Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenide TiSe2 exhibits a superconducting dome within a low pressure range of 2-4 GPa, which peaks with the maximal transition temperature Tc of ≈1.8 K. Here it is reported that applying high pressure induces a new superconducting state in TiSe2, which starts at ≈16 GPa with a substantially higher Tc that reaches 5.6 K at ≈21.5 GPa with no sign of decline. Combining high-throughput first-principles structure search, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy measurements up to 30 GPa, It is found that TiSe2 undergoes a first-order structural transition from the 1T phase under ambient pressure to a new 4O phase under high pressure. Comparative ab initio calculations reveal that while the conventional phonon-mediated pairing mechanism may account for the superconductivity observed in 1T-TiSe2 under low pressure, the electron-phonon coupling of 4O-TiSe2 is too weak to induce a superconducting state whose transition temperature is as high as 5.6 K under high pressure. The new superconducting state found in pressurized TiSe2 requires further study on its underlying mechanism.

Abstract:Bulk 1T-TiTe2 (hexagonal, space group P-3m1) exhibits semimetallic conductivity with weak Anderson localization characteristic at ambient pressure, but superconductivity under high pressure of similar to 5GPa. Here the detailed evolutions of structural and transport properties in TiTe2 during compression are investigated by extending pressure up to 50.2 GPa. The combined high-pressure electrical transport and synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments unravel two critical pressure points. At P-c1 similar to 5.4GPa, the superconductivity emerges, which is accompanied by a structural transition from P-3m1 to a mixture of P-3m1 and monoclinic C2/m phase. The localization effect maintains until the structural transition is over at P-c2 similar to 19.1GPa, meanwhile the Hall coefficient RH changes from positive to negative. Our results demonstrate that the superconductivity in the pressurized TiTe2 can be assigned to the high-pressure C-2/m phase which is electron dominated.

Abstract:We investigate the hydrostatic pressure dependence of interfacial superconductivity occurring at the atomically sharp interface between two non-superconducting materials: the topological insulator (TI) Bi2Te3 and the parent compound Fe1+yTe of the chalcogenide iron-based superconductors. Under pressure, a significant increase in the superconducting transition temperature Tc is observed. We interpret our data in the context of a pressure-induced enhanced coupling of the Fe1+yTe interfacial layer with the Bi2Te3 surface state, which modifies the electronic properties of the interface layer in a way that superconductivity emerges and becomes further enhanced under pressure. This demonstrates the important role of the TI in the interfacial superconducting mechanism.

Abstract:Transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTCs) offer remarkable opportunities for tuning electronic states through modifications in chemical composition, temperature, and pressure. Despite considerable interest in TMTCs, there remain significant knowledge gaps concerning the evolution of their electronic properties under compression. In this study, we employ experimental and theoretical approaches to comprehensively explore the high-pressure behavior of the electronic properties of TiS3, a quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) semiconductor, across various temperature ranges. Through high-pressure electrical resistance and magnetic measurements at elevated pressures, we uncover a distinctive sequence of phase transitions within TiS3, encompassing a transformation from an insulating state at ambient pressure to the emergence of an incipient superconducting state above 70 GPa. Our findings provide compelling evidence that superconductivity at low temperatures of ∼2.9 K is a fundamental characteristic of TiS3, shedding new light on the intriguing high-pressure electronic properties of TiS3 and underscoring the broader implications of our discoveries for TMTCs in general.

Abstract:Through either elements intercalation or application of pressure, transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-TiSe2 exhibits superconductivity in proximity to a charge density wave (CDW) quantum critical point (QCP), thus providing an ideal avenue to study the correlation between the two symmetry-breaking exotic quantum electronic states. We report herein that, in addition to the well-known superconducting dome that emerges within the low pressure range of 2 - 4 GPa and peaks with the maximal Tc of about 1.8 K, the pressure induces another separate superconducting transition starting around 15 GPa with a substantially higher Tc that reaches 5.6 K at about 21.5 GPa. The high-pressure X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy measurements unveil that the superconductivity reentrant is caused by a first-order structural phase transition (from P-3m1 space group to Pnma space group), which is also supported by the density functional theory calculation. A comparative theoretical calculation also reveals that the conventional phonon-mediated mechanism can account for the superconductivity of 1T-TiSe2 under low pressure, while the electron-phonon coupling of 4O-TiSe2 under high pressure is too weak to induce the superconductivity with a Tc as high as 5.6 K. This implies that the emergent superconductivity in the 4O-TiSe2 may have an unconventional origin. Our finding would open a new window toward the discovery of more exotic quantum states in transition metal dichalcogenides via high pressure.

Abstract:Abstract We report systematic studies of a new quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) compound, Ba 3 TiTe 5 , and the high-pressure induced superconductivity therein. Ba 3 TiTe 5 was synthesized at high pressure and high temperature. It crystallizes into a hexagonal structure ( P 6 3 /mcm ), which consists of infinite face-sharing octahedral TiTe 6 chains and Te chains along the c axis, exhibiting a strong 1D characteristic structure. The first-principles calculations demonstrate that Ba 3 TiTe 5 is a well-defined 1D conductor; thus, it can be considered a starting point to explore the exotic physics induced by pressure by enhancing the interchain hopping to move the 1D conductor to a high-dimensional metal. For Ba 3 TiTe 5 , high-pressure techniques were employed to study the emerging physics dependent on interchain hopping, such as the Umklapp scattering effect, spin/charge density wave (SDW/CDW), superconductivity and non-Fermi liquid behavior. Finally, a complete phase diagram was plotted. The superconductivity emerges at 8.8 GPa, near which the Umklapp gap is mostly suppressed. T c is enhanced and reaches a maximum of ~6 K at ~36.7 GPa, where the SDW/CDW is completely suppressed, and a non-Fermi liquid behavior appears. Our results suggest that the appearance of superconductivity is associated with the fluctuation due to the suppression of the Umklapp gap and that the enhancement of the T c is related to the fluctuation of the SDW/CDW.

Abstract:We investigate the hydrostatic pressure dependence of interfacial superconductivity occurring at the atomically sharp interface between two non-superconducting materials: the topological insulator (TI) Bi2Te3 and the parent compound Fe1+yTe of the chalcogenide iron based superconductors. Under pressure, a significant increase in the superconducting transition temperature Tc is observed. We trace the pressure dependence of a superconducting twin gap structure by Andreev reflection point contact spectroscopy (PCARS), which shows that a large superconducting gap associated with the interfacial superconductivity increases along with Tc. A second smaller gap, which is attributed to proximity-induced superconductivity in the TI layer, increases first, but then reaches a maximum and appears to be gradually suppressed at higher pressure. We interpret our data in the context of a pressure-induced doping effect of the interface, in which charge is transferred from the TI layer to the interface and the interfacial superconductivity is enhanced. This demonstrates the important role of the TI in the interfacial superconductivity mechanism.

Abstract: Tungsten ditelluride (WTe2) has attracted significant attention due to its interesting electronic properties, such as the unsaturated magnetoresistance and superconductivity. Recently, it has been proposed to be a new type of Weyl semimetal, which is distinguished from other transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) from a topological prospective. Here, we study the structure of WTe2 under pressure with a crystal structure prediction and ab initio calculations combined with high pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy measurements. We find that the ambient orthorhombic structure (Td) transforms into a monoclinic structure (1T') at around 4-5 GPa. As the transition pressure is very close to the critical point in recent high-pressure electrical transport measurements, the emergence of superconductivity in WTe2 under pressure is attributed to the Td-1T' structure phase transition, which associates with a sliding mechanism of the TMD layers and results in a shorter Te-Te interlayer distance compared to the intralayer ones. These results highlight the critical role of the interlayer stacking and chalcogen interactions on the electronic and superconducting properties of multilayered TMDs under hydrostatic strain environments.

Abstract:Tungsten ditelluride has attracted intense research interest due to the recent discovery of its large unsaturated magnetoresistance up to 60 T. Motivated by the presence of a small, sensitive Fermi surface of 5 d electronic orbitals, we boost the electronic properties by applying a high pressure, and introduce superconductivity successfully. Superconductivity sharply appears at a pressure of 2.5 GPa, rapidly reaching a maximum critical temperature ( T c ) of 7 K at around 16.8 GPa, followed by a monotonic decrease in T c with increasing pressure, thereby exhibiting the typical dome-shaped superconducting phase. From theoretical calculations, we interpret the low-pressure region of the superconducting dome to an enrichment of the density of states at the Fermi level and attribute the high-pressure decrease in T c to possible structural instability. Thus, tungsten ditelluride may provide a new platform for our understanding of superconductivity phenomena in transition metal dichalcogenides.
Evolution of Structural and Electronic Properties of TiSe2 under High Pressure

Abstract:A pressure-induced structural phase transition and its intimate link with the superconducting transition was studied for the first time in TiSe2 up to 40 GPa at room temperature using X-ray diffraction, transport measurement, and first-principles calculations. We demonstrate the occurrence of a first-order structural phase transition at 4 GPa from the standard trigonal structure (S.G.P3̅m1) to another trigonal structure (S-G-P3̅c1). Additionally, at 16 GPa, the P3̅c1 phase spontaneously transforms into a monoclinic C2/m phase, and above 24 GPa, the C2/m phase returns to the initial P3̅m1 phase. Electrical transport results show that metallization occurs above 6 GPa. The charge density wave observed at ambient pressure is suppressed upon compression up to 2 GPa with the emergence of superconductivity at 2.5 GPa, with a critical temperature (Tc) of 2 K. A structural transition accompanies the emergence of superconductivity that persists up to 4 GPa. The results demonstrate that the pressure-induced phase transitions explored by the experiments along with the theoretical predictions may open the door to a new path for searching and controlling the phase diagrams of transition metal dichalcogenides.

Abstract:Titanium nitride (TiN) thin films are used for the fabrication of superconducting devices due to their chemical stability against oxidization and high quality at interfaces. The high-pressure technique serves as a useful tool to understand the mechanical and electrical properties of materials, which is crucial for practical applications. However, high-pressure transport measurements of thin films are extremely difficult due to the limited sample space of high-pressure cells and the fragility of thin films. Here, we successfully carried out high-pressure electrical transport and Raman measurements on TiN films up to ∼50 GPa. The superconducting transition temperature gradually decreases with increasing pressure, which can be attributed to the decrease of electron -phonon coupling and is consistent with our first-principles calculations. In addition, the coexistence of a symmetry-enforced Dirac nodal chain and a nodal box is revealed by our calculations in TiN. Our work provides a promising way to study the physical properties of thin films at high pressure, which would broaden the high-pressure research field.

Abstract:Topological insulators offer significant potential to revolutionize diverse fields driven by nontrivial manifestations of their topological electronic band structures. However, the realization of superior integration between exotic topological states and superconductivity for practical applications remains a challenge, necessitating a profound understanding of intricate mechanisms. Here, we report experimental observations for a novel superconducting phase in the pressurized second-order topological insulator candidate Ta2Pd3Te5, and the high-pressure phase maintains its original ambient pressure lattice symmetry up to 45 GPa. Our in situ high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction, electrical transport, infrared reflectance, and Raman spectroscopy measurements, in combination with rigorous theoretical calculations, provide compelling evidence for the association between the superconducting behavior and the densified phase. The electronic state change around 20 GPa was found to modify the topology of the Fermi surface directly, which synergistically fosters the emergence of robust superconductivity. In-depth comprehension of the fascinating properties exhibited by the compressed Ta2Pd3Te5 phase is achieved, highlighting the extraordinary potential of topological insulators for exploring and investigating high-performance electronic advanced devices under extreme conditions.

Abstract:Titanium disulfide (TiS 2 ) has drawn considerable attention in materials, physics, and chemistry thanks to its potential applications in batteries, supercapattery and thermoelectric devices. However, the simplified and controlled synthesis of high-quality TiS 2 remains a great challenge. In this study, a straightforward, widely accessible approach to the one-step chemical vapor transport (CVT) process is presented. Meanwhile, combining high-pressure (HP) Raman spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations, the pressure-induced phase transition of TiS 2 from P-3m1 Phase (phase I) to C2/m Phase (Phase II) at 16.0 GPa and then to P-62m phase (Phase III) at 32.4 GPa was disclosed. The discovery of HP dives within the Weyl semi-metallic phase represents a significant advancement toward understanding the electronic topological states, discovering new physical phenomena, developing new electronic devices, and gaining insight into the properties of elementary particles.

Abstract:Recently, theoretical studies show that layered HfTe5 is at the boundary of weak & strong topological insulator (TI) and might crossover to a Dirac semimetal state by changing lattice parameters. The topological properties of 3D stacked HfTe5 are expected hence to be sensitive to pressures tuning. Here, we report pressure induced phase evolution in both electronic & crystal structures for HfTe5 with a culmination of pressure induced superconductivity. Our experiments indicated that the temperature for anomaly resistance peak (Tp) due to Lifshitz transition decreases first before climbs up to a maximum with pressure while the Tp minimum corresponds to the transition from a weak TI to strong TI. The HfTe5 crystal becomes superconductive above ~5.5 GPa where the Tp reaches maximum. The highest superconducting transition temperature (Tc) around 5 K was achieved at 20 GPa. Crystal structure studies indicate that HfTe5 transforms from a Cmcm phase across a monoclinic C2/m phase then to a P-1 phase with increasing pressure. Based on transport, structure studies a comprehensive phase diagram of HfTe5 is constructed as function of pressure. The work provides valuable experimental insights into the evolution on how to proceed from a weak TI precursor across a strong TI to superconductors.

Abstract:Weyl semimetal defines a material with three-dimensional Dirac cones, which appear in pair due to the breaking of spatial inversion or time reversal symmetry. Superconductivity is the state of quantum condensation of paired electrons. Turning a Weyl semimetal into superconducting state is very important in having some unprecedented discoveries. In this work, by doing resistive measurements on a recently recognized Weyl semimetal TaP under pressures up to about 100 GPa, we show the concurrence of superconductivity and a structure transition at about 70 GPa. It is found that the superconductivity becomes more pronounced when decreasing pressure and retains when the pressure is completely released. High-pressure x-ray diffraction measurements also confirm the structure phase transition from I4(1)md to P-6m2 at about 70 GPa. More importantly, ab-initial calculations reveal that the P-6m2 phase is a new Weyl semimetal phase and has only one set of Weyl points at the same energy level. Our discovery of superconductivity in TaP by high pressure will stimulate investigations on superconductivity and Majorana fermions in Weyl semimetals.

Abstract:Abstract The adoption of high pressure not only reinforces the comprehension of the structure and exotic electronic states of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) but also promotes the discovery of intriguing phenomena. Here, 1T-TaS 2 was investigated up to 100 GPa, and re-enhanced superconductivity was found with structural phase transitions. The discovered I4/mmm TaS 2 presents strong electron–phonon coupling, revealing a good superconductivity of the nonlayered structure. The P – T phase diagram shows a dome shape centered at ~20 GPa, which is attributed to the distortion of the 1T structure. Accompanied by the transition to nonlayered structure above 44.5 GPa, the superconducting critical temperature shows an increasing trend and reaches ~7 K at the highest studied pressure, presenting superior superconductivity compared to the original layered structure. It is unexpected that the pressure-induced re-enhanced superconductivity was observed in TMDs, and the transition from a superconductor with complicated electron-pairing mechanism to a phonon-mediated superconductor would expand the field of pressure-modified superconductivity.

Pressure-induced Superconductivity in Tellurium Single Crystal

Abstract:Tellurium (Te) is one of the p-orbital chalcogens, which shows attractive physical properties at ambient pressure. Here, we systematically investigate both structural and electronic evolution of Te single crystal under high pressure up to 40 GPa. The pressure dependence of the experimental Raman spectrum reveals the occurrence of multiple phase transitions, which is consistent with highpressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The appearance of superconductivity in high-pressure phase of Te is accompanied by structural phase transitions. The high-pressure phases of Te reveal a nonmonotonic evolution of superconducting temperature Tc with notably different upper critical fields. The theoretical calculations demonstrate that the pressure dependence of the density of states(DOS) agrees well with the variation of Tc. Our results provide a systematic phase diagram for the pressure-induced superconductivity of Te.

Origin of Superconductivity and Giant Phonon Softening in TlInTe$_2$ under Pressure

Abstract:Analogous to 2D layered transition metal dichalcogenides, the TlSe family of 1D chain materials with Zintl-type structure exhibits exotic phenomena under high-pressure. In the present work, we have systematically investigated the high-pressure behavior of TlInTe 2 using Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and transport measurements, in combination with crystal structure prediction (CSP) based on the evolutionary approach and first principles calculations. We found that TlInTe$_2$ undergoes a pressure driven semiconductor to semimetal transition at 4 GPa, followed by a superconducting transition at 5.7 GPa (with Tc = 3.8 K) induced by a Lifshitz transition. The Lifshitz transition is initiated by the appearance of new electron pockets on the Fermi surface, which evolve with pressure and connect to the adjacent electron pockets forming an umbrella shaped Fermi surface at the top and bottom of the Brillouin zone. An unusual giant phonon softening (Ag mode) concomitant with a V-shaped Tc behavior appears at 10-12 GPa as a result of the interaction of optical phonons with the conduction electrons, resulting in Fano line shaped asymmetry in Ag mode. A prominent Tc anomaly concurrent with the Ag mode softening at 19-20 GPa is correlated to the semimetal to metal transition. The CSP calculations reveal that these transitions are not accompanied by any structural phase transitions up to the maximum pressure achieved, 33.5 GPa. Our findings on TlInTe$_2$ open up a new platform to study a plethora of unexplored high pressure novel phenomena in TlSe family induced by Lifshitz transition (electronic driven), phonon softening and electron-phonon coupling.
