Abstract:The electronic energy transfer (EET) usually induces the fluorescence self-quenching, but it has been positively used here to tune and/or switch the photoluminescence (PL) of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs). Monodisperse ZnO nanospheres, rods, tripods, and clusters with tunable sizes have been synthesized to reproducibly and finely control the NP aggregation because EET is sensitive to the interparticle separation. The complex reactions between these NPs and their dispersion media have been used to further control the EET for tuning the ZnO PL. By changing the NP concentrations, shapes, and/or the cluster sizes, the band-edge UV PL of the ZnO NPs dispersed in alcohol or water is modified in both intensity and peak position, and new blue emissions with tunable intensity around 418, 435, and 468 nm are induced. As confirmed by the X-ray diffraction patterns and the infrared, PL, absorption, and Raman spectra, the ZnO NPs made here can slowly react with ethanol to form a new composite ZnO(C2H5OH)(n), which changes the EET between NPs and leads to strong blue PL around 435 nm. By simply using different dispersion media (such as ethanol or water) to modify the surface complex compounds of ZnO NPs, the 435 nm blue PL can be turned on or off.

Abstract:Understanding the growth mechanisms of nanomaterials usually leads to the successful preparation of targeted micro-structures with excellent properties. In this paper, flower-like and roughly spherical ZnO nanocrystals have been successfully synthesised through facile wet chemical methods, i.e. hydrothermal pathways and homogeneous precipitation method. The photocatalytic activities of the prepared photocatalysts were evaluated by degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and phenol under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Remarkably, the ZnO powder via homogeneous precipitation (urea/Zn2+ = 2.0) exhibited better photocatalytic performance and photostability than those of flower-like ZnO substrate. The enhanced photocatalytic properties could be attributed to more active catalytic sites and effective separation of carriers, which were confirmed by low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, photocurrent responses, and photoluminescence spectral analysis. A possible mechanism for the excellent photocatalytic activity of ZnO substrates was proposed.
One-step Template-Free Fabrication of Mesoporous ZnO/TiO2 Hollow Microspheres with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Mesoporous ZnO/TiO2 hollow microspheres have been successfully synthesized by a facile one-step hydrothermal route without any template. The effect of reactants, temperature and hydrothermal time on the morphology and photocatalytic degradation activity has been investigated in details. The hollow microspheres with average diameter of 0.5-2 mu m showed time-dependent growth process and consisted of nanoparticles with a diameter of 10-20 nm. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO/TiO2 hollow microspheres was evaluated via the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO). Compared with the pristine TiO2 hollow microspheres or ZnO nanosheets, the ZnO/TiO2 hollow microspheres produced significantly positive effect on the band-gap energy shift (from 3.16 eV (TiO2 ) to 2.80 eV (ZnO/TiO2 )) and photocatalytic degradation (with a high apparent reaction rate of 10.19 10(-2) min(-1)) probably owing to the hybrid hollow microsphere morphology and their synergistic catalytic effect. Abstract:By combing laser direct writing and hydrothermal growth, we demonstrate the growth of three-dimensional flowerlike ZnO nanostructures from aqueous solution. Our approach offers synthetic flexibility in controlling film architecture, coating texture and crystallite size. The wettability is studied by measurement of time-dependent contact angles in the as-grown samples. In addition, superior photocatalytic activity of the flowerlike ZnO nanostructures in the degradation of Rhodamine B is investigated as well. The influence factors and formation mechanism of the flowerlike ZnO nanostructures are also analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles show the great promise in photocatalysis due to their exceptional characteristics. However, achieving precise control over ZnO nanoparticle size, morphology, and agglomeration remains a challenge. We applied the high-speed shearing (HSS) method for synthesizing ZnO with enhanced properties. HSS employs a high-speed rotor to generate intense shear forces, enabling efficient particle size reduction, improved homogeneity, and enlarged surface area. HSS method could provide crushing effect and powerful mixing effect to synthesize smaller ZnO nanoparticles with less agglomeration. ZnO nanoparticles are optimized from 9.69 nm to 7.09 nm for single particle and from 955 nm to 26.5 nm for secondary particle size. Ultraviolet diffuse reflectance spectroscopy has been used to further analyze the in-situ formation reaction. Besides, we investigate the photocatalytic efficiency of ZnO towards methylene blue. ZnO nanoparticles made using HSS have more active sites, improving the photocatalytic degradation from 38.6% to 70.8%.

Abstract:For colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs), shape control and doping as two widely applied strategies are crucial for enhancing and manipulating their functional properties. Here we report a facile and green synthetic approach for high-quality colloidal Mn doped ZnO NCs with simultaneous control over composition, shape and optical properties. Specifically, the shape of doped ZnO NCs can be finely modulated from three dimensional (3D) tetrapods to 0D spherical nanoparticles in a single reaction scheme. The growth mechanism of doped ZnO NCs with interesting shape transition is explored. Furthermore, we demonstrate the tunable optical absorption features of Mn doped ZnO NCs by varying the Mn doping levels, and the enhanced photocatalytic performance of Mn doped ZnO NCs under visible light, which can be further optimized by delicately controlling their shapes and Mn doping concentrations. Our results provide an improved understanding of the growth mechanism of doped NCs during the growth process and can be potentially extended to ZnO NCs doped with other metal ions for various applications.

Abstract:In this paper, 3D flower-like Au-ZnO microstructures with controlled morphology and dimensions were synthesized by a facile one-step aqueous solution route at room temperature, and the photocatalytic properties of these structures were investigated. The as-prepared flower-like Au-ZnO structures with a diameter of about 3 μm consisted of many ZnO nanosheets which interacted with each other. These nanosheets, which were successfully decorated by Au NPs, showed an average thickness of 10 nm and a single-crystalline structure with {2-1-10} planar surfaces. The growth process of Au-ZnO structures and the effects of trisodium citrate on the nucleation and growth of ZnO were investigated. The formation of Au NPs in this experiment was discussed too. The Au-ZnO structures showed higher photocatalytic activity than that of pure ZnO.

Abstract:ZnO 3D hierarchical structures assembled by different low-dimensional building blocks (nanosheet, nanoneedle) have been successfully synthesized at room temperature without the addition of organic agents. The morphology of the hierarchical structures can be well controlled by simply changing the concentration of the reactant. On the basis of the experimental results, a possible mechanism for the formation of the ZnO 3D hierarchical structures is proposed. The room temperature photoluminescence spectra of the ZnO 3D hierarchical structures show that the relative intensity of UV emission increases from nanosheets to the thin needle flowers and can be tuned by controlling the morphology. Importantly, the thin needle flowers sample exhibits an enhanced photocatalytic performance as compared with the other ZnO nanostructures due to structural features and good optical quality.

Abstract:Flower-like ZnO structures with high photocatalytic performance were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. Alkaline environment played a critical role during the morphological transformation. When the molar ratio of Zn(CH3COO)(2)center dot 2H(2)O to NaOH was set as 1:8 in the presence of triethanolamine (TEA), and the molar ratio of Zn2+ to TEA was 1:9, the flower-like ZnO product was produced. The hexagonal sphere-like, oblate-like, and hexagonal biprism-like samples were also obtained by adjusting the molar ratio of Zn2+ to NaOH as 1:2, 1:5 and 1:12 with the presence of invariable amount of TEA, respectively. The prepared ZnO products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area. Photodegradation experiments of the samples were carried out by choosing Methylene Blue (MB) as a model target under UV irradiation with homemade photocatalytic apparatus. Photoluminescent Hierarchical Zno Micro‐flower and Its Surface Wettability

Abstract:The flower‐like ZnO with micro‐nano hierarchical structure is successfully obtained by a simple hydrothermal synthesis, using sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) as a structure direct agent. The resulted ZnO micro‐flowers are very uniform in morphology with particle sizes around 1 µm. A number of techniques, including X‐ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scan electron microscopy (FESEM), energy‐dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), are used to characterize the obtained ZnO. The self‐assemble of ZnO nano‐sheets under the direction of SDBS leads to the formation of ZnO micro‐flowers. The room temperature photoluminescence property of the obtained flower‐like ZnO exhibits a broad visible light emission. The surface of as‐made ZnO shows a very hydrophilic property, while the special micro‐nano hierarchical structure enables the ZnO micro‐flower a superhydrophobic surface after modification of fluoroalkylsilane.

Abstract:Hydrothermal synthetic method has been used to prepare complex [ZnL]n (1) (H2L = 4-[(1H-imidazol-4-yl)methylamino]benzoic acid) as spherical microparticles. Slow morphological changes from small spindle-shaped particles to smoother spherical particles in the growth process of complex 1 were observed. Subsequently complex 1 was used as precursor as well as sacrificial template to synthesize hexagonal ZnO nanomaterials by calcination in air. The structure of the final products and the formation process were characterized by measurements of X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The formation mechanism of the final nanorods was proposed on the basis of the structural change of complex 1 in the calcination process. The photocatalytic properties of complex 1 and prepared ZnO have also been studied, and the results showed that all these nano-/micromaterials have photocatalytic properties and ZnO formed under lower calcinated temperature has higher photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:In this paper, ZnO with a rich variety of well-defined morphologies have been achieved by solution route using different kind of precursors, which can prepare particles by only one step without calcination. The influences of solvent, and temperature on the particle size and morphology of ZnO were investigated. It was revealed by the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images that the morphological feature of ZnO can be controlled as rod-, polyhedron-, fluffy sphere-, snowflake- and flower-like, etc. XRD measurement showed that all of the ZnO samples with different morphologies has the same hexagonal structure, which is well consistent with electron diffraction (ED) characterization. This communication not only provides promising candidates for materials science due to the importance of shape in relationship with materials, but also presents an effective route to synthesize the well-defined inorganic materials.
Rapid synthesis of novel flowerlike ZnO structures by thermolysis of zinc acetate

Abstract:Novel flowerlike ZnO structures have been rapidly synthesized on (100)-Si substrates via thermolysis of zinc acetate in air ambient without any catalyst. The obtained ZnO products exhibit well-defined flowerlike morphologies consisting of multilayer petal crystals with tapering feature. High-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and corresponding selected area electron diffraction pattern (SAED) reveal that these petal crystals are single crystal in nature and preferentially oriented in the c-axis direction. Room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra show that all the samples exhibit prominent UV emissions around 376.8nm and very weak visible emission peaks, which demonstrates that there are few deep-level defects in the single crystal petals of the flowerlike ZnO structures. The growth mechanism of the as-synthesized flowerlike ZnO structures was also discussed.

Abstract:In this study, we report a simple solution-phase method to prepare ZnO nanostructures with controllable morphologies. By using oleylamine (OAm) and dodecanol (DDL) as solvents, zinc oxide nanocrystals with tunable sizes and diverse shapes (hexagonal pyramids, bulletlike, and pencil-like shapes) have been obtained under mild conditions. At the same time, the introduction of presynthesized gold nanocrystals can also lead to the hybrid nanostructures of goldzinc oxide hexagonal nanopyramids. In addition, the possible formation mechanism of the as-prepared ZnO nanostructures has been investigated. Notably, the unique optical properties of the ZnO nanostructures with different sizes and shapes have also been discussed. We hope that this strategy will be a general and effective method for fabricating other metal oxide nanocrystals.

Abstract:A hydrothermal method was utilized to attach 3D flowerlike ZnO microstructures to the surface of activated carbon fiber (ACF). The phase structure, morphology and optical property of the obtained sample were characterized. SEM demonstrated that the flowerlike structures consisted of multilayered petals, which were wholly comprised of ZnO rods. XRD analysis confirmed patterns for the wurtzite hexagonal phase of ZnO and ACF from the sample. The formation mechanism of the flowerlike ZnO grown on ACF was also discussed. The ZnO/ACF composite showed a superior photocatalytic activity in the degradation of methyl orange as compared with pure ZnO. The enhancement was attributed to a red shift, stronger UV light absorption ability and higher absorption behavior in ZnO/ACF, and the capture and transportation of photogenerated electrons by ACF.
Zn3V2O7(OH)2(H2O)2 and Zn3V2O8 Nanostructures: Controlled Fabrication and Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:Floriated like and nanobelt nanostructures ofZn(3)V(2)O(7)(OH)(2)(H2O)(2) were successfully synthesized by a template-free hydrothermal route. The as-prepared floriated nanostructures were composed of 2D nanosheets, which intercrossed with each other through self-assembly. The influence of the hydrothermal temperature on the morphology and photocatalytic activities of products was systematically investigated. Significantly, this is the first time that Zn3V2O7(OH)(2)(H2O)(2) was used as a photocatalyst for organic pollutant degradation under UV light irradiation. Moreover, Zn3V2O8 with porous nanostructures could be formed via calcination of the corresponding Zn3V2O7(OH)(2)(H2O)(2). It was found that the Zn3V2O8 nanostructure still possessed floriated like morphology and the pore sizes within the floriated were about 4 nm. All these characteristics were beneficial for the improvement of photocatalytic activity. The reaction constant (k) of the best quality Zn3V2O8 nanostructure was three times that of the sample prepared by solid-state reaction under visible-light irradiation.
Microfluidics-enabled rational design of ZnO micro-/nanoparticles with enhanced photocatalysis, cytotoxicity, and piezoelectric properties

Abstract:Microfluidics-based reactors enables the controllable synthesis of micro-/nanostructures for a broad spectrum of applications from materials science, bioengineering to medicine. In this study, we first develop a facile and straightforward flow synthesis strategy to control zinc oxide (ZnO) of different shapes (sphere, ellipsoid, short rod, long rod, cube, urchin, and platelet) on a few seconds time scale, based on the 1.5-run spiral-shaped microfluidic reactor with a relative short microchannel length of ca. 92 mm. The formation of ZnO is realized simply by mixing reactants through two inlet flows, one containing zinc nitrate and the other sodium hydroxide. The structures of ZnO are tuned by choosing appropriate flow rates and reactant concentrations of two inlet fluids. The formation mechanism behind microfluidics is proposed. The photocatalysis, cytotoxicity, and piezoelectric capabilities of as-synthesized ZnO from microreactors are further examined, and the structure-dependent efficacy is observed, where higher surface area ZnO structures generally behave better performance. These results bring new insights not only in the rational design of functional micro-/nanoparticles from microfluidics, but also for deeper understanding of the structure-efficacy relationship when translating micro-/nanomaterials into practical applications.

Abstract:Two forms of flower-like ZnO nanostructures were synthesized using hydrothermal methods at various growth times/temperatures and zinc precursors. The morphology, structure, chemical composition, and optical properties of these ZnO nanoflowers were studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), X-ray photoelectrons spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and UV–Vis spectroscopy. The SEM images revealed two forms of flower-like nanostructures, namely lotus- and tulip-like flower ZnO nanostructures. The XPS analysis revealed the oxidation state of the Zn and O elements, as well as the presence of OH groups on the surface of the lotus-like flower ZnO nanostructure. The XRD results revealed less crystallinity of the lotus-like ZnO nanoflowers (NFs) compared with the tulip-like ZnO NFs. The XRD results revealed the presence of Zn (OH)2 in the ZnO NFs. The Raman results confirmed less crystallinity of the lotus-like ZnO NFs. The estimated optical bandgap was 2.92 and 3.0 eV for the tulip- and lotus-like ZnO NFs, respectively. The tulip-like ZnO NFs showed superior photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye, verified via UV–Vis radiation, compared with the lotus-like ZnO NFs, which show the impact of the structure defects and OH- impurities on the photocatalytic performance of ZnO nanoflowers.

Abstract:The flower-like Cu 2 O nanostructures were hydrothermally synthesized without using any template or surfactant. The influences of hydrothermal temperature, reaction time and reactants concentrations on the growth of nanostructures were investigated in detail. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Cu 2 O crystals with different shapes, i.e., flower-like (F-product) cubic box (CB-product) and cubic box with holes in each face (CBH-product), were synthesized by controlling the synthesis parameters and explored for CO catalytic oxidation. It was found that F-product showed higher catalytic than others.
