Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable zinc-iodine batteries are emerging high-safety and cost-effective technology for large-scale energy storage. However, the high solubility of discharge species polyiodide in aqueous electrolyte is the major challenge for iodine cathode. Herein, the polyiodide doped conductive polymer cathode is proposed to suppress the dissolution of active materials in electrolyte. Abstract:Introduction Flow battery is one of the most promising technologies for storing electricity generation from intermittent renewables, owing to its design flexibility in decoupling energy and power1-3. Developing high-energy-density flow batteries can reduce the system footprint and storage size and expand their usage to both stationary and transportation applications1-3. Iodide has been identified as one of the most promising redox active species for redox flow battery owing to its high solubility in both aqueous4,5 and nonaqueous media6, fast kinetics4,7 and high reversibility.4,7 However, only 2/3 of the iodide ions contribute to useable capacity and 1/3 of the iodide ions are used as the complexing agent to stabilize the free iodine in most iodide-based battery systems. In this work, we exploit bromide ions (Br–) as the complexing agent to stabilize the free iodine, forming iodine-bromide ions (I2Br–) as a mean to free up iodide ions for charge storage (as shown in Figure 1).8 With this strategy, we here demonstrated a novel zinc/iodine-bromide (I2Br–) battery (ZIBB) with an energy density of 101 Wh L-1 posolyte+negolyte (or 202 Wh L-1 posolyte), which is the highest energy density achieved experimentally for aqueous flow batteries to date. This strategy can be further generalized to nonaqueous iodide-based batteries (e.g. lithium/polyiodide battery), offering new opportunities to improve high-energy iodide-based energy storage technologies.8 Results and Discussion The proposed zinc/iodine-bromide redox flow battery (ZIBB) consists of a positive electrode of graphite felt (GF) operating in a mixed solution of ZnI2 and ZnBr2, Nafion membranes and a GF negative electrode in zinc polyhalide aqueous solution.8 The designed reactions of the ZIBB is shown in equations (1) to (3), with an theoretical cell voltage similar to that of zinc/iodide redox battery (ZIB) c.a. 1.3 V 4. During charge, I2Br– ions will be generated in the posolyte while the Zn2+ ions are reduced to form zinc metal on the negative electrode. Such process is accompanied by the movement of the Zn2+ions from the posolyte to negolyte serving as the charge carrier. During discharge, the reverse reactions occur. +ve: 2I- + Br- I2Br- + 2e- Eo= 0.594 VSHE(1) -ve: Zn2+ + 2e- Zn Eo= -0.76 VSHE(2) Overall: 2I- + Br- + Zn2+ I2Br- + Zn Vcell= 1.354 V (3) Figure 1 compares the galvanostatic voltage profiles of a ZIBB (5.0 M ZnI2 : 2.5 M ZnBr2), and an iodide-only system (5.0 M ZnI2) under the continuous flow mode. A bromide-only (2.5 M ZnBr2) system with two cut off voltages (1.5 V, red curve) and (2.0 V pink curve) are also included for comparison. With the same cut-off voltages, the cell with Br– (ZIBB) achieves higher charge and discharge capacity compared with the iodide-only cell (ZIB). In addition, two control bromide-only cells directly demonstrate that the additional capacity observed in the ZIBB cell (cut at 1.5 V) is not originated from the oxidation of Br– to Br3 –. The origin of the additional capacity and, the influences of the key factors (e.g. electrolyte concentration, applied current density and membrane thickness etc.) on the electrochemical behavior/performance will be discussed in details. Abstract:Aqueous Zn-I2 batteries show broad prospects for grid-scale energy storage, but face limited capacity and low voltage plateau due to the single conversion of I2/I− coupled with serious dissolution of polyiodide in the electrolyte. Here we report a novel triple I+ storage, started by organic iodine electrolyte for the first time, in In-based metal–organic frameworks (In-MOFs) cathode for high-capacity Zn-I2 batteries. In this electrolyte–electrode cooperation, 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium iodide (MPII) contained Zn(SO3CF3)2 electrolyte interacts with SO3CF3− to yield I+ for 4 e− I−/I2/I+ conversion. Meanwhile, In-MOFs coordinate with I+ by –C=O and C–OH groups, and alloy with Zn2+ by In centers, to further boost the battery capacity. Such multi-synergy merits deliver an ultrahigh capacity of 481 mAh/g (based on the total mass of In-MOFs from the cathode and I+ ions from the electrolyte) at 1.0 A/g for aqueous Zn-I2 batteries. This study points to a new paradigm for electrolyte–electrode synergistic iodine storage to significantly enhance the capacity of Zn-I2 batteries toward practical applications.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn-I flow batteries utilizing low-cost porous membranes are promising candidates for high-power-density large-scale energy storage. However, capacity loss and low Coulombic efficiency resulting from polyiodide cross-over hinder the grid-level battery performance. Here, we develop colloidal chemistry for iodine-starch catholytes, endowing enlarged-sized active materials by strong chemisorption-induced colloidal aggregation. The size-sieving effect effectively suppresses polyiodide cross-over, enabling the utilization of porous membranes with high ionic conductivity. The developed flow battery achieves a high-power density of 42 mW cm-2 at 37.5 mA cm-2 with a Coulombic efficiency of over 98% and prolonged cycling for 200 cycles at 32.4 Ah L-1posolyte (50% state of charge), even at 50 °C. Furthermore, the scaled-up flow battery module integrating with photovoltaic packs demonstrates practical renewable energy storage capabilities. Cost analysis reveals a 14.3 times reduction in the installed cost due to the applicability of cheap porous membranes, indicating its potential competitiveness for grid energy storage.

Abstract:Enhancing the energy density is an imperative challenge in the advancement of aqueous zinc-iodine (Zn-I 2 ) batteries, which hold great promise for grid energy storage systems. Achieving the reversible conversion reaction of high-valence iodine species, particularly I+/I0 redox chemistry, offers a substantial potential for improved energy density. In this study, we introduce a novel method of employing electron-outflowing heterostructured hosts to stabilize I+ ions in aqueous halide-free ZnSO 4 electrolytes. Both experimental analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the stabilization of thermodynamically unstable I+ cations originates from the charge transfer interaction between I+ ions and copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) within the hosts. The electron-outflowing effect resulting from the π-π conjugation between CuPc and the carbon framework in heterostructured hosts further intensifies the charge transfer interaction, leading to the reversible I+/I5− conversion reaction in Zn-I 2 batteries. Consequently, this emerging redox reaction, validated by in-situ Raman and ex-situ ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, introduces another voltage plateau at ∼1.6 V and enhances the energy density to 233.8 Wh kg –1 at 3.0 A g –1 . This work showcases outstanding electrochemical performance for the Zn-I 2 battery, providing valuable insights into advancing iodine redox chemistry featuring multiple electrons.

Abstract:The zinc-iodine flow batteries are promising candidates for large-scale electrochemical energy storage with its high energy density, safety, and low-cost features. However, the limited utilization of iodine species by liberating I- for stabilizing I2 and severe anodic dendrite growth are still seriously challenging the real battery performance and lock its commercialization potentials. Herein, we report a unique ternary hydrated eutectic electrolyte based on zinc bromide and acetamide to manipulate the solvent structure and realize the favorable interface engineering at both electrodes simultaneously. Specifically, solvating Br- in the sheath with Zn2+ facilitate the formation of strong halogen bond that could stabilize the elemental iodine effectively, and then enhance the I-/I2Br- conversion kinetics and reversibility with the iodine reutilization efficiency reach to almost 100%. Simultaneously, such bifunctional hydrated eutectic electrolyte also could greatly minimize the hydrogen evolution side reactions and direct uniform electrodeposition to suppress the anodic dendrite growth. As expected, the electrochemical performance of the designed flow cell is remarkably enhanced, delivering a specific capacity and energy density of 200 Ah Lcatholyte-1 and 283 Wh Lcatholyte-1 at 20 mA cm-2, and maintaining a high energy efficiency of 83% even after 1200 hours of extended operation.

Effective Enhancement of Energy Density of Zinc-Polyiodide Flow Batteries by Organic/Penta-iodide Complexation

Abstract:Based on the ambipolar characteristics and high solubility of ZnI2, zinc-polyiodide flow batteries (ZIFB) have attracted attention as high-energy density flow batteries. However, due to the various oxidation products of iodide (I-) and the formation of iodine (I2) solid precipitates at the positive electrode, the limiting state-of-charge (SoC) of ZIFB has not been clearly defined. Herein, a clear definition of SoC in ZIFBs is given based on the thermodynamic relationship among I-(aq), I3-(aq), I5-(aq), and I2(aq) in the electrolyte. Conventional ZIFBs are limited by their maximum attainable SoC of 87%, at which the fully charged catholyte includes I-, I3-, and I5- ions at molar ratios of 49.6, 32.2, and 18.1%, respectively. Furthermore, two effective strategies to extend the maximum SoC are suggested: (1) increasing the formation constant (Keq) of I3- can raise the availability of I- for electrooxidation by suppressing I2 precipitation, and (2) promoting the production of higher-order polyiodides such as I5- can increase the oxidation state of the charged electrolyte. The addition of 5 vol % triethylene glycol (tri-EG) to the electrolyte increased Keq from 710 to 1123 L mol-1; this increase was confirmed spectrophotometrically. Tri-EG stabilized I5- ions in the form of the I5-/tri-EG complex, thereby converting the main oxidation product from I3- to I5-. The preferred electrochemical production of I5- in the tri-EG electrolyte was observed by electrochemical and computational analyses. As a result, the maximum attainable SoC was enhanced remarkably to 116%, yielding molar ratios of I-, I3-, and I5- ions of 9.1, 11.2, and 79.7%, respectively. This SoC extension effect was confirmed in the ZIFB flow cell with stable charge-discharge cycling at the SoC 120% limit, demonstrating the highest energy density, 249.9 Wh L-1, among all reported ZIFBs.

Abstract:The high performance of aqueous zinc–iodine batteries is limited by the soluble polyiodide shuttling and sluggish redox kinetics. Various strategies have been proposed to address these issues, but most of these optimizing strategies either add additional hurdles to the manufacturing process or require materials that are not currently commercially available. Herein, we take advantage of commercial 1,2-dimethyl-3-propylimidazolium iodide to serve as a redox reaction catalyst for the activation of iodine cathodes without any other material modification. Due to the strong bonding coordination between 1,2-dimethyl-3-propylimidazolium iodide and the polyiodides, the as-prepared cell has a high specific capacity (147 mA h g −1 ) at 50C, and ultralong cycling performance (20 000 cycles) with better capacity retention. This work introduces an effective and commercial material that enables bringing aqueous rechargeable zinc iodine batteries to the practical energy market.

Abstract:The technology of Redox Flow Batteries is an important option to store energy from the operating irregularly renewable energy sources. The perspectives concern stationary energy storage, including grid-scale energy storage, thanks to their high power performance, flexible design, and ease of scaling-up. The flow-based electrochemical energy storage systems utilize the appropriate electroactive species dissolved in externally flowing electrolytes which are ready to accumulate all (or part) of the charge. Among important issues is the search for highly efficient (i.e., capable of fast electron transfers) electroactive systems that would yield high power and energy densities during the systems’ operation. Highly concentrated iodine/iodide system can act as redox conducting electrolyte. Furthermore its charge mediating capabilities has been recognized in the Dye Sensitized Solar Cell technology due to the feasibilioty of fast charge propagation accompanied by efficient electron self-exchange or diffusional-type electron hopping. In the present work, we concentrate on utilization of highly concentrated iodine/iodide redox systems and their possibility to exhibit high rates of charge propagation. In practical terms, it can be combined with ZnI 2, or other zinc salt, containing electrolyte. Reactions in the zinc/iodine (polyiodide) redox flow battery are as follows: Zn → Zn 2+ + 2e - (E = −0.76 V vs SHE) at the negative electrode (anode), and 3I - → I 3 − + 2e − (E = 0.54 V vs SHE) at the positive electrode (cathode) thus yielding a total theoretical potential output as high as ∼1.3 V. The increase of current density could be achieved not only by reducing the viscosity of the electrolyte, thus accelerating charge-carrier transport, but also – by referencing to my experience with the iodine/iodide couple as charge relay for dye-sensitized solar cells – through improvement of the dynamics of charge propagation in highly concentrated iodine/iodide solution via the catalyzed enhancement of rates of electron self-exchange (hopping) between iodine/iodide (polyiodide) redox species as well as by accelerating the interfacial kinetics at electrodes. This can be realized by choosing appropriate electrode materials and through their activation or modification. The electrochemical activities of the redox couples are usually significantly increased through application of nanostructured functionalized carbons. While dispersed in solutions they can improve electron transfers to the redox sites. The proposed chemistry has been first tested using the microelectrode methodology to determine mass-transport (effectively diffusional) coefficients for charge propagation, heterogeneous and homogeneous (electron self-exchange) rates of electron transfers. Unless catalyzed, both interfacial and bulk (self-exchange) electron transfers involving the iodine/iodide redox system are somewhat complicated; there is a need to break the I-I bond in the I 3 - or I 2 molecule; it has also been well-established that platinum (e.g. when deposited on the counter electrode) induces electron transfers within the iodine/iodide redox system [1]. In the presentation, we are going to explore the respective interfacial (electrocatalytic) phenomena on nanostructured metal oxides (e.g. zirconia), in addition to traces of expensive platinum or palladium nanoparticles (provided that catalytic centers are three-dimensionally distributed in the electrolyte phase), and we will utilize them to enhance iodine/iodide electron transfers to develop a new generation of redox mediators or ultra-fast components of redox electrolytes. Abstract:The aqueous zinc-iodine batteries (ZIBs) have been expected to be the most promising next-generation energy storage device. However, it is still struggling with the limited intrinsic electronic conductivity, poor thermal stability and high solubility of the discharge products. Additionally, the iodine loading is below 2 mg cm −2 in most of the reported aqueous ZIBs, impeding their widespread application. Herein, we present a one-step production method for O-doped hierarchical porous carbon framework (OHPCF) from biomass as an iodine host material to solve the problems mentioned above. Benefiting from synergistic physical confinement (high-density microporous structure) and chemical anchoring (abundant oxygen atom doping) effect of the OHPCF samples, the electrode exhibits low polarization, high iodine utilization and excellent electrochemical stability in ZIBs. Encouragingly, we achieve an ultra-high area capacity of 3.3 mAh cm −2 with a loading of 20.3 mg cm −2 , demonstrating its superior application potential. This work introduces a simple yet effective strategy for developing 3D microporous electrodes for ZIBs with high iodine loading, enabling high areal capacity with remarkable rate and cycling performance.

Abstract:A novel water‐in‐deep eutectic solvent electrolyte uses ethylene glycol as a co‐solvent to transform water‐rich clusters into water‐poor clusters, enabling the cathode to achieve the two‐electron conversion of I+/I0/I– and the conversion of Cl0/Cl–. The aqueous Zn‐I2 cell achieves an exceptional capacity and energy density with high Coulombic efficiency. Aqueous zinc‐iodine (Zn‐I2) batteries are promising energy storage devices; however, the conventional single‐electron reaction potential and energy density of iodine cathode are inadequate for practical applications. Activation of high‐valence iodine cathode reactions has evoked a compelling direction to developing high‐voltage zinc‐iodine batteries. Herein, ethylene glycol (EG) is proposed as a co‐solvent in a water‐in‐deep eutectic solvent (WiDES) electrolyte, enabling significant utilization of two‐electron‐transfer I+/I0/I− reactions and facilitating an additional reversibility of Cl0/Cl− redox reaction. Spectroscopic characterizations and calculations analyses reveal that EG integrates into the Zn2+ solvation structure as a hydrogen‐bond donor, competitively binding O atoms in H2O, which triggers a transition from water‐rich to water‐poor clusters of Zn2+, effectively disrupting the H2O hydrogen‐bond network. Consequently, the aqueous Zn‐I2 cell achieves an exceptional capacity of 987 mAh gI2−1 with an energy density of 1278 Wh kgI2−1, marking an enhancement of ≈300 mAh g−1 compared to electrolyte devoid of EG, and enhancing the Coulombic efficiency (CE) from 68.2% to 98.7%. Moreover, the pouch cell exhibits 3.72 mAh cm−2 capacity with an energy density of 4.52 mWh cm−2, exhibiting robust cycling stability. Abstract:Low capacity and poor cycle stability greatly inhibit the development of zinc-iodine batteries. Herein, a high-performance Zn-Iodine battery has been reached by designing and optimizing both electrode and electrolyte. The Br- is introduced as the activator to trigger I+, and coupled with I+ forming interhalogen to stabilize I+ to achieve a four-electron reaction, which greatly promotes the capacity. And the Ni-Fe-I LDH nanoflowers served as the confinement host to enable the reactions of I-/I+ occurring in the layer due to the spacious and stable interlayer spacing of Ni-Fe-I LDH, which effectively suppresses the iodine-species shuttle ensuring high cycling stability. As a result, the electrochemical performance is greatly enhanced, especially in specific capacity (as high as 350 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 far higher than two-electron transfer Zn-Iodine batteries) and cycling performance (94.6% capacity retention after 10000 cycles). This strategy provides a new way to realize high capacity and long-term stability of Zn-Iodine batteries.

Abstract:Abstract The chlorine-based redox reaction (ClRR) could be exploited to produce secondary high-energy aqueous batteries. However, efficient and reversible ClRR is challenging, and it is affected by parasitic reactions such as Cl 2 gas evolution and electrolyte decomposition. Here, to circumvent these issues, we use iodine as positive electrode active material in a battery system comprising a Zn metal negative electrode and a concentrated (e.g., 30 molal) ZnCl 2 aqueous electrolyte solution. During cell discharge, the iodine at the positive electrode interacts with the chloride ions from the electrolyte to enable interhalogen coordinating chemistry and forming ICl 3 - . In this way, the redox-active halogen atoms allow a reversible three-electrons transfer reaction which, at the lab-scale cell level, translates into an initial specific discharge capacity of 612.5 mAh g I2 −1 at 0.5 A g I2 −1 and 25 °C (corresponding to a calculated specific energy of 905 Wh kg I2 −1 ). We also report the assembly and testing of a Zn | |Cl-I pouch cell prototype demonstrating a discharge capacity retention of about 74% after 300 cycles at 200 mA and 25 °C (final discharge capacity of about 92 mAh).

Abstract:Zn-iodine redox flow batteries have emerged as one of the most promising next-generation energy storage systems, due to their high energy density, low cost and superior safety. However, the low I-2 utilization and shuttle effect of iodine species greatly inhibit their practical use. Numerous approaches have been attempted to address these issues and push the energy density and cycling stability toward the practicable level. In this review, we summarize the recently-developed functional strategies including electrode design and electrolyte optimization to improve the adsorption capability and utilization efficiency of the iodine species. Finally, we provide some discussion on the remaining challenges and future perspectives of the Zn-iodine redox flow batteries.
