Abstract:Using solar energy to catalytically convert nitrate into ammonia is attractive for waste recycling and sustainable development. However, the rapid recombination of electron-hole pairs and the poor selectivity are obstructing photocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia to be mass applied currently. In this work, we reported a facile synthesis of carbon/bismuth/bismuth oxide photocatalyst via a one-pot hydrothermal reaction without using reducing reagent. Compared with α-bismuth oxide (α-Bi2O3), the photocatalytic ammonia yield of the optimum sample increased 3.65 times. In addition, the ammonia selectivity increased from 65.21% to 95.00%. The highly enhanced photocatalytic performance was attributed to the surface plasmon resonance of metallic bismuth. Meanwhile, the formation of carbon enables to boost the transfer of electrons significantly. Under light irradiation, electrons can be accumulated on metallic bismuth, effectively boosting the reduction of nitrate. The findings of this work will contribute to the recycling of nitrate for ammonia synthesis and sustainable environmental development.

Abstract:The photocatalytic nitrogen reduction offers a promising strategy for ammonia (NH3) production, with the kinetics of the reaction depending on the transfer of photoinduced electrons to the adsorbed N-2 molecules. However, the energetic electrons may flow into the defect states of the photocatalyst, thereby impeding nitrogen fixation. Herein, were report a novel heterojunction photocatalyst system for photocatalytic NH3 production, comprising BiO quantum dots (QDs) and nitrogen defective ultrathin carbon nitride (UCNx), which overcomes this limitation. Efficient spatial charge separation is achieved through nitrogen vacancies and the intimate heterojunction contact between the BiO QDs and UCNx. Benefitting from efficient charge separation, the adsorbed N(2 )on nitrogen vacancies and Bi( )(2+)sites can effectively receive energetic electrons and in turn boost NH3 production. The optimal hybrid catalyst (BiCNx-5) shows excellent photocatalytic performance, with NH3 production rate of 576.11 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) under visible light illumination (lambda > 420 nm). This study provides a platform for the future design of effective photocatalysts for NH3 production.

Abstract:Using semiconductor photocatalysts instead of the traditional Haber–Bosch procedure to produce ammonia is a promising strategy to save energy and prevent environmental pollution. Therefore, finding a suitable photocatalyst with high efficiency and stability has become one of the big challenges of research communities in the field of heterogeneous photocatalysis. Herein, S-scheme TiO2 quantum dots (QDs)/Fe3S4 heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized through a hydrothermal route. The nitrogen photofixation measurements exhibited that the TiO2 QDs/Fe3S4 photocatalysts have excellent activities, where the generation of NH3 by the optimized nanocomposite reached 16,624 μmol L–1 g–1 upon simulated sunlight. This amount was almost 19.9, 6.30, and 2.85 times as high as those of TiO2, TiO2 QDs, and Fe3S4 photocatalysts, respectively. The promoted photocatalytic ability was devoted to outstanding visible-light absorption, accelerated segregation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs, and enhanced surface area. The key purpose of this research was the rational design of a photocatalyst based on TiO2 QDs through a one-pot and facile fabrication procedure, which exhibits admirable performance in the field of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. Considering the advantages of binary TiO2 QDs/Fe3S4 photocatalysts, it is anticipated that this photocatalyst could be utilized in solar energy conversion processes.

Abstract:As an essential feedstock for fertilizer and chemical industries, ammonia is being produced by a so-called Haber-Bosch process. However, global warming and the energy crisis urge us to find a sustainable and clean alternative for ammonia production. Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation is an alternative but challenging method. Low reactivity of nitrogen molecules, slow production rate, poor light-absorption capacity, and need of using organic sacrificial chemicals are the most pronounced challenges of the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation process. Among previously studied photocatalysts, bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) is an excellent candidate due to its full visible-light absorption and nitrogen binding affinity. However, BiOI is suffering from its positive conduction band minimum potential, which is lower than the proton-assisted nitrogen reduction potential (-0.23 eV vs. RHE). In this talk, I will show that the surface electric dipole induced by PVP molecules on BiOI nanosheets upshifted the band edge potentials, thus enabling redox reactions simultaneously.

Abstract:Artificial ammonia synthesis using solar energy is of great significance as it can help narrow the gap to the zero-net emission target. However, the current photocatalytic activity is generally too low for mass production. Herein, we report a novel bismuth bromide oxide（BiOBr）-Tetracyanoquinodimethane（TCNQ）photocatalyst prepared via a facile self-assembly method. Due to the well-match band structure of TCNQ and Bi OBr, the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs were significantly boosted.More importantly, the abundant delocalized π electrons of TCNQ, and the electron-withdrawing property of TNCQ made electrons efficiently accumulated on the catalysts, which can strengthen the adsorption and cleavage of nitrogen molecules. As a result, the photocatalytic activity increased significantly. The highest ammonia yield of the optimized sample reached 2.617 mg/（h gcat）, which was 5.6-fold as that of pristine BiOBr and higher than the reported BiOBr-based photocatalysts. The isotope labeled15N 2 was used to confirm that the ammonia is formed form the fixation of N 2 . Meanwhile, the sample also had good stability. After 4-time usage, the photocatalysts still had about 81.8% as the fresh sample. The results of this work provide a new way for optimizing the electronic structure of photocatalysts to achieve highly efficient photochemical N 2 reduction.

Abstract:An appealing strategy for air pollution treatment is the conversion of NOx in flue gas to valuable chemicals in ambient conditions. The electrocatalytic reduction of nitric oxide has been demonstrated to be a very effective process, however, the photocatalytic reduction of nitric oxide hasn't received much research attention. Herein, we developed a novel 0D/3D g-C3N4 QDs/3DOMM-TiO2-x catalyst, and investigated its performances in both electro- and photocatalytic reduction of nitric oxide to ammonia through experimental analysis and theoretical computation. In the electrocatalytic reduction of NO, the NH3 yield of g-C3N4 QDs/3DOMM-TiO2-x is up to 3841.5 μg h−1 mg−1, which is 15.15, 3.14, and 1.15 times that of TiO2 (P25), 3DOMM-TiO2 and g-C3N4 QDs/3DOMM-TiO2, respectively. The best reaction pathway is *NO → *HNO → *HNOH → *NH→ *NH2 → *NH3 → *NH4 +, and the potential determining step is *NH → *NH2. Furthermore, the NH3 yield is estimated to be 95.07 μg h−1 mg−1 in the photocatalytic reduction of NO, using g-C3N4 QDs/3DOMM-TiO2-x as single photoelectrode. The NO molecules are reduced to NH3 on the CB of the g-C3N4 QDs by the accumulated photoelectrons, and charge migration occurs according to the S-scheme in the g-C3N4 QDs/3DOMM-TiO2-x photocatalyst. The results pave a new route for producing ammonia from NO under ambient conditions using electricity and solar energy.

Abstract:Photocatalytic fixation of nitrogen to ammonia represents an attractive alternative to the Haber-Bosch process under ambient conditions, and the performance can be enhanced by defect engineering of the photocatalysts, in particular, formation of shallow energy levels due to oxygen vacancies that can significantly facilitate the adsorption and activation of nitrogen. This calls for deliberate size engineering of the photocatalysts. In the present study, pyrochlore Bi2Ti2O7 quantum dots and (bulk-like) nanosheets are prepared hydrothermally by using bismuth nitrate and titanium sulfate as the precursors. Despite a similar oxygen vacancy concentration, the quantum dots exhibit a drastically enhanced photocatalytic performance toward nitrogen fixation, at a rate of 332.03 µmol g-1 h-1, which is 77 times higher than that of the nanosheet counterpart. Spectroscopic and computational studies based on density functional theory calculations show that the shallow levels arising from oxygen vacancies in the Bi2Ti2O7 quantum dots, in conjunction with the moderately constrained quantum confinement effect, facilitate the chemical adsorption and activation of nitrogen.
Unique Two-Electron Transfer Pathway of Bismuth Nanocrystal for Enhanced N2 Electroreduction Revealed by in Situ Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract:Due to the alarming increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, there is an urgent need to replace the fossil fuel-driven Haber-Bosch process with green ammonia production. Electrochemical nitrogen fixation has shown preliminary promise for industrially ammonia synthesis, but an in-depth mechanistic understanding of the nitrogen reduction process remains limited. Herein, a unique dinitrogen desorption mechanism for the nitrogen reduction reaction is detected on the bismuth nanocrystals, which may explain some intriguing phenomena reported in previous works, including (1) why hydrazine is still generated in some nitrogen reduction reactions that do not follow the alternating pathway, and (2) a minor change in bismuth particle size can lead to a dramatic change in NRR performance. In addition, the experimental and theoretical calculation results reveal that the dinitrogen desorption pathway involving the transfer of two electrons usually shows lower energy barriers and faster reaction kinetics, resulting in a dramatic enhancement in NRR performance.
Solar Water Splitting and Nitrogen Fixation with Layered Bismuth Oxyhalides

Abstract:Hydrogen and ammonia are the chemical molecules that are vital to Earth's energy, environmental, and biological processes. Hydrogen with renewable, carbon-free, and high combustion-enthalpy hallmarks lays the foundation of next-generation energy source, while ammonia furnishes the building blocks of fertilizers and proteins to sustain the lives of plants and organisms. Such merits fascinate worldwide scientists in developing viable strategies to produce hydrogen and ammonia. Currently, at the forefronts of hydrogen and ammonia syntheses are solar water splitting and nitrogen fixation, because they go beyond the high temperature and pressure requirements of methane stream reforming and Haber-Bosch reaction, respectively, as the commercialized hydrogen and ammonia production routes, and inherit the natural photosynthesis virtues that are green and sustainable and operate at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The key to propelling such photochemical reactions lies in searching photocatalysts that enable water splitting into hydrogen and nitrogen fixation to make ammonia efficiently. Although the past 40 years have witnessed significant breakthroughs using the most widely studied TiO2, SrTiO3, (Ga1-xZnx)(N1-xOx), CdS, and g-C3N4 for solar chemical synthesis, two crucial yet still unsolved issues challenge their further progress toward robust solar water splitting and nitrogen fixation, including the inefficient steering of electron transportation from the bulk to the surface and the difficulty of activating the N≡N triple bond of N2. This Account details our endeavors that leverage layered bismuth oxyhalides as photocatalysts for efficient solar water splitting and nitrogen fixation, with a focus on addressing the above two problems. We first demonstrate that the layered structures of bismuth oxyhalides can stimulate an internal electric field (IEF) that is capable of efficiently separating electrons and holes after their formation and of precisely channeling their migration from the bulk to the surface along the different directions, thus enabling more electrons to reach the surface for water splitting and nitrogen fixation. Simultaneously, their oxygen termination feature and the strain differences between interlayers and intralayers render the easy generation of surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) that afford Lewis-base and unsaturated-unsaturated sites for nitrogen activation. With these rationales as the guideline, we can obtain striking visible-light hydrogen- and ammonia-evolving rates without using any noble-metal cocatalysts. Then we show how to utilize IEF and OV based strategies to improve the solar water splitting and nitrogen fixation performances of bismuth oxyhalide photocatalysts. Finally, we highlight the challenges remaining in using bismuth oxyhalides for solar hydrogen and ammonia syntheses, and the prospect of further development of this research field. We believe that our mechanistic insights could serve as a blueprint for the design of more efficient solar water splitting and nitrogen fixation systems, and layered bismuth oxyhalides might open up new photocatalyst paradigm for such two solar chemical syntheses.
Light‐Switchable Oxygen Vacancies in Ultrafine Bi5O7Br Nanotubes for Boosting Solar‐Driven Nitrogen Fixation in Pure Water

Abstract:Solar‐driven reduction of dinitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NH3) is severely hampered by the kinetically complex and energetically challenging multielectron reaction. Oxygen vacancies (OVs) with abundant localized electrons on the surface of bismuth oxybromide‐based semiconductors are demonstrated to have the ability to capture and activate N2, providing an alternative pathway to overcome such limitations. However, bismuth oxybromide materials are susceptible to photocorrosion, and the surface OVs are easily oxidized and therefore lose their activities. For realistic photocatalytic N2 fixation, fabricating and enhancing the stability of sustainable OVs on semiconductors is indispensable. This study shows the first synthesis of self‐assembled 5 nm diameter Bi5O7Br nanotubes with strong nanotube structure, suitable absorption edge, and many exposed surface sites, which are favorable for furnishing sufficient visible light‐induced OVs to realize excellent and stable photoreduction of atmospheric N2 into NH3 in pure water. The NH3 generation rate is as high as 1.38 mmol h−1 g−1, accompanied by an apparent quantum efficiency over 2.3% at 420 nm. The results presented herein provide new insights into rational design and engineering for the creation of highly active catalysts with light‐switchable OVs toward efficient, stable, and sustainable visible light N2 fixation in mild conditions.

Abstract:Ammonia synthesis under mild conditions is of supreme interest. Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation with water at room temperature and atmospheric pressure is an intriguing strategy. However, the efficiency of this method has been far from satisfied for industrialization, mainly due to the sluggish cleavage of the N/N bond. Herein, we report a carbon-tungstic-acid (WO3 center dot H2O) hybrid for the co-optimization of N-2 activation as well as subsequent photoinduced protonation. Efficient ammonia evolution reached 205 mu mol g(-1)h(-1) over this hybrid under simulated sunlight. Nitrogen temperature-programmed desorption revealed the decisive role of carbon in N-2 adsorption. Photoactive WO3 . H2O guaranteed the supply of electrons and protons for subsequent protonation. The universality of carbon modification for enhancing the N-2 reduction was further verified over various photocatalysts, shedding light on future materials design for ideal solar energy utilization.
Enhanced Photocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction via Bismuth Nanoparticle-Decorating ZnCdS Solid Solution

Abstract:The construction of photocatalysts with a surface plasmon resonance effect (SPR) has been demonstrated as a highly effective strategy for enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. In this paper, we synthesized a catalyst with bismuth metal loaded on ZnCdS nanospheres for an efficient photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (PNRR). The SPR effect induced by Bi nanoparticles under light excitation significantly promoted the ammonia production efficiency of the photocatalyst. Under air ambient conditions with lactic acid as the sacrificial agent, the photocatalytic NH4+ yield of 3% Bi@ZnCdS was 58.93 μmol·g-1·h-1, which exhibited an approximately 7.7 times that of the pure phase ZnCdS. The experimental characterization results demonstrate that the incorporation of metallic bismuth enhances the light absorption capacity of the catalyst and improves the separation efficiency of the photogenerated carriers. Theoretical calculations proved that Bi NPs provide more photogenerated electrons to convert N2 to NH3 for solid-solution ZnCdS. This work presents a novel concept for the development of advanced plasma nanomaterials to enhance the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation reaction.

Abstract:Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation represents an effective technology for the artificial production of ammonia from atmospheric nitrogen, a critical step toward a sustainable economy. Bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX, X = Cl, Br, and I) have emerged as viable catalysts for photocatalytic reduction of nitrogen into ammonia, due to their unique electronic structures and optical properties. Herein, the recent progress of BiOX‐based photocatalysts for nitrogen fixation, with a focus on the reaction mechanism and pathways, materials preparation, and strategies of structural engineering for enhanced performance, is summarized. The article is concluded with a perspective where the promises and challenges of bismuth‐based photocatalysts for nitrogen reduction to ammonia are highlighted, along with possible future research directions.

Crucial to enabling this vision is the development of highly active and selective catalysts for the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (ENRR). Herein, we report a facile synthesis of hollow and solid bismuth (Bi) nanospheres catalysts using a one-pot solvothermal method. As a consequence of its hierarchical macroporous-mesoporous architecture, Bi hollow nanospheres catalyst exhibited significantly improved catalytic performance towards the ENRR compared with its solid counterpart. Remarkably, the Bi nanocatalyst enabled ammonia electrosynthesis with a yield of 23.4 1.3 lig 11-1 mg-lcat. and a corresponding FE as high as 19.8 1.1% at ambient conditions, which outperformed most ENRR catalysts reported up to date. Bi/BSO Heterojunctions via Vacancy Engineering for Efficient Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation

Abstract:Schottky junctions formed by metallic Bi nanowires and semiconducting Bi2Sn2O7 nanoparticles facilitate unidirectional electron flow from the latter to the former and markedly enhance the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance under simulated sunlight where metallic Bi acts as the active sites. Photocatalytic nitrogen reduction represents a viable technology for green ammonia synthesis under mild conditions. However, the performance of the photocatalysts is typically limited by high charge carrier recombination and low adsorption and activation of nitrogen molecules. Herein, Bi/Bi2Sn2O7 (Bi/BSO) heterojunction nanocomposites are prepared via a one‐step hydrothermal method, where NaOH etching of oxygen vacancies in the Bi─O bonds of Bi2Sn2O7 (BSO) is exploited for the in situ formation of metallic Bi and hence Schottky junctions with the semiconducting BSO. This leads to a high separation rate of photogenerated charge carriers. Consequently, compared to the pure‐phase BSO, the Bi/BSO heterostructures exhibit markedly enhanced ammonia production, reaching an optimum rate of 284.5 μmol g−1 h−1, where the rectifying contact between the semiconducting BSO and metallic Bi facilitates directional BSO to Bi electron transfer, leading to enrichment of photogenerated electrons at the active sites of metallic Bi. First‐principles calculations confirm the alteration of active sites and the guided electron flow by the Schottky junctions and surface oxygen vacancies. Results from this study offer an effective paradigm of structural engineering in manipulating the photocatalytic activity of bismuth‐based pyrochlore materials toward nitrogen fixation to ammonia.

Abstract:N2 fixation is one of the most important chemical reactions in the ecosystem of our planet. However, the industrial Haber-Bosch ammonia synthesis process is restricted by harsh reaction conditions (350-550 °C, 150-350 atm) and undesirable environmental effects (a large amount of CO2 emission). Photocatalytic N2 fixation is promising for achieving sustainable ammonia synthesis under ambient conditions with lower energy input and less environmental issues. However, the known photocatalysts for N2 reduction under mild conditions still face the great challenge of very low energy conversion efficiency. Herein, we report a facile solution-phase method to prepare the heterojunctions based on n-type Bi2MoO6 nanorods and oxygen-vacancy-rich p-type BiOBr nanosheets (Bi2MoO6/OV-BiOBr). Originating from the formation of p-n junctions and suitable bandgap configuration, the Bi2MoO6/OV-BiOBr heterojunctions exhibit effective light utilization and photogenerated electron-hole separation properties. Moreover, it is confirmed that the oxygen vacancies on BiOBr nanosheets are propitious to the adsorption and activation of N2 molecules. Benefiting from these merits, the Bi2MoO6/OV-BiOBr heterojunctions exhibit improved photocatalytic performance for N2 conversion to ammonia without any noble metal co-catalysts and sacrificial reagents under ambient conditions.
Sm(II)-catalyzed reduction of dinitrogen, nitrite and nitrate to ammonia or urea

Abstract:Industrial dinitrogen reduction to ammonia in the Haber-Bosch synthesis is essential for the production of fertilizers, and consequently, of food. This process accounts for up to 2% of global energy use. Methods wherein the energy for nitrogen activation is supplied by light could provide more sustainable alternatives to existing ones. The first transition-metal free molecular photocatalyst for the reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia is reported. The catalyst is based on Earth-abundant Sm. The reaction proceeds at ambient pressure and temperature with high turnover numbers (up to 70) with visible light irradiation in aqueous solvent mixtures and even pure water, and uses an environmentally benign non-metallic sacrificial reductant. Nitrite and nitrate were also efficiently reduced to ammonia. The first photocatalytic co-reduction of nitrite and bicarbonate to urea using a Sm-based photocatalyst was achieved.
