes within the arrays are several micrometers long with a 200 nm outer diameter. They have a coarse lateral profile that leads to a large aspect ratio and guarantees good photocatalytic properties.

Abstract:One dimensional (1D) single crystalline nanostructures facilitate electron transport and reduce the charge recombination; whilst nanotubular structure and a roughened surface provide more active sites as well as more opportunities for target molecules to reach the photocatalyst. As a result, TiO2 thin films with such a structural design can be anticipated to possess excellent photocatalytic activity. In this study, top opened nanowires with nanoprotrusions on the surface, which are hierarchical yet single crystalline as a whole, were synthesized by a simple acid treatment at 80°C for 36h of hydrothermally synthesized titanate nanowires, followed by a final calcination at 450°C for 1h. The hierarchical TiO2 films exhibited significantly enhanced efficiency when utilized to assist the photodegradation of rhodamine B and phenol in water under UV light illumination.

Abstract:Titania nanowire arrays were fabricated by interactions of Ti substrates with hydrogen peroxide solutions containing melamine and nitric acid at a low temperature of 353 K for 72 h, followed by a subsequent thermal treatment at 723 K for 1 h. The titania nanowire was anatase with a mean diameter of 25 nm and an aspect ratio of ca. 40. The film possessed high activity to assist the photodegradation of rhodamine B in water under the illumination of simulated solar light.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reactions on TiO2 have recently gained an enormous resurgence because of various new strategies and findings that promise to drastically increase efficiency and specificity of such reactions by modifications of the titania scaffold and chemistry. In view of geometry, in particular, anodic TiO2 nanotubes have attracted wide interest, as they allow a high degree of control over the separation of photogenerated charge carriers not only in photocatalytic reactions but also in photoelectrochemical reactions. A key advantage of ordered nanotube arrays is that nanotube modifications can be embedded site specifically into the tube wall; that is, cocatalysts, doping species, or junctions can be placed at highly defined desired locations (or with a desired regular geometry or pattern) along the tube wall. This allows an unprecedented level of engineering of energetics of reaction sites for catalytic and photocatalytic reactions, which target not only higher efficiencies but also the selectivity of reactions. Many recent tube alterations are of a morphologic nature (mesoporous structures, designed faceted crystallites, hybrids, or 1D structures), but a number of color-coded (namely, black, blue, red, green, gray) modifications have attracted wide interest because of the extension of the light absorption spectrum of titania in the visible range and because unique catalytic activity can be induced. The present Perspective gives an overview of TiO2 nanotubes in photocatalysis with an emphasis on the most recent advances in the use of nanotube arrays and discusses the underlying concepts in tailoring their photocatalytic reactivity.

Controllable Synthesis of Well-Ordered TiO2 Nanotubes in a Mixed Organic Electrolyte for High-Efficiency Photocatalysis

Abstract:Well-ordered TiO 2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) were fabricated by electrochemical anodization in a mixed organic electrolyte consisting of ethylene glycol and glycerol. The morphology, structure, crystalline phase, and photocatalytic properties of TNAs were characterized by using TEM, SEM, XRD and photodegradation of methylene blue. It was found that the morphology and structure of TNAs could be significantly influenced by the anodization time and applied voltage. The obtained tube length was found to be proportional to anodization time, and the calculated growth rate of nanotubes was 0.6 μm/h. The microstructure analysis demonstrated that the diameter and thickness of the nanotubes increased with the increase of anodization voltage. The growth mechanism of TNAs was also proposed according to the observed relationship between current density and time during anodization. As expected, the obtained TNAs showed a higher photocatalytic activity than the commercial TiO 2 P25 nanoparticles.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.

Abstract:Controlled synthesis of hierarchically assembled titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanostructures is important for practical applications in environmental purification and solar energy conversion. We present here the fabrication of interconnected TiO2 nanotubes as a macroscopic bulk material by using a porous carbon nanotube (CNT) sponge as a template. The basic idea is to uniformly coat an amorphous titania layer onto the CNT surface by the infiltration of a TiO2 precursor into the sponge followed by a subsequent hydrolysis process. After calcination, the CNTs are completely removed and the titania is simultaneously crystallized, which results in a porous macrostructure composed of interconnected anatase TiO2 nanotubes. The TiO2 nanotube macrostructures show comparable photocatalytic activities to commercial products (AEROXIDE TiO2 P25) for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). Moreover, the TiO2 nanotube macrostructures can be settled and separated from water within 12 h after photocatalysis, whereas P25 remains suspended in solution after weeks. Thus the TiO2 nanotube macrostructures offer the advantage of easy catalyst separation and recycle and can be a promising candidate for wastewater treatment.
One-Step Fabrication of Cds Nanoparticle-Sensitized Tio2 Nanotube Arrays Via Electrodeposition

Abstract:CdS nanoparticle-sensitized TiO2 (CdS-TiO2) nanotube arrays are synthesized with a facile one-step electrodeposition technique. In these composited nanostructures, CdS nanoparticles uniformly distribute in the TiO2 nanotubes and partially embed in the shell of TiO2 nanotubes. These structures effectively prevent CdS nanoparticles assembling or clogging the nanotubes and improve the contact area between CdS nanoparticles and the TiO2 shells. Furthermore, the size and distribution density of CdS nanoparticles can be tuned easily by controlling the concentration of electrolyte. Coupling TiO2 nanotubes with CdS nanoparticles extends the optical absorption from ultraviolet into the visible-light region up to 580 nm. An 11-fold enhancement in photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity is observed for CdS-TiO2 nanotube arrays compared with plain TiO2 nanotube arrays. This unique method is also suitable for the synthesis of other narrow band gap semiconductor-sensitized TiO2 nanotubes.

Abstract:Vertically aligned TiO2 nanowires exhibit excellent photoactivity because of the high specific surface area and increased charge separation; yet the limited adsorption capacity towards target pollutants hinders the photo catalytic degradation of pollutants in water. We report herein a mild solution approach to precipitate anatase TiO2 nanowire arrays, with a tunable thickness of 1.5-4.5 mu m, on carbon cloth to achieve simultaneously high adsorption capacity and excellent photoactivity. When compared with TiO2 nanowire arrays precipitated on metallic Ti substrates, which possess a negligible adsorption capacity, TiO2 nanowires loaded on the activated carbon cloth substrates exhibit a higher efficiency towards photocatalytic degradations of both rhodamine B dye molecules and colorless sulfosalicylic acid in water under UV light illumination. The increasing film thickness is more effective to increase the photoactivity of TiO2 nanowires loaded on the activated carbon cloth than those on metallic Ti foil. The current investigation establishes the feasibility to greatly improve the photoactivity of one-dimensional nanostructured TiO2 arrays by using a highly adsorptive substrate.

Abstract:The frontispiece image shows SEM images of tube-in-tube (TIT) TiO2 nanostructures with porous walls produced in a single step in HF and DMSO solution. The nanotubes are several micrometers long with an outer diameter of 200 nm. These novel nanostructures show potential for the formation of perpendicularly grown, 1D TiO2 nanotubes with enlarged surface areas due to their porous walls-a clear advantage in photocatalytic and solar energy conversion applications. A study of the mechanism shows that for the formation of the TIT TiO2 nanotubes, the equalfield strength growth and localized dissolution of the formed TiO2 tubular walls dominate the formation of this novel morphology. Abstract:The preparation of micropatterned TiO 2 nanotubes (NTs) with tunable morphologies by combining laser micromachining technology and an anodization method is reported. The micropatterned structure can be easily designed and fabricated by laser micromachining a titanium substrate, further anodization of which gives nanotube arrays perpendicularly oriented to the titanium surface. The patterned TiO 2 NTs show dramatically improved photocurrent and photocatalytic performances because of their enhanced surface area and light‐harvesting capability. The photocurrent density and incident‐photon‐to‐current efficiency at the peak absorption increases by 48 and 39%, respectively, compared to a TiO 2 NT array without a patterned structure. It was also found that micropatterning dramatically improves the mechanical stability of the TiO 2 NTs on the substrate, which otherwise were liable to peel off from the substrate surface. The strategy will reasonably expand the application of TiO 2 NTs in a variety of fields that require enhanced photo‐electrocatalysis and mechanical stability.

Abstract:In this work, we have synthesized a nano-heterostructure of TiO2 nanoparticles decorating TiO2 nanowires (TiO2 NPs/NWs). Both the TiO2 NPs and NWs show an anatase crystal phase with {101} facet predominately exposed. It is found that the ratio of NPs to NWs affects the dispersion of TiO2 NPs and their combination with TiO2 NWs, as well as the separation of photo-generated charges and further the photocatalytic activity of the material. The heterostructure with a TiO2 NPs to NWs ratio of 1:1 (NP0.5/NW0.5) shows high activity and excellent cycling stability in both Rhodamine B degradation and water splitting. A possible charge transfer mechanism on the TiO2 NPs/NWs hybrid has been proposed to clarify the correlation between material structure and performance. This work not only demonstrates the advantage of 0D-1D nano-heterostructures, but also provides a facile approach of designing and fabricating excellent catalysts for energy and environmental applications.
Tuning wall thickness of TiO2 microtubes for an enhanced photocatalytic activity with thickness-dependent charge separation efficiency

Abstract:TiO2 microtubes with tunable wall thickness have been synthesized by a one-step electrospinning method linked with a calcination process. The wall thickness of TiO2 microtubes can be easily tuned by altering the dosage of liquid paraffin. The influence of the thickness on the light-harvesting ability and separation efficiency of the photogenerated carriers was studied using ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence emission spectroscopy, and photocurrent density measurements. Results show that TiO2 microtubes with an appropriate thickness exhibit enhanced light scattering effect, UV–vis light-harvesting ability, charge separation efficiency, and photocatalytic performance. The degradation rates of rhodamine B and 2,4-dinitrophenol by using TiO2 microtubes synthesized at a dosage of 0.14 g/mL liquid paraffin are 99.9% within 60 min and 97.8% within 40 min, respectively, which are higher than most of the reported values. All these results suggest that our work provides an ideal strategy for adjusting the wall thickness of TiO2 microtubes and new approach to enhance the photocatalytic performance of TiO2.

Abstract:This article reports on the synthesis of TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) with tunable morphologies by adjusting the reaction conditions during anodization to balance electrochemical reaction and chemical etching. Nanoporous and free-standing NTs with different lengths and diameters are thus obtained in a controlled manner, solving the bundling, sealing, and etching pit issues in the conventional anodization. The high growth speed (60 mu m/h) of TiO2 NT arrays with the pore diameter of 120 nm was achieved. The photoelectrochemical response of the NT photoelectrodes is studied under both UV and visible illumination from 250 to 600 nm, showing that the photoresponse occurred between 300-400 nm with the maximum value at 355 nm. The nanoporous TiO2 film has the higher photocurrent density than the nonporous NTs array because of fewer defects and perfect alignment. However, the photocatalytic performance to degrade methylene blue showed an inverse trend: the free-standing TiO2 NTs have better photocatalytic degradation than the nanoporous TiO2 NT film probably due to the larger effective contact area.

Abstract:Well-aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays were fabricated by anodizing Ti foil in viscous F− containing organic electrolytes, and the crystal structure and morphology of the TiO2 nanotube array were characterized and analyzed by XRD, SEM, and TEM, respectively. The photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 nanotube arrays was evaluated in the photocatalytic (PC) and photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye in different supporting solutions. The excellent performance of ca. 97% for color removal was reached after 90 min in the PEC process compared to that of PC process which indicates that a certain external potential bias favors the promotion of the electrode reaction rate on TiO2 nanotube array when it is under illumination. In addition, it is found that PEC process conducted in supporting solutions with low pH and containing Cl− is also beneficial to accelerate the degradation rate of MB.

Abstract:Microporous materials are extensively used in catalysis due to their unique pore structures. Among them, microporous materials loaded with polyoxometalates (POMs) exhibit considerable potential for catalysis thanks to the combination of the outstanding redox-catalytic properties of POMs and the characteristics of microporous materials. Based on this, we developed a facile hydrothermal method to synthesize helical microporous nanorods (HMNRs) using POM clusters as building blocks, combining the properties of both POMs and microporous materials while circumventing the complicated loading process. The HMNRs show an enhanced photocatalytic performance for toluene oxidation. Comparatively high activity, superior selectivity towards benzaldehyde, and prominent cycling stability were achieved, manifesting a promising prospect for a future application in photocatalysis.
