Abstract:Crushed corn stalk was subjected to anaerobic digestion in semi-continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR) at mesophilic conditions (35 +/- 1) degrees C. Different organic loading rate (OLR) (2.15 kg volatile solids (VS)/(m(3).d) and 2.88 kg VS/(m(3).d)) and two kinds of additives (urea and inorganic salt soil) were used to investigate the effects on anaerobic digestion of corn stalk. Three different treatments (R1-no additive, R2-adding urea, R3-adding inorganic salt soil) were set up. At OLR of 2.15 kg VS/(m(3).d), average daily biogas production of three reactors ranges from 275 to 290 mL/g VS. At OLR of 2.88 kg VS/(m(3).d), due to the total volatile fatty acids (VFAs) build-up (13.8 g/L), R1 obtained the lowest biogas production, leading to the system failure. Biogas production of R2 and R3 was stable and estimated to be 423.46 and 398.49 mL/g VS, respectively. Compared with low OLR, biogas production of R2 and R3 at higher OLR increased 55.07%, 37.72% and methane yield increased 36.20%, 24.48%, respectively. The results indicated that higher OLR could result in acidification and system failure in anaerobic digestion process. However, adding additives (urea and inorganic salt soil) could improve system stability and help alleviating acidification. The recommended OLR for the mesophilic digestion of corn stalk with additive was 2.88 kg VS/(m(3).d). And the additive containing nitrogen, like urea, was more suitable for corn stalk.
