Abstract:Wearable electronic devices have attracted numerous attention in tactile sensing, motion detecting, and biomedical signal monitoring. In particular, a wearable and self-powered sensor combining all the merits of sensitivity, transparency, stretchability, and flexibility is highly demanded to adapt human skins. Herein, we report a fully transparent, highly stretchable, and self-powered contact-separation triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) as a tactile sensor. The TENG consists of a double-network ionogel with the transparency, stretchability, and conductivity as the electrode and one friction layer, and patterned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as another friction layer. The fabricated sensor reaches a maximum sensitivity of 1.76 V N-1 when detecting impacting forces in the range of 0.1-1 N. Meanwhile, with good stretchability of the sensor, the triboelectric signals maintain a good linearity with impacting forces at different tensile ratios (0%, 10%, 50%, and 80% strain). These properties enable the sensor to be capable of monitoring a variety of human activities, including finger touching and bending, breathing, and pulse beating. We believe such a transparent, stretchable and self-powered tactile TENG sensor has tremendous application potential in wearable and soft electronics.

Abstract:We present a single-friction-surface triboelectric generator (STEG). The STEG is transparent and flexible, making possible the use of triboelectric generators in an extended range of applications. This device is fabricated in a simple and very low-cost way. When tapped with a finger, the STEG with micro-patterned PDMS surface achieved an open-circuit voltage over 130 V with a short-circuit current density of about 1 mu A cm(-2). A STEG with a flat PET surface is employed as a transparent cover on the screen of a smartphone to generate electric energy from the control motion of the users. The STEG can directly power 3 LEDs when the phone screen is tapped during normal use. In addition, based on the STEG, we have developed a self-powered visualized touch sensor with 4 STEGs serving as the touch pads. The STEG shows promise for applications in systems such as self-powered touch panels and artificial skins.

Abstract:The vast proliferation of wearables and smart sensing devices in the last decade has created an immense demand for new and efficient powering solutions. The research focus has shifted towards developing simple, cost-effective, flexible device topologies capable of capturing kinetic energy associated with the human body. Piezoelectric and Triboelectric mechanisms are widely employed to convert biomechanical energy to electrical power due to their inherent merits in terms of affordable designs and high energy conversion efficiencies. In this work, we propose a flexible hybrid generator topology incorporating both piezoelectric and triboelectric mechanisms to achieve high electrical output from human motion. To enhance the efficiency and obtain a symmetric output, dual triboelectric generators are employed, which generate time-multiplexed output across the same set of electrodes. The device displays a characteristic ability to distinguish between different body movements as its output depends on the contact area as well as the pressure generated by the motion. This creates numerous avenues for employing the device in self-powered tactile sensing applications. The unique single substrate design makes the device robust and increases its longevity. The V-shaped prototype having an active area of 3.5 cm × 2 cm, is tested under a wide range of biomechanical stimuli, including touching, tapping, and pressing motions. The practical applications of the proposed device as an add-on patch on fabrics, as an in-sole device, and for powering commercial electronics are demonstrated. Apart from this, the reported generator can also fuel low-power devices from various other day-to-day human activities.

Abstract:Wearable sensors have drawn vast interest for their convenience to be worn on body to monitor and track body movements or exercise activities in real time. However, wearable electronics rely on powering systems to function. Herein, a self-powered, porous, flexible, hydrophobic and breathable nanofibrous membrane based on electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber has been developed as a tactile sensor with low-cost and simple fabrication for human body motion detection and recognition. Specifically, effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) and barium titanate (BTO) as additives to the fiber morphology as well as mechanical and dielectric properties of the piezoelectric nanofiber membrane were investigated. The fabricated BTO@PVDF piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) exhibits the high β-phase content and best overall electrical performances, thus selected for the flexible sensing device assembly. Meanwhile, the nanofibrous membrane demonstrated robust tactile sensing performance that the device exhibits durability over 12,000 loading test cycles, holds a fast response time of 82.7 ms, responds to a wide pressure range of 0–5 bar and shows a high relative sensitivity, especially in the small force range of 11.6 V/bar upon pressure applied perpendicular to the surface. Furthermore, when attached on human body, its unique fibrous and flexible structure offers the tactile sensor to present as a health care monitor in a self-powered manner by translating motions of different movements to electrical signals with various patterns or sequences.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:A facile electrostatic spinning method to fabricate PVDF@Mxene composites with spherical multiple physical networks serving as triboelectric materials for a non‐contact triboelectric nanogenerator is developed. This material's architecture exhibits high charge and power output (128 μC m–2 and 200 μW cm–2). In a certain range, it can effectively monitor the human movement status and position in real time. Non‐contact mode triboelectric nanogenerators effectively avoid physical contact between two triboelectric materials and achieve long‐term reliable operation, providing broad application prospects in the field of self‐powered sensing. However, the low surface charge density of triboelectric materials restricts application of contactless sensing. Herein, by controlling Rayleigh Instability deformation of the spinning jet and vapor‐induced phase separation during electrostatic spinning, a polyvinylidene fluoride@Mxene (Ti3C2Tx) composite film with spheres multiple physical network structures is prepared and utilized as the triboelectric material of a self‐powered contactless sensor. The structure of the composite film and high conductivity of Ti3C2Tx provide triboelectric materials with high output performance (charge output and power output up to 128 μC m–2 and 200 μW cm–2 at 2 Hz) and high output stability. The self‐powered contactless sensor shows excellent speed sensitivity (1.175 Vs m–1). Additionally, it could accurately identify the motion states such as running (55 mV), jumping (105 mV), and walking (40 mV) within the range of 70 cm, and present the signals in different pop forms. This work lays a solid foundation for the development and application of high‐performance triboelectric materials, and has guiding significance for the research of self‐powered contactless sensing.

Abstract:Recent advances in thin, soft skin‐integrated electronics have brought many opportunities in the wearable technics. A simple platform with the functionality of self‐powering for epidermal electronics is reported. These electronics can generate electricity from external mechanical stresses that associates with triboelectric effect, and therefore afford excellent performance in tactile sensing and energy harvesting. Combined advances in materials and mechanics of the skin‐integrated electronics with high efficiency energy harvesting techniques, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) in an epidermal format is realized for the first time. The dots‐distributed electrode pattern allows these electronics exhibiting excellent flexibility and stretchability, distinguishing a broad range of pressures that are relevant to normal body motions. The electricity output of the epidermal device from simple finger tapping modes can achieve >60 V of voltage and >1 µA of current, which is sufficient to light up 15 small light‐emitting diodes. Furthermore, the authors also report a 4 × 4 sensor array based on these TENGs, and demonstrate a skin‐like electronics for real‐time motion monitoring and tactile mapping.

Abstract:Flexible electronics devices with tactile perception can sense the mechanical property data of the environment and the human body, and they present a huge potential in the human health system. In particular, the introduction of ultra-flexible and self-powered characteristics to tactile sensors can effectively reduce the problems caused by rigid batteries. Herein, we report a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), mainly consisting of an ultra-flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film with micro-pyramid-structure and sputtered aluminum electrodes, which achieves highly conformal contact with skin and the self-powered detection of human body motions. The flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film was selected as spacer layer, which made the sensor work in the contact-separation mode and endowed the perfect coupling of triboelectrification and electrostatic induction. Moreover, the controllable and uniform micro-structure PDMS film was fabricated by using the micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) manufacturing process, bringing a good sensitivity and high output performance to the device. The developed TENG can directly convert mechanical energy into electric energy and light up 110 green Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Furthermore, the TENG-based sensor displays good sensitivity (2.54 V/kPa), excellent linearity (R2 = 0.99522) and good stability (over 30,000 cycles). By virtue of the compact size, great electrical properties, and great mechanical properties, the developed sensor can be conformally attached to human skin to monitor joint movements, presenting a promising application in wearable tactile devices. We believe that the ultra-flexible and self-powered tactile TENG-based sensor could have tremendous application in wearable electrons.

Abstract:With the increasing potential of smart clothing, the demand for generating energy directly in the tissue fibers has prompted for increased research in the field of energy harvesters based on wearable nanogenerators. Current challenges remain in the combination of high output performance, functionalization, and importantly wearing comfort. Herein, an all-fiber hybrid piezoelectric-enhanced triboelectric nanogenerator fabricated by electrospinning silk fibroin and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers on conductive fabrics is presented. Due to the large specific surface area of nanofibers and the extraordinary ability of silk fibroin to donate electrons in triboelectrification, the hybrid nanogenerator shows outstanding electrical performance, with a power density of 310 mu W/cm(2). This novel all-fiber configuration provides all benefits of ordinary fabrics having flexible appearance and good air permeability, and moreover it can be custom embedded in clothes in any desirable size and shape. Furthermore, the fabricated device allows identifying various types of body motion by a correlation between gesture and corresponding electrical signal. As potential application field, we foresee an autonomous wearable fall alert microsystem for elderly people and persons working in high risk areas.

Abstract:Self-powered tactile sensors based on triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can be sustainable and intelligent for dynamically monitoring various physiological signals and motions. Nevertheless, it is still very challenging for the TENG-based sensors to be simultaneously sensitive to deformation caused by stress and strain. Herein, a piezoresistive fiber-base triboelectric sensor (PRF-TES) is designed by using nylon thread, silver nanowires (Ag NWs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), Parafilm and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as source materials. The elaborate hierarchical structure of the textile PRF-TES ranges from one-dimensional macroscopic fibers to elastic polymer with an internal nanoscale CNTs percolation network, which presents a relatively large contact area, multiple contact points and large deformation space for both mechanical energy collection and force sensing. Dynamically, the textile TENG enables the monitoring of physically changes of human body (for example, joint movement, gesture, etc.), but also the information on the contacted object, such as material texture, type and shape. Statically, it can sensitively detect the stress and strain itself as well as the mass and position of the touched object in the two-dimensional space. This work enlightens the development of highly sensitive and multimodal sensors for broad application in personal health monitoring and human-computer interaction.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of advancements in modern multifunctional wearable electronics, there is a growing demand for simple, sustainable, and portable electronic skin (e-skin), posing significant challenges. This study aims to delineate the development of a straightforward, transparent, highly sensitive, and high power-density electronic skin based on a triboelectric nanogenerator(S-TENG), designed for harvesting human body energy and real-time monitoring of the physiological motion status. Our e-skin incorporates thermally treated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fiber membranes as the contact layer and a film of silver nanowires as the conductive electrodes. The resulting contact-separation type e-skin exhibits an impressive transparency of 80 %, along with a nice sensitivity value, capable of detecting a light touch from a 0.13 g sponge and demonstrating good working stability and breathability. Leveraging the triboelectric effect, our e-skin generates an open-circuit voltage of 301 V and a short-circuit current of 2.7 μA under an extrinsic force of 8 N over an interaction area of 4 × 4 cm 2 , achieving a power density up to 306 mW/m 2 . With its signal processing circuitry, the integrated S-TENG showcases nice energy harvesting and signal transmission capabilities. Accordingly, we contend that S-TENG has potential applications in energy capture and real-time human motion state monitoring. This research is anticipated to blaze a novel and practical trail for self-powered wearable devices and personalized health rehabilitation training regimens.

Abstract:This paper studied and realized a flexible nanogenerator based on P(VDF-TrFE) nanofibers and PDMS/MWCNT thin composite membrane, which worked under triboelectric and piezoelectric hybrid mechanisms. The P(VDF-TrFE) nanofibers as a piezoelectric functional layer and a triboelectric friction layer are formed by electrospinning process. In order to improve the performance of triboelectric nanogenerator, the multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) is doped into PDMS patterned films as the other flexible friction layer to increase the initial capacitance. The flexible nanogenerator is fabricated by low cost MEMS processes. Its output performance is characterized in detail and structural optimization is performed. The device’s output peak-peak voltage, power and power density under triboelectric mechanism are 25 V, 98.56 μW and 1.98 mW/cm3 under the pressure force of 5 N, respectively. The output peak-peak voltage, power and power density under piezoelectric working principle are 2.5 V, 9.74 μW, and 0.689 mW/cm3 under the same condition, respectively. We believe that the proposed flexible, biocompatible, lightweight, low cost nanogenerator will supply effective power energy sustainably for wearable devices in practical applications.

Abstract:The increasing demand of portable electronics requires modern power sources to be flexible, wearable, durable, and waterproof. This work reports a flexible single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator composed of MXene/polydimethylsiloxane film. The effect of (MXene) content (wt%) and compressive force on the output performance of the as-prepared devices are systematically studied. A peak-to-peak open-circuit voltage of 225 V, short-circuit current density of 30 μA cm−2, and a maximum power density of 10 mW cm−2 on a load resistance of 100 MΩ are obtained by periodically hand hammering a 2 × 4 cm2 smart textile-based composite. The high output directly powers 80 green light emitting diodes connected in series without any additional power source. In addition to its application as a triboelectric nanogenerator, the textile-based composite is also implemented as a human motion sensor, detecting various human motions such as finger tapping, hand clapping, and hand hammering. Such lightweight smart textiles provide potential opportunities for multifunctional power sources and hence have promising applications in self-powered wearable electronics.

Abstract:Robust power supplies and self‐powered sensors that are extensible, autonomously adhesive, and transparent are highly desirable for next‐generation electronic/energy/robotic applications. In the work, a solid‐state triboelectric patch integrated with the above features ( ≈ 318% elongation, > 85% average transmission, ≈ 44.3 N m −1 adhesive strength) is developed using polyethylene oxide/waterborne polyurethane/phytic acid composite (abbreviated as PWP composite) as an effective current collector and silicone rubber as tribolayer. The PWP composite is optimized systematically and corresponding single‐electrode device can supply a power density of 2.3 W m −2 at 75% strain. The triboelectric patch is capable of charging capacitors and powering electronics by efficiently harvesting biomechanical energies. Moreover, it can be autonomously attached to nonplanar skin or apparel substrates and used as a tactile sensor or an epidermal input touchpad for physiological motion detection and remote control of appliances, respectively. Even after dynamic deformation, tailoring, and prolonged use, the patch can maintain good stability and reliability of electrical outputs. This work provides a novel solid‐state and liquid‐free polyionic electrode‐based triboelectric nanogenerator integrated with adhesiveness, stretchability, and transparency, which can meet wide application needs from transparent electronics, artificial skins, to smart interfaces.

Abstract:In this article, we present an electrode-free triboelectric generator for harvesting biomechanical energy from human motions through triboelectrification between shoe sole and ground. A thin film of porous ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) is designed and pasted on shoe sole to serve as the friction surface. Electricity is generated by the contacting friction of shoe sole with ground surface during walking, which makes no initial vertical gap needed in shoe sole. At the same time, human body is employed as the natural electrode instead of fabricated electrodes, and the electricity can be obtained from any part of human body. In addition, output performances are characterized by using three different conductors as reference electrode. The output voltage of 810V is achieved and charge of over 550nC is transferred in one step of an adult׳s walking. Meanwhile, 76 blue LEDs are lighted through a watch as output node. Owing to the advantage of body electrode, it has potential applications in wearable electronics and implantable devices.
Revolutionizing energy harvesting: Eco-friendly and adaptable triboelectric sensors with recycled cloth and metallo-dielectric loaded Ecoflex hybrid films

Abstract:Developing nanoengineered, efficient, self-powered, flexible, and lightweight wearable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) for detecting real-time human movements is challenging. We employ a novel metal-coupled NaYF 4 dielectric matrix prepared in-situ and doped with lanthanide ions (NaYF 4 :Yb,Er@Au nanocomposites , NCs) to minimize triboelectric losses and facilitate charge transfer in Ecoflex (EC). Polyester cloth (PC: tribopositive) and EC + 0.5–2.5 wt% of NC (tribonegative) layers with and without polymer spacers are used to fabricate TENG devices for application in low-power wearable electronics. After incorporating 2wt% NC into the EC layer, the pristine PC/EC-based TENG demonstrates 7.5-fold (56 V to 420 V), 6-fold (1.4 μA to 8.5 μA), and 3.8-fold (18.2 nC to 70 nC) enhancements in open circuit voltage, short circuit current, and charge accumulation, respectively, under 5 N and 5 Hz. COMSOL simulations support the generation of potential distributions. The device without Au nanoparticles exhibits poor performance (179 V, 5.4 μA). The PC/EC + 2wt% NC TENG produces a power density of 3.7 Wm −2 and powers a stopwatch and 100 light-emitting diodes. Finally, a spacer-free flexible, wearable triboelectric sensor is fabricated, which detects human activities and yields a stable and reproducible 6 V output. This performance is the highest to date achieved using this material class, demonstrating the potential for developing consumer wearable electronics.

Abstract:The rapid development of wearable sensing technology exhibits unprecedented opportunities for artificial intelligence by establishing an interactive interface between the physical and the virtual worlds. Energy preservation and multi-functional integration are central for the enhancement of perception and sustainability of wearable electronics. Herein, to address the above two critical challenges, we presented a printed silk-fibroin-based triboelectric nanogenerator (PS-TENG), which can efficiently scavenge the bio-mechanical energy and precisely detect components of environmental humidity and human body motions simultaneously. An industrial mass-fabrication technology, i.e. screen-printing process, was successfully optimized to manufacture graphite-based microscale surface patterns atop polymeric soft substrate to form interdigital electrodes, which was covered by a thin layer of silk fibroin to realize the PS-TENG. The proposed wearable PS-TENG exhibited a remarkable output performance, and the voltage, the current and the power density achieved up to 666 V, 174.6 μA, 412 μW/cm2, respectively. Furthermore, this ultra-thin foldable PS-TENG possesses incredible features for multi-functional wearable sensing. With the help of the unique selective absorption property of silk fibroin, it was firstly reported that the existing states of water molecules (i.e., liquid and gaseous) in the air were successfully distinguished. Moreover, as attractive potential applications, it was demonstrated to accurately discriminate the health situation of human body (i.e., respiratory monitoring and joints motion recognizing) based on the capacitive and the triboelectric principles respectively, which is a novel combination of passive sensing and active sensing mechanisms within a single wearable device.
