Abstract:The medium-to-high-temperature latent heat storage (M-HLHS) system, an advanced energy storage solution, achieves efficient thermal energy storage and release through phase-change heat storage. This study conducts comprehensive analyses of the temperature distribution, phase-change process, stress distribution, and thermodynamic performance of the M-HLHS system during charging. Additionally, the impacts of preheating and the inlet temperature and velocity of the heat transfer fluid on system performance are explored. Experimental results determined the phase-change peak temperature of the phase-change material (PCM) to be 220.75 degrees C. A numerical model, considering the thermal expansion of PCM, is constructed to couple fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and solid mechanics calculations. The study reveals that the heating rates of four different heat exchange fins surrounding PCM exceed 0.44 degrees C/min. Stress concentrations are more pronounced at the connection points and sides of the container, with the maximum stress at the connection point reaching 347.61 MPa. Near the helical finned heat exchanger, the PCM phase-change rate is faster, leading to more significant stress concentrations. Furthermore, increasing the preheating temperature by 30 degrees C could reduce contact surface stress by 73.38 MPa. The inlet velocity has the most significant impact on the heat transfer coefficient, with a maximum increase of 81.1 %. This paper provides valuable insights into the development, thermal performance evaluation, and safe operation of the M-HLHS system in medium-to-high-temperature applications.
