Abstract:•Both WT and sEH null mice exhibited a similar age-related decline in overall cardiac function.•SEH deletion preserved cardiac function, reduced cell injury and maintained mitochondrial respiration following MI.•Cardioprotective effects of sEH deletion are mediated, in part, through improvement of the mitochondrial bioenergetics.•Cardioprotective response observed in aged sEH null mice was not as robust in young mice, indicating a crucial role of the general pathogenesis of ageing.
