Abstract:A large effort is being made to develop nanosorbents with tunable surface chemistry for enhanced adsorption affinity and selectivity toward target organic contaminants. Heteroatom N-doped multiwall carbon nanotubes (N-MCNT) were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition of pyridine and were further investigated for the adsorptive removal of several aromatic chemicals varying in electronic donor and acceptor ability from aqueous solutions using a batch technique. Compared with commercial nondoped multiwall carbon nanotubes (MCNT), N-MCNT had similar specific surface area, morphology, and pore-size distribution but more hydrophilic surfaces and more surface defects due to the doping of graphitic and pyridinic N atoms. N-MCNT exhibited enhanced adsorption (2-10 folds) for the p-donor chemicals (2-naphthol and 1-naphthalmine) at pH similar to 6 but similar adsorption for the weak p-donor chemical (naphthalene) and even lower adsorption (up to a 2-fold change) for the p-acceptor chemical (1,3-dinitrobenzene). The enhanced adsorption of 2-naphthol and 1-naphthalmine to N-MCNT was mainly attributed to the favored p-p electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction between the p-donor adsorbate molecule and the polarized N-heterocyclic aromatic ring (p-acceptor) on N-MCNT. The proposed adsorption enhancement mechanisms were further tested through the pH effects on adsorption and the density function theory (DFT) calculation. The results show for the first time that the adsorptive interaction of p-donor aromatic compounds with carbon nanomaterials can be facilitated by N-doping.

Abstract:The adsorption of several organo-functional groups (-NH2, -CH3, -COOH, -CHO, and -OH) and alanine on Li decorated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are studied, based on the first-principle calculations. The calculated binding energies on Li-CNTs show obvious enhancement relative to the cases on pure CNTs, from about 0.3 eV to about 1.4 eV except -CH3, which is attributed to strong electrostatic dipole attraction between positive Li ion and polarized organo-functional groups by charge population analysis. It is interesting that the adsorption could be effectively adjusted under external electric field for the interaction with Li-group dipole. For the combinational contribution of charge redistribution and interaction of inherent electric dipole with external electric field, the adsorption of these organo-functional groups shows two discriminative variety trends. Finally, the adsorption of alanine including -NH2, -CH3, and -COOH groups is studied as an illustration to generalize above conclusions to organic macromolecule on Li decorated CNTs. An Efficient Biochar Adsorbent for CO2 Capture: Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study on the Promotion Mechanism of N-doping

Abstract:The N-doped carbon material is one of the most efficient adsorption materials in the field of carbon capture. Although many N-doped carbon materials have been prepared for CO2 adsorption in recent years, the promotion mechanism of N-doping has not been clearly proposed. In this study, a series of N-doped biochars were suc-cessfully prepared by a facile solvent-free method. Among them, the biochar prepared with corncob powder, K2CO3 and urea at 800 degrees C showed the highest adsorption capacity (5.69 mmol/g at 0 degrees C and 1 bar) and selectivity (38.24 at CO2/N2 = 10/90). The biochar also exhibited excellent thermal stability and cycle performance. Notable, correlation analysis showed that ultra-micropores were the decisive factor for CO2 adsorption at low temperatures; nevertheless, the effect of N-doping would gradually appear with the increase of adsorption temperature. By fitting the kinetics of CO2 adsorption, it was found experimentally that N-doping could increase the activation energy between biochar and CO2. Next, through constructing biochar models with different ni-trogen contents and different N-doping forms, it was found from theoretical calculation that N-doping could increase the adsorption energy between CO2 and biochar. Further theoretical analysis found that N-doping mainly enhanced the dispersion interaction between the biochar surface and CO2 to improve the adsorption performance, and the higher the nitrogen content, the more obvious the improvement. This work not only prepared a N-doped biochar with excellent CO2 adsorption performance from waste biomass, but also revealed the promotion mechanism of N-doping in detail by combining theoretical calculations with experiments.
Synergistic effect of pore generation and nitrogen doping on the enhanced CO 2 capture and selectivity of carbon nanofibers

Abstract:The porosity and heteroatom doping of carbon materials are crucial for their adsorption capacity and selectivity toward CO 2 . Herein, nitrogen-doped microporous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were prepared by carbonizing electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, using nitrogen-rich polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as porogen and nitrogen source simultaneously. The synergistic effect of pore generation and nitrogen doping improved the porosity and preserved a substantial nitrogen content in the CNFs. Compared to the nitrogen-free polyethylene glycol (PEG) porogen, the incorporation of PVP can facilitate nitrogen doping during the carbonization process. With an increasing amount of PVP addition, the specific surface area of the CNFs significantly expanded to 410 m 2 /g, maintaining a high nitrogen content of 10.32 wt%. The porosity and nitrogen functionalities (Pyridinic N and pyrrolic N) collaborated synergistically in determining CO 2 adsorption capacity, with elevated nitrogen content resulted in improved selectivity. The CNFs exhibited remarkable IAST CO 2 /N 2 (10:90) selectivity of 38 and cycling stability, demonstrating their potential for long-term practical applications. This work provides unique inspiration for the design of porous nanofibers with exceptional CO 2 adsorption capacity and selectivity.

Abstract:Noncovalent functionalization of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) in aqueous solution was achieved by means of pi-stacking of an anionic perylene derivative, through which carboxylate-functionalized BNNTs were prepared for the first time. Starting from the functionalized nanotubes, an innovative methodology was designed and demonstrated for the controlled near-surface carbon doping of BNNTs. As a result of such delicate doping, novel B-C-N/BN coaxial nanotubes have been fabricated, and their p-type semiconducting behaviors were elucidated through gate-dependent transport measurements.

Abstract:Adsorption of single-ringed N- and S-heterocyclic aromatics on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was examined to explore the potential of using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as drug carriers and environmental adsorbents. Adsorbates included pyrimidine, 2-aminopyrimidine, 4,6-diaminopyrimidine, thiophene, benzene and aniline. Adsorbents included pristine SWCNTs, oxidized SWCNTs, and nonporous graphite. Adsorption of N- and S-heterocyclic aromatics was significantly enhanced by non-hydrophobic interactions. Particularly, the –NH2-substituted compounds exhibited much stronger (up to 2 orders of magnitude) adsorption affinities to oxidized SWCNTs than benzene, even though they are much less hydrophobic. The π–π coupling or electron donor–acceptor (EDA) interactions are likely adsorption-enhancement mechanisms for all six compounds. The lone-pair electrons of the N heteroatoms and the –NH2 group can enable n–π EDA interactions with SWCNT surfaces. Lewis acid–base interactions are another significant adsorption-enhancement mechanism for the –NH2-substituted compounds (and possibly for pyrimidine) on SWCNTs. For the N-heterocyclic aromatics, adsorption affinity is highly dependent on the O-functionality of the SWCNT surface and on solution pH, due to the speciation reactions of both adsorbates and SWCNT surface O-functional groups, indicating that selective adsorption of N-heterocyclic aromatics is possible by combining the surface functionality of CNTs and solution chemistry.

Abstract:Doping heteroatoms in carbon nanotubes can substantially enhance the electronic polarizability of the carbon surface and thus may facilitate adsorptive interactions of organic contaminants. Here, the adsorption isotherms of three polar/ionizable emerging organic contaminants, bisphenol A. tylosin, and tetracycline from aqueous solutions to synthesized heteroatom nitrogen-doped multiwall carbon nanotubes (N-MCNT) were compared with those to commercial non-doped multiwall carbon nanotubes (MCNT) at pH similar to 6. N-MCNT exhibited much stronger adsorption (3-4 folds higher sorption distribution coefficients, K-d) towards the three adsorbates than MCNT. The hydroxyl group-substituted bisphenol A molecule is rich inn-electrons and thus interacts with the polarized pi-electron-depleted N-heterocyclic aromatic ring on N-MCNT via pi-pi electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction, whereas the protonated amino group and enone groups in the tylosin molecule are deficient in electrons and interact with the neighboring pi-electron-rich aromatic ring on N-MCNT via cation-n and n-n EDA interactions, respectively. The tetracycline molecule contains both electron-rich moiety (phenol ring) and electron-depleted moieties (protonated amino group and enone groups), which interact with the corresponding pi-nelectron-acceptor/donor sites on N-MCNT. The proposed adsorption mechanisms were tested by the effects of ionic strength (NaCl or CaCl2), co-present Cu2+ ion, and changing pH on adsorption, and further adsorption behavior of a model organic cation (tetraethylamine). These results indicate that enhanced adsorption of emerging organic contaminants to carbon nanotubes can be achieved by doping with heterocyclic nitrogen atoms to facilitate specific EDA interactions. Enhanced Electron Field Emission in B-doped Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Field emission properties of B-doped carbon nanotubes are investigated from both theoretical and experimental standpoints. Using tight-binding and ab initio calculations, it is observed that B-saturating tip edges of carbon nanotubes induce the presence of large peaks within the local density of states (LDOS) located in an energy region close to the Fermi level (Ef). These localized states suggest a field emission enhancement for the B-doped tubes. In addition, ab initio theoretical results indicate that the work function for B-doped tubes is 1.7 eV lower when compared to pure carbon-terminated nanotubes. Experimentally, it is found that B-doped tubes, which are produced by arc discharge techniques and contain B mainly at the tips, exhibit stable electron field emission at lower turn-on voltages (1.4 V/mum) when compared to pure single- and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (2.8 and 3.0 V/mum, respectively) measured under the same conditions. We strongly believe our results will bring new insights in the fabrication of stable field emission sources.
Effects of Element Doping and H2O Presence on CO2 Adsorption Using Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Abstract:The characteristics of CO2 adsorbing on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) under various conditions are key to its application in industries. In this study, h-BN is selected as the adsorbent for CO2 adsorption and carbon/nitrogen (C/N) is the doping element. By means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, adsorption structures, adsorption energies, distribution of electron clouds, transition state (TS) processes (free state -> adsorption state) and effects of H2O are used to explain adsorption mechanisms of CO2 on pure/doped h-BN. According to calculation results, with doping of C/N, the delocalized pi bond of h-BN is transformed and then CO2 adsorption on the specific site is enhanced. In the meantime, this study also reveals that h-BN should be treated as the tertiary amine in a way because H2O presence could obviously facilitate CO2 adsorption on pure/doped h-BN, consistent with existing studies. What is more, the study uncovers that the TS energy barrier of CO2 adsorption is another factor that affects adsorption strength. It is found that doping of C/N and H2O presence could reduce adsorption energy barriers and facilitate CO2 adsorption. The research results could provide valuable information about exploiting h-BN for massive CO2 adsorption in industrial situations.
Boron/Nitrogen Pairs Co-Doping in Metallic Carbon Nanotubes: A First-Principle Study

Abstract:By using the first-principles calculations, the electronic structure and quantum transport properties of metallic carbon nanotubes with B/N pairs co-doping have been investigated. It is shown that the total energies of metallic carbon nanotubes are sensitive to the doping sites of the B/N pairs. The energy gaps of the doped metallic carbon nanotubes decrease with decreasing the concentration of the B/N pair not only along the tube axis but also around the tube. Moreover, the I-V characteristics and transmissions of the doped tubes are studied. Our results reveal that the conducting ability of the doped tube decreases with increasing the concentrations of the B/N pairs due to symmetry breaking of the system. This fact opens a new way to modulate band structures of metallic carbon nanotubes by doping B/N pair with suitable concentration and the novel characteristics are potentially useful in future applications

Abstract:The adsorption properties of different Carbon allotropes (i.e., graphene, γ-graphyne, Mobius graphene, and R-graphyne) and their corresponding Boron (N) and Nitrogen (N) incorporated BCN nanostructures toward carbon monoxide (CO) gas are studied via density functional theory calculation. All the adsorbents demonstrated negative formation energies and real frequencies, i.e., can be synthesized and have dynamical stability. The adsorption energies have increased due to B and N incorporation, although still comparatively low for practical application. The highest adsorption energy with suitable recovery time is observed for the Mobius BCN structure, about −0.112 eV and 77.8 ps, respectively. Very nominal charge transfer is observed via Mulliken charge distribution and electrostatic potential map analysis. The changes in energy gap and electrical conductivity are observed due to CO adsorption.

Abstract:Previously, Ren et al. [Chem. Phys. 518, 69-73, 2019] reported the failure of Boron-Nitrogen (B-N) co-doping as inter B-N bond in T-carbon. In present work, a B-N atom pair is introduced in T-carbon as p-n co-dopant to substitute two carbon atoms in the same carbon tetrahedron and form an intra B-N bond. The stability of this doping system is verified from energy, lattice dynamic, and thermodynamic aspects. According to our B3PW calculations, B-N impurities in this situation can reduce the band gap of T-carbon from 2.95 eV to 2.55 eV, making this material to be a promising photocatalyst. Through the study of its transport properties, we can also conclude that B-N co-doping cannot improve the thermoelectric performance of T-carbon.

Abstract:Understanding adsorptive interactions between organic contaminants and carbon nanotubes is critical to both the environmental application of carbon nanotubes as special adsorbents and the assessment of the potential impact of carbon nanotubes on the fate and transport of organic contaminants in the environment. The adsorption of organic compounds with varied physical-chemical properties (hydrophobicity, polarity, electron polarizability, and size) to one single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) and two multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) was evaluated. For a given carbon nanotube, the adsorption affinity correlated poorly with hydrophobicity but increased in the order of nonpolar aliphatic < nonpolar aromatics < nitroaromatics, and within the group of nitroaromatics, the adsorption affinity increased with the number of nitrofunctional groups. We propose that the strong adsorptive interaction between carbon nanotubes and nitroaromatics was due to the pi - pi electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction between nitroaromatic molecules (electron acceptors) and the highly polarizable graphene sheets (electron donors) of carbon nanotubes. Additionally, we attribute the stronger adsorption of nonpolar aromatics compared to that of nonpolar aliphatics to the pi-electron coupling between the flat surfaces of both aromatic molecules and carbon nanotubes. For tetra chlorobenzene, the bulkiest adsorbate, adsorption affinity (on a unit surface area basis) to the SWNT was much stronger than to the two MWNTs, indicating a probable molecular sieving effect.
Selective adsorption of first-row atoms on boron nitride nanotubes: the effect of localized states

Abstract:First-principles calculations reveal that the adsorption of representative first-row atoms with different electronegativity, such as lithium (Li), carbon (C) and fluorine (F), on zigzag single-walled boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) exhibits surprising selectivity. The adsorption energy and adsorption site are dependent upon the chemical activity of adsorbate with respect to the B and N atoms in the host tube. In detail, the F atom prefers to be adsorbed on the top of the B atom, the C atom is energetically favorable to stay on the bridge site which is perpendicular to the tube-axis, and the Li atom hardly adheres to the tube (an endothermal reaction). The adsorption behavior of these three types of elements on BNNTs is elucidated based on the frontier molecular orbital theory. In addition, the mechanism of modification of electronic structures of BNNTs by adsorption is probed, and a feasible approach is proposed to tailor the electronic properties of BNNTs.

Effects of Hole Doping on Selectivity of Naphthalene Towards Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Using first principle calculations, we find that hole doping remarkably enhances adsorption strength of naphthalene on single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The enhancement in adsorption strength is more significant for the larger-sized SWNTs, and the adsorption of naphthalene on the larger-sized (10,0) SWNTs becomes stronger than that on the smaller-sized (5,5) SWNTs at a higher doping level. However, the enhancement in adsorption strength appears insensitive to the electronic structure of SWNTs. For similar-sized SWNTs, hole doping does not reverse the selective adsorption of naphthalene towards metallic SWNTs versus their semiconducting counterparts. This is in sharp contrast to NH2CH3 adsorption, where hole doping can reverse the selectivity of NH2CH3 towards metallic SWNTs versus similar-sized semiconducting SWNTs.
Nitrogen‐Doped Single‐Walled Carbon Nanotubes Grown on Substrates: Evidence for Framework Doping and Their Enhanced Properties

Abstract:Nitrogen‐doped single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are synthesized directly on silicon and quartz substrates through a normal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Thermogravimetry mass spectrometry measurements and Raman spectroscopy give firm evidence for framework nitrogen doping. X‐ray‐photoelectron‐spectroscopy analysis further obtains the bonding style of the nitrogen atoms in the carbon framework. The nitrogen doping significantly changes the properties of the SWCNTs. All of the tubes behave like metallic tubes in field‐effect transistors. The doped nitrogen atoms introduce a stronger affinity for the SWCNTs to metal nanoparticles. Compared with pristine SWCNTs, the nitrogen‐doped tubes show enhanced sensitivity and selectivity for electrochemical detection of some electrophilic species including O2, H2O2, and Fe3+. They also present improved electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction. These unique properties of the nitrogen‐doped SWCNTs endow them with important potential applications in various fields.

Abstract:We have investigated the electronic structures of C-doped (9,0) boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and hydrogen-decorated C-doped (9,0) BNNTs using density functional theory (DFT). It is found that the doping effect of C-doped BNNTs can be compensated by adsorption of H atom on the C sites. The adsorption energies for hydrogen atoms on different adsorption sites on BNNTs and C-doped BNNTs are obtained by using ONIOM method. The results indicate that the most favorable configuration of the adsorption structures is a hydrogen atom adsorbed on the C site of C-doped BNNT.

Abstract:Two kinds of boron and nitrogen co-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dominated by bonded or separated B and N are intentionally prepared, which present distinct oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performances. The experimental and theoretical results indicate that the bonded case cannot, while the separated one can, turn the inert CNTs into ORR electrocatalysts. This progress demonstrates the crucial role of the doping microstructure on ORR performance, which is of significance in exploring the advanced C-based metal-free electrocatalysts.

Abstract:We have studied non-covalent functionalization of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) with benzene molecule and with seven other different heterocyclic aromatic rings (furan, thiophene, pyrrole, pyridine, pyrazine, pyrimidine, and pyridazine, respectively). A hybrid density functional theory (DFT) method with the inclusion of dispersion correction is employed. The structural and electronic properties of the functionalized BNNTs are obtained. The DFT calculation shows that upon adsorption to the BNNT, the center of aromatic rings tend to locate on top of the nitrogen site. The trend of adsorption energy for the aromatic rings on the BNNTs shows marked dependence on different intermolecular interactions, including the dispersion interaction (area of the delocalized p bond), the dipole-dipole interaction (polarization), and the electrostatic repulsion (lone pair electrons). The DFT calculation also shows that non-covalent functionalization of BNNTs with aromatic rings can give rise to new impurity states within the band gap of pristine BNNTs, suggesting possible carrier doping of BNNTs via selective adsorption of aromatic rings.
