Abstract:We compare the Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) and the thermal light ghost imaging schemes in both near and far fields. Both effects arise as a result of the intensity fluctuations of the thermal light and we find that the essential physics behind the two effects is the same. The difference however is that, in the ghost imaging, large number of bits information of an object needs to be treated together, whereas, in the HBT, there is only one bit information required to be obtained. In the HBT experiment far field is used for the purpose of easy detection, while in the ghost image experiment near (or not far) field is used for good quality image.

Abstract:Ghost imaging is an indirect system that allows the imaging of an object without directly seeing the object. The speckle pattern that contains the information about light and objects has increasingly become a popular topic in pseudothermal light ghost imaging. However, existing research still has encountered problems of poor imaging quality and slow sampling speeds. We propose a ghost imaging method based on N-order speckle patterns to recover the object (NSGI). The N-order speckle patterns combine N independent laser speckles individually produced by passing an expanded and collimated He-Ne laser through a digital micro-mirror device (DMD). The sampling frequency can be improved by controlling the trigger signals of different DMDs. The results of the simulation and experiment have verified that our method can increase sampling speed and reconstruction accuracy. In addition, NSGI can be applied to more applications by designing multiple independent speckles with different properties. (C) 2018 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

Abstract:As a new imaging mechanism, ghost imaging has become a hot area of research in optical imaging field. In this paper, the effect of intensity correlation order on lensless ghost imaging system is investigated. We demonstrate that the image quality of Nth-order ghost imaging and Nth-order ghost imaging with background subtraction can be affected by the different intensity correlation order of test light and reference both theoretically and experimentally. The result indicates that the image quality will not be certainly increased with the increasing of the intensity correlation order, and here will be very useful for choosing an appropriate intensity correlation order in practice.

Abstract:In order to investigate the impact of light field high-order correlation on the tangential moving target ghost imaging,high order background-subtracted ghost imaging theory can be applied.Some numerical simulations and experiments are carried out,and the relevant simulated images are obtained.In this study of tangential moving targets ghost imaging based on the high-order background-subtracted ghost imaging theory,the results show that the high-order correlation of the light field increases the background fluctuation noise when the reference beam order increases,and the quality of image reconstruction deteriorates.Moreover,the increase of the signal beam order has little effect on the image quality.So the best quality can be obtained by the lowest-order ghost imaging.

Abstract:High visibility temporal ghost imaging with classical light is possible when superbunching pseudothermal light is employed. In the numerical simulation, the visibility of temporal ghost imaging with pseudothermal light equaling ($4.7\pm 0.2$)\% can be increased to ($75\pm 8$)\% in the same scheme with superbunching pseudothermal light. The reasons for the difference in visibility and quality of the retrieved images in different situations are discussed in detail. It is concluded that high visibility and high quality temporal ghost image can be obtained by collecting large enough number of data points. The results are helpful to understand the difference between ghost imaging with classical light and entangled photon pairs. The superbunching pseudothermal light can be employed to improve the image quality in ghost imaging applications.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a novel ghost imaging experiment utilizing a classical light source,capable of resolving objects with a high visibility.The experimental results show that our scheme can indeed realize ghost imaging with high visibility for a relatively complicated object composed of three near-ellipse-shaped holes with different dimensions.In our experiment,the largest hole is ~36 times of the smallest one in area.Each of the three holes exhibits high-visibility in excess of 80%.The high visibility and high spatial-resolution advantages of this technique could have applications in remote sensing.

Abstract:Ghost imaging functions achieved by means of the spatial correlations between two photons is a new modality in imaging systems. With a small number of photons, ghost imaging is usually realized based on the position correlation of photon pairs produced from the spontaneous parametric down-conversion process. Here we demonstrate a way to realize multi-path ghost imaging by introducing an additional time correlation. Different delays of paths will induce the shift of the coincidence peak, which carries the information about objects. By choosing the suitable coincidence window, we obtain images of three objects simultaneously, with a visibility of 87.2%. This method provides insights and techniques into multi-parameter ghost imaging. It can be applied to other correlated imaging systems, for example, quantum spiral imaging.

Abstract: A simple and robust experiment demonstrating computational ghost imaging with structured illumination and a single-pixel detector has been performed. Our experimental setup utilizes a general computer for generating pseudo-randomly patterns on the liquid crystal display screen to illuminate a partially-transmissive object. With an incoherent light source, this object is imaged. The effects of light source, light path, and the number of measurements on the reconstruction quality of the object are discussed both theoretically and experimentally. The realization of computational ghost imaging with computer liquid crystal display is a further setup toward the practical application of ghost imaging with ordinary incoherent light.

Abstract:We report a thermal-light “ghost” imaging without conventional intensity correlation calculation. Typically, ghost imaging is achieved with correlation calculation not only for entangled photons but also for thermal-light sources. In this paper, we set only thresholds for the bucket detector and the reference detector, and count the realizations when their signals are above or below the thresholds simultaneously. The distribution of the counts shows the image of our target. With proper threshold restrictions on the two detectors, we demonstrate both positive and negative images. Our work broadens the ghost-imaging reconstruction method, and provides a potential approach to ghost imaging with binary detectors in low-light or photon-counting regimes and a broader spectrum.

Abstract:Ghost imaging enables the imaging of an object using intensity correlations between a single-pixel detector placed behind the object and a camera that records light that did not interact with the object. The object and the camera are often placed at conjugate planes to ensure correlated illumination patterns. Here, we show how the combined effect of optical reciprocity and the memory effect in a random medium gives rise to correlations between two beams that traverse the random medium in opposite directions. Using these correlations, we demonstrate a ghost imaging scheme in which the object and camera are placed at opposite ends of the random medium and illuminated by counter-propagating beams that can potentially be emitted by two different sources.

Abstract:In traditional ghost imaging, the entangled photon pairs produced from the spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) process are used. There is an intrinsic disadvantage that the utilization efficiency of the photon pairs is very low. Inasmuch as all the correlated photon pairs produced by the degenerate SPDC process can be used to record the image of an object, the ghost imaging scheme we present here has a higher utilization efficiency of the photon pairs. We also investigate the robustness of our experimental scheme. The experimental results show that, no matter whether the photon-pair source is two light cones or two beam-like spots, the clear image of the object can be obtained. The slight rotation of the nonlinear crystal has no influence on the imaging quality. Our experimental results also demonstrate that when the part of the photon-pair source in the signal path or the idler path is blocked by unwanted things, the clear ghost image of the object can still be recorded.

Abstract:Based on optical correlations, ghost imaging is usually reconstructed by computer algorithm from the acquired data. We here proposed an alternatively high contrast naked-eye ghost imaging scheme which avoids computer algorithm processing. Instead, the proposed scheme uses a photoelectric feedback loop to realize the multiplication process of traditional ghost imaging. Meanwhile, it exploits the vision persistence effect to implement integral process and to generate negative images observed by naked eyes. To realize high contrast naked-eye ghost imaging, a special pattern-scanning architecture on a low-speed light-modulation mask is designed, which enables high-resolution imaging with lower-order Hadamard vectors and boosts the imaging speed as well. Moreover, two kinds of feedback circuits, the digital circuit and the analog circuit, are presented respectively, which can achieve high-speed feedback operation on the light intensity. With this approach, we demonstrate high-contrast real-time imaging for moving objects.

Abstract:Ghost imaging (GI) is a potential imaging technique that reconstructs the target scene from its correlated measurements with a sequential of patterns. Restricted by the multi-shot principle, GI usually requires long acquisition time and is limited in observation of dynamic scenes. To handle this problem, this paper proposes a single-shot thermal ghost imaging scheme via wavelength-division multiplexing technique. Specifically, we generate thousands of patterns simultaneously by modulating a broadband light source with a wavelength dependent diffuser. These patterns carry the scene's spatial information and then the correlated measurements are coupled into a spectrometer for the final reconstruction. This technique accelerates the ghost imaging speed significantly and promotes the applications in dynamic ghost imaging.

Abstract:Recently, ghost imaging has been attracting attentions because its mechanism would lead to many applications inaccessible to conventional imaging methods. However, it is challenging for high contrast and high resolution imaging, due to its low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the demand of high sampling rate in detection. To circumvent these challenges, we here propose a ghost imaging scheme that exploits Haar wavelets as illuminating patterns with a bi-frequency light projecting system and frequency-selecting single-pixel detectors. This method provides a theoretically 100% image contrast and high detection SNR, which reduces the requirement of high dynamic range of detectors, enabling high resolution ghost imaging. Moreover, it can highly reduce the sampling rate (far below Nyquist limit) for a sparse object by adaptively abandoning unnecessary patterns during the measurement. These characteristics are experimentally verified with a resolution of 512 times 512 and a sampling rate lower than 5%. A high-resolution (1000 times 1000 times 1000) 3D reconstruction of an object is also achieved from multi-angle images.

Abstract:Lensless ghost imaging has attracted much interest in recent years due to its profound physics and potential applications. In this paper we report studies of the robust properties of the lensless ghost imaging system with a pseudo-thermal light source in a strongly scattering medium. The effects of the positions of the strong medium on the ghost imaging are investigated. In the lensless ghost imaging system, a pseudo-thermal light is split into two correlated beams by a beam splitter. One beam goes to a charge-coupled detector camera, labeled as CCD2. The other beam goes to an object and then is collected in another charge-coupled detector camera, labeled as CCD1, which serves as a bucket detector. When the strong medium, a pane of ground glass disk, is placed between the object and CCD1, the bucket detector, the quality of ghost imaging is barely affected and a good image could still be obtained. The quality of the ghost imaging can also be maintained, even when the ground glass is rotating, which is the strongest scattering medium so far. However, when the strongly scattering medium is present in the optical path from the light source to CCD2 or the object, the lensless ghost imaging system hardly retrieves the image of the object. A theoretical analysis in terms of the second-order correlation function is also provided.

Abstract:Different from conventional imaging methods, which are based on the first-order field correlation, ghost imaging (GI) obtains the image information through high-order mutual-correlation of light fields from two paths with an object appearing in only one path. As a new optical imaging technology, GI not only provides us new capabilities beyond the conventional imaging methods, but also gives out a new viewpoint of imaging physical mechanism. It may be applied to many potential applications, such as remote sensing, snap-shot spectral imaging, thermal X-ray diffraction imaging and imaging through scattering media. In this paper, we reviewed mainly our research work of ghost imaging via sparsity constraints (GISC) and discussed the application and theory prospect of GISC concisely.
Forming images using conditioned partial measurements from reference arm in ghost imaging

Abstract:A recent thermal ghost imaging experiment by Wu's group constructed positive and negative images using a novel algorithm. This algorithm allows to form the images with use of partial measurements from the reference arm, even which never passes through the object, conditioned on the object arm. In this paper, we present a simple theory which explains the experimental observation, and provides an in-depth understanding of conventional ghost imaging. In particular, we theoretically show that the visibility of formed images through such an algorithm is not bounded by the standard value 1/3. In fact, it can ideally grow up to unity (with reduced imaging quality). Thus, the algorithm described here not only offers an alternative way to decode spatial correlation of thermal light, but also mimics a "bandpass filter" to remove the constant background such that the visibility or imaging contrast is improved. We further show that conditioned on one still object present in the test arm, it is possible to construct its image by sampling the available reference data.

Abstract:Techniques based on classical and quantum correlations in light beams, such as ghost imaging, allow us to overcome many limitations of conventional imaging and sensing protocols. Despite their advantages, applications of such techniques are often limited in practical scenarios where the position and the longitudinal extension of the target object are unknown. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an imaging technique, named light-field ghost imaging, that exploits light correlations and light-field imaging principles to enable going beyond the limitations of ghost imaging in a wide range of applications.
