Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising technology for combining CO2 reutilization and renewable electricity storage. For economic feasibility, better catalysts are required to overcome current limitations such as high overpotentials, poor faradaic efficiencies (FEs), and low current densities. Herein, size‐ and composition‐controlled gold (Au)–palladium (Pd) bimetallic alloy nanoparticles prepared by a metal vapor synthesis technique together with the monometallic Au and Pd equivalent materials are investigated. X‐ray diffraction and high‐angle annular dark‐field scanning transmission electron microscopy energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy analyses confirm the Au–Pd alloy formation with an average atomic ratio of 76 Pd wt% and 24 Au wt%. These bimetallic and the monometallic catalysts are characterized and tested for the electroreduction of CO2 in electrochemical cells and also in a complete CO2 electrolysis cell. Analysis of the reduction products shows a 100% CO2RR selectivity for CO. The FE for CO with respect to H2 as high as 90% is obtained with Au–Pd/C by tuning the electrode structure. The Au/C and Pd/C catalysts also show a better selectivity for CO with no evidence of other CO2RR products. The Au–Pd alloy formation improves the FE of Pd for CO by suppressing the parasitic H2 evolution reaction.

Abstract:ConspectusElectrocatalytic reduction of CO2 is a desirable method to produce valuable products from CO2. One of the main research challenges for electrocatalysis that produces carbon-containing products from CO2 is avoiding unwanted hydrogen production. Instead of totally eliminating hydrogen, our approach makes use of the readily available protons in aqueous electrolyte to coproduce CO and H2, making synthesis gas (syngas) with a tunable CO:H2 ratio; the resulting syngas can then be used as feedstock for existing thermocatalytic processes such as Fischer-Tropsch and methanol synthesis reactions. We discovered that palladium hydride (PdH), formed under electrocatalytic reaction conditions, is an effective electrocatalyst that enables this unique product distribution. We employed in situ synchrotron techniques to determine the formation of the PdH phase during electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. We also performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to determine the binding energies of key intermediates on PdH to identify descriptors to correlate experimentally observed trends in activity and selectivity.Since first reporting on the potential application of PdH to produce syngas, our research group has refined control over the syngas product selectivity, improved the activity, and reduced the loading of Pd in electrocatalysts. We achieved this by the following approaches: understanding the structure-function relationship with shape-controlled Pd nanoparticles, determining the cation and isotopic effects of electrolyte, alloying Pd with inexpensive secondary metals, supporting Pd on transition metal carbides and nitrides, and utilizing single atom Pd catalysts. At each step, we monitored the phase transition from Pd to PdH under reaction conditions with in situ synchrotron-based X-ray absorption and X-ray diffraction techniques by identifying the onset potential for the appearance of the characteristic Pd-Pd bond length and diffraction patterns associated with PdH formation. We also identified descriptors for syngas production on PdH, bimetallic PdH, and supported PdH catalysts by correlating DFT calculations of PdH stability in different catalytic systems as well as the effect of PdH formation on the binding strength of reaction intermediates. The research methodology established here is useful not only for continued optimization of Pd-based syngas-producing electrocatalysts but also for enhancing activity while reducing the loading of precious metals for other electrocatalytic applications. Moreover, we feel the advances in electrocatalytic syngas production described here represent a critical step toward sustainable CO2 utilization that should inspire continued efforts.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) offers a promising pathway to convert CO 2 into value-added chemicals, with CO production being a primary target. While the conversion of CO 2 to CO hinges on the delicate balance of *COOH and *CO binding energies, this study introduces a series of Pd-based hybrid catalysts, Me 10 CB[5]–M/Pd (M = Sr, Ca, and Cd), to address this challenge. The catalysts were synthesized via thermal treatment of supramolecular precursors formed by Me 10 CB[5], M 2+ , and [PdCl 4 ] 2− ions. Notably, Me 10 CB[5]–Sr/Pd exhibited exceptional CO selectivity (91.3% FE CO at −0.7 V vs. RHE) and long-term stability. The incorporation of Me 10 CB[5]–Sr into the Pd catalyst system enhanced CO 2 adsorption, modulated the electronic structure of Pd, and optimized the adsorption/desorption energies of critical intermediates, ultimately leading to superior CO 2 RR performance. This work underscores the potential of supramolecular engineering in designing high-performance electrocatalysts for CO 2 conversion.

Abstract:The electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added chemicals is regarded as one of the promising routes to mitigate CO2 emission. A nitrogen-doped carbon-supported palladium (Pd) single-atom catalyst that can catalyze CO2 into CO with far higher mass activity than its Pd nanoparticle counterpart, for example, 373.0 and 28.5 mA mg(Pd)(-1), respectively, at -0.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, is reported. A combination of in situ X-ray characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the Pd-N-4 site is the most likely active center for CO production without the formation of palladium hydride (PdH), which is essential for typical Pd nanoparticle catalysts. Furthermore, the well-dispersed Pd-N-4 single-atom site facilitates the stabilization of the adsorbed CO2 intermediate, thereby enhancing electrocatalytic CO2 reduction capability at low overpotentials. This work provides important insights into the structure-activity relationship for single-atom based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) to multi-electron (> 2e-) products provides a green and sustainable route for producing fuels and chemicals. Introducing the second metal element is a feasible strategy for "managing" the key intermediate on Cu-based materials to further improve the CO2RR catalytic performance. In this work, palladium, which promises the generation of CO, was introduced into the poly(ionic liquid)-based copper hybrid (Cu@PIL) to construct a novel Cu-Pd bimetallic electrocatalyst (Cu@PIL@Pd). Remarkably, with a small dosage of palladium (2.0 mol% compared with Cu), a high faradaic efficiency (FE) for C2+ products (68.7%) was achieved at -1.01 V (with respect to the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), the same below) with a high partial current density of 178.3 mA cm-2. Meanwhile, high selectivity towards CH4 (FE = 42.5%) and corresponding partial current density of 172.8 mA cm-2 were obtained on the same catalyst at -1.24 V, signifying a significant potential-dependent selectivity. Mechanistic studies reveal that both copper and palladium oxides are reduced to metallic states during the CO2RR. The presence of the adjoint copper phase and the highly dispersed electrostatic layer promote the generation of CO on the palladium components (both the PdO2 phase and the Pd(II) site). Besides, the local CO* was enriched by the significant diffusion resistance of CO in the PIL layer. The spillover of CO* from Pd sites to the adjoint Cu sites, accompanied by the increased local concentration of CO* around Cu sites, accounted for the observed good CO2RR catalytic performance, especially the high C2+ product selectivity.
Porous Palladium Nanomeshes with Enhanced Electrochemical CO2-into-Syngas Conversion over a Wider Applied Potential

Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of CO2 into syngas, which can be used directly in the classical petroleum industrial processes, provides a powerful approach for achieving the recycling of anthropogenic carbon. Pd has previously been reported to be capable of converting CO2 into syngas with various CO/H-2 ratios, but only at limited applied potential, which is mainly attributed to fewer active sites exposed toward electrocatalysis. Herein, high-performance Pd nanomeshes (NMs) assembled with branch-like Pd nanoparticles were designed and synthesized by using a simple interface-induced self-assembly strategy; these NMs could catalyze CO2-into-syngas conversion with a high current density in a wide applied potential range from -0.5 to -1.0 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode). Further evidence validated that the enhanced activity of the Pd NMs was not only caused by the crosslinked network structure accelerating electron transport, but also by the greater number of edge and/or corner active sites exposed on the surface of the NMs, which facilitated CO2 adsorption, CO2.- formation, COOH* stabilization, and CO generation. Under optimal operating conditions, Pd NMs could balance two competing reactions: CO2 reduction and hydrogen evolution. The resultant syngases with the ideal and tunable CO/H-2 ratio between 0.5:1 and 1:1 could be used directly for methanol synthesis and Fischer-Tropsch reactions.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to syngas represents a promising solution to mitigate CO2 emissions and manufacture value‐added chemicals. Palladium (Pd) has been identified as a potential candidate for syngas production via CO2RR due to its transformation to Pd hydride under CO2RR conditions, however, the pre‐hydridized effect on the catalytic properties of Pd‐based electrocatalysts has not been investigated. Herein, pre‐hydridized Pd nanocubes (PdH0.40) supported on carbon black (PdH0.40 NCs/C) are directly prepared from a chemical reduction method. Compared with Pd nanocubes (Pd NCs/C), PdH0.40 NCs/C presented an enhanced CO2RR performance due to its less cathodic phase transformation revealed by the in situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations revealed different binding energies of key reaction intermediates on PdH0.40 NCs/C and Pd NCs/C. Study of the size effect further suggests that NCs of smaller sizes show higher activity due to their more abundant active sites (edge and corner sites) for CO2RR. The pre‐hydridization and reduced NC size together lead to significantly improved activity and selectivity of CO2RR.

Fabricating penta-coordinated Fe single atom for electrochemical CO2 reduction to syngas

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) has recently attract ed increasing attention for converting intermittent electric energy to chemical energy and reducing CO2 emission. Generally, various products including C1 and C2+ chemicals can be produced through CO2RR, and the selectivities of products are strongly determined by the structures of active sites. In this work, we demonstrate the penta-coordinated Fe single atom with N (Fe−N5/C) can serve as an efficient catalyst for CO2RR to syngas with tunable compositions. Detailed characterizations reveal that Fe atoms present as single state on N-doped carbon support derived from the thermal treatment of zeolitic tetrazolate framework (ZTF). Specifically, each Fe single atom coordinates with five N atoms to form a pentahedral structure (Fe−N5). Theoretical calculations indicate that CO* desorption is energetically preferred, while CO2 activation to COOH* is the potential-limiting step for CO2RR on Fe−N5/C surface, leading to the enhancement on CO2RR and suppression on hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Consequently, the ratio of H2/CO ranges from 0.15 to 2.8 in the potential range of −0.5 ~ −1.0 V when Fe−N5/C was used as catalyst for CO2RR in 0.1 M KHCO3. This work reports a penta-coordinated Fe single atom for CO2RR to produce syngas with tunable H2/CO ratio, which may promote the fundamental research on the catalyst design for CO2RR.

Abstract:Direct electrochemical conversion of CO2 to C2H4 is a promising technology for high-value chemical synthesis. However, challenges arise from competing hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and the formation of undesired C1 products. In this study, we successfully engineered palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) with hydrogen storage capabilities on the Cu2O interface. This strategic modification effectively controls hydrogen states at the interface, leading to simultaneous HER inhibition and a significant increase in C2H4 selectivity. Detailed insights into the reaction mechanism were obtained through in-situ infrared spectroscopy, in-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and controlled experiments, offering a molecular-level understanding of the reaction mechanism. The interface-modified Pd NPs provided stable *H intermediates during the reaction process, effectively suppressing HER. Furthermore, the direct bonding between Pd and Cu interfaces increases charge density at the copper sites. These copper sites, in conjunction with the Pd-H sites, activate *CO at the Pd-Cu interface, forming stable *CHO intermediates. This enhances the coupling of *CHO and *CO intermediates, resulting in a remarkable increase in the C2H4/H2 production rate from 0.4 to 2.0 after Pd NPs modification, with a high faradaic efficiency of up to 46%. Our work presents a promising approach for designing copper-based CO2 reduction catalysts with outstanding activity and selectivity.

Abstract:Selective and efficient conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to a reusable form of carbon via the electrochemical reduction of CO2 has attracted much attention recently, as it is a promising approach for the storage of renewable energy. Herein, we synthesize palladium-copper bimetallic nanoparticles with different compositions, which serve as a well-defined platform to understand their fundamental catalytic activity in CO2 reduction. Among PdCu/C and Pd/C catalysts tested, Pd85Cu15/C catalyst shows the highest CO Faradaic efficiency of 86%, CO current density of 6.9 mA cm−2 and mass activity for CO production of 24.5 A g−1 at −0.89 V vs. RHE in CO2-saturated 0.1 M KHCO3 solution, which is about 5 times, 8 times and 2.2 times higher than Pd/C catalyst, respectively. It was suggested from EXAFS and CO TPD-MS studies that the highly selective CO production on Pd85Cu15/C catalyst is due to the presence of an optimum ratio of the copper element and low-coordination sites over monometallic Pd active for H2 evolution with low overpotential. We believe that controllable size and composition for the bimetallic nanoparticles are critical to the CO2 reduction activity enhancement and high CO Faradaic efficiency. The insights gained through this work may shed light in a foundation for designing efficient catalysts for electrochemical reduction of CO2.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic conversion from carbon dioxide with main products of carbon monoxide and hydrogen provides an economic and sustainable pathway to produce syngas, while the involved electrocatalysts with high activity and stability as well as highly tunability for CO/H2 ratio are still rare. Here, we report a facile method to prepare palladium (Pd) nanoparticle ensembles with unique three-dimentional (3D) architecture and porosity as well as plenty of grain boundaries, which are electrocatalytically active for electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (eCO2RR) to syngas. At the potential of − 0.8 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode), the CO selectivity of such Pd nanoparticle ensembles is up to ca. 90% and the CO/H2 ratio can be adjusted from one to six by varying the applied potentials. The syngas production on Pd nanoparticle ensembles can be further regulated by changing the reaction temperature and modified ligands. This method for fabricating Pd nanoparticle ensembles with rational tenability paves the way for the fundamental research and commercial deployment of eCO2RR and syngas production.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), with water as a hydrogen source, has been attracting great attention due to its promising applications for carbon recycle utilization and renewable electricity storage. In order to drive the process economically, highly efficient catalysts are urgently needed to overcome the constraints of high overpotential, low Faradaic efficiency, and current density of CO2RR. This Perspective summarizes the performance of Pd-containing nanostructures toward CO2RR and related reaction mechanisms. The product selectivity of the Pd catalysts strongly depends on the structure and composition, and the dynamic evolution of active phases induced by the applied potential and reaction intermediate of CO2RR. Pd-SnO2 interface enables synthesis of syngas with controllable H2/CO ratios by electrocatalytic reduction of CO2

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR) to syngas (CO + H2) is considered as a great potential and efficient way to abate carbon emissions and mitigate the depletion of fossil resources. Herein, a series of Pd-loaded SnO2 nanosheets catalysts (Pd-SnO2 NSs) are developed by photodeposition of Pd on the surface of SnO2 nanosheets. Due to the formation of the active Pd-SnO2 interface, the as-prepared Pd-SnO2 catalysts exhibit a suppressed eCO2RR to HCOOH pathway, thus realizing the faradaic efficiency of syngas close to 100%. The obtained optimal 4.3Pd-SnO2 catalyst exhibits high CO selectivity (78% FE CO) and wide H2/CO ratio ranged from 4.2 to 0.28. Notably, the H2/CO ratio can be controlled easily by adjusting the applied potential. Moreover, the H2/CO ratio can maintain for more than 30 h. This work unfolds a promising candidate for earth-abundant Sn-based electrocatalysts for eCO2RR to syngas.

Abstract:Active-phase engineering is regularly utilized to tune the selectivity of metal nanoparticles (NPs) in heterogeneous catalysis. However, the lack of understanding of the active phase in electrocatalysis has hampered the development of efficient catalysts for CO 2 electroreduction. Herein, we report the systematic engineering of active phases of Pd NPs, which are exploited to select reaction pathways for CO 2 electroreduction. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in situ attenuated total reflection-infrared spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations suggest that the formation of a hydrogen-adsorbed Pd surface on a mixture of the α- and β-phases of a palladium-hydride core (α+β PdH x @PdH x ) above −0.2 V (vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode) facilitates formate production via the HCOO* intermediate, whereas the formation of a metallic Pd surface on the β-phase Pd hydride core (β PdH x @Pd) below −0.5 V promotes CO production via the COOH* intermediate. The main product, which is either formate or CO, can be selectively produced with high Faradaic efficiencies (>90%) and mass activities in the potential window of 0.05 to −0.9 V with scalable application demonstration.

Abstract:Electrochemical energy storage and conversion toward sustainable carbon neutrality cycle is of great interest in today's society. In this perspective, we highlight the interconversion between carbon dioxide and formic acid by means of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) as an effective way to achieve that goal. In line with the distinctive catalytic nature of Pd to reversibly drive both FAOR and CO2RR, we first illustrate the intimate mechanistic relation between these two reversed reactions over Pd surfaces. Next, recent advances in developing Pd-based bifunctional catalysts and relevant optimization strategies are briefly summarized, including geometric structure engineering with preferential facet exposure, construction of crystallographic ordering intermetallic, electronic structure manipulation through metal or metalloid doping to fine tune the binding strength for active and poisoning intermediates. At the end, our viewpoints on the design principles at both microscopic and macroscopic scales are offered toward an efficient CO2 and HCOOH interconversion loop.
