Abstract:We demonstrate the feasibility of a 16 × 3.75 Gb/s (60 Gb/s aggregate) Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-code division multiple access passive optical network for next-generation access applications. 3.75 Gb/s PON channel transmission over 25 km single-mode fiber shows 0.1 dB dispersion and 0.9 dB crosstalk penalties. Advantages of the system include high capacity, enhanced spectral efficiency, coding gain, and networking functions such as increased security and single-wavelength operation.

Abstract:We propose a spectral efficient radio over wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) system by combining optical polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and wireless multiple input multiple output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing techniques. In our experiment, a training-based zero forcing (ZF) channel estimation algorithm is designed to compensate the polarization rotation and wireless multipath fading. A 797 Mb/s net data rate QPSK-OFDM signal with error free (<1 × 10(5)) performance and a 1.59 Gb/s net data rate 16QAM-OFDM signal with BER performance of 1.2 × 10(2) are achieved after transmission of 22.8 km single mode fiber followed by 3 m and 1 m air distances, respectively.

Abstract:We report on experimental demonstration of 2x2 MIMO-OFDM 5.6-GHz radio over fiber signaling over 20 km WDM-PON with directly modulated (DM) VCSELs for femtocells application. MIMO-OFDM algorithms effectively compensate for impairments in the wireless link. Error-free signal demodulation of 64 subcarrier 4-QAM signals modulated at 198.5 Mb/s net data rate is achieved after fiber and 2 m indoor wireless transmission. We report BER of 7x10(-3) at the receiver for 16-QAM signals modulated at 397 Mb/s after 1 m of wireless transmission. Performance dependence on different wireless transmission path lengths, antenna separation, and number of subcarriers have been investigated.

Abstract:We demonstrate for the first time to the best of our knowledge an analogue orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based electrical code division multiplexing access (ECDMA) passive optical network (PON) for next generation access applications. Advantages of the system include low cost, high capacity, and enhanced spectral efficiency. A proof-of-principle 16 QAM OFDM ECDMA PON downlink experiment is used to show the transmission of an aggregate data rate of 24.8 Gb/s within an eight-user system. Transmission is achieved over 25 km of single-mode telecommunications fiber (SMF) with negligible dispersion and crosstalk penalties.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel WDM-ROF-PON architecture based on 16QAM-OFDM modulation for bidirectional access networks is proposed and demonstrated. We theoretically investigate the operating principle of the system, in our simulation, the intensity modulation of 10Gb/s 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (16-QAM) orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signals are employed for downlink and the demodulated base-band signals are demonstrated, and the optical carrier is reused for uplink. Both the downstream and upstream signals have been transmitted over 40-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF-28) without optical dispersion compensation. Our theoretical analysis and numerical simulation results show the WDM-ROF-PON architecture will be a promising candidate in next generation optical networks.

Abstract:Increasing the serial bitrate to 25-Gb/s per channel as well as coexisting with the same optical distribution network of the 10G-ethernet passive optical network (EPON) is challenging. The bandwidth limitation and the reduced dispersion tolerance at high date rate make it much more difficult to achieve higher loss budget. In this paper, we have first shown a demonstration of a symmetric 4 × 25-Gb/s time-wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network system based on nonreturn-to-zero on-off-keying format supporting 0–20 km reach in O-band. 10G-class directly modulated lasers (DMLs) are employed to serve as both upstream and downstream transmitters owing to the low cost and the frequency chirp induced by DML can be used for bandwidth equalization. Instead of using digital signal processing, the chirp management and frequency equalization are simultaneously realized in optical domain through our proposed dispersion supported equalization technique. By employing a spool of dispersion-shifted fiber in optical line terminal (OLT), a single device can be used to simultaneously equalize the frequency response of multiple downstream and upstream channels. Then, we further use a semiconductor optical amplifier as a booster and preamplifier at the OLT for downstream and upstream, respectively. A power budget of 26 and 32 dB with 0–20 km reach of standard single mode fiber for downstream and upstream transmission at 1310 nm is obtained. The experimental results shown in this paper reveal that our proposed cost-effective scheme would be a promising candidate for the next generation 100G-EPON.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a distance-adaptive bandwidth allocation scheme to realize high-capacity long-reach orthogonal frequency division multiple access passive optical network (OFDMA PON) with cost-effective electro-absorption modulator (EAM). In our scheme, the subcarriers in downstream OFDM signal are properly allocated to the optical network units (ONUs) with different fiber transmission lengths. By this means, the detrimental influence of power fading induced by dispersion and chirp can be avoided, thus all OFDM subcarriers can be modulated with high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) format, leading to a high transmission capacity. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed, in which three ONUs with transmission distances of 25, 50, and 100 km are assigned with different subcarriers, respectively. By using distance-adaptive bandwidth allocation technique, an OFDM signal of 34.5 Gb/s is successfully delivered to the ONUs with a bit error ratio (BER) lower than 2 × 10(-3).

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel WDM-CAP-PON based on optical single-side band (OSSB) multi-level multi-band carrier-less amplitude and phase modulation (MM-CAP). To enable high-speed transmission with simplified optical network unit (ONU)-side digital signal processing, 4-level 5 sub-bands CAP-16 is used here, which is generated by the digital to analogue converter (DAC). Optical single-side band (OSSB) technology is applied to extend the transmission distance against the spectrum fading effect. As a proof of concept, the experiment successfully demonstrates 11 WDM channels, 55 sub-bands, for 55 users with 9.3-Gb/s per user (after removing 7% overhead for forward error correction (FEC)) in the downstream over 40-km SMF.

Abstract:We introduce a novel architecture for next generation passive optical network (PON) base on the Single-carrier Frequency Division Multiple Address (SC-FDMA) technique. Both downstream and upstream SCFDMA-PON transmissions (5 Gb/s total, 2.5 Gb/s for each user) are experimentally demonstrated over 22.2 km standard single mode fiber and an additional simulated 1:32 optical splitter. We also test the tolerance range of the synchronization error and prove it matches the cyclic prefix period in our scheme, which means the packet transmission accuracy from different optical network units can be relaxed in the upstream.

Abstract:The downlink transmission of a 1 Gb/s × 15-user code-division multiplexing (CDM) over wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) based on electrical spatial coding and subcarrier multiplexing is experimentally demonstrated. Two wavelengths with 100-GHz spacing are used to carry the 15 spatial encoded subcarriers generated by an arbitrary waveform generator. Our results show that error-free operation can be achieved after 20-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) transmission when 15 simultaneous users are present assuming that forward-error correction coding is used.

Abstract:We first experimentally demonstrate the ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (UD-WDM-PON) system at 9.95 Gb/s per wavelength on a 12.5-GHz grid, adopting digital pre-equalization considering narrow-band optical filtering effect at the transmitter. Eight optical carriers with 12.5-GHz frequency spacing carry 9.95-Gb/s digital pre-equalized binary signals (on-off keying) and are optically filtered. 25- and 45-km single-mode fiber (SMF)-28 downlink transmissions are experimentally demonstrated. The bit-error ratio for each of the eight channels is less than 1.0 x 10(-9) after transmission over 25-km SMF-28.

Abstract:In this letter, a WDM-OFDM-PON architecture using LDPC code is brought up to increase transmission range and system performance. In optical line terminal (OLT), LDPC-coded OFDM signal at 10-Gb/s is transmitted as downstream. At each optical network unit (ONU), the optical OFDM signal is demodulated with direct detection, and on-off keying date at 2.5-Gb/s is returned as upstream. Simulation results show that the transmission distance could exceed 20-km with negligible penalty.

Abstract:A novel scheme to generate coherent 21 optical subcarriers with fixed frequency of 25 GHz is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Using these optical subcarriers, we have successfully generated 1.96 Tb/s (21 × 100 Gb/s) polarization-multiplexing optical orthogonal frequency multiplexed (PM-OFDM) polarization multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) optical superchannel signal with optical signal-noise ratio of each subchannel larger than 30 dB (0.1-nm bandwidth). We have transmitted this 1.96-Tb/s optical OFDM superchannel over 3200-km SMF-28 with amplification span of 80 km with erbium-doped fiber amplifier-only.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a full-duplex integrated passive optical network (PON) and indoor optical wireless communication (OWC) system. For the PON part, an external cavity laser (ECL) and a directly modulated laser (DML) are used as optical sources for downlink and uplink, respectively. The OWC subsystem utilizes a visible light-emitting diode (LED) for downlink and an infrared LED (IR-LED) for uplink transmission. To enable high spectral efficiency (SE), high-speed transmission, and flexible multiple access with simplified optical network unit (ONU)-side digital signal processing (DSP), multilevel, multiband quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and hybrid 128/64/16 Nyquist single-carrier frequency domain equalization (N-SC-FDE) modulation are implemented in this paper. In terms of 62.5 MHz OWC N-SC-FDE signals, the system successfully delivered a further 140 cm indoor distance after transmitting over a span of 25 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) together with three subbands of 250 MHz PON signals. As a proof of concept, an integrated system of symmetrical full-duplex 5 Gb/s PON and 250 Mb/s OWC at each direction for three wired users and one wireless user is successfully achieved. The measured bit error ratios (BERs) for each user are all smaller than the 7% pre-forward-error-correction (pre-FEC) limit of 3.8 x 10(-3), which shows the promising potential and feasibility of this proposal to extend multiple services from metro areas to suburban areas.
