Abstract:We report a novel reversible color switching system based on one-pot hydrogenation/oxygenation reactions over Pd/CeO2-x catalysts and fast interconversion of thionine (TH+) and leuco thionine (LTH). Abstract:In this paper, we present the use of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) supported palladium nanoparticles (Pd/g-C3N4) for reversible color switching of methylene blue (MB). g-C3N4 with a high polymeric degree could improve the dispersity of Pd nanoparticles, contributing to fast color switching of MB as the agglomeration of metal nanoparticles is significantly prevented. Moreover, strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between Pd nanoparticles and g-C3N4 support promotes the adsorption and subsequent dissociation of molecular hydrogen and oxygen, thus leading to efficient reversible conversion between MB and leuco-methylene blue (LMB). Our obtained Pd/g-C3N4 nanocatalyst exhibits outstanding hydrogenation activity of blue MB to colorless LMB with a turnover frequency as high as 165 h(-1) at room temperature, moreover, colorless LMB can quickly switch back to MB upon exposing the same reaction system to oxygen for oxidation. It is noted that our color switching system exhibits remarkable reversibility and stability without obvious fatigue even after 10 consecutive cycles. This novel redox-driven reversible color switching system could find potential in food packaging, sensing and organic transformations.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy has the merits of high energy value and zero carbon emissions, but its practical application is hindered by the intensive energy input required for dehydrogenation of liquid hydrocarbons (170-300 degrees C). Herein, toward highly efficient dehydrogenation of saturated N-heterocycles, assembly of PdO on carbon vacancy-abundant carbon nitride skeleton derived from in situ Zr-doping was demonstrated to improve catalyst with superior performance under mild conditions. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed that the Zr-doped carbon nitride (Zr-C3N4) support showed a higher number of lone pair electrons and faster electron transfer rate compared with the parent. Strong interaction between PdO and the C3N4 skeleton was proved by the hydrogenation temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR) and XPS. By efficiently turning the electronic properties of PdO by Zr-C3N4, in which the affinity influences the strength of the metal-support interactions and therefore PdO dispersion, the as-prepared prototype catalyst PdO/Zr-C3N4 was capable of achieving complete dehydrogenation of a series of saturated N-heterocycles at only 140 degrees C within 8 h, supassing the performance rendered by most of the catalytic systems reported so far. This work offers a promising pathway for energy-efficient and cost-effective hydrogen energy utilization under practical conditions.

Abstract:We report a novel photoreversible color switching system based on the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanocrystals and the redox-driven color switching property of methylene blue (MB). This system rapidly changes from blue to colorless under UV irradiation and recovers its original blue color under visible light irradiation. We have identified four major competing reactions that contribute to the photoreversible switching, among which two are dominant: the decoloration process is mainly driven by the reduction of MB to leuco MB by photogenerated electrons from TiO2 nanocrystals under UV irradiation, and the recoloration process operates by the TiO2-induced self-catalyzed oxidation of LMB under visible irradiation. Compared with the conventional color switching systems based on photoisomerization of chromophores, our system has not only low toxicity but also significantly improved switching rate and cycling performance. It is envisioned that this photoreversible system may promise unique opportunities for many light-driven actuating or color switching applications.
Metal-Organic Capsules with NADH Mimics As Switchable Selectivity Regulators for Photocatalytic Transfer Hydrogenation.

Abstract:Switchable selective hydrogenation among the groups in multifunctional compounds is challenging because selective hydrogenation is of great interest in the synthesis of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals as a result of the importance of key intermediates. Herein, we report a new approach to highly selectively (>99%) reducing C=X (X = O, N) over the thermodynamically more favorable nitro groups locating the substrate in a metal-organic capsule containing NADH active sites. Within the capsule, the NADH active sites reduce the double bonds via a typical 2e(-) hydride transfer hydrogenation, and the formed excited-state NAD(+) mimics oxidize the reductant via two consecutive 1e(-) processes to regenerate the NADH active sites under illumination. Outside the capsule, nitro groups are highly selectively reduced through a typical 1e(-) hydrogenation. By combining photoinduced 1e(-) transfer regeneration outside the cage, both 1e(-) and 2e(-) hydrogenation can be switched controllably by varying the concentrations of the substrates and the redox potential of electron donors. This promising alternative approach, which could proceed under mild reaction conditions and use easy-to-handle hydrogen donors with enhanced high selectivity toward different groups, is based on the localization and differentiation of the 2e(-) and 1e(-) hydrogenation pathways inside and outside the capsules, provides a deep comprehension of photocatalytic microscopic reaction processes, and will allow the design and optimization of catalysts. We demonstrate the advantage of this method over typical hydrogenation that involves specific activation via well-modified catalytic sites and present results on the high, well-controlled, and switchable selectivity for the hydrogenation of a variety of substituted and bifunctional aldehydes, ketones, and imines.

Abstract:Abstract Palladium catalyst turnover by reoxidation of a low-valent Pd species dominates the proceeding of an efficient oxidative transformation, but the state-of-the-art catalysis approaches still have great challenges from the perspectives of high efficiency, atom-economy and environmental-friendliness. Herein, we report a new strategy for addressing Pd reoxidation problem by the fabrication of spatially proximate Ir III photocatalyst and Pd II catalyst into metal-organic framework (MOF), affording MOFs based Pd/photoredox catalysts UiO-67-Ir-PdX 2 (X = OAc, TFA), which are systematically evaluated using three representative Pd-catalyzed oxidation reactions. Owing to the stabilization of single-site Pd and Ir catalysts by MOFs framework as well as the proximity of them favoring fast electron transfer, UiO-67-Ir-PdX 2 , under visible light, exhibits up to 25 times of Pd catalyst turnover number than the existing catalysis systems. Mechanism investigations theoretically corroborate the capability of MOFs based Pd/photoredox catalysis to regulate the competitive processes of Pd 0 aggregation and reoxidation in Pd-catalyzed oxidation reactions.

Visible-Light-Promoted Switchable Selective Oxidations of Styrene over Covalent Triazine Frameworks in Water.

Abstract:Using photocatalytic oxidation to convert basic chemicals into high value compounds in environmentally benign reaction media is a current focus in catalytic research. The challenge lies in gaining controllability over product formation selectivity. We design covalent triazine frameworks as heterogeneous, metal-free, and recyclable photocatalysts for visible-light-driven switchable selective oxidation of styrene in pure water. Selectivity in product formation was achieved by activation or deactivation of the specific photogenerated oxygen species. Using the same photocatalyst, by deactivation of photogenerated H2 O2 , benzaldehyde was obtained with over 99 % conversion and over 99 % selectivity as a single product. The highly challenging and sensitive epoxidation of styrene was carried out by creating peroxymonocarbonate as an initial epoxidation agent in the presence of bicarbonate, which led to formation of styrene oxide with a selectivity up to 76 % with near quantitative conversion. This study demonstrates a preliminary yet interesting example for simple control over switchable product formation selectivity for challenging oxidation reactions of organic compounds in pure water.

Abstract:Hydrogen has a remarkably flexible chemistry in oxides. We show that the introduction of H into simple TiO2 leads to greatly enhanced photocatalytic properties, and specifically yields a 60 times enhancement of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity over commercial rutile. The hydrogenated TiO2 (H-TiO2) is synthesized by a new one-step wet-chemistry approach yielding switchable defect via controlled annealing. As-prepared H-TiO2 has Ti-H bonds in the lattice from replacement of oxygen by hydrogen atoms. The Ti-H bonds are converted to oxygen vacancies by loss of H2O with Ar annealing. Oppositely, Ti-H defects are healed by Ti-O with O2 annealing. The strongly enhanced photocatalytic activity is associated with increased visible light absorption and effective separation of photogenerated carriers. This work provides a new and powerful approach for the preparation of hydrogenated titanium dioxide with switchable defect control, and striking improvement of photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:The electronic structure of metal complexes plays key roles in determining their catalytic features. However, controlling electronic structures to regulate reaction mechanisms is of fundamental interest but has been rarely presented. Herein, we report electronic tuning of Cu porphyrins to switch pathways of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Throughcontrollable and regioselective β-oxidation of Cu porphyrin 1, we synthesized analogues 2-4 with one or two β-lactone groups in either a cis or trans configuration. Complexes 1-4 have the same Cu-N4 core site but different electronic structures. Although β-oxidation led to large anodic shifts of reductions, 1-4 displayed similar HER activities in terms of close overpotentials. With electrochemical, chemical and theoretical results, we show that the catalytically active species switches from a CuI species for 1 to a Cu0 species for 4. This work is thus significant to present mechanism-controllable HER via electronic tuning of catalysts.

Abstract:We have reported photochemical transfer hydrogenation/deuteration of activated alkenes using H2O/D2O as the H/D-source under metal-free condition. Importantly, this protocol showed excellent chemoselectivity towards activated C=C double bonds, and good tolerance towards unactivated C=C and C=O bonds. Both triethylamine and thiol function as the reducing agent. Mechanistic studies implied that the photochemical olefin hydrogenation proceeds via thio-Michael addition/reductive desulfurization. Furthermore, this transformation was suitable for other unsaturated compounds containing C=N and N=N bonds.

Abstract:A synergetic catalytic system of organophotocatalyst 4CzIPN, thianthrene, and methanol was developed for visible‐lightinduced Giese reactions of various alkanes and alkenes, upon using alkoxy radicals as hydrogen atom transfer reagents. The reaction can be performed under mild conditions to provide the alkylated products in moderate to excellent yields, avoiding the use of any strong oxidants and transition metal reagents. Different from the known LMCT and PCET processes, the key to success of this approach is the in situ thianthrenation of methanol by thianthrene radical cation to trigger the generation of methoxy radical.

Abstract:Hydrogenation of metallic oxides was effective to modulate the chemical/physical properties and realize various functional applications. Normally, the traditional hydrogenating route always required high temperature annealing in hydrogen gas assisted by noble metal catalyst (Au or Pd et al.) or treatment by hydrogen plasma in vacuum condition. In the current study, we achieved a facile hydrogenation route for WO3 films at ambient conditions by contacting a Zn particle in a diluted acid solution and proposed a so-called electron-proton synergistic doping (EPSD) process. Due to the electrochromic property of WO3 film, the hydrogenation induced color change from transparent to deep-blue could be directly observed by eyesight. In addition, the higher H-doping concentrating in WO3 film would induce much deeper blue color. Results showed that the crystallinity and microstructures of WO3 film dominated the EPSD process, which not only effected the Fermi level difference between the Zn particle and WO3 film, but also changed the migrating barrier of proton at the interface. This macroscopic hydrogenation of WO3 films at ambience conditions showed some potential applications for tunable electrochromic devices.

Abstract:Transition-metal-based catalysts are applied widely in the hydrogenation reaction of different organic compounds. However, serious deactivation occurs when the substrate contains strong coordinating functional groups or impurities. In this paper, we reported that a TiO2-x overlayer that formed over Ru NPs (Ru@TiO2-x/TiO2) under reduction conditions worked as a chemoselective, durable, and sulfur-resistant catalyst for the partial hydrogenation of quinoline and other N-heteroarenes. Mechanistic studies revealed that the inhibition of quinoline and its reduced product on the H-2 activation over the Ru NPs was eliminated on the active nonmetal overlayer of Ru@TiO2-x. The oxygen vacancies of the Ru@TiO2-x overlayer were determined to be the active sites for H-2 activation. The synergy between the TiO2-O-v (TiO2-x) active sites with the subsurface Ru particles effectively reduced the barriers of H-2 dissociation and H addition steps, enabling the nonmetal TiO2-O-v shell to catalyze the hydrogenation reaction at mild conditions with remarkable stability and poisoning resistance.
Discovery of a Thioxanthone–TfOH Complex As a Photoredox Catalyst for Hydrogenation of Alkenes Using P‐xylene As Both Electron and Hydrogen Sources

Abstract:Hydrogenation of alkenes is one of the most fundamental transformations in organic synthesis, and widely used in the petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries. Although numerous hydrogenation methods have been developed, novel types of catalysis with new mechanisms and new hydrogen sources are still desirable. Thioxanthone (TX) is widely used in energy-transfer photoreactions, but rarely in photoredox processes. Herein we show that a catalytic amount of TfOH as a co-catalyst can tune the properties of TX to make it a photoredox catalyst with highly enhanced oxidative capability in the hydrogenation of carbonylated alkenes with the cheap petroleum industrial product p-xylene serving as the hydrogen source. Deuterium can also be introduced by this method by using D2 O as the D source. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of using p-xylene as a hydrogen source.

Abstract:It is widely believed that the dehydrogenation of organic compounds is a thermodynamically unfavorable process, and thus requires stoichiometric oxidants such as dioxygen and metal oxides or sacrificial hydrogen acceptors to remove the hydrogen from the reaction mixture to drive the equilibrium towards the products. Here we report a previously unappreciated combination of common commercial Pd/C and H2 which dehydrogenates a wide range of substituted cyclohexanones and 2-cyclohexenones to their corresponding phenols with high isolated yields, with H2 as the only byproduct. The reaction requires no oxidants or hydrogen acceptors because instead of removing the generated hydrogen with oxidants or hydrogen acceptors, we demonstrated it can be used as a cocatalyst to help power the reaction. This method for phenol synthesis manifests a high atom economy, and is inherently devoid of the complications normally associated with oxidative dehydrogenations.

Abstract:Transfer hydrogenation using liquid hydrogen carriers as the direct proton sources under mild conditions has received extensive attention in the research area of organic synthesis. The emerging photocatalytic water-donating transfer hydrogenation (PWDTH) is a promising alternative over the conventional hydrogenation technology due to the advantages of being eco-friendly. This paper focuses on the recent advances in the rising and rapidly developing field of PWDTH reactions, devoted to elucidating the mechanism of the hydrogen transfer process and rationalizing the design principles of efficient photocatalysts. Finally, the current challenges and future opportunities are described.
Photoreductive BiOCl Ultrathin Nanosheets for Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Color Switching.

Abstract:The reversible photocatalytic color switching systems (PCSSs) driven by semiconductor nanoparticles have attracted considerable attention because of their wide applications. However, the developed semiconductor nanoparticles with photoreductive activity are mainly limited to TiO2-based photocatalysts, which greatly hinder their broad applications. Here we report a cocapping ligand-assisted strategy for the development of photoreductive BiOCl ultrathin nanosheets with abundant oxygen vacancies. Both the cocapping ligands and oxygen vacancies in BiOCl ultrathin nanosheets act as sacrificial electron donors to efficiently scavenge the photogenerated holes, endowing the BiOCl ultrathin nanosheets high photoreductive activity and thus enabling the photocatalytic color switching of redox dyes, such as methylene blue (MB) and neutral red. By successfully integrating the BiOCl ultrathin nanosheet/MB/H2O color switching system with poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel to fabricate a twistable gel film and simultaneously solving the dye-leaching issue of the gel film in a water environment, we further demonstrate its application in a colorimetric oxygen indicator for food packaging, exhibiting high sensitivity to monitor oxygen leakage by the naked eye. We believe the work opens a new avenue for designing photoreductive semiconductor nanomaterials to enrich the PCSSs and their applications.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons under mild conditions is a meaningful and challenging process. N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) combining with tert‑butyl nitrite (TBN) as the promoter was used in 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) to efficiently catalyzed the oxidation of fluorene to fluorenone. At room temperature, both conversion of fluorene and selectivity of fluorenone reached 96%. The presence of TBN facilitated the dissolution of NHPI in the weakly polar solvent of DCE, and then the active phthalimide N-oxyl radical (PINO) was efficiently generated under the synergistic action of TBN and DCE. With the present NHPI/TBN system, the efficient oxidation of a series of hydrocarbons under mild conditions was also realized.

Abstract:Hydrogenated black TiO2 is receiving ever-increasing attention, primarily due to its ability to capture low-energy photons in the solar spectrum and its highly efficient redox reactivity for solar-driven water splitting. However, in-depth physical insight into the redox reactivity is still missing. In this work, we conducted a density functional theory study with Hubbard U correction (DFT+U) based on the model obtained from spectroscopic and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM) characterizations to reveal the synergy among H heteroatoms located at different surface sites where the six-coordinated Ti (Ti6C) atom is converted from an inert trapping site to a site for the interchange of photoexcited electrons. This in-depth understanding may be applicable to the rational design of highly efficient solar-light-harvesting catalysts.
Subsurface Ru-Triggered Hydrogenation Capability of TiO 2– x Overlayer for Poison-Resistant Reduction of N -Heteroarenes

Abstract:Transition-metal-based catalysts are applied widely in the hydrogenation reaction of different organic compounds. However, serious deactivation occurs when the substrate contains strong coordinating functional groups or impurities. In this paper, we reported that a TiO2–x overlayer that formed over Ru NPs (Ru@TiO2–x /TiO2) under reduction conditions worked as a chemoselective, durable, and sulfur-resistant catalyst for the partial hydrogenation of quinoline and other N-heteroarenes. Mechanistic studies revealed that the inhibition of quinoline and its reduced product on the H2 activation over the Ru NPs was eliminated on the active nonmetal overlayer of Ru@TiO2–x . The oxygen vacancies of the Ru@TiO2–x overlayer were determined to be the active sites for H2 activation. The synergy between the TiO2–Ov (TiO2–x ) active sites with the subsurface Ru particles effectively reduced the barriers of H2 dissociation and H addition steps, enabling the nonmetal TiO2–Ov shell to catalyze the hydrogenation reaction at mild conditions with remarkable stability and poisoning resistance.
