Abstract:In the framework of relativistic mean-field theory, the strength of the pairing force is systematically studied for several isotope chains of rare-earth nuclei. It is shown, for the first time, that the pairing strength of the neutron, G(n), increases dramatically around the magic number N = 82, while for the proton it is strongly related to the odd-even difference of the neutron number. The results indicate a strong correlation between the shell structure and the pairing force strength.

Abstract:The influence of pairing correlations on the size of the nucleus and the development of nuclear halos is studied in the framework of relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov theory. It turns out that the contributions of weakly bounded orbits in the continuum with low orbital angular momenta l play an essential role. Pairing correlations have a two-fold influence on the density distribution of the neutrons and therefore on the total nuclear size. First, they can change the root-mean-square radius of the individual weakly bound orbits and, second, they can change the occupation probabilities of these orbits in the nuclear system. Both effects are important, and finally the total radius is dominated by their competition.

Abstract:Due to the very nature of the nucleon-nucleon interactions, some nucleons form strongly correlated nucleon-nucleon pairs. This paper focuses on the significance of nn pairs for neutron star matter. Inspired by recent numerical and experimental advances in SRCs, we propose density-dependent nucleon momentum distributions with the isospin-asymmetry scaling parameter. We also analyze the impacts of nn pairs on the physical properties of neutron stars. Our numerical results find that nn pairs, plus np pairs, could stiffen the equation of state of neutron star matter and consequently cause a significant increase in the maximum mass of neutron stars. This work might generate a fresh viewpoint on confronting the upper limit on the maximum mass of neutron stars.
Proton-neutron pair correlations in neutron-rich nuclei

Abstract:[Background] Nuclear pairing is a well-established many-body correlation, particularly among like particles in a spin-singlet state. However, the strength of spin-triplet proton-neutron (pn) pairing in nuclei has remained a long-standing and unresolved issue. [Purpose] The relative strength of spin-triplet pn pairing compared to spin-singlet one is investigated by introducing and analyzing the polarizability of the response to pn pair transfers. [Method] The nuclear energy-density functional method is employed. The ground state of the target nucleus is described using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation, which accounts for the conventional superfluidity of like-particle pairs. The response to pn pair transfers is then analyzed using the pn quasiparticle random-phase approximation. [Results] The spin-singlet pn-pair correlation is strongest at $N=Z$ and decreases monotonically with the increasing number of excess neutrons, whereas the spin-triplet pn-pair correlation is shown to depend non-monotonically on the neutron number and can be enhanced in cases where the pn-pair transfers involving the $\pi j_> \otimes \nu j_<$ configuration occur at low energy. [Conclusions] The shell effect, which uniquely appears in spin-triplet pn-pair correlation, serves as a key indicator of the strength of pn-pair correlations.

Abstract:We investigated the effects of the pairing correlation on the quasiparticle resonant energy and width in the neutron-rich Ca isotopes by using the self-consistent continuum Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Green's function method. The resonant energy and width can be read from three kinds of quasiparticle spectra, including the quasiparticle-state probability density, the occupation probability density, and the pair probability density. The results read from different quasiparticle spectra calculated with the same potential are exactly the same for the narrow resonances, while for the broad resonances, the difference among the results are relatively larger. From the comparison between the quasiparticle-state probability density calculated with and without the pairing field, we could separate the effect only from the pairing correlation on the quasiparticle resonances. We found that the pairing correlation can increase the resonant energy and width for both the hole-like and particle-like quasiparticle resonances. And this increase is larger when the state is closer to the Fermi energy, especially for the particle-like quasiparticle resonance originated from the unbound single-particle states with smaller angular momentum $l$ in weakly bound nucleus.

Abstract:The influence of pairing correlations on the nuclear size and in particular on the formation of nuclear halos is studied in the framework of relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) theory. It turns out that the contributions from the weakly-bound orbits with low orbital angular momenta $l$ play an important role. As an example, we investigate the neutron-rich Mg isotopes as a function of the pairing strength in situations, where the neuron Fermi surface are below, between and above two weakly-bound $2p$ levels. We find that the size of the pairing correlations has a two-fold influence on the density distribution of the neutrons and therefore on the total nuclear size. First it can change the root mean square (rms) radius of the individual weakly-bound orbits and second it can enhance the occupation probabilities of these orbits in the nuclear system. On one side increasing pairing correlations reduce the rms radii of the orbits with small orbital angular momenta close to the continuum limit (pairing anti-halo effect), on the other side they also can lead to an enhanced occupation of low-$l$ orbits above the Fermi surface producing in this way a strong increase of the total radius of the nuclear system. As a consequence, a nuclear halo can form even in cases, where non of the individual low-$l$ orbits is very close to the continuum. This leads to the fact that compared with well-bound nuclei, the impact of the pairing strength on the nuclear size is more pronounced in weakly-bound nuclei than in well-bound systems.

Abstract:Nuclear pairing energy of dozens of atomic nuclei in nuclear period chart are calculated along the stable line by extracting the swatch at a proton or neutron number interval of 4. Especially, we have studied the rule of pairing energy of the even-even nuclei of O isotopes changing with nucleon number under the relativistic mean-field model, and found, when energy gap Δ is fixed, the magnitude of nuclear pairing energy is related to nuclear shell structure. Thereof we propose a simple method to test closed shell, and further, we conclude that the neutron number N=6 is a new magic number not only in neutron-rich region, but also in proton-rich region of light nuclei.

Abstract:The nucleon-nucleon pairing forces were studied under the relativistic mean-field theory with the paring corrections by BCS approximation.The coupled equations of motion were solved by self-consistency with the interaction parameter set NL3.The gap parameters were fixed by reproducing ground state properties of 11950Sn,14058Ce,and 17871Lu.The properties of two medium isotope chains Ca and K and three heavy isotope chains Ce,Pr and Nd were investigated.The results indicated that the strength of the pairing forces Gn and Gp have a strong shell effects for the medium(N=20 and 28) and heavy nuclei(N=82) near the β stability line,thus a new method to search new magic numbers was provided.

Abstract:A proper treatment of the resonant continuum is to take account of not only the energy of the resonant state, but also its width. The effect of resonant states on pairing correlations is presented in the framework of the relativistic mean-field theory plus Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) approximation with a constant pairing strength. The study is performed in an effective Lagrangian with the parameter set NL3 for neutron-rich even-even Ni isotopes. Results show that the contribution of the proper treatment of the resonant continuum to pairing correlations for those nuclei close to the neutron drip line is important. The pairing gaps, Fermi energies, pairing correlation energies, and binding energies are considerably affected by a proper consideration of the width of resonant states. The problem of unphysical particle gas, which may appear in the calculation of the traditional mean field plus BCS method for nuclei in the vicinity of the drip line could be well overcome when the pairing correlation is performed by using the resonant states instead of the discretized states in the continuum.

Abstract:The relativistic mean field (RMF) + analytic continuation in the coupling constant (ACCC) + Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) approach is first presented to describe exotic nuclei by taking into account the resonant continuum effect in pairing correlations. Constant pairing strength is used in BCS approximation. Resonance parameters and wave functions are extracted from effective ACCC approach within the framework of the self-consistent RMF theory. The pairing energies, pairing correlation energies, binding energies, two-neutron separation energies, neutron rms radii, and neutron densities for neutron-rich even-even Ni isotopes are explored in the RMF + ACCC + BCS approach with NL3 effective interaction. It shows that the results are in good agreement with those of other theoretical approaches.

Abstract:The contribution of the resonant continuum to pairing correlations is properly treated in the RMF + BCS approximation with a constant pairing strength. The results show that the contribution of the proper treatment of the resonant continuum to pairing correlations for those nuclei close to neutron drip line is important. The quasiparticle relativistic random phase approximation is applied to investigate the collective excitations of the open shell nucleus. The numerical calculations are performed in the case of various isoscalar giant resonances of nucleus Sn-120. The calculated results show that the quasiparticle relativistic random phase approximation approach could satisfactorily reproduce the experimental data of the energies of low-lying states.

Abstract:Pairing from different fermions, neutrons and protons, is unique in nuclear physics. The fingerprint for the isoscalar T=0 neutron–proton (np) pairing has however remained a question. We study this exotic pairing mode in excited states of rotating N≈Z nuclei by applying the state-of-the-art shell-model calculations for 88Ru and the neighboring 90,92Ru isotopes. We show that the T=0 np pairing is responsible for the distinct rotational behavior between the N=Z and N>Z nuclei. Our calculation suggests a gradual crossover from states with mixed T=1 and T=0 pairing near the ground state to those dominated by the T=0 np pairing at high spins. It is found that the T=0 np pairing plays an important role in enhancing the high-spin collectivity, thereby reducing shape variations along the N=Z line.

Abstract:Pairing correlations play a very important role in atomic nuclei. Although several effective pairing interactions have been used in mean field calculations for nucleons, little is known about effective pairing interactions for hyperons. Based on the quark model, we propose a relationship between effective pairing interactions for hyperons and for nucleons; e.g., for Λs, the strength of the pairing interaction is 4/9 of that for nucleons. A separable pairing force of finite range which has been widely applied to describing pairing correlations in normal nuclei is used to investigate pairing effects in multi-Λ Ca, Sn and Pb hypernuclei.

Abstract:In this work, the effects of the pairing correlation on the properties of neutron drops N=6–50 trapped in a harmonic oscillator potential with ħω = 10 MeV are investigated by comparing the results given by the Skyrme Hartree-Fock and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theories with the density-dependent delta interaction (DDDI) pairing force. The results showed that the pairing correlation slightly made the neutron drops more bound, and increased the central neutron density, the spin-orbit and pseudo spin-orbit splittings. Thus, the pairing correlation must be accounted for to improve the Skyrme functional compared with the ab initio calculations. Furthermore, although the single-particle energy gaps with or without pairing were similar, the shell closures varied due to pair scattering. Here, the shell closures in neutron drops using the SkM* parameter set and DDDI pairing force were found at N=8, 16, and 32.

Abstract:Nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations (SRCs) are inevitable consequences of realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions. The corresponding SRC pairs, characterized by high relative momenta, have been verified experimentally to be important in finite nuclei. In this work, we study the impacts of nucleon-nucleon SRCs on the physical properties of neutron stars. Considering the small center-of-mass momenta of SRC pairs, new nucleon momentum distributions with high-momentum tails (HMTs) are proposed by extrapolating well-established experimental results of SRCs in finite nuclei to neutron star matter. HMTs with different shapes are adopted to estimate theoretical uncertainties. It is found that nucleon-nucleon SRCs generally stiffen the equation of state of neutron star matter and increase the maximum mass of neutron stars.

Abstract:For the first time, the tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory with pairing correlations has been formulated and implemented in a fully self-consistent and microscopic way to investigate the evolution of the spin axis and the pairing effects in rotating triaxial nuclei. The measured energy spectrum and transition probabilities for the Nd-135 yrast band are reproduced well without any ad hoc renormalization factors when pairing effects are taken into account. A transition from collective to chiral rotation has been demonstrated. It is found that pairing correlations introduce additional admixtures in the single-particle orbitals, and, thus, influence the structure of tilted axis rotating nuclei by reducing the magnitude of the proton and neutron angular momenta while merging their direction.

Abstract:The strongly isospin-dependent tensor force leads to short-range correlations (SRC) between neutron-proton (deuteron-like) pairs much stronger than those between proton-proton and neutron-neutron pairs. As a result of the short-range correlations, the single-nucleon momentum distribution develops a high-momentum tail above the Fermi surface. Because of the strongly isospin-dependent short-range correlations, in neutron-rich matter a higher fraction of protons will be depleted from its Fermi sea and populate above the Fermi surface compared to neutrons. This isospin-dependent nucleon momentum distribution may have effects on: (1) nucleon spectroscopic factors of rare isotopes, (2) the equation of state especially the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy, (3) the coexistence of a proton-skin in momentum space and a neutron-skin in coordinate space (i.e., protons move much faster than neutrons near the surface of heavy nuclei). In this talk, we discuss these features and their possible experimental manifestations. As an example, SRC effects on the nuclear symmetry energy are discussed in detail using a modified Gogny-Hartree-Fock (GHF) energy density functional (EDF) encapsulating the SRC-induced high momentum tail (HMT) in the single-nucleon momentum distribution.

Abstract:We investigated effects of pairing correlations on the neutron skin thickness and the symmetry energy of finite nuclei. In this calculation we used Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) method with Skyrme forces and effective pairing interactions. The results have been compared with available experimental data, Hartree-Fock (HF) results as well as the predictions by droplet model (DM). Finally, our discussion was extended to study of the pairing interaction in nuclear matter. Roles of isospin T = 0 pairing in the nuclear matter were also discussed.

Abstract:We study the properties of light neutron-rich exotic nuclei with relativistic-mean-field models. The nonlinear isoscalar-isovector term that is not constrained by the present data is considered. The ρNN tensor coupling is included. The data-to-data correlation between the neutron radius of 208Pb and that of light exotic oxygen, fluorine, and neon isotopes is enhanced by the inclusion of the ρNN tensor coupling subject to the 2s1/2 occupation of the outlayer neutrons. This enhancement is determined by the single-particle property rather than by the bulk-matter property. The role of the ρNN tensor coupling and the pairing correlation in reducing the model dependence of the neutron thickness in light exotic nuclei is investigated. The influence of the isoscalar-isovector term on halo neutrons, characteristic of the 2s1/2 occupation, is discussed.
