Abstract:The wrapped method is the most widely used method for constructing distributions for circular data. In this paper, we provide a review of all known wrapped distributions, including 45 distributions for continuous circular data and 10 distributions for discrete circular data. For each wrapped distribution, we state its nth trigonometric moment, mean direction, mean resultant length, skewness, and kurtosis. We also discuss data applications and limitations of each wrapped distribution. This review could be a useful reference and encourage the development of more wrapped distributions. We also mention an R package available for fitting all of the reviewed distributions and illustrate its applications.

Abstract:The Wrapped package computes the probability density function, cumulative distribution function, quantile function and also generates random samples for many univariate wrapped distributions. It also computes maximum likelihood estimates, standard errors, confidence intervals and measures of goodness of fit for nearly fifty univariate wrapped distributions. Numerical illustrations of the package are given.

Abstract:Understanding variable dependence, particularly eliciting their statistical properties given a set of covariates, provides the mathematical foundation in practical operations management such as risk analysis and decision-making given observed circumstances. This article presents an estimation method for modeling the conditional joint distribution of bivariate outcomes based on the distribution regression and factorization methods. This method is considered semiparametric in that it allows for flexible modeling of both the marginal and joint distributions conditional on covariates without imposing global parametric assumptions across the entire distribution. In contrast to existing parametric approaches, our method can accommodate discrete, continuous, or mixed variables, and provides a simple yet effective way to capture distributional dependence structures between bivariate outcomes and covariates. Various simulation results confirm that our method can perform similarly or better in finite samples compared to the alternative methods. In an application to the study of a motor third-party liability insurance portfolio, the proposed method effectively estimates risk measures such as the conditional Value-at-Risk and Expected Shortfall. This result suggests that this semiparametric approach can serve as an alternative in insurance risk management.

Abstract:A new robust class of multivariate skew distributions is introduced. Practical aspects such as parameter estimation method of the proposed class are discussed, we show that the proposed class can be fitted under a reasonable time frame. Our study shows that the class of distributions is capable to model multivariate skewness structure and does not suffer from the curse of dimensionality as heavily as other distributions of similar complexity do, such as the class of canonical skew distributions. We also derive a nested form of the proposed class which appears to be the most flexible class of multivariate skew distributions in literature that has a closed-form density function. Numerical examples on two data sets, i) a data set containing daily river flow data recorded in the UK; and ii) a data set containing biomedical variables of athletes collected by the Australian Institute of Sports (AIS), are demonstrated. These examples further support the practicality of the proposed class on moderate dimensional data sets.

Abstract:Inferring the most appropriate distribution (or distributions) to describe observed directional data is important in many applications of circular statistics. In particular, animal movement paths are typically analysed and modelled by considering the distribution of step lengths and turning (or absolute) angles. Here we demonstrate that a single-wrapped Cauchy distribution can appear to fit directional data mixed from two different underlying wrapped normal distributions. We derive mathematical expressions to calculate the parameter space for which this occurs and illustrate the result by analysing an example data set of the movements of African bull elephants (<i>Loxodonta Africana</i>). We conclude that the presence of a wrapped Cauchy distribution in observed directional data can, in certain cases, be explained by data coming from two distinct underlying distributions. We discuss how this may relate to the presence of multiple movement modes within an observed path when analysing animal movement data.

Abstract:Baker (2008) introduced a new class of bivariate distributions based on distributions of order statistics from two independent samples of size n. Lin-Huang (2010) discovered an important property of Baker's distribution and showed that the Pearson's correlation coefficient for this distribution converges to maximum attainable value, i.e. the correlation coefficient of the Frechét upper bound, as n increases to infinity. Bairamov and Bayramoglu (2011) investigated a new class of bivariate distributions constructed by using Baker's model and distributions of order statistics from dependent random variables, allowing high correlation than that of Baker's distribution. In this paper a new class of Baker's type bivariate distributions with high correlation are constructed on the base of distributions of order statistics by using an arbitrary continuous copula instead of the product copula. Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a new wrapped distribution obtained from Richard link function. In the literature, many probability distributions are used wrapped form via normal, Cauchy, etc.. In this point, the most important characteristic of the Richard link function is that the flexible. Because of this feature Richard link function is useful. But, the Richard link function does not have a distribution form and analytical solution of parameter estimation. In this study we examined properties of wrapped Richard distribution and we have sampled for ant data.

Abstract:In many practical scenarios, including finance, environmental sciences, system reliability, etc., it is often of interest to study the various notion of negative dependence among the observed variables. A new bivariate copula is proposed for modeling negative dependence between two random variables that complies with most of the popular notions of negative dependence reported in the literature. Specifically, the Spearman's rho and the Kendall's tau for the proposed copula have a simple one-parameter form with negative values in the full range. Some important ordering properties comparing the strength of negative dependence with respect to the parameter involved are considered. Simple examples of the corresponding bivariate distributions with popular marginals are presented. Application of the proposed copula is illustrated using a real data set on air quality in the New York City, USA.

Abstract:A new probabilistic post-processing method for wind vectors is presented in a distributional regression framework employing the bivariate Gaussian distribution. In contrast to previous studies all parameters of the distribution are simultaneously modeled, namely the means and variances for both wind components and also the correlation coefficient between them employing flexible regression splines. To capture a possible mismatch between the predicted and observed wind direction, ensemble forecasts of both wind components are included using flexible two-dimensional smooth functions. This encompasses a smooth rotation of the wind direction conditional on the season and the forecasted ensemble wind direction.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of multivariate elliptically symmetric distributions including elliptically symmetric logistic distributions and Kotz type distributions. We investigate the various probabilistic properties including marginal distributions, conditional distributions, linear transformations, characteristic functions and dependence measure in the perspective of the inconsistency property. In addition, we provide a real data example to show that the new distributions have reasonable flexibility.

Sliced Wasserstein Regression

Abstract:While statistical modeling of distributional data has gained increased attention, the case of multivariate distributions has been somewhat neglected despite its relevance in various applications. This is because the Wasserstein distance, commonly used in distributional data analysis, poses challenges for multivariate distributions. A promising alternative is the sliced Wasserstein distance, which offers a computationally simpler solution. We propose distributional regression models with multivariate distributions as responses paired with Euclidean vector predictors. The foundation of our methodology is a slicing transform from the multivariate distribution space to the sliced distribution space for which we establish a theoretical framework, with the Radon transform as a prominent example. We introduce and study the asymptotic properties of sample-based estimators for two regression approaches, one based on utilizing the sliced Wasserstein distance directly in the multivariate distribution space, and a second approach based on a new slice-wise distance, employing a univariate distribution regression for each slice. Both global and local Fr\'echet regression methods are deployed for these approaches and illustrated in simulations and through applications. These include joint distributions of excess winter death rates and winter temperature anomalies in European countries as a function of base winter temperature and also data from finance.

Abstract:Abstract A weighted likelihood technique for robust estimation of multivariate Wrapped distributions of data points scattered on a $$p-$$ p - dimensional torus is proposed. The occurrence of outliers in the sample at hand can badly compromise inference for standard techniques such as maximum likelihood method. Therefore, there is the need to handle such model inadequacies in the fitting process by a robust technique and an effective downweighting of observations not following the assumed model. Furthermore, the employ of a robust method could help in situations of hidden and unexpected substructures in the data. Here, it is suggested to build a set of data-dependent weights based on the Pearson residuals and solve the corresponding weighted likelihood estimating equations. In particular, robust estimation is carried out by using a Classification EM algorithm whose M-step is enhanced by the computation of weights based on current parameters’ values. The finite sample behavior of the proposed method has been investigated by a Monte Carlo numerical study and real data examples.

Abstract:This paper considers the three‐parameter family of symmetric unimodal distributions obtained by wrapping the location‐scale extension of Student's t distribution onto the unit circle. The family contains the wrapped normal and wrapped Cauchy distributions as special cases, and can be used to closely approximate the von Mises distribution. In general, the density of the family can only be represented in terms of an infinite summation, but its trigonometric moments are relatively simple expressions involving modified Bessel functions. Point estimation of the parameters is considered, and likelihood‐based methods are used to fit the family of distributions in an illustrative analysis of cross‐bed measurements. The use of the family as a means of approximating the von Mises distribution is investigated in detail, and new efficient algorithms are proposed for the generation of approximate pseudo‐random von Mises variates.

Abstract:A framework of two-sided densities is presented for asymmetric continuous distributions consisting of two branches each with its own generating density. The framework supports the construction of distributions with positive support and a specified mode. Examples thereof shall be constructed using the beta and Burr Type XII distributions for their left and right branch densities. The examples are parameterized via left and right branch scale parameters, a mode parameter and two parameters determining the heaviness of its right tail. Keeping one of the tail parameters fixed, a procedure solving for their parameters is presented given a lower and upper quantile, a mode and a conditional-value-at-risk, popular in risk management of insurance losses. While valuable on its own right, that solution may be used as a starting point for a maximum likelihood routine. The estimation of the parameters is demonstrated using the classical insurance Danish fire loss data set and a French business loss interruption data set. Both data sets are publicly available. Developed models compare favorably with prior models fitted to the Danish fire loss data in the literature.

Abstract:Due to the lack of a canonical ordering in ${\mathbb R}^d$ for $d>1$, defining multivariate generalizations of the classical univariate ranks has been a long-standing open problem in statistics. Optimal transport has been shown to offer a solution in which multivariate ranks are obtained by transporting data points to a grid that approximates a uniform reference measure (Chernozhukov et al., 2017; Hallin, 2017; Hallin et al., 2021), thereby inducing ranks, signs, and a data-driven ordering of ${\mathbb R}^d$. We take up this new perspective to define and study multivariate analogues of the sign covariance/quadrant statistic, Spearman's rho, Kendall's tau, and van der Waerden covariances. The resulting tests of multivariate independence are fully distribution-free, hence uniformly valid irrespective of the actual (absolutely continuous) distribution of the observations. Our results provide the asymptotic distribution theory for these new test statistics, with asymptotic approximations to critical values to be used for testing independence between random vectors, as well as a power analysis of the resulting tests in an extension of the so-called (bivariate) Konijn model. This power analysis includes a multivariate Chernoff--Savage property guaranteeing that, under elliptical generalized Konijn models, the asymptotic relative efficiency of our van der Waerden tests with respect to Wilks' classical (pseudo-)Gaussian procedure is strictly larger than or equal to one, where equality is achieved under Gaussian distributions only. We similarly provide a lower bound for the asymptotic relative efficiency of our Spearman procedure with respect to Wilks' test, thus extending the classical result by Hodges and Lehmann on the asymptotic relative efficiency, in univariate location models, of Wilcoxon tests with respect to the Student ones.

Abstract:A new circular probability distribution which is based on GvM (generalization of the von Mises) is proposed. The new distribution is used to construct a joint probability distribution which is applied to fit joint distribution of linear and circular variables such as wind speed and wind direction. The results of several numerical experiments show that compared with the existing distribution models, the new circular distribution and the new constructed joint distribution in the paper can provide higher degree of the fit for the wind data under study.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a new class of bivariate negative binomial distributions having marginal distributions with different index parameters. This feature is useful in statistical modelling and simulation studies, where different marginal distributions and a specified correlation are required. This feature also makes it more flexible than the existing bivariate generalizations of the negative binomial distribution, which have a common index parameter in the marginal distributions. Various interesting properties, such as canonical expansions and quadrant dependence, are obtained. Potential application of the proposed class of bivariate negative binomial distributions, as a bivariate mixed Poisson distribution, and computer generation of samples are examined. Numerical examples as well as goodness-of-fit to simulated and real data are also given here in order to illustrate the application of this family of bivariate negative binomial distributions.

Abstract:We present two everyday applications of a new bivariate beta-binomial distribution. Although the applications are familiar, they share unique characteristics that cannot be handled adequately by existing bivariate discrete distributions. These features are high levels of between- and within-trial correlation for the bivariate random variables. Our model is derived from a broad class of bivariate models based on a versatile, but little-known, family of distributions due to Sarmanov. For the applications presented, we show that our model fits observed data very well. In addition, for the bacon and eggs application, the model can be used to help improve the management of inventory in grocery stores.
