Abstract:The fabrication of carbon nanomaterials usually calls for expensive vacuum systems to generate plasmas1,2 and yields are disappointingly low. Here we describe a simple method for producing high-quality spherical carbon nano-'onions' in large quantities without the use of vacuum equipment. The nanoparticles, which have C60 cores surrounded by onion-like nested particles, are generated by an arc discharge between two graphite electrodes submerged in water. This technique is economical and environmentally benign, and produces uncontaminated nanoparticles which may be useful in many applications.

Abstract:While electrochemical water splitting is one of the most promising methods to store light/electrical energy in chemical bonds, a key challenge remains in the realization of an efficient oxygen evolution reaction catalyst with large surface area, good electrical conductivity, high catalytic properties, and low fabrication cost. Here, a facile solution reduction method is demonstrated for mesoporous Co3O4 nanowires treated with NaBH4. The high‐surface‐area mesopore feature leads to efficient surface reduction in solution at room temperature, which allows for retention of the nanowire morphology and 1D charge transport behavior, while at the same time substantially increasing the oxygen vacancies on the nanowire surface. Compared to pristine Co3O4 nanowires, the reduced Co3O4 nanowires exhibit a much larger current of 13.1 mA cm‐2 at 1.65 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a much lower onset potential of 1.52 V vs RHE. Electrochemical supercapacitors based on the reduced Co3O4 nanowires also show a much improved capacitance of 978 F g‐1 and reduced charge transfer resistance. Density‐functional theory calculations reveal that the existence of oxygen vacancies leads to the formation of new gap states in which the electrons previously associated with the Co‐O bonds tend to be delocalized, resulting in the much higher electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic activity.

Abstract:As an important class of carbon nanomaterials, carbon nano onions (CNOs) have attracted considerable interest in recent years due to their unique structures and properties. In this work, the electrochemical synthesis of CNOs (including hollow carbon nano onions (H-CNOs) and solid carbon nano onions (S-CNOs)) was achieved from simple aromatic compounds in acetonitrile on a platinum plate electrode by a multi-potential steps method. The electrolytic products on the platinum plate electrode were separated to obtain H-CNOs and S-CNOs by heating treatment, followed by ultrasonic and gradient centrifugation. The reaction mechanism was presumed to be involved with dehydrogenation oxidation and reductive dimerization, as well as cross-linking reactions. The obtained H-CNOs and S-CNOs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. This work has provided a new approach to synthesize and separate S-CNOs and H-CNOs. The developed method does not require sophisticated equipment or high energy consumption. The obtained CNOs would be applicable to construct electrocatalysis and sensing interfaces.
Single-Step Preparation of Ultrasmall Iron Oxide-Embedded Carbon Nanotubes on Carbon Cloth with Excellent Superhydrophilicity and Enhanced Supercapacitor Performance

Abstract:Nanocomposites consisting of carbon materials and metal oxides are generally preferred as anodes in electrochemical energy storage. However, their low capacitance limits the achieved energy density of supercapacitors (SCs) in aqueous electrolytes. Herein, we propose a rapid combustion strategy to construct a novel electrode architecture-ultrasmall Fe2O3 anchoring on carbon nanotubes (FeO-CNT)-as a superhydrophilic and flexible anode for SCs. In 1 M Na2SO4 aqueous electrolyte, such an FeO-CNT-20 anode presents a high capacitance of 483.4 mF cm-2 (326 F g-1) at 1 mA cm-2. The aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor devices (ASCs) assembled by FeO-CNT-20 and MnO2 present a maximum operating potential of 2.0 V with a high areal energy density of 0.11 mWh cm-2 at a power density of 0.5 mW cm-2. The flexible solid-state ASCs display an energy density of 0.99 mWh cm-3 at 14.3 mW cm-3. The rapidly prepared FeO-CNT not only offers an attractive electrode for SCs but also would open up exciting new avenues to the rational design and large-scale preparation of Fe2O3-based nanocomposites for electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:An ionic liquid derived Co3O4/carbon nano-onions composite has been prepared by carbothermal reduction followed by oxidation. The introduction of carbon nano-onions improves the conductivity and structural stability of Co3O4 electrode material. Electrochemical measurements indicate that the redox reversibility is significantly improved. The Co3O4/carbon nano-onions composite shows a large specific capacitance of 402.35 F g(-1) at a current density of 0.5 A g(-1). After 9000 cycles, the specific capacitance retention remained 76 % at 1 A g(-1). The as-prepared Co3O4/carbon nano-onions composite delivers superior capacitive performance with good rate capability, large specific capacitance, and excellent cyclic performance, showing great application potential for high-performance electrochemical supercapacitors.
A Fullerene Seeded Strategy for Facile Construction of Nitrogen‐Doped Carbon Nano‐Onions As Robust Electrocatalysts

Abstract:Carbon nano‐onions (CNOs) as a novel form of carbon materials hold peculiar structural features but their electrocatalytic applications are largely discouraged by the demanding synthesis conditions (e.g., ≥1500 °C and vacuum). Using C60 fullerene molecules as the sacrificial seeds and melamine as the main feedstock, herein, a novel strategy for the facile construction of CNOs nanoparticles is presented with ultrafine sizes (≈5 nm) at relatively low temperatures (≤900 °C) and atmospheric pressure. During the calcination, in‐depth characterizations reveal that C60 can retain the melamine‐derived graphitic carbon nitride from complete sublimation at high temperatures (≥700 °C). Owing to the N removal and subsequent pentagon generation, severely deformed graphitic fragments together with the disintegrated C60 molecules merge into larger sized nanosheets with high curvature, eventually leading to the formation of N‐doped defect‐rich CNOs. Owing to the integration of multiple favorable structural features of pentagons, edges, and N dopants, the CNOs obtained at 900 °C present superior oxygen reduction half‐wave potential (0.853 VRHE) and zinc–air cathode performance to the commercial Pt/C (0.838 VRHE). Density functional theory calculation further uncovers that the carbon atoms adjacent to the N‐doped edged pentagons are turned into the ORR‐active sites with O2 protonation as the rate‐determining step.

Abstract:Carbon nano-onions (CNOs) as one of the carbon allotropes, possessing peculiar structure, are composed of multilayered concentric graphitic shells. CNOs can be classified into two types, including hollow polyhedral CNOs and core–shell structured CNOs. CNOs have attracted a great deal of attention because of their unique chemical and physical properties. Dependent on these properties they show potential applications in many areas such as solid lubricants, electrode materials in capacitors, as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries, and as catalyst support in fuel cells as well as biomedical field as pharmaceutical delivery platforms 1. However, to produce CNOs in quantity would be extremely challenging, especially hollow polyhedral carbon onions. At present, the preparation methods of CNOs reported included annealing of nanodiamonds at high temperature 2, thermal treatment of laser pyrolysis carbon blacks and co-sputtering 3, chemical vapour deposition 4 and so on. The common characteristic of these methods was the need for high temperature. Due to lack of controllable preparation methods, little research on hollow polyhedral CNOs has been reported. Here, we describe a simple electrochemical method to prepare high quality hollow polyhedral CNOs without the use of high temperature equipment. Electrochemical synthesis was carried out in a mixed solution of acetonitrile and toluene containing 0.10 M tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate by using a three-electrode electrochemical system with a platinum plate electrode as the working electrode, a platinum plate electrode as the counter electrode and a Ag rod as the quasi reference electrode in a glove box, as shown in Figure 1a. Multi-potential steps electrolysis were employed. The obtained solid products after electrolysis for a few hours were dispersed in N-cyclohexylpyrrolidone by ultrasonication, and then the solid spherical CNOs and the hollow polyhedral CNOs were separated by gradient centrifugation, as shown in Figures 1b and 1c by high resolution transmission electron microscope characterization. Figure 1d displays TEM oblique image of a hollow polyhedral CNO. A series of images obtained from different tilt angles proved that CNOs were polyhedral hollow structures. Hollow carbon nano onions have an average diameter of 20 nm. The synthetic method is economical and environmentally friendly. Because the CNOs obtained by different methods owned different structures and properties, the properties and applications of the hollow polyhedral CNOs are under way. Molten-salt-assisted synthesis of onion-like Co/CoO@FeNC materials with boosting reversible oxygen electrocatalysis for rechargeable Zn-air battery

Abstract:A melt-salt-assisted method is utilized to construct an onion-like hybrid with Co/CoO nanoparticles embedded in graphitic Fe-N-doped carbon shells (Co/) as a bifunctional electrocatalyst. The iron-polypyrrole (Fe-PPy) is firstly prepared with a reverse emulsion. Direct pyrolysis of Fe-PPy yields turbostratic Fe-N-doped carbon (FeNC) with excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysis, while the melt salt (CoCl2) mediated pyrolysis of Fe-PPy obtains onion-like Co/ with a reversible overvoltage value of 0.695 V, largely superior to Pt/C and IrO2 (0.771 V) and other Co-based catalysts reported so far. The ORR activity is mainly due to the graphitic FeNC and further enhanced by Co-Nx bonds, whereas the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity is principally due to the Co/CoO composite. Concurrently, Co/ as cathode catalyst enables Zn-air battery with a high open circuit voltage of 1.42 V, a peak power density of 132.8 mW cm-2, a specific capacity of 813 mAh gZn-1, and long-term stability.

Abstract:Onion like carbon (OLC) has attracted much attention due to its promising electrochemical properties which originate from its multi sp2 carbon shells that form a spherical nanostructure with uniform size distribution. When utilized as active electrode material in electrochemical cells, it induces fast ionic diffusion and transport rates and can be used in ultrahigh powered supercapacitors. Despite the substantial promise, OLC is typically synthesized by thermal treatment of nanodiamonds (NDs) in a harsh environment (e.g., up to 1800 °C in a high vacuum), which is not feasible for direct synthesis from various substrates. Here, we propose a facile laser-induced site-selective synthesis method of OLC from ND thin film formed by a solution-based process. Spin coating of ultra-dispersed ND ink with uniform size distribution allows preparation of ND thin films of varying thickness on glass and metal substrates. Pulsed laser irradiation in a vacuum transforms the NDs into OLC in an arbitrary area, which is verified by Raman and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. The laser-synthesized OLC was employed as an active electrode in supercapacitors and demonstrated fast charge and discharge rates, hence exhibiting comparable performance to that of OLC obtained by furnace annealing. We believe that our results open an avenue to explore various electrochemical applications of OLC with designed patterns.
One-step synthesis of ultra-small Fe2O3 nanoparticles on carbon nanotubes at a low temperature as a high-performance anode for supercapacitors

Abstract:The composites of Fe2O3 nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be applied in many fields including energy storage. The synthesis of Fe2O3/CNTs composite is usually carried out under high temperatures with complicated processes. To solve these problems, we report a novel one-step chemical bath deposition method to synthesize it at a very low temperature in this work. With DMF as a complex agent, ferrous cations can be well combined with the external surface of CNTs to form small Fe2O3 nanoparticles just at 70 °C for 2-h reaction. XRD, SEM, and TEM analyses confirm that as-prepared Fe2O3 nanoparticles are ultra-small, well crystallized, and highly dispersed onto the surface of CNTs. When being used as an electrode material for supercapacitor, the composite has a specific capacitance of 942 F g−1 at 2 A g−1 and 645 F g−1 at 15 A g−1, exhibiting a higher specific capacitance than previously reported Fe2O3/CNTs composites due to its smaller size.

Abstract:Synthesizing low-cost and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for hybrid supercapacitors and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critically essential for the progress of energy storage and conversion devices. Therefore, a novel, inexpensive and superhydrophilic bifunctional NiCuMn@TiN nanosheet supported on iron foam (NiCuMn@TiN/IF) is successfully designed and fabricated via spent cupronickel (SCN) as Ni and Cu precursor by a facile one-step electrosynthesis routine. With adding nano titanium nitride (TiN), the obtained NiCuMn@TiN/IF composite electrode not only possesses a large superhydrophilic surface that enhances ion/electron transfer efficiency and provides numerous activity sites for the electrochemical reaction but also achieves efficient recovery of metal resources using the secondary resource SCN as soluble anode further reduces the cost of electrode preparation. And since the synergistic effect of large specific surface area and superhydrophilicity, the NiCuMn@TiN/IF delivers a high specific capacity of 22.5 F cm −2 at 10 mA cm −2 in 3 M KOH and also illustrates superior OER activity with an extremely low overpotential (286 mV) and remarkable durability at a high current density of 100 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. This research provides a solid foundation for the large-scale preparation of low-cost and high-performance non-precious metal bifunctional electrocatalysts for the commercial development of electrochemical supercapacitors and electrochemical water-to-hydrogen conversion technology.

Copper Oxide Nanoparticles Anchored on Porous Carbon Nitride Nanosheets for Supercapacitor Applications

Abstract:Electrochemical energy storage devices are vital for renewable energy integration and the deployment of electric vehicles. Ongoing research seeks to create new materials with innovative morphologies capable of delivering high specific capacitance for the next generation of customizable energy devices. Carbon nitride is an excellent candidate for electrochemical energy storage devices; however, it has limitations such as layer stacking, poor electric conductivity, a restricted number of electroactive sites, and static electrochemical reaction rates. This research objective is to make porous structures in carbon nitride nanosheets and integrate them with CuO particles to increase surface area and improve electrochemical performance. The use of thermal heating, acidic treatment, and hydrothermal processes accomplishes this. Along with X‐ray diffraction peaks of the CuO phase, a prominent peak (002) at 27.67° indicates the presence of graphitic‐structured carbon nitride. TEM images show that CuO particles are evenly attached to the surface of g‐C3N4 nanosheets with lattice intervals of 0.336 and 0.232 nm, which are the (002) and (111) orientations of the g‐C3N4 and CuO phases, respectively. Adding CuO nanoparticles to porous g‐C3N4 nanosheets avoids layer stacking and provides micro‐ and mesopore channels, increasing the specific surface area (42.60 m2 g-1). The CuO@ porous g‐C3N4 electrode delivered 817 F g-1 of specific capacitance at 1 A g-1 and admirable capacitance retention (92.3% after 6000 cycles) due to the synergistic impact of its unique composition and structural characteristics. Because of its outstanding electrochemical performance and fascinating discoveries, CuO@ porous g‐C3N4 may be employed as a cathode material for high‐performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Renewable energy storage and conversion in electrochemical fuel cells require highly efficient and cost-effective noble metal free electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Downscaling of a material to nanoscale morphology can lead to enhancement in its surface activities affecting its physical and chemical properties which can well serve the purpose. In lieu to this, it could be one of the first reports to tune the morphology of CuO particles to 10-25 nm finely trapped inside non-graphitic carbon sheets using a novel single step solid state reaction. XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, and Raman analyses confirm the structural and morphological attributes. The synergistic effect from carbon and copper oxide resulted in the attainment of best-in-class electrode material for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The as-prepared CuO/C shows an excellent OER activity with a low overpotential of 454 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl) at a current density of 10 mA cm -2 with a low Tafel slope of 74.9 mV dec -1 . The amount of carbon is optimized to get optimal performance from the CuO nanopowder.

Abstract:Nanostructured carbon materials have served as potent electrode materials and crucial components for energy storage; however, multi-function integration of the synthesis route is hugely challenging. Consequently, we report herein a facile and general methodology for the synthesis of multifunctional materials, specifically mesoporous onion-like carbon (OLC) and core-shell Fe2O3@N-doped carbon hybrids, derived from water soluble gelatin and ferric nitrate precursors, which could function as high-performance electrodes for supercapacitors (SCs) and Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Owing to the strong chelation effect between the abundant functional groups of gelatin chains and metal ions, in situ-formed uniform confined nanoparticles (NPs) in a three-dimensional (3D) carbon framework could exert the triple roles of templates, graphitizing catalysts, and active materials via controllable annealing. Mesoporous OLC-3 with hollow core size of 5-8 nm, high specific surface area of 418 m(2) g(-1), thin shells of 3-5 graphitic layers, and rich oxygen content (18.62%) exhibited a remarkable specific capacitance (251.2 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)), surpassing most OLC state-of-the-art SC electrodes. Besides, the as-obtained core-shelled Fe2O3@N-doped carbon annealed at 500 degrees C composed of a gelatin-derived carbon-coating layer (ca. 4 nm) and uniform Fe2O3 core (ca. 30 nm) greatly enhanced the rate capability (achieving an average reversible capacity of 735.9 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1) and 480.6 mA h g(-1) at a large current density of 2 A g(-1)) and demonstrated an excellent cycling life (372 mA h g(-1) after 500 cycles at 1 A g(-1), or 0.39 mA h g(-1) decay per cycle) for Li storage. This method is quite flexible and could be also extended to the synthesis of other metal-based functional materials.

Abstract:Challenge remains in the supercapacitor development for simultaneously realizing high power density and high energy density, hindering its durable power application in renewable energy technologies. Herein, a nitrogen/oxygen-codoped interconnected hollow carbon nano-onion structure (N,O-IHCNO) was synthesized for fast accommodating and releasing large amounts of ionic liquid ions. The novel structure was prepared using monodispersed uniform-sized Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles as sacrificing templates and oleic acid ligands bounded to the surface as carbon source. The tetrahedron- and octahedron-type pores originated from the closed packing of onion particles build the fast ion transportation tunnel. Three-dimensional covalently interconnected graphitic layers greatly improve the conductivity of the carbon onion structure. Heteroatom doping increases the surface polarity, electrolyte affinity and energy storage capacitance. These merits jointly make the structural advantages of CNOs in energy storage well utilized, resulting in a superhigh power density of 400 kW kg −1 in the supercapacitor based on N,O-IHCNOs in ionic liquid, with a high energy density of 71 Wh kg −1 achieved meanwhile. Moreover, a maximum energy density of 195.6 Wh kg −1 can be reached at 2 kW kg −1 . This study provides a strategy for synthesis of high-performance CNOs-based electrode materials for reliable and efficient electricity storage equipment and devices.

Abstract:A simple, scalable, and environmentally friendly process was demonstrated for the synthesis of Co 3 O 4 nanostructures using lemon juice and hydrothermal chemistry. The reducing, capping, and stabilizing agents in lemon juice result in improved performance in oxygen evolution reactions and supercapacitors due to their positive effects on morphology, crystal size, and surface defects. Several techniques were used to characterize Co 3 O 4 nanostructures grown with different quantities of lemon juice, including field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The results show that lemon juice alters the size and homogeneity of Co 3 O 4 nanostructures as well as surface defects like oxygen vacancies and interstitial Co. A sample prepared with 4 mL of lemon juice (sample 1) performed best, demonstrating an overpotential of 260 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and good stability at 20 mA cm −2 for 40 h. With the prepared nanomaterial, supercapacitors were developed with a specific capacitance of 398 F g −1 at 0.8 A g −1 , a specific capacity retention percentage of 97%, a high energy density of 9.5 Wh kg −1 , and excellent stability during 880 galvanic charge and discharge cycles. Co 3 O 4 nanostructures have experienced dramatic improvements in electrochemical performance as a result of morphological changes and oxygen vacancy concentrations on their surfaces. By reducing, capping, and stabilizing lemon juice, a new generation of electroactive electrodes have been developed for storage and conversion of energy.

Abstract:Carbon nano‐onions (CNOs) synthesized by a single‐step flame soot collection method, subsequently calcined at 600°C in an inert environment (CNO‐600), are used as electrode material for the hybrid ultracapacitors. The lead‐carbon hybrid ultracapacitor fabricated using CNO‐600 as anode material and PbO2 as cathode delivers a specific capacitance of 515 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 in 4.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte in the voltage range of 2.3 and 0.6 V, demonstrate an excellent opportunity for the development of high‐performance supercapacitors. Summary Carbon and metal oxide nanocomposites have been extensively studied as electrode materials to develop energy and power‐dense supercapacitors in recent years. Nevertheless, nano carbons with improved porosity and functional moieties are the most eco‐friendly and cost‐effective supercapacitor materials. In this work, carbon nano‐onions (CNOs) synthesized by a single‐step flame soot collection method, subsequently calcined at 600°C in an inert environment (CNO‐600), are used as electrode material for the supercapacitors. CNO‐600 s have a layer‐by‐layer nano onion structure with a ~25 nm particle size and a Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area of 147 m2 g−1. CNO‐600 delivers 266 and 186 F g−1 of capacitance at 0.5 A g−1 for half cells and symmetric ultracapacitors, respectively. Ultracapacitors show capacitance retention of 91% with 20 000 GCD cycles in 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte. The stable capacitance of CNO‐600 is due to easy intercalation/de‐intercalation of electrolyte ions and electrons in the layer‐by‐layer structure of CNOs, contributing to pseudocapacitive charge storage with electric double layer capacitor behavior. The lead‐carbon hybrid ultracapacitor fabricated using CNO‐600 as anode material and PbO2 as cathode delivers a specific capacitance of 515 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 in 4.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte in the voltage range of 2.3 and 0.6 V. The substantial improvement of charge storage in CNO‐based symmetric and lead‐carbon hybrid system, demonstrate an excellent opportunity for the development of high‐performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:A one-pot solvothermal strategy and subsequent calcination were proposed for fabricating a composite of NiO nanoparticles on hexagonal Ni-based metal–organic framework (Ni-MOF) (). The prepared NiO nanoparticles on the hexagonal Ni-MOF not only improves the electrical conductivity and increases redox active sites, but also prevents the agglomeration of NiO nanoparticles. In particular, highly dispersed and small-sized NiO nanoparticles on the hexagonal Ni-MOF facilitates the migration of electrolyte ions, and the pseudocapacitive performance is evaluated through electrochemical measurements. At 0.5 A g−1, the composite shows a specific capacitance of up to 1192.7 F g−1 and a high capacity retention (93.23% over 5000 cycles) in 3 M KOH. Moreover, the nanoparticles and activated carbon are assembled into aqueous devices with a maximum energy density of 62.2 Wh kg−1. These results indicate the potential of composite as an electrode material for application in supercapacitors. Additionally, the method of synthesizing in this study can be used to synthesize other oxide materials for electrochemical energy storage and other related applications.

Abstract:High-quality ultrathin two-dimensional nanosheets of α-Ni(OH)2 are synthesized at large scale via microwave-assisted liquid-phase growth under low-temperature atmospheric conditions. After heat treatment, non-layered NiO nanosheets are obtained while maintaining their original frame structure. The well-defined and freestanding nanosheets exhibit a micron-sized planar area and ultrathin thickness (<2 nm), suggesting an ultrahigh surface atom ratio with unique surface and electronic structure. The ultrathin 2D nanostructure can make most atoms exposed outside with high activity thus facilitate the surface-dependent electrochemical reaction processes. The ultrathin α-Ni(OH)2 and NiO nanosheets exhibit enhanced supercapacitor performances. Particularly, the α-Ni(OH)2 nanosheets exhibit a maximum specific capacitance of 4172.5 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1. Even at higher rate of 16 A g−1, the specific capacitance is still maintained at 2680 F g−1 with 98.5% retention after 2000 cycles. Even more important, we develop a facile and scalable method to produce high-quality ultrathin transition metal hydroxide and oxide nanosheets and make a possibility in commercial applications.
