Abstract:The recently proposed fluorescence emission difference (FED) microscopy has been demonstrated to be capable of breaking the diffraction barrier, which restricts the spatial resolution of far-field fluorescence microscopy. In this paper, we report a novel high-speed FED system that can realize real-time super-resolution imaging. By replacing the conventional nanopositioning stage with a galvo mirror, the temporal resolution of FED is improved to nearly one frame per second, which is 100 times faster than that of best existing FED, while the system maintains a super-high spatial resolution of 150 nm, which is far beyond the diffraction barrier. Therefore, the high-speed FED is suitable for large-area observations while avoiding photobleaching. Detailed theoretical analysis, simulations, and experimental real-time resolution tests on 100 nm nanoparticles and biological cells are reported.
In-fibre Diffraction Grating Enables High-Efficiency Optical Wireless Communication and Time Stretch Imaging

Abstract:Optical diffraction elements (ODEs) are key components for innovative applications based on spectral encoding. Two most recent examples are wavelength-controlled laser beam steering for optical wireless communication and wavelength-to-space mapping for photonic time stretch imaging. Most commonly used ODEs are free-space ruled or holographic di?raction gratings, which however suffer from some inherent drawbacks, such as bulky construction, limited diffraction efficiency (up to 75%) due to the inherent zeroth-order reflection, and high coupling loss between free-space diffraction gratings and optical fibres in the system. In this paper, we report the use of a 45° tilted fiber grating (TFG) as a highly efficient, low cost and compact in-fiber diffractive device. Its superior performance in both passive infrared laser beam steering for optical wireless transmission and ultrafast photonic time-stretch imaging is presented with experimental demonstrations. Compared to conventional free-space diffractive devices, the 45° TFG provides significant advantages of high diffraction efficiency (>95%), compactness, low cost and inherent fiber-compatibility and holds great promise in spectral encoded applications.
Broadband fiber-optical parametric amplification for ultrafast time-stretch imaging at 1.0 μm

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband all-fiber-optical parametric amplifier for ultrafast time-stretch imaging at 1.0 μm, featured by its compact design, alignment-free, high efficiency, and flexible gain spectrum through fiber nonlinearity- and dispersion-engineering: specifically on a dispersion-stabilized photonic-crystal fiber (PCF) to achieve a net gain over 20 THz (75 nm) and a highest gain of ~6000 (37.5 dB). Another unique feature of the parametric amplifier, over other optical amplifiers, is the coherent generation of a synchronized signal replica (called idler) that can be exploited to offer an extra 3-dB gain by optically superposing the signal and idler. It further enhances signal contrast and temporal stability. For proof-of-concept purpose, ultrahigh speed and diffraction-limited time-stretch microscopy is demonstrated with a single-shot line-scan rate of 13 MHz based on the dual-band (signal and idler) detection. Our scheme can be extended to other established bioimaging modalities, such as optical coherence tomography, near infrared fluorescence, and photoacoustic imaging, where weak signal detection at high speed is required.
A Fiber-Compatible Spectrally Encoded Imaging System Using a 45° Tilted Fiber Grating

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate, for the first time to our best knowledge, the use of a 45 degrees tilted fiber grating (TFG) as an in-fiber lateral diffraction element in an efficient and fiber-compatible spectrally encoded imaging (SEI) system. Under proper polarization control, the TFG has significantly enhanced diffraction efficiency (93.5%) due to strong tilted reflection. Our conceptually new fiber-topics-based design eliminates the need for bulky and lossy free-space diffraction gratings, significantly reduces the volume and cost of the imaging system, improves energy efficiency, and increases system stability. As a proof-of-principle experiment, we use the proposed system to perform an one dimensional (1D) line scan imaging of a customer-designed three-slot sample and the results show that the constructed image matches well with the actual sample. The angular dispersion of the 45 degrees TFG is measured to be 0.054 degrees/nm and the lateral resolution of the SEI system is measured to be 28 mu m in our experiment.

Abstract:In this paper, compressive sensing based high-speed time-stretch optical microscopy for two-dimensional (2D) image acquisition is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. A section of dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) is used to perform wavelength-to-time conversion and then ultrafast spectral shaping of broadband optical pulses can be achieved via high-speed intensity modulation. A 2D spatial disperser comprising a pair of orthogonally oriented dispersers is employed to produce spatially structured illumination for 2D image acquisition and a section of single mode fiber (SMF) is utilized for pulse compression in the optical domain. In our scheme, a 1.2-GHz photodetector and a 50-MHz analog-to-digital converter (ADC) are used to acquire the energy of the compressed pulses. Image reconstructions are demonstrated at a frame rate of 500 kHz and a sixteen-fold image compression is achieved in our proof-of-concept demonstration.

Abstract:Serial time-encoded amplified microscopy can achieve ultrafast imaging speed within varied dynamic regimes. However, it has two challenges: the high-throughput data issue and low-efficiency diffraction issue. Here, we report a compact and highly efficient ultrafast optical imaging system based on compressive sensing and in-fiber grating. Our proposal is confirmed by the proof-of-principle experiment and obtains a minimum data compression ratio of 5% with a continuous ultrafast imaging speed of 10 Mfps at a field of view of 0.5 mm ${}^{\ast} 1.6$ mm. A barcode with a moving speed of 4m/s is also demonstrated for imaging and an imaging speed of 1.25 Mfps is obtained. The proposed optical imaging system overcomes the big data issue, increases energy efficiency, and paves the way for compact and highly efficient ultrafast optical imaging within dynamic scenarios.

Abstract:A novel highly efficient, fiber-compatible spectrally encoded imaging (SEI) system using a 45° tilted fiber grating (TFG) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The TFG serves as an in-fiber lateral diffraction element, eliminating the need for bulky and lossy free-space diffraction gratings in conventional SEI systems. Abstract:Photonic time-stretch applications overcome the speed limitations of conventional digitizers and enable the observation of nonrepetitive and statistically rare phenomena that occur on short timescales. In most time-stretch applications, large temporal dispersion with large bandwidth is highly desired to satisfy the far-field diffraction regime. However, most conventional spatial dispersers or chirped fiber Bragg gratings are constrained by their spatial volume, which can be overcome by using ultra-low-loss dispersive fibers, an ideal medium for large temporal dispersion (2), but they suffer from third-order dispersion (3) and aberrations. In this paper, an optical phase conjugation-based, third-order dispersion compensation scheme was introduced, with accumulated 2 and eliminated 3, and it achieved a 3400-ps2 pure temporal dispersion of over 30-nm bandwidth. Leveraging this pure temporal dispersion, up to 2 of temporal aberrations were eliminated. Furthermore, Fourier domain spectroscopy achieved a record 15000 optical effective resolvable points, with a nondegraded 2-pm resolution over a 30-nm range.

Abstract:A new ultra-long period fiber grating constructed by a series of up tapers is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A fiber grating with length of 2mm is fabricated by cascading three up-tapers on a single mode fiber, which is the shortest ultra-long period fiber grating up to now. The effect of periodic error is greatly reduced due to the ultra-long grating pitch. The fabrication repeatability is greatly improved by adopting semi-automated fabrication techniques. Strain and temperature are identified simultaneously by tracing the change of resonant wavelength and attenuation peak amplitude with a resolution of $6.2~mu varepsilon $ and 0.2°C, respectively.

Abstract:The time-stretch (TS) imaging system is one type of ultrafast optical imaging system that enables imaging with an unprecedented imaging speed of tens of hundreds of megahertz. The TS imaging achieves linear one-to-one mapping between wavelength and time using a temporal dispersive medium. However, the data issue of high throughput and the fixed resolution in TS imaging limits its wide applications. In this paper, we propose an ultrafast optical imaging system with anamorphic transformation (AT) based on the STEAM structure, which has the benefit of data compression and changing group delay-related resolution. AT is obtained by the usage of chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) with a nonlinear group delay profile. A state-of-the-art experimental demonstration shows that more acquired data are employed to describe the dense information region and the group delay-related resolution is improved by 58% using our proposed ultrafast optical imaging system without reducing the line scanning speed of 50 MHz. The proposal could increase the group delay-related resolution of the target image without adding extra data acquisition or changing the system setup, which has great potential in ultrafast optical imaging systems. Furthermore, the AT in our proposal could also be applied to data compression algorithms to mitigate the data issue in ultrafast optical imaging systems.

Abstract:With the alignment of the fiber core systems containing dual-CCDs and high-precision electric displacement platform, twisted long period fiber gratings (T-LPFGs) were fabricated in two different twisted SMF-28 fibers by femtosecond laser. The torsion characteristics of the T-LPFGs were experimentally and theoretical investigated and demonstrated in this study. The achieved torsion sensitivity is 117.4pm/(rad/m) in the torsion range −105–0rad/m with a linearity of 0.9995. Experimental results show that compared with the ordinary long period fiber gratings, the resonance wavelength of the gratings presents an opposite symmetrical shift depending on the twisting direction after the applied torsion is removed. In addition, high sensitivity could be obtained, which is very suitable for the applications in the torsion sensor. These results are important for the design of new torsion sensors based on T-LPFGs fabricated by femtosecond laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate an experimental realization of the time-stretch configured fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogator with an ultrafast speed. The interrogator consists of a home-made ultrabroadband fiber laser, an FBG sensor array, and two dispersive elements (single mode fibers). A time-stretch method is employed to convert the wavelength shift of the FBG sensor array to time shift via the principle of wavelength-to-time mapping. It is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that the wavelength-related time shift suffers no influence although the Bragg wavelength and bandwidth of the strained FBG might be different. The interrogator works in real time, so that a single-shot measurement without carrying out any averaging is feasible.

Abstract:A single-shot measurement technique for ultrafast phenomena with high throughput enables the capture of rare events within a short time scale, facilitating the exploration of rare ultrafast processes. Photonic time stretch stands out as a highly effective method for both detecting rapid events and achieving remarkable speed in imaging and ranging applications. The current time stretch method relies on costly passive mode-locked lasers with continuous and fixed spectra to capture fast transients and dilate their time scale using dispersion. This hinders the broad application of time stretch technology and presents synchronization challenges with ultrafast events for measurement. Here we report the first implementation of time stretch using continuous wave (CW) diode lasers with discrete and tunable spectra that are common in WDM optical communication. This approach offers the potential for more cost-effective and compact time stretch systems and simplifies laser synchronization with the input signal. Two different embodiments in the United States and Japan demonstrate the technique's operation and limitations, and potential applications to time stretch imaging and angular light scattering.

Abstract:In this Letter, we demonstrate 8°-tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) inscription in single-mode step-index TOPAS/ZEONEX polymer optical fibers (POFs) using a 520 nm femtosecond laser and the line-by-line (LbL) writing technique. As a result of the tilt angle and the fiber refractive index, a large spectral range of cladding mode resonances covering 147 nm is obtained. The evolution of the transmitted spectrum is analyzed as a function of the surrounding refractive index (SRI) in a large range from 1.30 to 1.50. The cutoff cladding mode shows a refractive index sensitivity of 507 nm/RIU (refractive index unit). For single-resonance tracking near the cutoff mode, the sensitivity is at least 6 nm/RIU, depending on the exact wavelength position of the cladding modes. The main originality of our work is that it produces, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a TFBG in POF that operates in the refractive index range of aqueous solutions. The sensing capability for a large range of refractive index values is also relevant for (bio)chemical sensing in different media.

Abstract:Optical time stretch has been employed for ultrafast optical imaging based on space-to-wavelength-to-time mapping. However, temporal overlap between two adjacent time-stretched pulses is a disadvantageous factor that limits the spatial resolution, or the frame rate has to be reduced by reducing the pulse repetition rate to avoid the temporal overlap. To increase the spatial resolution without reducing the frame rate, we propose a novel technique based on polarization-division multiplexing, using a polarization modulator to generate two polarization interleaved pulse trains. Since two adjacent optical pulses are orthogonally polarized, the spacing between two adjacent pulses for one polarization direction is doubled, and the spatial resolution is doubled by using a dispersive element with two times the dispersion. The proposed approach is experimentally evaluated. An imaging system with an increased spatial resolution is demonstrated.
In-fibre Diffraction Grating Based Beam Steering for Full Duplex Optical Wireless Communication

Abstract:A novel approach to achieve wavelength controlled optical beam steering using a 45° tilted fiber grating (TFG) for full-duplex indoor optical wireless transmission is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. The 45° TFG functions as an in-fiber passive diffraction device for wavelength steered light emission and reception, which enables full-duplex optical wireless transmission. The unique advantages of using an in-fiber TFG device for beam steering include high diffraction efficiency, low cost, compactness and inherent compatibility with existing fiber links. In a proof-of-concept experiment, 1.4 m freespace full-duplex transmission has been demonstrated with data rate of 9.6 Gb/s per beam using 2.4 GHz bandwidth signals.

Abstract:A novel long-period fiber grating (LPFG), fabricated by periodically cascading a series of screw-type distortions, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. These screw-type distortions are induced by twisting the fiber during CO2 laser beam exposure. The resulting LPFG will either be left- or right-hand helical, depending on the twist rate and direction used during fabrication, with a certain frozen shear strain. Due to the independence between grating pitch and twist rate, this type of LPFG could be more flexible than the helical- or chiral-fiber gratings reported previously. During LPFG twisting, the device displays good directional dependence and an enhanced torsion sensitivity of 0.1604 nm/(rad/m), which implies the structure could be an excellent candidate for torsion sensors.

Abstract:Optical time-stretch microscopy has recently attracted intensive attention for its capability of acquiring images at an ultrahigh frame rate. Unfortunately, its achievable frame rate is limited by the requirement of having no overlap between consecutive frames, which leads to a tradeoff between the frame rate (pulse repetition rate) and the amount of the temporal dispersion used for optical image serialization. In this paper, we demonstrate compressive sensing on the platform of optical time-stretch microscopy to overcome the tradeoff between frame rate and temporal dispersion (time stretch) and achieve 50 times higher frame rate than conventional optical time-stretch microscopy. Specifically, we computationally perform compressed optical time-stretch microscopy with an experimental dataset acquired by conventional optical time-stretch microscopy and demonstrate its effects in terms of spatial resolution and cell classification accuracy. Our results indicate that the spatial resolution and cell classification accuracy reach 780 nm and 95% at a line scan rate of 675 MHz and 6.75 GHz, respectively, which correspond to five times and 50 times higher frame rates than what conventional optical time-stretch microscopy can achieve with the same dispersion amount and digitizer sampling rate.

Abstract:A wavelength division ultrafast microscopic imaging scheme is proposed and demonstrated. This scheme is based on wavelength-time-space mapping technique. And we use wavelength division to avoid temporal overlapping in optical fiber, the overlapped single frame is divided into two bands by optical filters. Thus each frame in different wavelength band can be received separately. By using this method, large dispersion fiber can be used to achieve higher resolution.

Abstract:A flexible multimode fiber is an exceptionally efficient tool for in vivo deep tissue imaging. Recent advances in compressive multimode fiber sensing allow for imaging with sub-diffraction spatial resolution and sub-Nyquist speed. At present, the technology is limited to imaging in a two-dimensional (2D) plane near the fiber distal facet while in real applications it is very important to visualize three-dimensional (3D) structures. Here we propose a new approach for fast sub-diffraction 3D imaging through a multimode fiber by using a single 2D scan, speckle illumination, and bucket detection. We experimentally demonstrate precise image plane location as well as 3D imaging of samples with various scattering coefficients. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the point spread function along the axial direction is 3 times smaller than the diffraction limit. Our study grants depth-resolving capacity to ultra-thin super-resolution fiber endoscopes for life science and medical applications.
